Lights... Camera... ACTION!!: A Hollywood Quest

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi Magoose here one of the guys helping Duke.

So we have some bad news.

The quest has been canceled as duke does not want to write it anymore.

I'm going to ask if I can take over for it, because I like this quest, and it would be a shame to kill it
TBF, Mags, you have been doing a lot of the heavylifting for the quest, so this will be in good hands. :)

To be clear to everyone, this is just me burning out on imagination of the quest, since my muse has been hitting me over the head a lot with so many different ideas that I just can't find myself too interested in this.

I'll still hang out here, though, since this still does have a sepcial place in my heart.

I'd like to thank you all for making this a wonderful experience while it lasted.

I'd also like to thank @Magoose, @Fluffy_serpent, and @Martin Noctis for doing so much to help prepare and write this quest. I couldn't have done it without you all. :D

I'll see you all around.

With so many regards, Duke William Of.

@Kaiser Chris I like your plan- especially since it has a workout option. But, could you add in an invest option to start utilizing the oil field we have? Mike told us to start as soon as possible, and we should probably follow his suggestion.

I will if Magoose says we need to do it. I just assumed since it wasn't on the list of options that it was being done in the background or we needed to deal with Sacramento first.

Through the Mouths of Babes
Through the Mouths of Babes:

About roughly once a week, Bruce, Carrie, and Mary volunteered at the local soup kitchen. It was their way of giving back to the community and teaching their daughter the importance of compassion and helping those in need. They would spend their Sunday afternoons after church preparing meals, serving food, and assisting in any way they could.

On a sunny morning in October, the family arrived at the soup kitchen ready to lend a hand. The smell of freshly cooked food filled the air as they greeted the other volunteers and got to work. Bruce put on an apron and headed to the grill to start making burgers, while Carrie went to the back to organize the pantry shelves.

Mary, who was always full of curiosity, was perched in her stroller, watching the bustling activity around her. She giggled and waved her tiny hands at the people passing by. As Bruce flipped patties on the grill, he would glance over at his daughter, ensuring she was safe and entertained.

However, on this particular day, as Bruce turned to check on Mary, he noticed that she was no longer in her stroller. Panic surged through him as he scanned the crowd, searching for his daughter. His heart raced, and he called out to Carrie, who immediately abandoned her task and joined him in the search.

They frantically combed through the sea of people, their worry growing with each passing second. Then, amidst the commotion, they noticed a homeless woman sitting on a bench, signing with her hands. To their surprise, Mary was sitting beside her, captivated by the woman's gestures.

Bruce and Mary approached them cautiously, their relief mixed with curiosity. The homeless woman, a frequent vistor that they vaguely recalled as Angela, was fluent in sign language and had been using it to communicate with Mary. Angela had been teaching Mary the basics the last few months, and it seemed that their daughter was not only learning but thoroughly enjoying herself, as the months passed, Mary's signing skills improved to the point she was almost fluent.

Mary clapped her hands excitedly as her parents reached her. It was clear that she had taken a liking to Angela and the language she was using. Bruce and Carrie felt a mix of gratitude and amazement. They never expected their daughter to pick up sign language at such a young age, let alone from a homeless woman at a soup kitchen. Appproacing Angela with a mix of gratitude and curiosity. Mary sat beside Angela, clapping her hands excitedly.

"Angela, thank you so much for looking after Mary! We were so worried when we couldn't find her." Bruce said, gratefully.

"Oh, it was no trouble at all. Your daughter is a delight, and it seems she has a natural affinity for sign language." Angela said, smiling warmly.

"Sign language? Mary hasn't been exposed to it before. How did she start picking it up?" Carrie said, curious.

"She was sitting here, watching me sign with some of the other volunteers. I noticed her trying to imitate the gestures, so I started teaching her a few basic signs. She caught on quickly and seemed eager to learn more." Angela said, having gestured toward Mary.

Mary clapped her hands and signed "thank you," imitating the sign Angela had shown her earlier.

"That's incredible! We had no idea Mary would take such an interest in sign language. We're grateful that you've been teaching her." Bruce said, bewildered, given that whenever he tried teaching her Irish, all she did was giggle and give him a blank eyed stare.

