Also how much AP are we going to spend on Eike if we take her as a apprentice?
I was going to say that we don't actually know how much AP it takes to train an Apprentice, but then I found this:

If that system is still how it works, then recouping a single half action wouldn't be sufficient.
That was from a while ago. My current thought is that as well as being able to take actions solely to educate the apprentice, certain actions would be nominated as 'Apprentice actions', which would receive either a malus or bonus based on a diceroll to determine whether the Apprentice proved a help or hindrance in that particular circumstance. But that's not set in stone at this point.

Unknown at this point, but based on that I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I want Red Riders more than I want Handmaidens, I tell you what. Mostly because Mathilde has no real issues assassinating things herself, it's just in open combat where things get dicey. And Red Riders are fightier.

It felt like I was listening to the ramblings of an old history professor who's very passionate about the subject he's speaking about.

I haven't even gotten to the first chapter. I'm more of a narrative person who enjoys worldbuilding being weaved into a story, but I don't exactly dislike a prologue clarifying that kind of stuff so I can understand things more clearly when I begin reading. It was nice to learn all the stuff the movie doesn't exactly stop to tell you about though.

Tolkien is truly unique as a writer. He wrote the Silmarillion and Lord of the Rings to provide a world for the fictional languages he loved to create, and if he had his way the latter would have been published in Elvish.

As it so happens, 'suss' as both a verb and an adjective has been a part of Australian English for decades. A dodgy situation might be described as 'suss', and one's response to it might be to investigate it to 'suss it out'.

Speaking of WEB-MAT, as a rule of thumb, @Boney is it accurate we shouldn't do more than two actions with the same person a turn or else they start getting annoyed by us hogging their time? Or is it three actions?

No hard rules. Assess what those actions actually are and whether or not that represents a reasonable demand on their time, and how the individual might react to such a workload.

IIRC apprentices don't take AP. While they cost AP to teach and such, they also give back an equal amount of AP by assisting us with stuff.
That'd be reasonable. Mathilde already has seven or so categories of things she can do: Research, publishing, Aethyric Vitae, Self-Improvement, Enchantment & Spell Creation, Foreign Relations, Personal Relations... There's just not enough AP for all of it, and adding Apprentice actions on top of that would be kinda overkill, IMO.

Going by previous statements, its likely that the full system for apprenticeship won't be worked out until and unless we actually vote to take an apprentice- for much the same reason that Boney isn't going to do a deep dive into Imperial politics unless we actually vote to get involved in them.
Yeah, that sounds like a lot on Boney's end of things.

They're pretty busy learning *actual* thieves cant, among other things, but I'd be entirely unsurprised if they developed their own versions among their generation. Hell, I expect the Grey College would encourage it.

An organic and entirely new cryptographic language that anyone older than 20 is unable to make heads or tails of without comprehensive study into not just the words but the encounters and lifestyles and memes of said generation (because words don't mean what they on the surface should mean, and what do you mean 'lit' is not a description on the local illumination levels but an indication on the levels of 'hype')?

"Yes please!" cries every teacher in the Grey College.

Well, I'm now imagining grey magisters illusioned to look like teenagers trying to infiltrate the teens and figure out what the hell they're talking about, so thanks for that.

Yeah- remember that Mathilde started out with a bare handful of spells and a few personal skills. While it is implied that she was pushed out the door a bit early due to the machinations of the Lamians, I think people are maybe overestimating what an apprenticeship actually entails as far as 'imparting skills' goes.
My headcanon is that Mathilde wasn't well suited to apprentice style learning. Fresh Mathilde was kind of unexceptional. Not bad, but not as impressive as the ducklings (who are probably towards the top of the ambition/competence rating for journeymanlings). I chose to believe Regimand was aware of this, and that's why he shoved her out the door into that situation, armed mostly with a spell for running away.

It should be noted that Mathilde was actually in that much direct danger. A hell of a lot of pressure, yes. But the Grey College wouldn't have killed her for her entanglement, and she was in a rear line position with little direct danger (until she decided not to be and delved a burrow, but that was her choice). The biggest danger was the conspiracy, but it thought she was working for them. And she was. So if anything, they'd be inclined to protect her (though probably not expand much effort towards that).

So for a bright but kind of unmotivated journeymanling who really needed some pressure and responsibility without a huge risk to life and limb, it was downright perfect. Honestly, Regimand quest must've gotten snake eyes and a nat 100 for that placement, and MoneyB had to spend a good while thinking where he'd find a position of empire level responsibility with great safety for a fresh journeywoman.

So yeah, I believe apprentice Mathilde wasn't that great, but Wizard Dad knew her potential and providence ensured the perfect spot appeared just at the right time.

I'm sure we'll manage to Eike out whatever AP is needed to satisfy Mathilde's Wizard Master hat.

Also training Eike shows Egrimm how a proper apprenticeship is meant to go, along with how Mathilde treats her underling apprentice.

Talking of apprentices, some dwarven lore can only be passed on to Mathilde's apprentice if she learns it. I think that both Gazul Lore* and Arcane Khazalid fall into that category.

Those become more valuable to get as a result, as they're something that can now be shared and would give our apprentice something near unique to build on.

I still think learning multiple arcane languages might produce advantages in understanding magical phenomena as well. It would be pretty cool to one day be one of the only two people in the world to know all three of Arcane Khazalid, Aonoquean, and High Nehekharan.

* hopefully about the dwarven understanding of the soul and possibly about the Glittering Realm.

I hadn't thought of that—Eike's going to spend most of her apprenticeship surrounded by mages of many different kinds. I wonder if any will be willing to share bits of knowledge with her. Obviously not how to cast their own spells—she's an Ulgu wizard first and foremost. Ice magic and druid magic are out of her reach. But interacting with the best and brightest mages on the continent will surely be good for her.

Not just that, but they may bring their own apprentices along.

Throw her in a pit of swords? That's how your train disciples, right? You throw them in a pile of symbols of your order?
So that means swords for the Grey, scythes for amethysts, fire or keys for the brights, eagle for amber, and I don't know for blue and gold. It looks like a great idea!😏 Canon Alric was really the best! :V
