In an unrelated note, I discovered music box covers.

"Yep," you say. Dredging a familiar tune from your memory, you begin playing softly, at the barest edge of your hearing as you walk around Mami and reach for the cupboard where you'd seen the deep fryer. "Rice?" you ask.

"Yes, I think so," Mami nods. She doesn't seem to have noticed the music yet, and you slowly increase the music. You retrieve the rice cooker too, as the blonde pulls out a bag of flour for the batter.

You set up the ricecooker, dumping enough rice and water for the two of you into the ricecooker before starting it up while Mami busies herself behind you, preparing the batter for the prawns. As she bustles past you, you catch Mami humming softly, a short, familiar strain, her head swaying to rhythm. "Hmm~hmmmm mmm hm~mmmm..."

You can't help but grin to yourself, making sure that she can't see said grin while you pour oil into the deep fryer.

"Hmm... Sabrina, do you hear something?" Mami asks.

"Hmmm?" you say, carefully schooling your face to impassiveness before you turn to look questioningly at her.

"Some music?" she's frowning, having paused from where she's battering the prawns.

You bump up the volume into full audibility, and laugh when Mami's head jerks upwards to stare at the ceiling. You bring the instruments down to eye level, letting them fan out behind you as you grin at her.

"I said I wanted to show you something when we got back, right?" you grin as you weave in more instruments as the tune strikes its triumphant crescendo. "And... I thought you might like this tune."

Mami stares, jaw working wordlessly. "I... that's amazing, Sabrina," she says. "It's... you- it's perfect. How did you know?"

You shrug, a little self consciously.

"I..." Mami seems at a loss for words, a smile blossoming on her face. Finally, she laughs, shaking her head. "You keep finding new ways to amaze me. What's next?"

"I don't know," you smirk. "But if I did, I wouldn't tell you~" you tease.

"Aw," Mami pouts. "Not even for your dear Mami?" She clasps her hands, trying to looking cute, lower lip wobbling. The effect is rather ruined by her floury fingers and prawn still clutched in one hand, though.

You chuckle. "Sorry!"

"Awww," she says, but a smile belies the disappointed tone. "How did you know that tune, though? Do I... sleep-hum, or something?"

You shrug. "I'm... not sure, really? It just seems... perfect for you."

"It... maybe it's something to do with your powers?" Mami suggests thoughtfully.

"Maybe," you agree. "Uh, Mami." You point at the prawn still in her hand, an enormous drop of batter gathering beneath it.

"Oops!" Mami quickly returns the prawn to the dish, and begins battering the rest of the prawns. "Is the fryer ready?"

"Yep," you answer after a quick glance at the temperature readout. "Pass 'em over."

Mami slides the tray between you, and you quickly begin dropping prawns in with a hiss of boiling oil. "Umm, Sabrina?" Mami asks.

"Mmm?"

"Could you play it again?" she asks.

"Of course," you say, setting your musical instruments in motion again. "Hmm... miso soup?"

Dinner is quickly prepared, Mami humming along to the music with a happy smile on her face, and you soon find yourself sitting down before a gently steaming spread of food, your instruments packed away for now.

Voting in Verse is for when we have a peaceful time alone with Mami!

Hijiri doesn't deserve poetry! :V

A good effort, though.

Right, there's almost no discussion about this vote . That's... not good. I'm going to have to chime in with the best counterpoints I can see here:

As far as the manner of searching goes:
So I've been thinking about this. I don't think that Hijiri can take a shot at us. Let's look at what would happen if she did.
  • Say that she misses. She's in range of our divination, instant game over, and she's spent all her goodwill and will have a far worse outcome from the Pleiades.
  • Say that she hits and OHKOs both of us. Doesn't matter if she kills or just incaps, we're out. Now what?
    • We'd have been in the middle of... honestly, probably the single biggest work of magic that any of the Pleiades will have ever seen. It will be immediately obvious that we've been taken out.
    • Hijiri can't break contact. Odds are that Mami isn't the only one with a tracking device on her. The MOF will dissipate, leaving her in the middle of the sky surrounded by people with super-senses that were already looking at her. She may not even be able to fly without some time to flip through her powers.
    • She's betrayed Sabrina, Obvious Force for Good, and Mami, Beloved Senpai. We were her only advocate and were doing nothing but trying to help her. Sayaka will be out for blood, Niko will flip out, Kazumi's wrath will be so terrible that she will single-handedly tear open a new Eye of Terror from which a newborn chaos god of vengeance will sally forth, and the rest of the Pleiades will not be far behind them. I do not expect any of them to be fighting to subdue. Sayaka or Kazumi may straight-up declare no quarter.
    • Hijiri dies, actual gemsmash, within about fifteen seconds.
So what does Hijiri value? She'd hurt the Pleiades badly. But is that worth it? Is that what she wants? Or does she just want control over her life? 'Cause being dead isn't exactly conducive to having control of anything, much less over your life.

Can Hijiri follow that chain of logic? I don't think that I'd want to explicitly give it to her if she doesn't, it's a bit... threatening... but it's trivial to talk to her for a bit and shift her horizons outward and get her thinking more about control than about vengeance. Just ask her what she's thinking about and what she wants to do with her life.