"Angela, how did you become so fluent in sign language? It's truly impressive." Carrie asked thoughtfully.

"I learned sign language years ago when I had a job as a sign language interpreter. Life took some unexpected turns, and I found myself homeless. But my knowledge of sign language has stayed with me, and I've always hoped to put it to good use," she said after a time, having taken a few moments to reflect.

"We're sorry to hear about your circumstances, Angela. But it's clear that your skills are making a difference in Mary's life. We'd love to learn more about sign language too, if you're willing to teach us." Bruce asked sympathetically, glancing at Carrie to confirm they'd reached the same conclusion, that Angela would be seeing some sort of windfall soon to improve her living situation...and then noted that the apartment building might not cut it anymore.

"I would be honored to teach all of you. It's a language of connection and understanding, and I believe it can bring people closer together." Angela said gratefully.

And so, the conversation continued, as Bruce, Carrie, and Angela sat together, sharing stories, learning signs, and forging a bond that would extend beyond the soup kitchen, and with Mary's tiny hand tightly clasped in his, Bruce thanked Angela for her kindness and for looking after their daughter. Angela smiled warmly, her eyes gleaming with a sense of purpose and connection. She explained that teaching Mary sign language was her way of giving back as well. It was a beautiful exchange of knowledge and compassion.

As he turned away, Bruce couldn't help catch an offhand comment from Angela that threw him off guard. "Oh, she's such a dear, she's been meeting with a number of us to learn all sorts of skills...why just last week, she managed to achieve a stalemate in chess with Mr. Eisenhardt!"

Beyond the sudden jolt that Mary had done this countless times before with many other strangers...his mind suddenly flicked back to last month: had she actually been the one to reach the potatoes?

the Art of War, Blade & Sorcery
the Art of War, Blade & Sorcery:

Bruce O'Brian had always been fascinated by the rich history of European martial arts and their unique techniques, his dreams filled with its whispers as his father had once shared with him stories from the old country, Lugh, Cu Challain, Brian, Celtchar and so on, and only reinforced as he read Lord of the Rings and Conan the Barbarian. He believed that these ancient forms of combat held immense value, but they had been largely forgotten over time, and thus determined to revive and preserve this forgotten knowledge, Bruce embarked on an ambitious journey- the ever distant dream. Over the years as he worked tirelessly to build of his professional reputation as an actor, he slowly built up the connections with those that shared his deep passion for historical combat, eventually managing to secure a private funding for a study into these arcane matters, hiding its funding in a business expense. With the door finally opened after nearly a decade of it being a pipe dream, Bruce poured much his heart and soul into the research, traveling to various libraries and archives, scouring ancient texts and manuscripts. It was during one of his expeditions that he stumbled upon a remarkable discovery. Hidden within the hallowed shelves of a dusty, forgotten library the Smithsonian, Bruce found a recently found manual written by the Roman writer Claudia Nerva. The manual contained detailed descriptions and illustrations of ancient Roman martial arts techniques, and while it was fairly bare bones and not at all as impressive as much as her other works, it was still a treasure trove of forgotten knowledge, a key to unlocking the secrets of the past.

Excited and filled with a sense of purpose, Bruce dedicated himself to deciphering and understanding the contents of the manual, gathering other researchers, other martial artists like Jackie and Yuna, to aid him. He spent countless hours studying, analyzing, and practicing the techniques described within its pages. It was a process that took him almost half a decade to overcome the greatest of its challenges,
those challenges that tested his perseverance, skill, and dedication to resurrecting the ancient European martial arts, from: translating Latin to decipher its text to translate it accurately, with him needing to to consult numerous experts in ancient languages (including one very eager Jesuit) and rely on his own research skills to decode the meaning behind the words and expressions used in the manual; the general lack visual references as many of the illustrations in the manual were not always clear or detailed, making it difficult for Bruce to visualize and understand the techniques accurately, forcing him and others to rely on their knowledge of basic martial arts principles, and using historical context to fill in the gaps; a general lack of contextual understanding, as historical martial arts techniques were often deeply rooted in the culture and time period in which they originated, forcing him and the others to immerse themselves in the historical context of the manual to comprehend the underlying principles and strategies behind the techniques, which often required extensive research into the cultural, social, and historical aspects of ancient Europe; some were physical imitations, as some techniques described in the manual may have been physically demanding or required a level of flexibility and strength that differed from modern martial arts practices, forcing them to adapt and train their bodies to perform these techniques accurately, often pushing himself beyond his comfort zone and breaking through physical limitations; the availability of historical texts and references on European martial arts was limited, compared to the wealth of information available on other martial arts styles from Asia, which didn't often translate perfectly due to many of them lacking a weapons component, and as Bruce had to rely on fragmentary sources, obscure manuscripts, and archaeological findings to piece together the puzzle of ancient European combat techniques; and finally, the preservation of authenticity, as Bruce's goal having been from the begining to recreate European martial arts in their most authentic form possible, meaning he had, more than often, to resist the temptation to modernize or adapt the techniques to fit contemporary martial arts styles, requiring a level of discipline and a deep respect for historical accuracy to ensure that the essence of the ancient techniques remained intact.

