Normally I generally agree with your plans, but this time I really disagree with a lot of pieces here:

Windherding: Last time Mathilde tried Windherding, she gained an Arcane Mark. And that was with a rather simple enchantment idea! I don't want to do Windherding again without the Gambler to try to counteract bad luck, and certainly hnt for something so much more difficult and complicated when we haven't even succeeded at W8idherding action yet!

Damsels: X Can't Give It To Us. Not anymore. We're too close to reaching the major milestone in the waystone project of making our first working prototype.

Eike on Sounds: I won't repeat myself, so to keep it short, I strongly object to making Eike put her nose to the spell study grindstone for the third turn in a row. Let's have her do some Grey training instead of constant Spell training.

No Liminal Realm: I don't want to delay our progress on finally finishing up AV. Now's a really good time to use the Gambler on the Liminal Realm action so we can finally finally finish out the AV action/research tree next turn with the Morbs.

I agree with most of this.

I also specifically don't want to just shove Eike at Sounds again until she's had the opportunity to properly work on the block that was giving her trouble. While just going "HANDLE IT" sounds like a great way to get her a shiny new Arcane Mark that eats her voice I don't... Want to do that.

This is more like it and I'm gonna to throw it an approval. Couple suggestions I have no idea if they're workable: Kislev is said to be hard to get into for traders and a Father turn would be the perfect oppurtunity to get in through the cult of Kalita, though since it's competing with two other popular EIC actions idk if it's worth going full throttle. Eike on four actions feels like a lot, maybe remove the negotiations? Finally Brettonia is noted to not have many BOOK worth pursuing so I don't know how valuable that KAU action is, especially considering that whatever libraries are there might be full of worshippers of gods other than the Lady.
Fair points. I also find it unfortunate that I couldn't fit in Kalita trade, but other things are just more urgent right now. Its not like this is the only chance to use The Father though, we still have the ability to do it on a later turn.
What are peoples preferences on EIC infiltration vs Fog Bridge?

-[ ] Attempt to bring a non-Order magical tradition into the Waystone Project (Betonnian Damsels)

I mean, I don't care for the apparations thing myself. But I can see where some research in the mean time might work-though I'd prefer to focus on orbs and waystones.

.
I was previously thinking about the elfcation this turn, but the prospect of stacking up a huge amount of cash first (Plus having the apparition done) makes it seem like it would be best to delay.
I would like to have more spending money and the Apparition done, sure. However, this turn provides a good enough opportunity for the Elfcation that I'm willing to forgo them. The perfect is the enemy of the good, and all that jazz.
Big same. The offer stands up until the end of the world, there is literally no hurry and I'm irked by how people seem willing to drop our nearly-done research and go on a big adventure so quickly and suddenly.
To what are you referring in regards to "nearly-done research"? AV can, and indeed should be delayed until our Tower is fully operational again, and we can fit the Waystone Research in with the Elfcation. The rest of our research is closer to "barely begun" or "around half done" in my mind than "nearly-done".

As for why I am so gung ho about going on the trip now, we will always have research or other responsibilities we can be doing instead. It's part and parcel of being a Grey Magister. If we wait until research doesn't get in the way at all, we might as well pencil the Elfcation in for the 17th of "Never gonna happen". 😁

Turn 42 is rare in that we can fairly easily pencil in a 2AP action with a 1AP follow up, or even just a 3AP action in its entirety. We can (and perhaps should) get away with only one Waystone Action, and our ability to do dangerous research has been curtailed by damage to our Tower. Between this turn and the next we will have 6 non-Waystone AP. For reference, Turn 44 is likely to have 5, since I suspect we'll be back to doing 3 AP on the Waystones.

It is, if not "now or never", at least "now or not for a good long while". I don't see Turn 44 as being a good choice for Elfcation. Sure, we'll have the Overwork AP, but that doesn't mean there will be less of a crunch. If anything I'd say that Turn 44 will have far worse levels of AP hell than this turn. Having a completed Waystone will unlock a whole lot of new and very hard to refuse actions. Given a choice between going on vacation or helping to permanently cleanse one or more particularly blighted regions of the Empire*, I suspect that the thread will choose the latter. Can't say I'd blame them.

