Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

Another reason to vote for Last Stop is that it feels narratively satisfying to deal with a lot of our personal stuff before we try to break through.

We sit down with Meizhen and have a talk about our relationship; we spend time with CRX and get to know her personally before we have to make a decision; we deal with Fu Xiangs favour so it's not weighing in the back of our minds (since Ling Qi IC is concerned about what to do there); the council meeting should reassure us about Sun Liling's faction so we know we don't need to worry about them (hopefully) until the tournament; and we spend time with Zhengui after his breakthrough to get to know the new him and reassure him before our breakthrough. Zeqing admittedly I'm not sure what will happen, but it seems important and I want to see her before we breakthrough anyway.

Couple of interesting highlights now that the whole voting is more or less debated to death:
"I had intended to collapse the structure," Meizhen replied simply. She stood on a thin branch, which somehow flawlessly held her weight without bending. "Then trace the trail of his escape method, should he have one."

Ling Qi grimaced. "Wouldn't that have good odds of, well… killing him?" She pointed out.

"A terrible tragedy indeed," her friend replied without looking away from the lake. "I of course had intelligence indicating that he was elsewhere at the time, and that a cultivator of the earth element would be hardier."

Ling Qi looked down and sighed. She didn't doubt that her friend could get away with an excuse like that. The Bai were on the outs with the imperial court, but in the end the Sect wouldn't risk giving insult to a founding house over someone like Yan Renshu. The more she learned about imperial politics, the less she liked them.
Meizhen didn't intend to torture him or anything. She was just plain going to kill him and then claim accidental death.
It'd also fool nobody, but at the same time nobody gives a shit about a commoner enough to burn any markers making it official.

That said, there ARE many ways for the Sect to make its displeasure felt without escalating to an official inquiry and so that would not be very fun for Meizhen(not that she intends to give a shit).

"...What is a Seigebreaker Rod?" Ling Qi asked, morbidly curious. Within her dantian, Zhen seemed to be curious perking up at her thoughts of explosions.
Zhen likes explosions.
Wonder if we can get some Formation cannons mounted on them.

"It is a somewhat antiquated tool of warfare," her friend said quietly. "But suitable for our purposes. It breaks low ranking arrays within a certain radius in a manner which leads to their invested qi exploding," she glanced at Ling Qi. "There are safeguards against such things, but they are beyond what I have observed of Yan Renshu's formation work."

So thats probably the counter to the sun spheres or similar stuff, but Cai found a cheaper way to do it.

Not sure if the Doombot was immune to the rod or if it was just out of range. It's confirmed later though.

She grimaced as they dropped down to the ground. "How much are you spending on this?"

"...It does not matter, a few baubles are no concern to me," Meizhen replied evasively.
As later WoG confirms, these are expensive enough that you're looking at least at a Count before you can get pocket sized siege gear.

Meizhen is probably stretching her allowance a little, but on the other hand she doesn't seem to have spent much of it on anything else at all, seeing as with Cai joining her in Sun bashing she's not spending a lot of the special favors options.

From within the mirror room, hidden alcoves opened, a half dozen black iron puppets emerging, with a variety of weapons forged onto their limbs. Formations flared to life on the walls, and characters burned on the surface of the puppets, blazing with empowering qi

So turns out he had more black iron golems, or he rebuilt them.

Water an acidic mist clashed, and she saw worms erupt from the ground, much bigger than the sentries they had slain before. Cui lashed out coiling around biting one, and the other shrieked as Meizhen's whipping blades tore it apart.
And he also had more elite worms.

In that instant before she loosed though, she understood what had been wrong. The mist cloaked figure above her was too tall and too thin. Whip thin, with a handsome face and green eyes, this was not the hunched and ugly figure that had confronted her in Yan Renshu's previous lair.
And turns out it's indeed a Doombot as some of us suspected.

I'm guessing Renshu STARTED out looking like his doombot, but Ling Qi repeatedly mentioned 'sickly' qi, which you might recall was also how she described being hit by the Cloud Shaman curse.

Extrapolating from that, the mirror chamber is for him to maintain and build spare doombots?
"Just another toy then," Meizhen said in disgust, her empty hand outstretched. "To think even my eyes were fooled. I suppose I must commend you for such sturdy formation work as well."
So the doombot could resist dispels.
"Save your disdain. I had hoped to hold you longer here, but this will have to do..."
And I think this means the conclusion is that the 'best' route would have been Storage > Puppets. Real Renshu was at the puppet factory.

In that instant, their eyes met as Meizhen vanished with a splash. Ling Qi glanced back to see a bubble of grey expanding violently outward from the puppet; rubble, broken parts, water and dust alike froze in its wake, utterly still and Ling Qi felt a thrill of dread. Without further hesitation, she snapped the woven bracelet on her wrist, focusing furiously on the gates of the outer sect.
A doombot with a built in nuke.
If Meizhen caved the place in like she wanted to then she'd have detected the doombot 'dying' and then the base exploding, eradicating all evidence.

