Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

[x] Beneath the Horizon of my Contempt Mk 2

I am very much liking this plan I only wish it were possible to reach yellow by the end of the truce : (
Also a side note, are there any questions we can be asking Elder Su after class this turn?

@yrsillar BTW we had a way to count who got a Qi Foundation Pill when in other weeks, but not this week. We know Li Suying had 2 before this week, Li Qing had the same (now 3), Ji Rong had 4 (now probably 5), and Huang Da had 3. Can we know who got them this week?

While it's not a reliable way to calculate Archive pass, it's at least decent enough indicator I think.

I'll add a few sentances about this to the post later but for now... winners this week were Ling Qi, Li Suyin, Ji Rong, Gan Guangli, and Hong Lin(girl who laid you out with tonfas when the spars started)

I'd love to see a quote on that because it's contrary to the Xianxia and frankly makes no damn sense.

@yrsillar Does it seem like Yellow students are being provided with medicine that is equally effective for them as Red students by the Sect in terms of their rewards in addition to whatever stipend of pills they receive? We should be able to ask Meizhen or Han Jian about that pretty trivially.

The pills looked the same to Ling Qi, and Elder Su didn't mention them being different, so Ling Qi assumes so. She's hardly a drug expert though. The only yellow winners so far though have been Han Jian, who just broke through, and Cai Renxiang, who won the first week and then never again.

Now, Huang Da. @yrsillar can probably take it in two directions - one is the "creepist wanna-be rapist", with him ambushing Ling Qi either before or after the truce, and the other is the "creepy suitor", where he strives to show how powerful and suitable he is - and goes after any perceived 'rival'. In the latter case, he's likely to stay at the level he's been at with Li Suyin - creepy greetings, creepy compliments and so on (unless a romantic rival pops up, I suppose).

The former... well, I wouldn't say "I'll drop this quest", but that path goes down some rather uncomfortable trails and is likely to seriously provoke "kill him even if it ends the quest" responses from voters. Even if it doesn't, it's going to turn the quest from "Ling Qi on her journey to cultivate and explore the setting" into "Ling Qi on her mission to defeat Huang Da" - and that's no fun at all.

The latter... that turns Huang Da into a long-term (or at least medium-term) feature of life. He's going to be striving to display his superiority and "suitability", perhaps interfering in social life, definitely interfering if he sees a "rival", probably competing for prizes. However, he's less likely to actually attack Ling Qi (or Li Suyin) in this venue, I think - remember that he stepped forward when he was trying to pick a 'partner' for the pass reward and cultivation at the vent... and almost lost his life. Because he broke through soon after, he doesn't seem to hold a grudge, but I suspect he'll not take any 'direct action' any time soon. He's given up on chasing away any of the trio from the vent, and I wager the rest of the grace period is going to be sheer effort to improve on everyone's part - including him.

In conclusion, I think Ling Qi should keep Huang Da in mind, but shouldn't base her schedule around anticipating having to deal with him in a more permanent fashion. As long as she improves herself and strengthens her ties to her allies, she should be just fine.

EDIT: Do not neglect the social actions. Allies mean that Ling Qi is that much safer, and they're also people to learn from and cooperate with on ventures.

Just in case it was missed, yeah not intending to make this overly dark.

I disagree on asking Gu Xiulan for help here. Right now? It earns us very little. If we're training with the crew while obviously pushing ourselves hard, those social links are maintained. If we're warning our allies, then Huang Da's potential threat level is at least managed for the moment. Gu Xiulan is going to offer social advise. I'm certain it will be useful, but it's not particularly pertinent to our final push to both try to impress Elder Su and be better protected once the violence starts. Better to start having those discussions once we're Yellow/Silver and have stabilized our situation to a degree.

I don't see why we wouldn't be able to, but let's check.

@yrsillar - can we study arts in class?

I'd put them in because I'm not convinced that we *are* solid in leveling them in one action. This way, if they level, great. If they don't, we can push them again next turn.

You can cultivate arts in ZHou's class rather than physical, if you like

People you have to remember that shoehorning in actual actions as free actions lead to sub-par results. The "Warn Gu Xuilian and Han Jian that we've picked up a Stalker" is pretty much trying to do the Gu Xiulan action without doing her action and people advocating of asking about the tokens are trying to do the tokens action without doing the tokens action. I think the free actions and question part of the votes are going a bit out of control here. These things are full actions for a reason...

