Yeah, as much as their hormones are firing at full blast (They are teenagers), the bigger joy it that Shinji's found someone who really, truly gets him. After a lifetime alone and convinced someone caring about him was an impossible dream, he gets to spend every night cuddled with someone who understands. The fact she's a genius, a fireball of courage and forward momentum, and a gymnast? Just icing on the cake. The bigger part is that he finally doesn't feel alone.

As always, the problem with Shinji isn't talent or skill, but rather motivation. The kid just has a hard time getting the will to try at anything. I think it might be related to his depression.
