I had no issue with that in the books. The movies tho. The epilogues there were the worst.
The first book on the other hand has the whole Tom Bombadil section that imo does not add anything to the story or is a meaningful worldbuilding.
Hm, I think the idea was to set up knowledge of him before rivendell, so they can have their whole conversation of, "Why don't we just hide the ring with the super powerful dude nearby?" And justify that it needs to actually be destroyed instead of just hidden away. It's not super necessary though.

I'm actually a big fan of songs and poems in stories, especially when they're woven into the narrative. Admittedly, LotR doesn't do the latter too much, but some of them make it up by being incredibly evocative. Shoutout to the Song of Durin.

I was never that huge into Tolkien, but the Clamavi de Profundis cover of the Song of Durin is one of my favorite songs, period.

It is really the dwarfiest song to ever dwarf. Excellent piece of music.

Regarding Tom Bombadil, he iirc predates both the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings as a children story and he was tacked into LotR. I personally loved the interlude, but i admit i am something of a rabid fan so probably not the person to ask.

Tolkien would largely agree with you. He said that Bombadil was not important to the narrative and that he added the character because he represented something Tolkien felt was important.

He does predate all of Tolkien's published Legendarium, although it's worth noting that Tolkien had been whiling away at the mythology of the setting for twenty years by the time Tom got published in 1934.

@Boney if you're still taking social action suggestions, could go see a dwarf choir concert. Opportunity to insert culture and history, plus gives something to talk about for Mathilde and whomever she goes with. Might be a fun thing to do in Middenheim with an Eonir.

I got a bit of inspiration after reading a bit of LOTR to explore the Warhammer equivalent, Olorin. But after some exploration, I'm not entirely sure on his status:
"What about yours? Magister Patriarch Olorin, isn't it? I've never heard much about them, which I suppose is only natural."

"Olorin retired back when I was an Apprentice. Algard is the current Magister Patriarch."
Mathilde says he retired back when she was an apprentice. I'm not sure what kind of retirement plans or pension that the Grey College offers, or if it even has a retirement plan in the first place, but she doesn't mention him passing away. He's also not visible at all in Grey College functions, so I don't have any idea what he might be doing.

If I decide to be cheeky I might just have him hanging around close to the Moot with his old buddy Bimbo or something.

The Greys almost certainly have a retirement plan. It comes up basically everytime the treatment of its members by the colleges is discussed, but they're very invested in their members wanting to be members, and being generally happy with their lot in life. That especially goes for the high-ranking members. Beware of elders in a profession where people die young. Though for the Greys, reaching forty or fifty is probably enough. Regimand retired several times, and while that seemed to be a cover, it also indicates it's a decently common occurrence, or would be a shitty cover. And IIRC, one of the Grey LMs was mentioned as semi-retired in the update on the big staff grabbing contest.

As for how that looks? Since wizards are nerds, I imagine a lot like a professor emeritus. You've got an office, and you occasionally show up to read an interesting paper or do some experiments that caught your interest. At irregular intervals, you hold a lecture.

Which incidentally means Mathilde could've already effectively retired, if she'd take Belegar Sinecur position. Or once the waystone project finishes and she decides to only be head librarian.

DL Adventure Hooks 2
DL Adventure Hooks 2:
Tzarina Kattarin the Bloody ruled Kislev with an iron fist in living memory. Few wish to return to those benighted times, but of those who do, her Vampire brethren might be the most dangerous.

The Praag Kalashniviks were supporters of the Tzarina's reign, but the Resvynhaf Kalashniviks were found innocent during Tsarevitch Pavel's purge of Kislev. It is the Ice Court's mission to investigate the Kalashniviks once again, their suspicions raised by recent activity along the Kislevite border. The PCs are unaware that their employer is an Ice Witch in disguise, for they need scapegoats in case the investigation goes south, but they have been hired to investigate what Boyar Kalashnivik was doing in Praag while his settlements were besieged. It is likely that whatever he was doing, it might have something to do with the frozen corpse of Tzarina Kattarin, and it is up to the PCs to find out.
Karak Ungor, also known as Red Eye Mountain, belonged to the Dwarves long ago. It is now the lair of one of the most prominent Night Goblin tribes north of the Empire, the Red Eyes. Unfortunately, that mountain has been a cause of concern lately, as Goblin corpses wash down the river to Ostermark and disturbances reported by Fort Jakova in Kislev attest to.

If anything is disturbing the balance within the ruins of the lost Dwarf Hold, it is of the utmost importance for that disturbance to be identified and reported to the authorities. Karak Kadrin, Ostermark and the Boyar of Fort Jakova in Kislev all have a vested interest in being well informed of any change in circumstances, but none are more invested than the Dwarves. If an able group of adventurers were able to breach Ungor's defences to investigate the cause of the disturbance, there would be quite the reward in store. This is no mean feat, but perhaps the Goblins of Red Eye Mountain are too preoccupied with their own problems to care for a small band of roving adventurers, which places skills in stealth at a premium.

What lies within the depths of Karak Ungor? Could it be Skaven making their move on Goblin territory? A rival Greenskin clan? Or perhaps something more? That remains to be seen.
Talabheim is in quite the buzz as of late. A series of murders plaguing a Noble family of some notoriety, a search being conducted over the streets for a cultist, and the rather public chase through Talabheim's streets has caused rumors and gossip to fly about faster than any messenger bird could manage. The official story is that the Longshanks tracked down and successfully took down a Magus of some sort of Cult, and that their efforts won them the day.

The truth is altogether more complicated, but unfit for the public eye. What few know is that the Cultist in question was of some importance, though none recognised him, and that he was not alone. His corpse yielded no clues, but to the Ulrican City Watch, labelled the Dogfaces by the public, this situation holds great value. A particularly sharp watchman acquired some clues as to who might have supported this Magus, and he is looking for some individuals who could work outside the bounds of the law. The Watch cannot allow themselves to be upstaged by the Taalites, but they couldn't afford to show their hands either.

