I loved the atmosphere of this one.
and on the study of linguistics, which in Elven texts are largely focused on the descent of primordial Eltharin from Anoqeyån, the supposed origins of Anoqeyån in the tongue of the mysterious 'Old Ones', and the further devolution of Eltharin into the dialects of the ten kingdoms and the languages of the Elven diaspora.
This is fascinating to me because it's a complete vertical slice of linguistics, and almost pristine in its descent from how it sounds.
Which means it's a model of how to dissect and trace any other languages, like a scholarship template. I can see how the bonus would come into play and I like it.
Unless - you frown and leaf back through the pages - are the actions of Malekith being blamed on Asuryan here? From a Hoethian point of view, is the Sundering the result of a divine mishandling on the part of the Emperor of the Heavens? That would be a particularly spicy take.
Oooohhhh, druchii-adjacent takes! But I like how Mathilde is framing this- not 'makekith was acting as asuryan' but focusing on first the actions (bad) then the actor (Malekith) and finally the metaphor (a god did this) to get 'blamed on asuryan'. It's such a wonderfully contained piece of moral reasoning to cut through BS.
In any case, you find that you prefer Verena, who has much more of a focus on using knowledge for good, rather than simply acquiring it for its own sake. She also has a sword, and would be much less likely to meekly sit back and accept the destruction of Her personal library.
OMG Mathilde sees herself in Verena. Or wants to.
I know that Mathilde and Ranald are close, but I still want to see Mathilde as a fan of Verena.
Like Sigmar, but better.
The inevitable result of this is that these Indic books on Aqshy are very different to Collegiate ones. Where the Colleges focus on the brute force that the fires of Aqshy can bring to bear, these books focus on the ability of the Wind of Fire to instill bravery and passion.
This reminds me of the torq with the inspiring cloak of fire that we handed off to the viceroy, as a symbol of office. I like that it's something that the empire would find mysterious and exotic, while the indic people would see it as normal for a leader and perhaps a trigger for a bit of homesickness. What with the item being made in the empire and all.
More seriously, I like the idea of bright college/indic practitioners cross training as a WEBMAT project. It gives us a reason to base a bigger institutional part of it out of K8P, it gives us a solid reason to expand institutionally, and it'll net a rotating background cast of bright journeymen coming to learn.
outside of it their most visible roles would be as leaders of festivals and counsellors against melancholia.
Also I think this is very important to import and could be an amazing soft tradition alongside the college's hard martial 'throw more fire at it's tradition.
But maybe I just like it because I can imagine my little bright journeywoman from U-K8P growing into this if it were an option.
Another milestone that passed almost without notice was your fortieth birthday.
Hi I too just turned 40, I see that your campaign to make me empathize with Mathilde continues apiece.
You don't feel forty, but then again, you suppose you don't know what forty is supposed to feel like. What you feel like is, well, like yourself, only more so.
...yeah ok. Yes. Nicely put.