@yrsillar is trying to do full actions as free actions really ok like some of these plans seem to be trying?

To expand on this, I don;t mind one or maybe two if they're related to the main action, just keep in mind that the more stuff that gets stuffed into the vote the less time I have to focus on the actual scenes in the update if I want to get it out in a reasonable time.

This acceptable?:

I'm removing the tokens as to not game the system too much.

That's a full action "Explore the Mountain".

That's fine, production hall was gonna be on the shopping list anyway, you only didn;t see it last time because it was added to the hang with Xiulan option

Just binged the quest, and i gotta say, holy fuck op

Thank you, I think?

Seriously, I don't donate money to just any QMs, this game here's probably my number one most anticipated Quest at the moment, it's well written, with likable characters, and has an interesting system going with it.

Even if I scream internally with stuff like Creeperman being a thing. Just, eew, make it go away.

Also binged this quest,
I feel that calling Huang Da a creeper is wrong
dude is odd and anti-social
but dehumanizing him is not the answer.
In my opinion,
he is a blessing in disguise.
The Dao is mysterious and impenetrable
yet reveals itself in an ephemeral instance.
To risk all on one reckless moment.
To advance against a difficult foe.
Is it not in such times of adversity,
that the Dao itself is cultivated?
Without tribulation,
there can be no ascension.

Ditto, I've never even considered doing it, now I'm wading through he mess of updating a PayPal account without having the cards themselves on hand, or really remembering theproper login and password.

Too bad about the conversion rate, I think I will only be able to shell ~$7 a month. Four years ago, I be getting $15 for the same price.

Translation: Rapey creepers are strong motivation to get good.

Well, you're not wrong.

Huh. Gan Guangli now has a second pill, and Hong Lin, if she is the same one from last week, also does. That might mean they are now competitive for Archive Pass.

Also, *shakes fist at people wanting to go to shop instead of awesome Gu Xuilan action*. Also who prefers phys to AS, even though that phys action very much makes sense as it makes getting peak gold very reliable on week 12.

@TotallyNotEvil Can you make two modifications to your post?
first, switch when you cultivate physical and FVM, as while cultivating Physical with Li Suyin and not alone might help a bit the Physical dices (unknown), cultivating an Art with her will help Spiritual and Art dices instead, so +2 to 4 3 different full actions instead of for one and a half actions. Given how low Art dices are, it's fairly important.

Second, please add my question to Elder Su :(

Gu Xuilan just doesn't make sense as an action at this point. It would have as part of a series of actions to deal with the issues, bring our allies together, and start building up our defenses, but it does little as an orphan.

I think it's helpful in order to lay the foundations for latter when we want to hunt him. Also, it goes well with asking to bring Li Suyin/Lu Sing to the group training.

Maybe I just like Gu Xiulan though.

I fully expect Gu Xiulan to pull out an instrument after we reveal FVM. We can form a band. It'll be great.

Edit: I'm not sure why, but I figure her for a tambourine player. It just fits.

[X] Plan Market and Celestial Tokens
-[X] [Pills] Two Red Stone
-[X] [Free action] Warn our friends about Huang Da and our plans of doing drugs.
-[X] [Free action] Refill Qi Cards. One for Mist of Vale and ally if possible, one for Crescent's Grace, and ask Bai Meizhen to fill the last.
-[X] Instructor Zhou Class (Locked-In)
--[X] Start using arts in class. Now that an enemy knows about them, it's more valuable to try and improve in a real world situation then keep them hidden.
-[X] Go up to the vent to cultivate with Su Ling and Li Suyin
--[X] Physical Cultivation
-[X] Talk to Han Jian, he did mention wanting to do some training
--[X] Sable Crescent Step
--[X] See about inviting Su Ling and Li Suyin
-[X] Head to the market for some shopping
--[X] Try and find the original owner first to sell the staff, as she's likely to want it the most thus be the best customer due to it's status as heirloom. Check her background first, and if she's liable to initiate conflict gift it to Elder Su instead.
--[X] With Gu Xuilan's aid.
-[X] Try to puzzle out the tokens left from the test
--[X] Ask Gi Xuilan and Han Jian if they figured out what they can do.