After apologizing to the panicking farmer who rushed out at the disturbance, and forcing him to accept a few stones for the damages, Ling Qi rushed right back out, despite the fact that she was dripping wet and covered in mud.
Meanwhile Random-Farmer just got more money than he'd ever had.

@jacobk and I already agreed to do this. That said if you're interested we're either 1 or 2 points away from upgrading ossuary scout (not sure how the points distribution went with mine and jacobk's agreement).

I think upgrading it could be useful if we're going to be Cai's intrigue girl and generally in stealth actions. Plus it's cool. But they're your points.

As in the points have already been spent and we're just waiting on yrs to update the page? In that case, sure, I mean I did spend like 10ish points (beware self-serving memory inflation) on formations so s'all good to me.

Isnt scrying more likely?

I'm pretty sure mirrors are for Divination/Clairvoyance/Remote viewing. Mirrors are a traditional supplement for that kind of thing, alongside crystal balls and pools of water. This probably helps explain why his scrying range is so wide and how he's able to keep it up; lots of mirrors probably help his range and qi investment.

Xuan Wu probably has the palm for that. He seem to be a relativelly lovable nerd with a sob backstory. Every time we spoke to him was entertaining, and he will continue being a thing for a lot longer than YR.
Does Xuan have a sob backstory? Renshu has his intriguing past experience with the lack of noble mercy. What does Xuan have to compete with that? :p

Well, I sort of feel like her plan could have maybe been more foolproof. Dropping the roof of a cavern on an earth cultivator, which he excavated himself alongside many other subterranean hideouts with an art that can probably move large quantities of...well...earth, seems like it has one particularly glaring weakness. Alongside of course that cheap escape talismans are 300 RS a piece and he could just port away without her ever noticing.

His application for the Meizhens Husbando position was rejected by the Bai Clan.

We are trying to get her to mellow our. Not give her tips and cheer for this behaviour.

Edit: Hello Aramis! Almost there! Godspeed and good luck. Have fun!

I realise it's probably far too late for any changes to be made now, but I'd feel a lot better about Plan Breakthrough Start if the puzzle box action were swapped for the getting to know Cai action, as it seems far more important to me that we try to solidify a friendship with Cai before we hit Green and have the retainer relationship as an additional barrier to work through (assuming we join up with her, which at this point seems relatively likely). This has to be done before we break through - i.e. this week. In comparison, the puzzle box is far less urgent - any cool goodies seem much less likely to have their utility negatively affected by having their acquisition delayed for a week.

We might be doing her a disservice by doing that, she might dearly need that attitude when she's competing with her ruthless siblings for heirdom of the clan. Or when facing off against the western sunflower demons that already took their bite out of the Bai.

Also, I don't so much mind her being uncompromising and merciless (again, she got that attitude drilled in for a reason, not saying that's it's a valid way to go about your life for everyone, but when you grow up in a viper's pit you can't exactly play mouse and roll over), but rather her being callous about it. If she identified Renshu as a target and wanted him gone I'd expect a more...thorough approach somehow.

Her perception art can track that at least.
Teleport formation he designed himself that teleports twice; one short-distance to get out of perception range and lay a false trail, then a second long-range that gets him to his true destination.

I mean, the guy can do timestop bombs. A double-teleport would be easy in comparison. Maybe his yearly project is the teleporting timestop bomb?

Well, it's not possible to attach Cai action. It might be possible to attach Meizhen, and thus have the Cai action detached, but we want the Meizhen action to be 'full', rather than shared with another minor.

Narrative wise, though, last action we took with cai, a week ago, was about her showing to us she was a good boss, and literally saving our mother. The 'arc' of CRX proving her mettle as a boss is just closed, and 'opening' the arc of CRX being a friend on breakthrough is, well, not narratively compelling to me. It won't be closed after all.

We just spent all of last week closing up all loose ends (Meizhen, Xiulan, Su Ling, Zhengui) as well as prepare for breakthrough (Peak physical, last art, dragon site, Puzzle box). There is really not much we can do before breakthrough that is narratively compelling when it comes to loose ends beside see Suyin (doing it in PS plan) and maybe Puzzle box (Moon narrative loose hand, plausible way to get breakthrough drugs for bronze next week). Maybe Dragon, but it's not really a loose end.

We could be opening new plots (look for Yan Renshu, do Favors, see CRX personally) but it's not the best of idea. Hell, this is partly why I am not a fan of Zeqing minor, as it screams "new plot point before breakthrough".
Her perception art can track that at least.
Which makes me wonder what she would have done had she detected YR teleporting away (not that he would have).

To be fair, cruelty isn't something you should have as your sole tool. That seems to be the mistake the Bai have made.

Because if cruelty is always your go-to response, then you become predictable. You have to balance ruthlessness with magnanimity to truly be a Great Person in a world like this

the Favors isn't a new plot point though? It's closing off the debt we owe Fu Xiang.
I am pretty sure that we are planning to do the ULTRA++ favor for Fu Xiang, and get some very nice thanks from him. While I don't think, narratively, that the location of a Trial is likely, we will get something that will bring us a new quest.

