Everyone, keep in mind this is a story.

And the person writing it had Sabrina just not even react to Riona's attempt. Riona's magic wasn't described as an instant action we couldn't react to.
It's called a surprise attack.

And I guess Firn wanted to see how the thread reacted before writing Sabrina's reaction to the attack, that's why we don't get to see it yet.

So... if this was no-powers AU, it looks like she did the equivalent of trying to shove past us to get out the door. Maybe shoving forcefully to leave us on our ass if we weren't metaphorically braced. Now, certainly shoving is not nice, and definitely rather rude, but shoving us in this case is probably not indicative that she shoves people all the time.
I'd liken it also to a social slap, but I know how this thread reacted last time a friend tried to slap Sabrina to make a point. :/

My problem ith letting her go is the backlash we'd get from our friends. I can't really see Sayaka being, well, apathetic about the Riona buisness, not to mention Mumi and Homu. I still think a timestop meeting is the way to may, and we can try and convince everyone to let her go.

If we can convince the others, then I'd be on board with coming back to deal with her once we have more of an orginazation, more partners, and actually can help her.
We can also let her be for now, and restrain her before her plane leaves tomorrow, throw some antimagic cuffs on her and throw her in meguca prison.

Leaving her be right now doesn't mean letting her go free to keep killing people.

At the very least, I'd demand Riona stays put in this room, and ask Homura or Sayaka to keep watch tonight.

Well shit. If Mura thinks I'm overreacting, I probably am.

But... even if we do release her, surely we can't just "let her go on her merry way"? At the very least we need to warn her away from doing more mind-whammy shit to anyone else in Mitakihara, right?

Mind-whammy shit? She just wanted us to let her go in peace. She feels really insecure in our privacy sphere, where she can't summon her shades and, she believe, she can't get out without our permission.

I feel like at this point letting her go is really the best course of action, since she's betting more unstable by the minute, and if she tries to actually Shade us she might not fail as hard as now.

Even if we let her go, it's not the end. Once we're a couple steps further ahead with our System Breaking we can pay her a visit in Edinburgh any time, or at least telepathy her up.

Well, sure, her NOT mind-controlling, shading, killing or otherwise hurting anyone in our territory, is definitely a minimum requirement for us letting her go.

Still think we can negotiate for something more than this, and we don't need to end the discussion right here.

Current thoughts I have -- I may formulate something more complete a bit later.
[] I noticed you trying to mind-control me. If you even attempt to do that again, against me or any of my friends and allies, it will be an all-out war between us. So please don't, okay. I still want us to talk this out, not fight it out.
[] You also thought that grief-controlling is impossible, why are you so sure that bringing your sister back is impossible? I am Sabrina TomoeVee, I do at least one new impossible thing every week.

  • [x] Fine. Release the isolation field.
[x] Tell Riona you regret that she wasn't able to find what she was searching for here.
[x] Given the circumstance, while it's regrettable, I agree it's best that you leave Mitakihara at your earliest convenience. Further I must insist that you don't create anymore shades in our city for any reason or I'm afraid conflict will be unavoidable. That said, wish her a good night.
[x] Leave with Mami. You're done here.
[x] When you're out a considerable range from Riona, contact Homura by phone for a timestop meeting. Update Homura and Mami of the situation. You weren't able to come to any agreement with Riona. Bring up Riona's intentions to leave in the morning and threat assessment. Avoid social bombs.

-[X] Tell Riona you regret that she wasn't able to find what she was searching for here.
    [X] Release the Field.
[X] Before letting her be, call her out and get concessions in exchange for her actions, without pissing her off too badly:
-[X] Priority: Arrange a new meeting before she leaves.
-[X] Priority: She does not attack nor use magic against anyone in Mitakihara.
-[X] She'll answer all our questions next meeting.
    [X] Go. Once you're away:
    -[X] Timestop meeting.
-[X] Explain everything. Avoid social bombs. Don't take sides, be impartial.
[X] Let her go, on the stipulation that she not harm anyone in Mitakihara
    [X] Kill her
[X] Promise agree to end the meeting. Because you're sick of it, not because she's asking.
    [X] But first:
-[X] Call her out. On everything. Trying to use magic on you, threatening you, baiting you, everything.
    --[X] Use this.
-[X] Get her to agree to concessions, as many as you can get without pissing her off too badly:
--[X] Priority: Arrange another meeting before she leaves (morning?).
--[X] She'll stay confined within a location of her choosing for the duration of her stay.
--[X] She'll answer questions, now or at that later meeting, about:
    ---[X] Our Soul.
    ---[X] Clear Seeds.
    ---[X] Wish Rejection.
    ---[X] The Feather.
---[X] How the fuck is her name spelled.
[X] Once Riona agrees to everything you can get her to, warn her to not try that again and dismiss the Privacy Field.
-[X] Let Mami know before you dismiss the Field.
-[X] Watch out in case she tries to pull something.
[X] Get out. Timestop meeting. Mami hugs.
-[X] Get Sayaka, Oriko and Kirika. This is important.
-[X] Ask Kirika to make Anti Magic Enchantments for our group's use while you talk.
-[X] Explain everything that can be explained about what just happened.
-[X] Don't take a side. Be as impartial as possible, and do not support any course of action over another.
    [X] gem her
[X] Try that shit again on anyone in your territory, or hurt anyone in Mitakihara, and her life is forfeit.
[X] You'll let her go, but she's crossed a lot of lines—showing up in your territory without warning, permission, or excuse, trying to mind control you without provocation, making demands in exchange for nothing—so you'll be taking something in exchange. Your teammate is going to copy her power before she leaves this privacy sphere. It won't harm her or her power in any way, nor can it be used to track or monitor her. But you'll be getting SOMETHING out of all the trouble she's caused you.

