Is this after the contact experiment or after he gets in the robot? Shinji was kinda well adjusted in childhood, notwithstanding the abandoment issues that Gendo started.
Good question. Watching his mother "die" horribly surely didn't help, but he'd more or less coped by burying the event so deeply in the boxroom of his memory that it didn't come back out until after getting press-ganged into demonstrating why the Falling Into The Cockpit trope that mecha anime is so in love with would really not work in real life.

Well glad I missed all that. Now, a change of topic.

Does anyone else really rather like this story, but somewhat dislike the original Evangelion? Because I get the distinct impression I'm in the minority in that department...

To be fair, most of the fanbase probably acquired first-hand experience of it :V
One of these days, I should call up my old psychiatrist and invite him to an Evangelion marathon, see what he thinks of it.:D

It's a far from perfect show, so depending on how extensive and intense your dislike is, you may find more agreement that you'd think.

I actually find myself liking Evangelion more than I like Warhammer 40k or any of the other grimdark stuff from Games Workshop. I am dumbfounded by this fact. I actually expected to dislike Eva with a passion, but it's actually the opposite of my experience of being introduced to Warhammer 40k. The more I see of Evangelion's story the more I like it. The more I saw of Warhammer 40k's story the more I disliked it. I just........ the world from time to time doesn't meet one's personal expectations. I expected to like Warhammer 40k and I hated it. I expected to dislike Evangelion and I love it.

I imagine that I might find some of the final episodes bad yet, but at this point I'm holding out hope of actually hating Evangelion once I finish it.

Edit: Ooops, sorry. Argument's over, this wasn't needed. I don't want to drag the thread into yelling again, so nvm.

(dammit I need to type faster so I can get responses in early)

Again, nothing like the actual spirit of this point. A psychopath lies because they find it fun, because they see no reason to tell the truth - it's often compulsive. Shinji's conflict de-escalation is on the level of women smiling and nodding at a guy who's creeping them out, or of a kid going "uh huh" when their parents make them promise to stop playing football in the yard. Hardly psychopathic behaviour.
Aleph two things:

One thank you for pointing out the the word there is psychopath not psychotic. That explains why I couldn't find that list on the web after Strypgia posted it.

Two I've stopped arguing a while back, but now it turns out I wasn't even arguing properly. I've been talking about depression induced psychosis. This isn't the same thing as psychopathy and I'm an idiot for arguing before learning from where the argument came from. So I guess the question is since my post you are quoting from doesn't actually do anything anymore, but be a piece of gibberish, should I delete it?

If this is your first time watching the show, then you should know that End of Evangelion is an integral part of the experience.

While that is true, just one word of warning: While I have no problem with movie make believe violence and normally enjoy R-rated action movies, the violence part of EoE made me actually sick. That flamethrower scene still gives me the shivers in a bad way.

My feelings about the original are similar to my feelings about the movie Seven. I'm glad I saw it, it deserves all the hype it gets, but I've no desire to ever see it again.

You know, after the first time I saw EoE I told myself that once was enough. And yet, when the friend that got me into Eva was taking my brother through it I still sat absorbed. It did not, however, break my rule of not seeing EoE alone.

Seriously, that is not a movie to be absorbed solo.

Wouldn't the useage of mind altering substances increase the possibility of EoE being even more brain scarringly inscrutable, or worse cause it to make complete sense?

Wrong. The literal translation is "running away is useless". It's as simple as that.

Meh. Tomato, Tomahto. Shinji knows for a fact that doing it isn't exactly the right thing to do.

Only one way to find out.
