Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

I mean more in the sense of "This is not a good time to be focusing on something that'll only pay off a few weeks down the line", when we have two more weeks left of relative safety before we need to be ready to fight for our life.

Remember, we get +5 free progression points on AS 5 every week no matter what we do. Let's not waste an action on it when we still have more shoring up of our foundation to go.
Yeah, but it means each weke we don't train it means -5 too :p.
If we're going to do something that isn't pushing us up closer to Yellow/Silver, then it should be training an Art.
You are making a good point, however. I might be willing to switch to training both arts instead, as it will help with spiritual cultivation.

Trying to get Yellow in week 12 means crippling our Qi reserves, our meridians and our Art improvements over the idea that Yellow itself is more important than excellent progress everywhere.
Your assumption is that because we'd be 'losing out' on the Qi Foundation pill we'd lose out on the opportunity to use it for Arts and meridians.

We know that Elder Su has been providing the Yellow students with medicine too, and given the normal way of things in that more powerful cultivators can use more poweful medicine, it is entirely likely that we will get better medicine and thus better bonuses to learning Arts and opening meridians. We'll lose one pill, we'll get a better one. Just like we'll stop being able to use our Red pills effectively but we will be provided with Yellow ones instead. Pills like those Huang Da is now able to use.

Our only non-medicine related concern was whether Argent Soul would help in Yellow, and sure enough Argent Soul 4 provides all bonuses up to Mid-Yellow, meaning we can use it in Early Yellow just fine now.

Seriously, the idea that we should stall our advancement to use our medicine 'most efficiently' is ignoring the fact that once we truly advance they will give us better medicine.

Yeah, like I said, a lot of the resources that work in Red don't work in Yellow any more, so when he broke through without perfecting his foundation, he ensured that those lower level resources are now useless to him, and his clan can't feed him stuff suited for Yellow until the truce ends--and even then, he has to send word to them and actually receive them.

He basically crippled his growth curve for immediate gains because we scared him, let's not make the same mistake. A single rank advantage is not insurmountable, especially if our Arts are good. Keep progressing, yes--but not at the cost of our long term growth, not when our escaping ability is good and our allies are forewarned that this guy is a shit.

Actually, no. We don't know any such things. In fact, Ling Qi believe they got Qi Foundation pills, too, even though they are useless for them.

Losing out on Qi Foundation Pill means each meridian is much harder to open, which might mean losing 3/4 actions, and it means that if we use Sable Light Pill our rolls will be -9 compared to current ones, which is -6*9=54 dices lost.

this is not "a fair trade". This is very short term advancement for mid term crippling when we have no reason to want that short term advancement.
Only with tea. Using Tea and Sable Pill together is like having two extra actions instead of one.
Also using Sable Pill when we only do 2 actions that proc Qi Rolls is like losing 4 full actions of Qi rolls.

Sable pill change has been reverted. Also, we *do* have reason to want short-term advantage. The question is whether we want it enough for the costs it bears. On more sober consideration, I'm thinking the answer is "no".

I'd love to see a quote on that because it's contrary to the Xianxia and frankly makes no damn sense.

@yrsillar Does it seem like Yellow students are being provided with medicine that is equally effective for them as Red students by the Sect in terms of their rewards in addition to whatever stipend of pills they receive? We should be able to ask Meizhen or Han Jian about that pretty trivially.

I'm opposed to getting rid of the staff, the spirit will probably be useful and we don't actually know whether Wood is Yang or Neutral or Yin, plus it could be useful for Li Suyin later.
I note your opposition, and disagree with it. The staff is good, but it isn't going to be that much better than gear that we'll be able to take off of other beaten-up students later. Technically, at some point we might find that wood works for us, but that would be pretty long-term. We're not likely to start looking into such an art for at least a month - we have all of our planned cultivation already mostly sketched out until then. Just sitting on the resource for that long really isn't worth it, especially when life is about to get a lot more dangerous, and especially when the thought is that we *might* find it useful.