But still, he persevered.

As Bruce's knowledge grew, he one day realized that he had stumbled upon something truly unique, a diamond in the rough. Created from a patchwork from across the entirety of Europe, involving no less than a hundred martial artists and researchers, all of them, together, had not only rediscovered ancient techniques but also developed a deeper understanding of their historical context, and recognizing the need to distinguish this martial art from others, to honor its roots while acknowledging its revival, after much contemplation, Bruce decided to name his creation "Historical European Martial Arts" or HEMA for short.

With the knowledge he had acquired and the techniques he had honed, Bruce set out to spread the word about HEMA. Using Bruce Lee's Gym, he began a series of workshops, seminars, and demonstrations, sharing his passion with fellow martial artists, enthusiasts and the after school kids. His dedication and expertise attracted a growing community of practitioners, all eager to learn the forgotten ways of the European warriors. The journey had been long, tireless, and honestly just a little too much to juggle at times, but Bruce O'Brian's tireless efforts had paid off, becoming a respected figure in the field of historical combat, as his dedication to authenticity and unwavering commitment to preserving the legacy of European martial arts became something of an inspiration for many. But much of that didn't matter, as he had accomplished what he had set out to do: to breathe new life into forgotten traditions, bridging the gap between ancient and modern martial arts. And while many in these specialized fields saw Bruce O'Brian, the student of Bruce Lee and friend of Jackie Chan, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of martial arts, forever remembered as the visionary who brought Historical European Martial Arts back to life, all Bruce was proud of was this: This was the closest he had ever come to actually feeling like Cu Chulainn, Aragorn, and Conan, a myth from the old legends.

Now though, now was the time to make new legends.

And as he stared out over his first class on the subject, full of an anxious energy to showoff this cool thing he'd made, it struck him how surreal it all felt, now that the dream had fully crystalized into reality; so he took a deep breath, and began with the basics, pacing at the front of the classroom as he did so, his fellow instructors for today, Yuna, Carrie and Brandon, behind him.

"Many of those skilled in technological warfare believe that physical training and discipline are unnecessary. With the atom bomb, rockets, tanks, and the mental resources to direct them, muscular strength and agility are thought to be merely conceits. They are wrong. The mind and body are linked together in a meshwork of oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and neuron health. Physical exercise drives that meshwork, stimulating the brain and freeing one's intellect. Simulated combat has the additional virtue of training the eye to spot small errors and exploit them. A change in focus can also allow the subconscious mind to focus on unresolved questions. Simulated combat often ends with the warrior discovering that one or more of those questions has been unexpectedly solved. And occasionally, such exercise can serve other purposes."

He paused, and focused unexpectedly sharp eyes on his students.

"And so, in the grand tradition of old, I will expect nothing less than your best...let's begin with the basics."

Unbeknownst to Bruce, Carrie had George had recording this class for posterity, and already his mind swarmed with ideas and concepts beyond imagining.

[EDIT: While virtually identical to the OTL version of HEMA, there are a few differences, mostly stemming from what was mentioned earlier, but Bruce also instituted stricter standards for "ranking up" (ie mastery) and requiring the usage of a primary/secondary weapons pair (typically spear/longsword, but not always).]

First instinct is Two, but is Three related to finding a series of otherwise lost manuals that would otherwise be lost to history?

