Well-said. It is very frustrating that on the one hand the thread consistently votes to add to our to-do list but on the other consistelty doesn't vote to do the things on the list. One year of research sabbatical wouldn't be bad at all; we don't even need Max and Johann for it, really, if it turns out hiring them is too hard.

What do you mean by "votes to add"?

The vast majority of items simply appear in the list because BoneyM had the idea or maybe someone in the thread mentioned it and BoneyM thought it was worth adding. It does not constitute an obligation on the part of the quest to pursue those items. The only things I can think of in recent times we actually voluntarily voted to add to the list are the artifacts and papers we bought in Chaos Vegas, and before that spirit binding. From the regular Turn, my comments in underline:

Research and Publishing:
[ ] Study an artefact: select which.
Artifacts on list:
Ranald's Coin (note from Ranald: don't) - Don't!
Vampire skulls - No need to ever study these.
Branulhune - investigate the odd flash when it is desummoned underwater - No need to ever study this.
Added now: Golden Arm, Acorn, Explorer Papers, This the thread actually voted to add.

[ ] Write a paper: select which. - We write papers regularly.
[ ] Investigate the possibility of using one Wind to directly manipulate another. - A bunch of people in the thread are excited about this, but nobody voted to add it to the list. Maybe it'll win a vote someday, maybe it won't.
[ ] The Second Secret of Dhar teaches how to collapse it upon itself. Practice upon local Dhar taint, and very cautiously see if this works with Warpstone. - Most voters don't seem to want to do this.
[ ] Try to establish a relationship with the Cult of Verena, with the intent of offering them access to your rarer tomes in exchange for copies of some of their own. - Could be obsoleted by a book boon.

Aethyric Vitae (13 gallons): - We already figured out how to turn it into Dwarf Favor. We don't have any need or obligation to study it any more than that if there are actions the quest would rather do.
[ ] Experiment with integrating the Vitae into enchantments.
[ ] Investigate how the Vitae reacts with Divine Magic.
[ ] Investigate how the Vitae reacts to a power stone.
[ ] Using the secrets you already know of the Vitae, attempt to weaponize it.

Enchantment and Spell Creation:
[ ] Enchant an item with a Fiendishly Complex or easier spell (specify what and which) - Made robes very recently.
[ ] Attempt to enchant an object to translate Windsight into a visual image. - A bunch of people in the thread are excited about this, but nobody voted to add it to the list. Maybe it'll win a vote someday, maybe it won't.
[ ] Attempt to deepen your skill with Enchantment (will be more difficult than studying it at the Grey College) - Benefits are so vague and nebulous, it hasn't garnered much interest.
[ ] Attempt to complete your 'Fog Path' spell (NEW-ish) - We did it!
[ ] Attempt to create a spell (see Approved Spells threadmark)
[ ] Attempt to capture an Apparition (optional: specify which) - Thread voted to pursue this path by buying the secrets of Golden Hounds.
[ ] Turn a staff from mundane materials. - We already have a kick-ass staff.
[ ] Turn a staff from the horn of a Storm Dragon. - We already have a kick-ass staff.

In summary, items that the thread voted to the list in some fashion:
  • Doing something with Acorn (note this could be handing off to someone else)
  • Doing something with Golden Arm (note this could be handing off to someone else)
  • Doing something with Explorer Papers (note this could be handing off to someone else)
  • Capturing an Apparition

Items the thread never voted to add to the list:
  • Everything else

EDIT: And I have to say, the supposedly huge research backlog does not actually look so huge. Really it amounts to:
1. Study Aethyric Vitae some more
2. Try to do Uglu tongs
3. Do an enchantment project of some sort.
4. Study an artifact
5. Spell creation of some sort

No, that's what I'm referring to. I argued against the "go fishing for loot" sidequest actions extensively when we were crossing the Zorn Uzkul, you may recall. Obviously, I lost that argument.