Do we actually lose anything for advancing? I'm all for a stable foundation but I thought the only concrete thing we needed was AS4. We just got that. If we can't use leftover medicine so what? We can sell it to someone and start getting some decent gear or give it to one of our friends.

Yeah, but I assume tea actions will be all actions relevant cultivation actions.

We have one Qi Foundation Pill , and we'll probably earn one this past week. We won't earn one next with two social action, but tea week should earn us one, and that's the last week. If we use a Qi Foundation Pill now, next week, and then in four weeks with our last Sable pill, we'll have made serious progress all around.

It's worth noting that we CAN get right up to the verge of yellow right before that final tea week, then try and break though the week after.

Look, building a solid foundation is an important trope in xianxia. We've DONE that with Argent Soul. At some point you need to progress from building the solid foundation to putting a goddamn roof over your head however.

People probably remember it, but a reminder anyway: Qi rolls procced by Sable Light Pill are full qi Rolls that don't get grouped together and halved. They, however, don't benefit from lessons/teaching aids, but do benefit from resource use.

Using week 12 to use Sable Light Pill means getting significantly more Qi and Meridians that we wouldn't be able to get otherwise. Getting to Yellow one week later-if we succed on the very difficult rolls in the 'rush to yellow' plan- is worth it.

My plan does still put us in a fairly good spot to grab silver if we choose to, which will let us compete on reasonably even grounds with the folks who have gone yellow.

If I did this right... we'd get for each proc'd Qi which comes out to rolling 30 dice each time. Saving till we have tea looks really tempting in that respect.

Talent 6, Red Spirit Stone 5, Vent 5, Sable 5, Foundation 9

We've never gotten the chance to focus on physical cultivation when we train with Han Jian and company, which makes perfect sense because they're focusing on meshing their techniques together rather than physical conditioning. ...And you don't have anything planned for physical cultivation beyond that training.

So I'm not really certain it puts us 'in a good spot to grab silver' at all. If you want physical cultivation, I'd suggest putting that down for personal training and then inviting someone from Han Jian's group along.

Well lets start with extra actions. We got the ability to sometimes take five actions occasionally in week 3, when we raised Qi to 8. In week 8 we permanently unlocked another action, again by raising Qi. So we know extra actions are Qi locked. We also know we can't get another extra action before yellow, so whatever level of qi required is going to be beyond what Red can achieve.

We also know that we can at least raise our qi to 25 in Red because of the Argent Soul - it currently supports us to 25, where Argent Soul 5 has the 'you must be yellow to benefit' bonuses.

That means we really do need to raise our qi a bunch to get an extra action. I'm guessing to thirty. Slowing the rate we can improve it isn't appealing to me, since we're already feeling the action economy crunch, and it's only going to get worse when classes end.

This seems simple enough.

Pick 2:

-Social
-Yellow Stage
-Arts

We are at a point where we need to cut loses, so we need to crawl to yellow stage, ignore arts, or shun our friends. We can't split our actions in three diffrent directions. Even 2 is pushing it.

Hm. I'd like to point out that it is unlikely for Huang Da to share the information he has on Ling Qi with anyone given he wants to make her his, which is difficult to do if she is dead, and spreading word on what she can do would only increase the odds of that happening.

If you want to increase the odds of getting silver I'd advise assigning an extra action to physical cultivation instead selling the staff. Because the profit from it doesn't seem worth the action atm, and we've never done any physical cultivation with Han Jian so I'm really unconvinced that trying to do so is liable to work.

There is also the issue that someone who is a tier above Ling Qi in spiritual cultivation receives two automatic successes when resisting FVM.

Now, Huang Da. @yrsillar can probably take it in two directions - one is the "creepist wanna-be rapist", with him ambushing Ling Qi either before or after the truce, and the other is the "creepy suitor", where he strives to show how powerful and suitable he is - and goes after any perceived 'rival'. In the latter case, he's likely to stay at the level he's been at with Li Suyin - creepy greetings, creepy compliments and so on (unless a romantic rival pops up, I suppose).