Whether these clues provide a usable lead into the identity of the supposedly Slaaneshi Magus and his Cult, or whether the watchman in question is genuine in his investigation, is still up in the air. It is up to the PCs to find out.
It is known to the population of Carcassonne that a distinct problem has reared its head within the Dukedom's southern quarter. A distinctly Orcish problem. Normally, this would not be such a big deal, Orcs being what they are, but this problem is not normal by any means. These Orcs are known as Iron Orcs, and they exhibit traits endemic to Black Orcs, such as meticulous discipline and frightening combat ability and tactics, combined with armor containing Chaos Runes. If it wasn't for their small numbers, they would be a threat to all of Bretonnia.

These Orcs have contented themselves to raiding the southern villages, stealing cattle and sheep and ransacking villages, slaughtering their inhabitants. Their patterns indicate a shrewd mind behind the attacks, and their habitat being the Irrana Mountains hamstrings the traditional Bretonnian approach of pincushioning the enemy under hundreds of charging lances.

No singular band of adventurers could hope to stand under the greentide alone and win, and the Bretonnians certainly don't expect much from the unchivalrous sort to accept mercenary contracts (not that they'd ever admit that it was such). However, they would be willing to pay a tidy sum for a number of Shepherds grazing their flock around the southern borders to act as scouts to detect enemy movements and acquire sensitive intelligence. They would also be quite grateful if said shepherds were kind enough to protect the villages in the area, for they provide some of the best cheese in Carcassonne.
It is a well known fact that Couronne and the Wasteland have had a long history of border disputes. One need only look at the Third Sacking of Marienburg, involving the Bretonnian occupation of the trade city, to see that for themselves. Bretonnians are quick to claim that it was Marienburg that requested Bretonnia to take over the city to protect them from the Norscans, as the Empire was in turmoil and incapable of defending the city at the time. It takes only a brief look at the history books to see that Bretonnia only managed to rule the city for five years precisely because Middenland could not let the Bretonnian occupation of Marienburg stand and mobilised an army to rectify the situation.

Regardless, the border disputes between the Wasteland and Couronne is quite the contentious topic, filled with heated emotions from both ends. As such, it is quite nervewracking to see that the disputes are back in full force as of late as the question arises once again where the borders between the two provinces lie.

The biggest force behind these disputes is none other than Earl Adalbert of the Marches. He is perhaps one of the greatest of the Horse Lords of Couronne and holds a deep seated ambition to become Baron, and he believes that he could achieve such a thing were Marienburg to fall into his hand. These ambitions are likely to clash with those of the Directorate, who are fiercely protective of their independence and freedom. Where the PCs fall in this dispute is an open question. Earl Adalbert is always ready to hire a few adventurers to acquire information and cause trouble to improve his position, and the Directorate hold vast sums of money to hire disposable mercenaries for all manner of operations. Where exactly this dispute leads, no one can rightly say.
It is not common knowledge that Barak Varr have plans for Sartosa, but then again it is also not common knowledge that Sartosa used to be a Barak Varr colony back in the day. Considering Sartosa's history, it certainly wouldn't be a surprise to anyone who knows Sartosa's tale.

It is therefore in Barak Varr's best interest to learn what is happening in the land of Pirates and "Freemen". Traffic flow has increased through Barak Varr due to some sort of event occurring within the island state, and Barak Varr aims to learn why.

Unbeknownst to those not of disreputable occupation, the Pirate Princess of Sartosa has been kidnapped by none other than Borgio the Besieger of Miragliano. The resulting power vacuum has caused quite the stir as Pirate Lord fought against Pirate Lord for power and influence. Contrary to popular belief, Sartosa was not a bloodbath full of death and destruction, but a bustling town full of conversation and politicking. It just so happened that an occasional knife in the back and body dumped in the Pirate's Current was not all that out of place.

What shall become of a group of adventurers wandering into this unstable landscape? Let's find out, shall we?
AN: I always wanted to make a sequel to my first ever omake to this quest. I have a couple more ideas, but I think they could use some more fleshing out. My brain is kind of fried right now. I'm also struggling to make any quest type based off DL that isn't some sort of investigation.

I'm kinda interested in this, but unsure what it actually is. Potential adventures for Mathilde, or for separate adventurers in the DL world?

Basically, the RP sourcebooks would have "Adventure Hooks", which were basically just that, a short blurb about a location/group suggesting a possible adventure a DM could entice an adventuring group with. Something to provide inspiration to DMs.

So Codex wrote up some based on DL-canon.

(Basically, the latter)

I typically don't write about Mathilde directly. If I do, it's usually adjacent, like the sort of effect she has and the ripples she produces. I leave Mathilde to Boney, but I like playing around in his world.

Good stuff. I don't quite get how the last two tie into any DL events as opposed to being generic WFRP hooks.
IIRC, the Barak Varr-Sartosa thing was mentioned as something that might appeal to Loremaster-at-Large Mathilde Weber if she decided to go that route instead of Waystones. Along with fire drakes in Zhufbar and a couple of other things that I don't remember.

Both were mentioned in DL, I just expanded on them:
An uptick in traffic through Barak Varr, apparently as a result of more infighting than usual among the pirates of Sartosa. And rumours of unrest between Marienburg and Couronne, possible a reignition of the eternal question of where, exactly, the border between Couronne and the Wasteland can be found.

You know, it hadn't occurred to me before, but as far as our potential mission of "do something about the Iron Orcs" goes ... I wonder how hard it'd be to use their heresy against Mork and Gork to trigger the other Greenskins in the area to act against them for us????