Still really glad we rolled Money on the combe and not one of the options that might have required AP to get use out of, though BOOK would have been nice.

Don't forget that Panoramia has a lot of free time in the winter months and can also visit Mathilde.

Ahem:
  • Swamp Town would probably result in Mathilde being gone for literally years, which is really rough.
  • High Priest in Kislev is a long, long way away. Without being able to draw on the dwaven gyrocopter network any longer*, visits to a K8P might end up being a once a year affair as it takes weeks even with Shadow Steed. Still pretty rough.
  • Stirland, Wissenland, and Tutoring... a strain definitely, though frequent letters, and a few long vacations a year could help, and Panoramia might consider coming to live with Mathilde during the winter months when she has downtime at K8P.
  • Border Princess would be very close and not much of a problem at all.
  • Loremaster-at-large, Ambassador-at-large, Waystones, etc. - Mathilde probably still uses K8P as her home base, though she's away a lot. Almost no issue.

I don't really think that's practical with Swamp Town, which is months of travel away, and I think it would be a bit of a stretch for Kislev, because we would be talking about maybe ~6 weeks for her to go back-and-forth just once, and that's a lot of the year to give up on travel. For the others it's more practical.

I'd argue there are enough material for a book, youll just have to list all his titles each time the first time you refer to him :V
Clarification: King Setep was the single Nehekharan comprising the 5th Dynasty. He is known for the Blade of Setep and having his face on coins and not much else, which is why he's a paper in this context, not a book.

You are probably thinking of Settra the Imperishable, Great King, Khemrikhara, The Great King of Nehekhara, King of Kings, Opener of the Way, Wielder of the Divine Flame, Punisher of Nomads, The Great unifier, Commander of the Golden Legion, Sacred of Appearance, Bringer of Light, Father of Hawks, Builder of Cities, Protector of the Two Worlds, Keeper of the Hours, Chosen of Ptra, High Steward of the Horizon, Sailor of the Great Vitae, Sentinel of the Two Realms, The Undisputed, Begetter of the Begat, Scourge of the Faithless, Carrrion-feeder, First of the Charnel Valley, Rider of the Sacred Chariot, Vanquisher of Vermin, Champion of the Death Arena, Mighty Lion of the Infinite Desert, Holy Emperor of the Shifting Sands, He Who Holds the Sceptre, Great Hawk of the Heavens, Arch-Sultan of Atalan, Waker of the Hierotitan, Monarch of the Sky, Majestic Emperor of the Shifting Sands, Champion of the Desert Gods, Breaker of the Ogre Clans, Builder of the Great Pyramid, Terror of the Living, Master of the Never-Ending Horizon, Master of the Necropolises, Taker of Souls, Tyrant to the Foolish, Bearer of Ptra's Holy Blade, Scion of Usirian, Sicon of Nehek, The Great, Chaser of Nightmares, Keeper of the Royal Herat, Founder of the Mortuary Cult, Banisher of the Grand Hierophant, High Lord Admiral of the Deathfleets, Guardian of the Charnal Pass, Tamer of the Liche King, Unliving Jackal Lord, Dismisser of the Warrior Queen, Charioteer of the Gods, He Who Does Not Serve, Slayer of Redditras, Scarab Purger, Favoured of Usirian, Player of the Great Game, Liberator of Life, Lord Sand, Wrangler of Scorpions, Emperor of the Dunes, Eternal Sovereign of the Khemri's Legions, Seneschal of the Great Sandy Desert, Curserer of the Living, Regent of the Eastern Mountains, Warden of the eternal Necropolis, Herald of the all Heralds, Caller of the Bitter Wind, God-Tamer, Master of the Mortis River, Guardian of the Dead, Great Keeper of the Obelisks, Deacon of the Ash River, Belated of Walkers, General of the Mighty Frame, Summoner of Sandstorms, Master of all Necrotects, Prince of Dust, Tyrant of Araby, Purger of the Greenskin Breathers, Killer of the False God's Champions, Tyrant of the Gold Dunes, Golden Bone Lord, Avenger of the Dead, Carrion Master, Eternal Warden of Nehek's Lands, Breaker of Djaf's Bonds as being enough for a book rather than a paper if you list all his titles.