Plus, there's no guarantee that time isn't a factor with regards to the Elfcation. We're about to do something which will anger a whole lot of Asur. A supposedly inferior race doing something believed to be impossible will tend to do that. That is likely to interfere with our trip, and possibly make it impossible altogether. Sure, it's possible that it won't be affected at all, but it's still a risk worth taking note of imo.

*If we don't succeed on our first try, replace with recruiting the necessary personnel and doing the research needed to fix whatever problems arose.

I'm about to go to sleep, but to address some of the feedback I've gotten:

- I'm happy to switch out Eike's action and take her off of the Sound grindstone.

- I'd be willing to delay bringing the Damsels in on this a bit to get more use out of the Father side of the coin, but I do want to bring them in - the more we can fuck over Chaos and Vampires, the happier I'll be, and I don't doubt that Bretonnia can contribute when it comes time to actually assemble all the pieces of the puzzle and make them play nice.

- I'm committed to doing the Speculum now that Boney approved the idea. We did already do some Windherding with Egrimm successfully off-screen when we did our College Prototype, so it's not like we're going into this totally raw.

- I really think Whispering Darkness is the way to go when it comes to Apparitions. It's literally an apparition that lives in shadows, becomes a dark fog, and fucks over Dhar users. That's an enormous pile of potential synergies with Mathilde's skillset - Shadow Arcane Mark, Fog Arcane Mark, Warrior of Fog, Staff of Mistery, Dhar Insight. The things we can do with this beastie are gonna be fuckin' legendary.

- I don't really want to delay the Nordland action, since I think that the one-two punch of the bridge and Nordland infiltration is probably our best bet when it comes to shoring up the political side of the Waystone project. Plus it gives us a good opportunity to train Eike in some critical Grey Wizard skills.

The 'Stirland Repeater' has finally entered production, and Stirland's army will be phasing out the handgun in favour of an elite core armed with repeaters and the bulk of the ranged forces armed with crossbows. The Mk 2 boasts a smoother firing mechanism and a reduced chance of powder magazine detonation. The Mk 3 incorporates a redesigned breech that reduces the chance of misfire and imparts more impetus onto the projectile, allowing for more killing power and a flatter trajectory.
Haven't seen anyone comment on this, but it seems the skavenhaul *has* in fact been good for our friends with the firearm factory :V

Edit: Ehh, i'm already up past my bedtime from nap betrayal, so i'll take the time to save and link my diffcheckers now:

Edit: Since this, boney made some minor updates to the turn choices:
-Fixed AV amount 19 -> 20 gallons
-Apparition capturing back to needing specification on turn vote rather than a subvote afterwards
-druuchi diplo option added:
--[ ] Enter into negotiations with the Druchii delegation to Laurelorn
---The Druchii have proffered magical knowledge and advance information on Karond Kar corsair movements in exchange for information on and samples of interesting creatures and phenomena of the Old World, but all kinds of other deals could be negotiated.
-Eike intrigue math fixed (12+2 = 14, not 12+2 = 13)

@LawsOfRobotics "Bring a good pair of running shoes" predates some of the revelations and discussion, so I've adapted it a bit. Most notably the Egrimm discussion around using the Serenity action, which left one WEB_MAT action spare.