The former... well, I wouldn't say "I'll drop this quest", but that path goes down some rather uncomfortable trails and is likely to seriously provoke "kill him even if it ends the quest" responses from voters. Even if it doesn't, it's going to turn the quest from "Ling Qi on her journey to cultivate and explore the setting" into "Ling Qi on her mission to defeat Huang Da" - and that's no fun at all.

The latter... that turns Huang Da into a long-term (or at least medium-term) feature of life. He's going to be striving to display his superiority and "suitability", perhaps interfering in social life, definitely interfering if he sees a "rival", probably competing for prizes. However, he's less likely to actually attack Ling Qi (or Li Suyin) in this venue, I think - remember that he stepped forward when he was trying to pick a 'partner' for the pass reward and cultivation at the vent... and almost lost his life. Because he broke through soon after, he doesn't seem to hold a grudge, but I suspect he'll not take any 'direct action' any time soon. He's given up on chasing away any of the trio from the vent, and I wager the rest of the grace period is going to be sheer effort to improve on everyone's part - including him.

In conclusion, I think Ling Qi should keep Huang Da in mind, but shouldn't base her schedule around anticipating having to deal with him in a more permanent fashion. As long as she improves herself and strengthens her ties to her allies, she should be just fine.

I think, for actions, Ling Qi should:
* Talk with Gu Xiulan. This not only gets advice (and perhaps some assistance) in dealing with Huang Da in both short- and long-term, but ties Ling Qi and Gu Xiulan closer together.
* Talk with Han Jian, training. Combat training with the group should increase Ling Qi's capabilities, and it'll keep that social connection fairly strong
* Cultivate at the vent. Trying to bring in yet more people would put a lot of pressure on the links with Li Suyin and (especially) Su Ling; Bai was hard enough. Now, if Ling Qi can broker a trade between the duo and the group - the location of a good cultivation spot in return for assistance with... say, combat training - then that would perhaps be more palatable.

Of the things to cultivate... Argent Soul (obviously, with those auto-successes, plus it counts for "impress Elder Su"). Sable Crescent Step. Spiritual Cultivation itself. Physical Cultivation gets the class as usual.

With the social activities this week, Ling Qi should be safe to go all-in on cultivation next week - Argent Soul, Spiritual, Physical, Forgotten Vale Melody, Zephyr's Breath (or SCS, if it didn't complete this week), a meridian (whichever one needed for rank 3 of either FVM or SCS). 2 red stones, qi foundation pill, sable light pill, gushing spring pill, argent accumulation pill for that last push to impress. Qi Foundation Pill applies to 2 of the rolls directly and 4 qi pool rolls. Sable Light Pill applies to 3 of the rolls directly and thus triggers 3 (+1 for physical cultivation's elixir) qi increase rolls.

[X]Fast and Steady

EDIT: Do not neglect the social actions. Allies mean that Ling Qi is that much safer, and they're also people to learn from and cooperate with on ventures.

Okay. Right now, we're 41 successes away from Peak Gold. Assuming we do the obvious thing and use both vent and two red stones, we're pullign down 27 dice plus rerolls from physical cultivation class on each day. That's 54 dice from that alone (successes on 1-5, reroll 1s) - an average of 27+5 rerolls, or just shy of 30. After that, we're talking 9 successes left - which means that if Han Jian's group does help us push physical cultivation we're set. If they don't, but we get some particularly nice drugs for the physical cultivation, and/or roll particularly well the next time, we're probably doing pretty well. Even if not on both, we can still put actions into physical cultivation then, after we've found out what's on offer from the crafting hall.

Mostly, it's getting the uncertain actions out of the way now, so that we have more info going into the next turn. If we decide we want silver next turn, we can take it then.