While that is true, Settra the Imperishable, Great King, Khemrikhara, The Great King of Nehekhara, King of Kings, Opener of the Way, Wielder of the Divine Flame, Punisher of Nomads, The Great unifier, Commander of the Golden Legion, Sacred of Appearance, Bringer of Light, Father of Hawks, Builder of Cities, Protector of the Two Worlds, Keeper of the Hours, Chosen of Ptra, High Steward of the Horizon, Sailor of the Great Vitae, Sentinel of the Two Realms, The Undisputed, Begetter of the Begat, Scourge of the Faithless, Carrrion-feeder, First of the Charnel Valley, Rider of the Sacred Chariot, Vanquisher of Vermin, Champion of the Death Arena, Mighty Lion of the Infinite Desert, Holy Emperor of the Shifting Sands, He Who Holds the Sceptre, Great Hawk of the Heavens, Arch-Sultan of Atalan, Waker of the Hierotitan, Monarch of the Sky, Majestic Emperor of the Shifting Sands, Champion of the Desert Gods, Breaker of the Ogre Clans, Builder of the Great Pyramid, Terror of the Living, Master of the Never-Ending Horizon, Master of the Necropolises, Taker of Souls, Tyrant to the Foolish, Bearer of Ptra's Holy Blade, Scion of Usirian, Sicon of Nehek, The Great, Chaser of Nightmares, Keeper of the Royal Herat, Founder of the Mortuary Cult, Banisher of the Grand Hierophant, High Lord Admiral of the Deathfleets, Guardian of the Charnal Pass, Tamer of the Liche King, Unliving Jackal Lord, Dismisser of the Warrior Queen, Charioteer of the Gods, He Who Does Not Serve, Slayer of Redditras, Scarab Purger, Favoured of Usirian, Player of the Great Game, Liberator of Life, Lord Sand, Wrangler of Scorpions, Emperor of the Dunes, Eternal Sovereign of the Khemri's Legions, Seneschal of the Great Sandy Desert, Curserer of the Living, Regent of the Eastern Mountains, Warden of the eternal Necropolis, Herald of the all Heralds, Caller of the Bitter Wind, God-Tamer, Master of the Mortis River, Guardian of the Dead, Great Keeper of the Obelisks, Deacon of the Ash River, Belated of Walkers, General of the Mighty Frame, Summoner of Sandstorms, Master of all Necrotects, Prince of Dust, Tyrant of Araby, Purger of the Greenskin Breathers, Killer of the False God's Champions, Tyrant of the Gold Dunes, Golden Bone Lord, Avenger of the Dead, Carrion Master, Eternal Warden of Nehek's Lands, Breaker of Djaf's Bonds was a king of the 1st dynasty of Nehekhara, having united it and founded the kingdom in the first place, not the fifth. A book on the First Dynasty of Nehekhara would have a good deal of material before you even bring in all the titles of Settra the Imperishable, Great King, Khemrikhara, The Great King of Nehekhara, King of Kings, Opener of the Way, Wielder of the Divine Flame, Punisher of Nomads, The Great unifier, Commander of the Golden Legion, Sacred of Appearance, Bringer of Light, Father of Hawks, Builder of Cities, Protector of the Two Worlds, Keeper of the Hours, Chosen of Ptra, High Steward of the Horizon, Sailor of the Great Vitae, Sentinel of the Two Realms, The Undisputed, Begetter of the Begat, Scourge of the Faithless, Carrrion-feeder, First of the Charnel Valley, Rider of the Sacred Chariot, Vanquisher of Vermin, Champion of the Death Arena, Mighty Lion of the Infinite Desert, Holy Emperor of the Shifting Sands, He Who Holds the Sceptre, Great Hawk of the Heavens, Arch-Sultan of Atalan, Waker of the Hierotitan, Monarch of the Sky, Majestic Emperor of the Shifting Sands, Champion of the Desert Gods, Breaker of the Ogre Clans, Builder of the Great Pyramid, Terror of the Living, Master of the Never-Ending Horizon, Master of the Necropolises, Taker of Souls, Tyrant to the Foolish, Bearer of Ptra's Holy Blade, Scion of Usirian, Sicon of Nehek, The Great, Chaser of Nightmares, Keeper of the Royal Herat, Founder of the Mortuary Cult, Banisher of the Grand Hierophant, High Lord Admiral of the Deathfleets, Guardian of the Charnal Pass, Tamer of the Liche King, Unliving Jackal Lord, Dismisser of the Warrior Queen, Charioteer of the Gods, He Who Does Not Serve, Slayer of Redditras, Scarab Purger, Favoured of Usirian, Player of the Great Game, Liberator of Life, Lord Sand, Wrangler of Scorpions, Emperor of the Dunes, Eternal Sovereign of the Khemri's Legions, Seneschal of the Great Sandy Desert, Curserer of the Living, Regent of the Eastern Mountains, Warden of the eternal Necropolis, Herald of the all Heralds, Caller of the Bitter Wind, God-Tamer, Master of the Mortis River, Guardian of the Dead, Great Keeper of the Obelisks, Deacon of the Ash River, Belated of Walkers, General of the Mighty Frame, Summoner of Sandstorms, Master of all Necrotects, Prince of Dust, Tyrant of Araby, Purger of the Greenskin Breathers, Killer of the False God's Champions, Tyrant of the Gold Dunes, Golden Bone Lord, Avenger of the Dead, Carrion Master, Eternal Warden of Nehek's Lands, Breaker of Djaf's Bonds.