It's called surprise.
This is not surprise:

She raises a hand and twists it, and you feel the magic surging, but- nothing. Rionna's scowl deepens. Outside your interdiction bubble, Mami stiffens ever so slightly, alert and tense.

"Now," Rionna says. Power, magic infuses her voice, infusing it with odd harmonics that sing and push against you, against your Soul. "Let me go."

And the magic-

Simply slides right off you, rainwater sleeting off an umbrella.

Rionna glares at you, expression tight and... annoyed. Not angry. Not scared. Annoyance.

Riona tried to use magic, failed, Sabrina observed this, then Riona tried something else, yet Sabrina, who's super on edge right now, let it happen. Sabrina is an alert magical girl, too.

This does not read like surprise at all.

I would not actually want to let her leave Mitakihara free...

It's true Riona's cornered, she's been since we got into the Sphere. She even showed apprehension then.

This is just her showing how the Sphere affects her, emotionally. And yes, I agree she believes she can't leave without permission.

We can't even let her go, since we're currently inside of her room and she needs to wait until tomorrow for her flight home anyway.. She should really make sure to word her mindsoul-whammy orders better in the future.

Well, in your defense, nothing in the update indicates that Riona can really be reasoned with. Actually the opposite. And the little author's note right afterwards isn't exactly encouraging either. But that's just my opinion.

I'm on the side that wants a time-stop emergency meeting. I'm in favour of letting her go for now and dealing with her when our more pressing concerns are dealt with, but only if this doesn't bring us into moral conflict with our friends. Hence, time-stop and emergency meeting, so we can all decide together where to go from here. Seems the most sensible route, but I'm open to being convinced of otherwise.

Again, the lack of reaction is surprise and Firn not wanting to write Sabrina's reaction before seeing the thread. Or do you really believe Sabrina would have stayed put while she was being potentially shaded by Riona?

I guess it depends on whether we're more concerned with solving her problems/redeeming her and getting her help, or if we want to put her in Meguca prison. The slammer will be more simple, and it really does seem like she deserves it, but we do want to help everyone, regardless of how unpleasent they are. On the flip side, if we let her go then there's a fair chance we can redeem her at some unforseen later date, when we have Megucas who can let us help Rionna with her problems.

Personally, I'd fo for a timestop meeting to figure out which to do. Imprison her with anti-magic cuffs, preventing her from commiting anymore evils but leaving her problems unsolved and ensuring she'll be our enemy for a long, long time? Or let her go until we have the means to help her, hopefully redeeming her but allowing her to run free until that point?

At the very least, this conversation is done.

If there was any danger of Sabrina getting mind controlled or shaded, I would believe Firn would have have her react, or let us react before Riona actually could try to use magic twice.

The fact her didn't, tells me there was no need, no actual danger from Riona's actions. That Sabrina didn't try to defend herself because it was unnecessary. That Sabrina stayed put because there wasn't actually a potential danger of being shaded, or even mind controlled.

It's an Doylist reading of the scene, not Watsonian.

Can we *very please* not name specific people she might be interested in killing, and thus draw her attention to them? It's not as if we'll punish her any less if she kills Tomoe or Homura or Madoka or any other of our friends! Why in the worlds would we just put a target on Sayaka like that?

If she doesn't mind ripping people's Souls out, screaming and kicking, I don't think we can make her feel guilty about comparably petty things like this.
It's more about it being social ammunition. 'Use this'.

She did all this shit, so now she needs to pay up in concessions.

She arrived into our territory unnanounced and without permission, so no she doesn't get to gallivate around.

She tried to use magic on us, so even better, she doesn't get to leave the room because she's proved herself too dangerous for even that.

She's threatened us and baited us and generally being a huge patience sink, so she's gonna pay us for that by answering our questions.

Etc.

Breaking the prophecy. Removing her potential motive for targeting Sayaka by ensuring she knows Sayaka is one of ours and she won't be able to get our power by targeting her.

Breaking the prophecy. Removing her potential motive for targeting Sayaka.

This sounds more like a self-fulfilling prophecy, where she didn't even know about Sayaka before, and we just gave her the reason to kill her, even describing her and her powers! I mean Sayaka would be "why the fuck did you just describe me to the murderer that will want to kill me for my powers, while also telling her how delicious my powers are!"