My hope is that he will help us track down YR. Buddy-cop show with Fu Xiang against YR, woohoo.

One of the things with Renshu is he's doing layered intrigue.
When we first encountered his remote patsies, he revealed the ability to fake being a weak cultivator with a puppet, but it was a crappy wooden puppet, and he could use what looked like very limited arts through it. Nothing a firstie can't manage.

Then it turns out he has entire underground production facilities and the first time we see his worms. Most of the worms turn out to be everywhere, but underground. Here we learn that Yan Renshu looks 'withered' in some way, but since Ling Qi doesn't know shit she doesn't know what everyone else thinks he looks like.
Our second base raid was the closest to reality that we've seen, and what we learned was illuminating. Even in his own base he runs a double layered bluff, he puts some superficial wealth in a drawer, behind some nasty for a first year formations, and then if you look underneath the underneath, you find the REAL treasure, sealed tight behind traps where even his spirits don't know where they are.

Then we learned more during the chase, where he broke out the metal puppets for the first time. These were a serious threat to lesser cultivators, but he used what, three? Everyone assumed they were too expensive to operate and he broke out his emergency stash.

We learned he knows enough of Formations to create magically binding geas on a limited manner and that for some reason he had invested huge amounts of Qi into them...yet as per Ling Qi's escape he certainly had no lack of Qi to use even then.

THEN we learned he could scry long distance and often enough to cockblock missions. Annoying, but Ling Qi is good at elusive, so it stayed that way.

THEN here finally, we found and looted his stores. What we found was that his worms were weaker, and there was a conspicuous lack of puppets or defenses(even anything comparable to his secondary base's was missing). Anyone who tracked his worms home would have thought "Renshu is at his wits end if this is so poorly defended".

Then we have this last scene. We discovered he had at least SIX more black iron puppets. Six low/mid Yellow emulators. They were not new, since they were hooked up to buffing formations.
Then he broke out the super worms we thought were already wiped out.

We discovered he can make a puppet good enough to:
-Resist a siegebreaker rod, which according to Meizhen would have smashed anything else he had ever done. So he knows how to protect his formations from dispelling, but deliberately does not so as to cultivate a false weakness.
-Completely fool the perception art of a 3rd rank cultivator from an old noble family.
-Use his arts at what is likely close to full power remotely.
-Fight Bai Meizhen, currently the strongest or second strongest cultivator on the Outer Sect for an extended period without taking significant enough damage for her to question the lack of bleeding.
-Include a selfdestruct strong enough to annihilate the whole base, forcing Meizhen to use her perfect dodge and Ling Qi to bust her escape talisman...and destroying all evidence of his base so you can't analyze his formations to figure out how.

And all that was an extended feint for him to finish running away with his puppet factory. The whole thing.
I'd say the Renshu puppet alone would have allowed him to graduate Outer Sect. But he didn't want to.

Also it sounds like some exotic elemental effect. Stasis in that nature is most likely Void, or pure Yin element.

The strangest part is: Why is his qi sickly and his true body withered? How long had he been conducting all meetings via doombot?

Maybe he went through his own version of a Heavenly Tribulation?

You know, I thought the theory that Renshu was actually an older year planted by the sect to play an antagonist was ridiculous, but seeing it written out like that I start to wonder...

-Fight Bai Meizhen, currently the strongest or second strongest cultivator on the Outer Sect for an extended period without taking significant enough damage for her to question the lack of bleeding.
I agree with most points, but didn't Meizhen only fought him for, what? half a turn, which was just her using her rod?

I was in favor of doing the favor ;) last time it came up and I want to do it next week. "I was busy finishing my breakthrough" may be a decent alibi, and we should clear it up. Also, the later cultivation actions are more valuable, so putting it off till later means giving up a more valuable later action instead of a less valuable current action. I would also like to do the other Cai minor.
As SynchronizedWritersBlock and others have noted before, the favor is (a) not particularly time sensitive, and (b) a valuable source of stealth/larceny successes that are best used after breakthrough to boost the difficult-to-boost EPC.

So after Cai formally announces victory and doing the Favor will mean blatantly breaking her rules and abusing our position under her like Ji Rong supposedly did?

Because the punishment for failure or being found out will go up massively after this. This wouldn't just be breaking the rules it would be spitting in her face and the fact that she offered us Vassalage will just make it sting more.

Props to @CircleTheSkies for reminding me of that.
A difference of 10% could be the gap between 4th place in the tournament and 9th. Look at RL races - how small is the gap between 1st and last in the 400m run?
It's one week.

I'd rather he not just be an Elder plot, at this point. He's actually pretty awesome and he seems more set to be Jiao's apprentice than we do. Especially with his lack of trust for nobility, the MoI seems the perfect stepping stone for him. Gets him backing, power, the ability to target nobles and they seem to be the tricksy type too.