On top of all that, I think that the ribbon thing will not actually distract Sabrina, and that means that we can engage Hijiri in therapeutic discussion concurrently. That'd be far more distracting to her than it would be to us, increasing our relative advantage if she can decide to throw her hopes for the future away right in the middle of a discussion about them.

Trying to negotiate an explicit alliance with Hijiri against Yuuri is... risky. From her perspective: Why do we need it? She's already helping, and more importantly, why would we be worried about her trying to backstab us in the first place? It looks super fishy. While I think that asking her to commit to working with us is a good idea, this isn't the right commitment for her. Rather, I think that we should ask her to envision some concrete bit of future that she wants for herself and we can commit to helping her achieve it together. Visualize success - don't just say "I want to be more responsible", say "I want to be able to take care of a cat, and I need these skills and those habits to do so, and this is what that future will look like". Don't just say "I want to live my own life", say "I want to be living in my own apartment and cooking my own food and signing up for my own classes". Not only is that useful therapy, it shifts Hijiri into a strongly constructive long-term mindset that will sharply limit her ability to drive decisions with short-term vengeance logic.

This makes sense... if you're thinking of Hijiri here, now, and on her own. The problem in my eyes however is not Hijiri acting spontaneously, but taking advantage of an opportunity thanks to half of us being distracted. As far as Hijiri's concerned that does put us at half effectiveness. She may have hints, but she hasn't really seen Sabrina's capabilities and so doesn't see the same information we do after all.

If we're the first to find Anri that opportunity also rises from "potentially possible" to "likely". This is a fight we're talking about after all. Things go wrong. Even more true if Anri finds us first.

For another point, if we send out grief sensors, what will they be looking for? Going by the manga, Anri does appear to have something like invisibility so a strictly light based sensor may not necessarily find her, while a massive network of magic might well be rather noticeable to her.

There's also an opportunity cost to consider. Mami so far has been outright good at talking to the Pleiades and she's the one who actually got Hijiri out of the hugpile. If she's the one who deals with Hijiri, she may have far more luck than us.

Just our Grief Sense. If Sabrina makes a Witch Grief thing to help, it should be the Sense Booster, which... I don't think we confirmed it working, but the fact she could make it means it should work, I think.

In that case, instead of simultaneously going forth with the search plan, we need a line for making those sensors and we might, to set aside time for it, and we might do well to ask Mami to talk to Hijiri while that's happening.

Keeping in mind that if anything comes up while that happens, Sabrina cannot respond and cannot be involved in any conversations.

I doubt we're gonna actually make anything; we're already part of the search. Kazumi's coordinating.

I'm not sure how useful the Ribbon thing will be, but it could work very well, even without boosters. It depends on how much Ribbon Mami can unspool, how far, in how many directions; I'd guess Sabrina wouldn't have trouble channeling through any amount of Ribbon Mami can create.

Next update should be Hijiri social, though. It's the important part.

Besides Mami, of course. Mami's always the most important. :p

I am so tempted to vote for Redshirt Army's masterpiece. I may, in fact, do so, simply to see what happens - its content is no different from my own, albeit expressed more generally to loosen requirements on the form.

142 words.

Our magic would be no more noticeable than and move no slower than the search pattern that Kazumi is coordinating, which means that we will be at least as successful as they are if Airi decides to flee. If anything, I expect Mami to be able to move her ribbons significantly faster, easily enough to outrun a fleeing magical girl.

I've added some plausible detection methods.

None of that analysis was predicated on Sabrina's capabilities - the most important part of it was, in fact, the branch where Hijiri successfully OHKO'd Sabrina. Hijiri would have to be unbelievably overconfident to think that she could survive the Pleiades plus Sayaka going from zero to murder in a matter of seconds. Conservation of ninjutsu doesn't appear to exist in PMAS, and Hijiri and Yuuri have less combat experience between them than any single member of our team. They have good powers, but not better than Sayaka's, and are inexperienced with their use. No matter how effective the sneak attack is, even pulling it off in the middle of a fight with Yuuri and taking out our two strongest combatants with their opening salvo, if those two end up in a stand-up fight they will lose and they will lose fast and hard. Above all, recall the projected reactions from Kazumi and Sayaka. Hijiri will die. She will not get another chance; she will not be dodging grabs with paper or anti-magic beams. Sayaka has a Clear Seed and will be spamming lightning bolts powerful enough to burn her to ash. IIRC Kazumi has a Clear Seed and will be spamming Tiro Finales. The rest of the Pleiades will be acting similarly. Completely inhibiting the reluctance to kill is just as terrifying a force multiplier here as it is in real life.

Vebyast should open Meguca Detective Agency.
Our track record is shit, though. :V

I don't know which to vote for, so I shan't.

Additionally, I have a question. Given we have - presumably - saved Kazumi from her canon fate, does that not mean that we effectively terminatored the protagonist of the manga? We stopped her from ever being made?

That's sad.

Someone wants to make a second Kazumi. I think you'd like them.
... Don't remember who, exactly.
Edit: a threadplayer, not a magical girl, obvs.
