Lights... Camera... ACTION!!: A Hollywood Quest

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi Magoose here one of the guys helping Duke.

So we have some bad news.

The quest has been canceled as duke does not want to write it anymore.

I'm going to ask if I can take over for it, because I like this quest, and it would be a shame to kill it
TBF, Mags, you have been doing a lot of the heavylifting for the quest, so this will be in good hands. :)

To be clear to everyone, this is just me burning out on imagination of the quest, since my muse has been hitting me over the head a lot with so many different ideas that I just can't find myself too interested in this.

I'll still hang out here, though, since this still does have a sepcial place in my heart.

I'd like to thank you all for making this a wonderful experience while it lasted.

I'd also like to thank @Magoose, @Fluffy_serpent, and @Martin Noctis for doing so much to help prepare and write this quest. I couldn't have done it without you all. :D

I'll see you all around.

With so many regards, Duke William Of.

Okay what are people's opinions behind DC comics and if we should get that or Marvel. I know a few people have very firm opinions on not doing comics, but if we get either DC or Marvel, I promise not to have Lucasfilms create a comic universe of films until the 2000's. It's impossible to make great and timeless superheroes at this point because the tech is too crap. We'll just greenlight any films someone wants to do with the property and be hands off for 20 years, which will be a few years IRL.

@Magoose Why is Star Trek being auctioned off? I actually looked it up and it turns out that Paramount currently owns the rights to it.
I'll make an argument as to why we shouldn't go for DC, and not involve my love for all things Marvel into it.

First, the Price. 200 Million in order to get DC, and I'm not sure if that's the maximum but let's say it is. We could buy the Comics, we could make the movies, that's all true, but at the same time we're taking away 200 million from our warchest (which as we've seen is closer to 495 million so in a single purchase we've already slashed our warchest in nearly half) and that's without taking into account the rest of our purchases which would take up the rest of said warchest leaving us with a shoestring budget for the kind of movies we want to make unless we limit the amount of movies which will piss off our directors, Mike, etc.

Which leads us to...

Second, Future plans. We're about to being our budget plans for the future decade of Lucasfilms, with the movies that we want to make like The Kung Fu Kid, Marathon Madness, Conan, Solomon Kane, Moonlight Diner, etc. These movies cost money, money which we won't have after such extravagant purchase. Money which aside from movies could have very well served us in establishing an Animation Department, or perhaps a Television Studio, perhaps giving more help to Mike's Merchandising guys who're already running themselves ragged. And That's without mentioning how perhaps a sudden crisis/opportunity may appear and need us to shell some cash.

With that, I give my 2 cents as to why we should not buy DC, and let it go to other studios.
I totally disagree with you for a few main reasons...

  • First of all, do yo really think that buying Marvel is going to be any cheaper? We are picking up the bones of a broken company buying Marvel is probably going to be twice as much
  • Second we will be getting our own comic studio that we can use to publish Star Wars stories to expand the universe and gaining all the profit, and the same with the other stories that they possess.
  • We would be getting Superman and Batman, such Colossal Juggernauts that despite the dominance of Marvel still beats them in merchandising sales.
  • And finally, the 80s are coming this will bring plenty of British Comic Books authors create some of the best stories in any media (Watchmen, Animal Man, V for Vendetta, Sandon...) and the same will happen with Vertigo a few years after that (Hellblazer, Fables, Preacher, Transmetropolotan...) ans we get the rights to ALL of it...
So for now approval vote for every Plan getting DC

One major part of Lucasfilms' reputation is that it has an insanely gifted eye for talent where it can spot diamonds covered in a pile of shit and make them ten times their value. We took stuff that people had no faith in like Josey Wales and Taxi Driver and turned them into box office hits and critical and public beloved masterpieces. If we buy a bunch of these old films and are willing to bid high, then Universal thinks we're playing 6d chess and overshoots us. So Sidney is wasting all this money on established films and thus even though we lose them, we bleed our opponents dry and hit the jackpot with our primary targets.

This doesn't seem like a good use of funds.

I don't believe that the QM has stated that Lucasfilms has a reputation in Universal as people with amazing eye for talent. From Universals' reactions, it seems like they think of us as a good producer (note we have not made remakes) who got lucky with some friends. Even if they decide to spend the funds to outbid us on some of the movies (let's be generous and say they get 50% of the movies)...that still puts us out $30 million. And they have a much larger pocketbook. The way to beat them is to have a long-term plan, higher quality movies, and synergies. Note that $30 million is 2x Star Wars budget.

Why so focused on Warner Animation circa 1970's? If we want to get into the animation game, wouldn't it be better to start our own studio? What does Loony Toones specifically get us for the tune of (up to) $150 million?

DC comes with a functioning comic book company with lots of IP (that is highly merchandisable) and a currently in the works Superman movie. And we could use the comics to spread Star Wars, Indy, etc. Comics. Perhaps do the old school route and release comics based on movies when the movie releases as a form of advertisement we can profit from.

Edit:

Also: $60 million for THX? I get that it is a point of pride, but pride doesn't get us much as George is already at +10 relationship with Bruce. It'd be nice...but is it 4 new movies worth nice? Especially since we probably want to invest in Lucasfilm proper next turn.

Increase the Distribution Department, Marketing, Make a Studio, Increase ILM, Buy Land to Make the Studio. Maybe invest in computer graphics or a computer graphics company. $400 million seems like a huge warchest, but with Universal gunning for us it's not that huge. Especially when Lucasfilm has so much to spend on.

How dare you. Christopher Reeve's first Superman movie is literally in production, it's on sale! It's within our grasp! It was fantastic for it's time in terms of special effects, and we could make it better!

And @Magoose this last vote should have has a 24 hour moratorium minimumto encourage discussion, just like one with Lucasfilms (ifvinly for the amount of money that we are using)

It is too late now, everyone is bandwagoning for the first vote...

[X] DC Comics: The Heart of the Big Two of the comic industry of America, one of the pillars of Pulp… when they are solely focused on superheroes that is. It is just as much a part of mainstream American culture as everyone else. And among all the others, it has a catalog of some of the most famous superheroes in the world. And everyone is wanting a piece of it. (Minimum bid on the DC Comics must begin at 100 million. Gains the production of Superman, one of the last films Warner is making before it fully disbands. As well as their comics division)

[X]THX 1138: George has said that he wants his film back, and wants to give it the release it deserves. Also, you think he deserves a nice gift when he comes back from Vacation?

No one seems to want DC.

Y'all are doing my boy Brucey Wayne dirty.

Lol Plan Looney Lucas has a list of Classic movies that you want to buy on the cheap(1-15mil), but THX you want to buy for 60 million? Personally I would think those other movies would be valued more then THX.

Yeah all those other movies are worth far more than THX, but the thing is that THX is George's first movie and it was based off of his student film that pushed him into full time filmmaking. With American Graffiti, even if it's owned by Universal at the very least it was a definitive success and George and Bruce used those profits to found Lucasfilms and fund Star Wars. With THX, George never even got a chance to see the movie become a proper success because they terminated it a month in and he deserves to have the world see THX as a truly great film. THX is about getting one of Lucasfilms' two lost children back into the family and thus it's the second most important.

Plus I figured that with a plan called Looney Lucas that we should have some fun and go a little crazy, lol.

[X] Plan Get Em' Cheap if We Can...If Not Bleed Universal
[X] Plan Clean Sweep

We have the batman movie rights I think so the DC comics will provide a great synergy effect.