[ ] Plan Bring several good pairs of running shoes
-[ ] JOHANN: Hunt an apparition (Rider in Red)
--[ ] COIN: The Gambler
-[ ] MAX: Study an artefact (Lustrian Rubbings)
-[ ] Waystones: Mapping (Tilea, Estalia) with Web-Mat (Max, Johann, Egrimm)

-[ ] Waystone: Foundation (Thorek, Hatalath, Sarvoi, Niedzwenka, Egrimm, Elrisse, Tochter)
-[ ] Tributary: International (Kislev) (Zlata, Niedzwenka, Aksel, Cadaeth)

-[ ] Attempt to create a liminal realm

-[ ] EIC: Insert agents into a particular province, cult, company, or institution to start gathering their secrets. (Nordland)
-[ ] KAU: Begin copying the full corpus of a Partner Library (Grand University of Nuln)

-[ ] SERENITY: Write a paper: Windfall Observations, with Egrimm as Primary Author

-[ ] Eike Actions: Lustrian Rubbings study, Windfall paper, EIC action
-[ ] Eike Study: Intrigue (Tradecraft with Hochlander)

Notes:

I've spent the spare action on mapping, hence the extra running shoes, but otherwise this cleaves generally close to that proposition. IIRC, I think the web-mat arrangement of actions here checks out?
I could have switched it to the windherder action instead, but basic version first. "Bring a good pair of running shoes... and a mirror" can come later.

Silly as it was the Orc! incident brought me around to Red Riders. Regular version as well as hilarious, though if it comes to choosing between them I'll probably flip a coin.
I'm putting actions on mapping since there's always a chance of finding a problem, the Health and vulnerability of Estalia in particular has been of significant interest to characters in quest (including the Emperor) and information as to the health or disrepair of the network there could be capitalized upon.
Somewhat torn on Tributary location. I could see one in Middenheim just as much as one in Kislev. The former for political benefits, the latter for metaphysical benefits. In the end, I stuck with the one that was there to begin with.
I did switch up Eike's since the idea for her Red Teaming the EIC for training was discounted.

C'mon guys, don't you want to send Eike on an adventure? Wilhelmina probably told her all about Mathilde's adventures in Stirland, this her chance to be just like her idol!

I'm going to be honest, I really, really dislike the whole red rider/nazgul thing.

I can't explain why I dislike it so much, but I just feel that the other apparitions are much better candidates for Mathilde's style.

I can answer that one for me, at least!

It tastes like Smoke Knights. >.>

("But Miss Snake," you say, "You weren't around when that was happening, were you? You only started talking in the past turn or two!" To which I say that that is true, but that was in the part of the thread that I got through before I stopped trying to read every post and started going through the threadmarks.)

Yeah, besides, this is Warhammer not Warhammer 40K, no copying off Greg Sargent. :V

Indeed. If we need a sergeant we can get our own.

its absolutely fair to have a preference.

but i have no idea how you can say its not Mathys style.

she is the bloody Twilight rider, riding around on a shadow horse, with a big sword is the thing she is most known for.

riding at the head of a group of shadow horseman with big ass swords could not be more her style if she tried.

Mathilde has fought on horseback exactly twice in quest, both times in the early stages of Belegar's expedition. Additionally, Mathilde has never fought alongside other knights, or participated in a knightly charge. How can it be her style when she's never done it?

Additionally, I worry that a pocket knight—horse and all—will see very little action, unlike a fog that twists and manipulates perception—a fog that decieves—which I feel could be more useful in a broader array of settings and scenarios.

This is what I would want out of a non-Father Plan, so I'd approval vote for it.

Question: what are people seeing as the pros/cons of infiltrating Nordland rather than Middenland or the cult of Ulric?

Red Riders seems way better to fight the Druchii in Nagarythe though. That sort of hellish skirmish zone is ideal to have a few surprise knight charges in your back pocket, at least to me. It seems much better to rely on pure stopping power than a "decieving mist" when we are fighting millennia old warriors and potential female sorceress which much more magical experience.

