Armisael attacks. Gendo prefers fielding his "reliable" pilots over his "loose cannons", so Rei takes point. But she suffers the same Arael-induced sync problems that Asuka did in canon, and has to withdraw. Kaworu goes next: he can sync despite the Arael problem due to Adam-hax, so he rushes in and Armisael goes for him.

But this is where things go horribly wrong. His soul and body are too close to Adam's, and so instead of causing a canon-style invasion, Armisael's attack threatens to trigger a full-blown Impact right then and there. Gendo has to dip into the high-risk pilot pool, but doesn't want Yui anywhere near that, so Asuka deploys. But without the Lance available, she only has one method available to stop Third Impact from occurring right then and here: self-destruct Unit-02 around the Kaworu/Unit-03/Armisael amalgamate.

Consequences: Shinji snaps, not unlike canon. Hikari loses her mother again. Kaworu's cover is blown and made moot in the space of a few minutes. The fight against the Seventeenth Angel is experiencing technical difficulties. What Rei-III? And how will the WAFF ever recover?

Lots of speculation. Only one certainty: Stryp is going to kill us all.

You DO know that this is a story most deeply rooted in WAFF and not Grimdark, right?

I doubt that as well. This fic has taught me to believe in the Stryp, but also that the Stryp works in mysterious ways. Heck; my guess was originally Rei and Kaworu until the butterflies interfered in mid-writeup and I had to start over.

I have no clue how a dead Asuka could be fixed. All I have is faith that if anyone can pull it off, Strypgia can. If that's even where this fic is going, which I can't be certain about.
 
Extremely busy day, but I will post something tomorrow.

I find all this speculation on Armisael fascinating, too. :V

Kensuke put the cans of soda on the tray with the glasses of ice, and picked it up. He sighed briefly for a moment before he turned for his room. 'Why am I doing this, again? I could be out with any of six different girls right now, all of whom sounded pretty eager to see what Rei has them thinking I can do. Instead I'm... doing something I know isn't going to result in anything but time and money spent on girls I know are... not interested in 'this or that'. I thought I'd decided I kind of wanted an actual love/sex life?'

He sighed again. 'Because Rei would be disappointed in me if I acted like that, and like Hell am I going to do anything that might... blow their cover. I'm not that kind of jerk. So I'll help them out as long as they want.'

He pushed the door to his room open, where he'd left Miki-san and Sakura-san looking at some of his photography folders on his computer. "Hey, I've got the drinks for... what?"

Both girls turned in silence from his computer screen, where a large, well-framed shot of Chihiro Tanaka changing her shirt in the girl's locker room was displayed. Miki-san pointed at the screen. "Aida-san... what is this?"

Uh oh

It would appear that Kensuke's past misdeeds are coming back to bite him at a most inopportune moment.
 
Maybe Kensuke just thinks he's a computer wiz but is actually really bad with anything but the basics? And with our scope of the story being centered very much on Shinji and Asuka (as well as NGE) we never see his lack of aptitude.
 
Kensuke: "How did you get into there?"
Sayaka: "The first password was 'Kyosuke'."
Kyoko: "And the subsequent ones were all hand jokes."
Kensuke: "... I will confess, trying to be meta and clever around you probably wasn't such a hot idea..."


Hmmmmm... Kensuke... Kyosuke... I cannot help but wonder. Ehehehe.
 
Aida you gallant, stupid young man.

Hopefully he rolls high on his charisma saving throw b/c Aida/Kyoko/Sayaka is an adorable ship and I just want my favorite nerd to be happy.