Damnit, that ruins my joke. I was kind of certain he was the one man dynasty.

Changing up my vote.

[X] The Waystone Project
[X] Loremaster-at-Large of Karak Eight Peaks

These are still the things I'm most interested in, but

[X] Spymaster of Wissenland

Mixing in this now, because thread arguments about the strategic importance of Nuln have me convinced that it should at least make the "take a look at this" list, and I am willing to be swayed to actually support it over a dwarf job if the short-term need of "stop the skaven" is dire enough.

You're missing the Kul Encampment loot, which would be the Kul weapons and the shrine to Mannslieb. I believe @picklepikkl's point was that the majority of our research items come from loot, and we consistently choose to loot more things.

Yeah, on the other hand though, while I have no intrinsic objection to spending 6-12 months just knocking out a bunch of research and sort of 'wiping the slate clean' for the next job. I do think there's a bit too much urgency or obligation often implicitly assumed when people talk about the 'backlog'. If something doesn't get done for 10 years, or even if it never gets done, it's not generally the end of the world. We haven't written a contract in blood saying we'll investigate all these things. Maybe it turns out that functionally Mathilde spent 2,000 gold she'll never see a return from. That would be a pity sure, but it's not intolerable.

Basically a vote to have things doesn't necessarily come at a cost of a commitment to utilize those things.

This might come off as a foolish question, but in the interests of clarity, why do people want to clear the backlog we have? Is it frustration with the idea of having stuff unchecked in principle? Are there specific items people are interested in examining for a particular reason?

I want to find out the identity of our predecessor spymaster in Stirland. That's in the backlog, right? :V

A combination of both I gather. Almost every option has its fan even if they are not majority yet.

I think it is worth keeping in mind we are not the only Grey LM in the empire. If Nuln is about to fall into a giant pit of rats or something someone who is not us will act. Personally I just don't feel like retreading he whole Skaven arc out of abstract attachment to a place we have never seen on screen in the quest.