Here are my proposed plans for the turn:

[ ] Plan Bring Running Shoes
-[ ] JOHANN: Hunt an apparition (Rider in Red)
-[ ] EGRIMM: Attempt a Windherder enchantment with Egrimm (Cloak of Flashy Escapes, Shadowcloak/Dazzling Brightness)

-[ ] COIN: The Gambler (Hunt an apparition)
-[ ] Eike Actions: Lustrian books and rubbings study, Windfall paper, Windherder enchanting, EIC negotiation
-[ ] Eike Study: Enchanting class at the Grey College (1 CF)

[ ] Plan Bring Running Shoes and Ranald
-[ ] JOHANN: Hunt an apparition (Rider in Red)
-[ ] EGRIMM: Attempt a Windherder enchantment with Egrimm (Cloak of Flashy Escapes, Shadowcloak/Dazzling Brightness)
-[ ] MAX: Study an artefact (Books and rubbings from an Asur explorer of Lustria and the Southlands)

Here are the explanations for my choices, spoilered to avoid wall-o-text:
There has been some discussion in the thread about what action to put The Gambler on. I personally feel that it contributes the most to the Apparition Hunting action, while others feel that it is more valuable on the creation of a Liminal Realm. My preference is mild enough that I can support either option, so I have created a plan for each. For reference I will attempt to summarize my undertanding of the arguments for each position:
For The Gambler on Appartion Hunting:
  • I expect there to be multiple good opportunities for The Gambler to activate. There will be research to learn how to contain it, there will be investigation to track one down, and there will be risk in actually confronting and capturing it.
  • If we do well on a plan to capture and contain an appartion, we will likely have less time pressure to follow up on the action, and bind the appartion.
For The Gambler on Creating a Liminal Realm:
  • We don't want to get a daemon again.
  • Ranald might be able to help because he could be watching from the Aethyr side.
  • If the Liminal Realms action fails again we might not get a third chance.
Let me know if there are arguments I should add for either side. While I prefer putting the coin on Appartion Hunting, I made two plans so the thread can decide.
There are several reasons why I feel we should do Apparition Hunting. The first is simply that I think it is interesting, and a good counterpoint to our visiting the Gold College last turn. We have seen what was made of the artifacts that we used to purchase the knowledge and now it feels fitting that we finally get around to using the secret we purchased. Also I feel that it is the best next major self-improvement action that we can embark on now that we have finished Branarhune.

The short version is that it is the Apparition that most clearly fills a combat niche we want filled (tanky backup on demand) and I have not seen a detailed plan for how to turn a different apparition into a similarly capable weapon. It also fits our theme pretty well. We could instead use Dark Hounds if we don't mind being obvious about copying the Golds, but I have not seen much support for that. I have made several attempts to explore ideas for other apparitions and been unsuccessful in my opinion. This is best summarized by one of my previous posts:
The clearly most popular option is a Rider in Red, because it gives a big tough fighter, where if we get in a tough spot facing several enemies and need some breathing room, or want to do a cavalry charge with RoW, then we just go "I choose you Dämmerlichtreiter!". It also works thematically with Mathy's spells and style. We are an ulgu wielding knight who likes to use a great sword, so we could make it look like a Nazgul and it would match with our style. We can probably incorporate mist into the spell to make it easier to use because of our staff (there is a somewhat Boney post about this somewhere, I think in response to Alratan), and if we make a shadow sword spell, there might be overlap with enhancing the sword the apparition wields. It fills a nice niche in our combat abilities that our current spells and equipment don't and it matches our image, so it is clear why it is popular.

For the other apparitions no one has articulated a clear plan as to how to weaponize them. I have tried to come up with ideas in the past. I recently proposed a plan for the Black Essense, but it was shot down by Boney, with follow up discussion here.

So I am very open to ideas for how to weaponize Apparitions other than the Rider in Red, but there aren't any clearly communicated ideas for how to use Handmaidens, or the Whispering Darkness, or the Black Essence as anything other than basic assassins, when we are already a very good assassin.
My best answer for this is:
  • It sounds fun
  • Max is a patient nerd who seems like he would be good at this
  • We just bought a bunch of books to be better at this
  • Some people seem to think it might have results that help with Waystones. I will let others make this argument
I would like to try Windherding again, because we didn't realize the full potential of it on our last attempt due to the poor roll. The trickiest part is what we could make that is worth the effort and risks. I came up with the idea for the Cloak of Flashy Escapes many turns ago, but the idea feels more relevant than ever.