As the author has repeated several times now, going to the market automatically includes going to the production hall as well as getting a list of items to purchase. Thus, I went with the market action with my previous addendum of trying to look for the previous owner due to the high likelihood of them being the best customer for it, and having Gu Xuilan's social and market knowledge should aid us.

Second is working out the celestial tokens that we got from the Zhao's test as if they weren't relevant, they wouldn't have an action in the first place. It would be rather foolish of us if we had something valuable within our possession but simply never took advantage of it.

"There are a handful of such sites on every one of the sects mountains. This mountain has the smallest and least potent deposits. It is why the Sect is located here. At least on this mountain, they are hidden as prizes for enterprising disciples," Bai Meizhen replied. "I had thought I was on the path to one of them, but I had not been able to penetrate the illusory formation around it."

...That would explain the easiness of the cliffside path, Ling Qi thought. She had wondered why no one had found it from that side, but she had been too distracted to really think about it. She glanced to Su Ling, who shrugged irritably.

"I could smell a bunch of qi in the air meant to lead us off track. Figured it was some beast marking its territory," Su Ling mumbled self consciously, not meeting any of your eyes.

"I believe I will find the time to join you," Bai Meizhen mused. "It would prove a boon in allowing me to complete the Argent Soul and move on to other tasks," she seemed pretty pleased to Ling Qi.

The four of them spent some time after discussing when the best time to spend up there would be, and in the end agreed to meet after Ling Qi's morning lessons. Once that had been decided, they broke up and went their own ways. Li Suyin and Su Ling to rest and her and Meizhen to do their own cultivation.
Okay, so it looks like we've maxed out exploration gains here. That's the top reward category.

Which is good because exploring off the beaten trail is no longer safe. We have Meizhen backing us up, so using the vent is safe, but with Huang Da, it's NOT safe to go anywhere with less than either the full gang or Meizhen.

Argent Soul 4 is even more awesome than expected.
"You cost me quite a bit," he added in a more dangerous tone. "My escape talisman, two dozen red stones worth of treatment… it was really an expensive night."
Okay, so we can expect Huang Da to be substantially more cautious for a while. He doesn't have a "get out of shit free" card anymore in reserve, and we wiped out much of his financial reserves.

He frowned, managing to look truly put out for a moment. "Well, I wanted to celebrate my breakthrough, and as the muse that finally drove me to break through the peak, I thought it only polite," he responded.

Ling Qi stiffened, backing up a step from the boy, suddenly leery. "You're bluffing."

He pushed himself up to stand straight, 'looking' her directly in the eye. "I'm afraid not. I acheived yellow soul just yesterday. It's all thanks to you, which is why I'm willing to waive past debts," he said a smile playing on his lips. "Li Suyin was more dangerous than I expected, but you… yes. The two of them could not have even touched me without you. I have decided that I want you," he continued, making the hairs on the back of her neck stand up as he raised his hand as if to cradle her cheek.

He's acting creepy, I think, as much to deter us from predating on HIM after rounding up all our allies, as because he's a creeper. This is a dominance display, designed to show strength, or he wouldn't have been meeting us here in a crowded area and mentioning his breakthrough where everyone could hear.

He's lost an advantage, anyone with eyes to see would have realized he was injured recently and he doesn't know the technique card was a one off yet. For all he knows the next time he picks a fight we'd pull a Yu-gi-oh duelist imitation and lay down another technique card he can't afford to be hit by right now.

...not that Ling Qi has the kind of social awareness needed to read the metadata.

He broke through because he needed to. He spoke with us in public because he had to be heard to have broken through early, because we're a known ally of Han Jian who's also broken through. At the same time, he throws bait around Ling Qi, publically marking his territory so as to speak, so that she'd find it harder to gain more allies because they would not risk crossing a Yellow over her, AND channels his enemies at Ling Qi, because hey, if he's interested in her, then if Ling Qi is taken out it'd hurt Huang Da and she's sure to be an easier target than a Yellow.

If he didn't the sheer amount of resources he expended to recover from the fight and the knowledge that he got spanked by three not particularly strong girls(and people would be able to realize who he fought with by simply tracking the injuries) would have brought him even more challenges and risked crippling his progress from challenges.