Carrie's Showtime
Carrie's Showtime

When most people imagined life in the O'Brien household, they usually imagined a life of extravagant luxury: constant weekend trips to Aruba, caviar for every meal, spun silk sheets, etc. Which, to be fair, Carrie did select very comfortable Egyptian cotton sheets and they did sometimes go on trips to places that would seem exotic but really weren't. But, mostly life at the O'Briens was one of work, excersise, and reading. Lots and lots of reading.

Which was why Bruce didn't blink an eye when he saw the two ladies of his life poring over books: Mary was studiously writing in crayon in a textbook of something called "Linear Algebra" that Gavin had given to his "Genius of a Niece" and Carrie was reading "Heaven is a Playground" while surrounded by binders of information. She was taking her new ownership of the LA Lakers with the same drive and seriousness that made her a world class singer, actress, and the first woman billionaire. It humbled Bruce that he was so lucky to have the two ladies in his life and he went over and hugged them both.

Mary giggled and looked up from her crayon to point at an equation and state "non-Ewkidian spathe is funny, daddy!"

Which made him both smile and also reminded Bruce that he really needed to crack open a book on Mathematics. It was cute that his daughter's still-developing soft palate made her lisp words, but he thought it'd be at least a decade before he didn't understand something she was talking about. Not a few years. His confusion must have shown.

"It's okay, Bruce. She's been laughing about Euclid for an hour now," Carrie said as she leaned in to his hug," I am so happy that our little daughter is smart."

"I am so happy both my ladies are smart," Bruce said," What is smart mommy reading right now?"

"I'm reading about what makes basketball beautiful to its fans...and also the raw statistics of various college basketball players. Cooke picked Magic Johnson as our first pick because of his ability and smile. I think that it might be time to change how the team approaches the game."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, when you were making your Olympic documentary, you got to watch the players. I think you even met Kenny Carr, right?"

"Yeah- nice guy. Really good on the outside."

"But, did you like watching the games? I was thinking of the documentary and of the stage. I think that Jerry might have had a point."

"Jerry- who's he?"

"Jerry Buss- you know, the guy I beat out for the Lakers. He was perfectly nice about it and we actually have been talking a lot about sports. I think he might want to cross-promote with the Kings. Creative guy. But, he had an interesting point about basketball. How it is currently being played too slow and not entertaining enough. And, honestly, reading all these things- he might be right on two areas."

"That playing faster and more up-tempo might be good for both entertainment but also as a way to defeat other teams?"

"Yes- how'd you know? Are you a secret basketball fan?"

"I mean, I will be now. Can't be the husband of the owner of the Lakers and NOT enjoy the sport. But, no- I was thinking of my Master's philosophy of fighting. When the opponents are used to going slow, get them off their tempo- speed it up."

"Oh, Bruce said that? I like that. I was thinking more of how shows on Broadway kept on using the same format over and over again. But that the true greats, the true originals that people flocked for tickets for were different. The trick is doing it well...Jerry suggested a coach. And I think he might be right.

If we want the Lakers to be a success, we have to win. Nothing makes a show successful in the long-run like initial success. But, it also has to be entertaining to watch. He suggested a man named Jack McKinney to make a fast offense around Magic. And I think he might be right."

"Sounds like he's full of good ideas."

"Well, not all. He also had the idea of scantily clad cheerleaders. Call them "Laker Girls"."

"...
Huh."

Carrie rolled her eyes and smacked her husband's arm.

"Men." she deadpanned

"Men, daddy!" Mary squealed in delight.

Ah, an omake showing Carrie getting an idea for the Showtime and putting the seeds for the fast break offense that the Magic ran to such awesome effect?

I love it.

[]Carrie is taking things very seriously. (Carrie gains a bonus for her end-of-the-year update for the Lakers)

[]The Showtime begins (Autopass How Carrie is doing action)

Jack and Carrie Have Lunch. Oh, and Bruce is There.
Jack and Carrie Have Lunch. Oh, and Bruce is There.

Staring at an attractive young woman, Bruce found that he had absolutely nothing to say. Not because he was tongue-tied (he was married to who he would always see as the most beautiful woman in the world) but because upon talking with the 19-year old Kelly Lebrock he found they had nothing in common. She was a Vogue model who partied hard at Studio 54 while seeking the limelight. Bruce had that one world-famous advertising campaign, but he mostly worked and stayed at home with his family and friends, shunning fame as much as he could.