The core idea for the Cloak of Flashy Escapes (name suggestions welcome) is a riding cloak that combines Shadowcloak and Dazzling Brightness. It is intended as a useful escape/utility item for Eike that is reasonable for us to use as Windherding practice because it combines 2 Relatively Simple spells. There would be one quick incantation to activate both the dazzle and Shadowcloak, so that the wearer can flashbang pursuers and then easily hide. There would be separate incantations to activate just Shadowcloak for hiding, or activate just Dazzling Brightness for the flashbang. It feels like a good tool for helping keep Eike safe, without giving her OP magic items, and it fits with the Shadow Rider theme that we would apply to a Rider in Red. It would also be a good action for Eike to participate in, because she would be learning the basics of Enchanting at the college, then seeing our attempts at breaking new ground in the field. It might also be a good chance for her to improve her windsight and start learning the Windherding skill.

The Cloak of Flashy Escapes was confirmed to be a viable Windherding item by Boney here.
This is one of the last 2 AV actions we have left. I would like to get it done this turn so that we can create the Orbs and write the AV Book together next turn. We cannot safely create the Orbs because the Room of Calamity is currently out of action, but it has been confirmed that it is reasonably safe to try and create a Liminal Realm somewhere else:
Boney, I know the followup liminal realm action may not yet have a final form in your notes and so you might not want to commit to an answer at this point, but just in case: would Mathilde want the Room of Calamity for that action?
That would be her first choice, but now that she has something of an idea about what might happen and what can go wrong, she'd consider doing it somewhere far from friendly population centres while wearing good running shoes to be a good set of safety measures too.
This is the source of the plan name.
Examining the Foundation feels fairly obvious, as the last major piece of the Waystones left to examine.

As for Kislev tributaries they feel like they are a good counterpoint to foundations. We would be doing one theoretical action with the Foundation, so it makes sense to do a practical action to expand the network and use what we have developed as well. It also does a good job of balancing which project members are on which action. As for why Kislev tributaries specifically, Boney had this to say about the purpose of the tributary actions:
The purpose at this stage isn't to achieve 100% saturation across the entire province, it's to shore up the Waystone Network where it's needed, to demonstrate the value of Waystones to Elector Counts that are currently varying levels of ignorant to apathetic about them, and to build up a proven track record to help with future negotiations.
The Kislev Tributaries do a good job at the "shor[ing] up the Waystone Network where it's needed" and "build[ing] up a proven track record to help with future negotiations" parts.

As for why I have assigned different members to each action:
For Foundations I think Thorek, Hatalath, Sarvoi are obvious. Egrimm is also an excellent human enchanter, and Elrisse knows lots of potentially relevant secrets. Niedzwenka, Zlata seem less likely to be useful, but I don't think it is too bad to put them on both actions, and their perspectives from differing paradigms might be useful.

I also explained my thinking about leaving out the rest of the project in this post, but the key point is that adding all those people in just makes the action more complicated, and harder for Boney to write, while not adding much in my opinion.

For the Kislev Tributaries I am including all those who worked on the Tributaries so they can share their knowledge.
This has been discussed a lot recently, but the short version is that I think it is the most impactful action we could take, more so than getting rich or spying on the fissure in the Cult of Ulric. There is also this bit that Mathymancer recently reminded the thread about:
The only real problem is where to go from here. They want to start trading and so do we, but they refuse to build a road through their swamp - can't blame them, considering how useful it was against the Beastmen - and the only other alternatives will piss off Nordland or Marienburg or both.
There is clearly a desire for the bridge from both the Elves and Middenland. Taking this action might get us interesting interactions with Queen Marrisith and Todbringer to work out the details.
Here is Mathymancer's helpful post discussing the pros and cons of each library option. I chose the GUoN, because I want maximum böök, and I want to get started on it now in case it is going to take time to copy.
Because I really wanted to last turn, and it is even more appealing as a Serenity action
For the Lustrian books and rubbings study: Because it is a research action she can contribute to as a real participant.
For the Windfall paper: Because I am hoping that the discussion on the observations of the winds with different types of windsight helps Eike better understand her intuitive windsight. I also want to see her interaction with Egrimm.
For Windherding and the Enchanting class study: Because I want her to observe our work on Windherding, especially as the item is for her.
For the EIC negotiation: Because I want her to see our solution to getting charcoal from Middenland to Laurelorn, and I want to keep up her connection to the EIC as part of one of our most consequential uses of it.