Better then, for him to sacrifice getting an optimal foundation here in favor of immediate power, because he's not getting optimal at all otherwise when the sharks smell blood.

Oh right and the vote:
[X] Beneath the Horizon of my Contempt Mk 2

Ling Qi's trudge back to disciple housing was less than pleasant. She still felt sore and sluggish, and more than one of her fellow disciples seemed to take that as a sign that it was fine to 'accidentally' bump into her, or otherwise cause trouble, one asshole even knocked her down as he pushed past her without a word, in the plaza. Asshole, it was one of those guys who had tried to rob her the first week after the test too.

She committed his ratty face to memory along with the girls off to the side tittering at her plight. Nothing really concerning happened on the way back thankfully, but she still had a scowl fixed pretty firmly on her face by the time she was rapping her knuckles on Suyin's door.
Soon. Soon our stealing spree/revenge will happen. Mwawawawawa.

I think it's helpful in order to lay the foundations for latter when we want to hunt him. Also, it goes well with asking to bring Li Suyin/Lu Sing to the group training.

Ah, I will just make all cultivation at the vent, then.

And I suspect the answer to your question to be "you will know when you reach it".

Hm? I do believe Yrsillar said we can keep it as Production Hall to the same effect.
I think they are saying that Market include Producing Hall but Producing Hall doesn't include Market. That doesn't sound like something @yrsillar would do though.
And I suspect the answer to your question to be "you will know when you reach it".
What? How would we know how to earn/get the next scroll when we finish AS5?

[x] Beneath the Horizon of my Contempt.

Superior to the revised version floating around. Continuing AS progress with a proper roll is more likely to secure that library pass for us.

Speaking of, @TheLastOne would you consider adding a Qi Foundation pill to your plan? It's not ideal with the action spread, but our last week's performance should secure us a pill, which is all we need for the tea week. With people wanting to get a breakthrough as soon as possible, we might as well use what pills we can.

If people are worried about lacking the physical cultivation to breakthrough on week13, we can always spend an action of physical cultivation then, when we're not competing for a unique resource.

@CircleTheSkies, @Vanguard_D, I am switching my vote because of tactical voting reeasons. The more I think about it and the more the current winning vote has much too low odds of impressing Elder Su for my paranoia-addled mind.

[x] Beneath the Horizon of my Contempt.

@TheLastOne And yeah, I'll also add to the 'please use a Qi Foundation Pill', simply because we might not have enough weeks before we get to either Yellow or Silver to use them in an optimal manner, so might has well use them when we can. Likewise, it's probably better to switch the FVM and ZB action, as training FVM in the hot spring is better as long as we get a Art training with Li Suyin elsewhere (in this case ZB).

I really don't think focusing on AS 5 is going to impress Elder Su at all. In fact I think it might do the opposite.

From the week 8 update:
Elder Su's smile grew slightly warmer, and Ling Qi thought she sensed more approval. "That is a good question," she responded immediately. "And an ambitious one," she added with a bit of wry humor. "Not that there is anything wrong with that," she continued musingly, still standing in front of Ling Qi with perfect poise. A brief glance toward the student seating was the only movement the older woman made. "It is advisable that you reach the late stage of the red soul before attempting to form the next layer of that art. If only so that you do not fall behind your peers. The Argent Soul and it's more advanced forms are one of the foundations of our Sect, but it is important not to forget practical things."

Ling Qi nodded in understanding. "So does that mean I should try to complete the next layer before breaking through?"

"It will improve such attempts," Elder Su concurred. "While even cultivators of extremely low talent can expect to break through to the Yellow stage in time, it still no easy thing. Certain benefits will be lost if you choose to break through first, but it is a matter of weighing your desires and needs. Going beyond the fourth layer will not provide any additional benefits at the Red Soul Stage though."

"Thank you Elder Su," Ling Qi murmured, finally raising her head and straightening her back.

She was advising balancing our needs as to whether to break through even to AS4 before we went to yellow soul and advocated remembering the practical things as well as improving our AS cultivation.

Getting through to AS4 before breaking through might well impress her, but maintaining the focus on the Argent Soul art rather than our other practicals despite it having no practical benifits at our level and risking us falling behind our peers strikes me as something she wouldn't look favourably on given her previous advice to us.