Bruce wondered, for the first time in his 26-year old life, if he was getting old and looked askance at Carrie, who had shifted her chair aside and was deep in discussion with Jack Nicholson.

"So...have you tried acting?" he asked. Lamely, in his own mind.

This wasn't how he imagined this meeting to go. When Mike had called earlier in the week telling him that Jack Nicholson was interested in having lunch with him and Carrie, he had been very interested. Jack was an amazing actor and Bruce could easily see him as his first choice in so many roles- maybe that screenplay that Stephen had pitched about the crazy alcoholic. Even more exciting for Bruce was the opportunity to work with a fellow actor at the peak of his craft.

But when Bruce and Carrie met Jack and his date at La Scalla, Jack had said, "Bruce, Carrie. It's a pleasure to meet you both. This is Kelly. Bruce: I love your movies and your style. I'll shoot almost any movie with you as long as the schedule is local on Lakers home games. Now, if you don't mind, I'd like to speak to Carrie about something very important. What are you planning on doing with my Lakers?"

"Your Lakers?" Carrie asked with a quirk of her brow.

"Now, I know you're the owner. But a team isn't just the owners: it's also the fan's. Maybe more so- I've been a season ticket holder since 1970. I've been with the team for its ups and downs. Frankly, I've cried real tears of pain and joy over the years. All I'm asking is that you don't break my heart: what's the plan with our team."

And that was the last Jack talked with him. He wasn't rude about it...well, not intentionally. He and Carrie just shifted to the side of the table and started talking about the Lakers. There was definitely a miscommunication: Jack hadn't wanted to have lunch with Bruce and Carrie. He had wanted to have lunch with Carrie...and Bruce. Bruce would have been very, very annoyed, but honestly...if he had the opportunity to talk with George Steinbrenner he probably would do the same.

"Well, I've been taking acting classes," Kelly said in a pleasantly British accent," but casting has been hard. I've been told I have a very "European" look and-"

"More entertaining? Basketball is the most entertaining sport around!" Jack said with both of his iconic eyebrows raised. Not yelling- but loud enough to be heard. A bit like how Bruce would rib his own friends over the Yankees over a pint.

"It is- but that doesn't mean that it can be more entertaining. Anyways, I've looked a the stats and the tape- basketball has gotten a bit too comfortable in its play. New injection of blood and ideas'll do the team a world of good."

"Look, Carrie. I'm all for trying new things out- we're actors, stretching our limits is what it's all about. But we're talking the Lakers here- its not a show. It's competition, it's sports. It's championships."

"I know, Jack. I didn't buy the team just for the heck of it: I mean to make a championship team. I don't want to own just a "Los Angeles" basketball team- I want to own the best f'n team in basketball. I think it already is- I just want to make it so that everyone else is forced to agree."

Jack Nicholson rubbed his chin with his hand and nodded after a moment.

"I like that- the fire in your eyes. Well, I'm convinced that you mean what you say. And I hope to god that you're right...it'll be nice to have another championship home game. And, if there's anything I can do to help make it come true...you have my number. But, speaking of excitement...have you ever seen college games? They have these cheerleaders and I think..."

Kelly rolled her eyes at the last sentence as Jack and Carrie once again started to speak in quieter tones.

"Men." Bruce agreed.

OOC: I just was tickled by the idea of Jack Nicholson reacting to a change in ownership.

Bruce would have been very, very annoyed, but honestly...if he had the opportunity to talk with George Steinbrenner he probably would do the same.

You know you just gave me the idea for a Seinfeld episode where Bruce becomes a partial owner of the Yankees and Steinbrenner tasks George with getting Bruce familiar with his responsibility with the team. Bruce is somehow convinced that George is the secret to the Yankees recent streak of fortune and becomes obsessed with him, Jerry desperately wants to meet with Bruce to pitch him the Jerry pilot, and somehow the episode ends with Bruce buying a script from Kramer.

I wonder if we'll have an opportunity to buy Buccaneers or Seahawks in the future?
Maybe Redskins to prevent the reign of Dan Snyder.