I feel these are the most important actions for her to participate in and I tried to pick actions where I think it will be easy for Boney to write her into the scene. I think 4 actions and a study is not too much for Eike. On the two turns we have had her she has been on 3 actions + a study and she should have 6 AP. Additionally I think her participation in the EIC negotiation, and on Windherding will be fairly short, so I don't think it will be too much for her narratively. I don't want to bring her along to fight a Rider in Red, or to create a Liminal Realm in case either goes sideways and we need to run. And on the Waystone actions I feel like she would just be tagging along, without gaining much.

Thank you for reading my dissertation. Please let me know if I should correct any details in the explanation or if you have feedback.

Those "millennia old warriors and potential female sorceress" probably have more experience in dismantling physical combatants with extreme prejudice than they do resisting their own senses and perceptions turning against them.

We don't need to bring a bigger knife to the world's deadliest knife fight.

I'd like it if you could have Eike accompany us on the Damsel trip. Getting to see Bretonnia for the first time would be fun for her, and she might even see the Fay Enchantress! How cool is that! Plus it's a good opportunity to see how diplomacy goes and make some progress on her 1/3 Politicking skill. As a grey wizard and especially as a Shallyan grey wizard, diplomacy is important. And she gets to see the Fay Enchantress! (I feel that needs extra emphasis.)

Please for the love of all that's good set the coin on the Father. @mathymancer has done an excellent job of convincing me of the Lady's daughterhood and I'm hella keen to properly test it out. Plus it'd be a really big deal if we did get them in on the waystone project, given that the Damsels have some really nifty magic.

Gonna note a preference for Nazgul but it's not critical for me.

Additionally, I worry that a pocket knight—horse and all—will see very little action, unlike a fog that twists and manipulates perception—a fog that decieves—which I feel could be more useful in a broader array of settings and scenarios.

I will say that despite my personal distaste, the Rider in Red is probably the best choice for shoring up weaknesses, while the Whispering Darkness is the best choice for enhancing strengths. Both of which are valid paradigms with different applicability.

(And there's a case to be made for getting the straightforward one first and then going after the one that is more likely to have complications once we have some practice and a better idea of what the process entails.)

Those "millennia old warriors and potential female sorceress" probably have more experience in dismantling physical combatants with extreme prejudice than they do resisting their own senses and perceptions turning against them.

We don't need to bring a bigger knife to the world's deadliest knife fight.
I think they have plenty of experience with that stuff just by around other Druchii. At the end of the day Red Rider is more dudes on our side, which is hard not to benefit from. I'm not so sure that's true for the deceiving mist.

Plus, we have a bunch of tools that cover pretty similar things. Our existing Ulgu spells provide a lot of utility in that space already. There would probably be a few edge cases where the new spell would be better than Pall of Darkness or Cloud of Confusion, but in comparison the Ulgu spell list covers almost none of the utility of a heavily armed and armored rider on demand.

This is what I would want out of a non-Father Plan, so I'd approval vote for it.

Question: what are people seeing as the pros/cons of infiltrating Nordland rather than Middenland or the cult of Ulric?
Personally, my opinion on inflitrating the cult of Ulric in general is: Don't. The Hochlander was skeeved enough when we did the cult of Kunerous.

If there were a just "make contacts" option, that would be one thing but I'm leery of spying on Ulric.

Infiltration Nordland at large, though, seems like a way of gauging sentiment among a group who might otherwise be hostile.
