The trouble, of course, is the caldera. Between the recent religious disagreements and the rapid changes in leadership, the greenskins have fragmented into a dozen or more separate groups, and those that held the Citadel will allow none of the others to approach. That can not be counted on to continue when battle begins, so to prevent the battle turning to a meat grinder, something must be done to prevent reinforcements from the caldera. With your achievements so far, every head turns to you to suggest a way to accomplish this.
What's the approach to the Citadel from the Caldera look like?

Ideally, this is the time when Mathilde started shanking warbosses left and right and blame it on other warbosses, but that plan seems a bit too basic.

Anyone have any idea how to refine it?

@undead frog / @10ebbor10 - You both made posts that added nothing good to this argument and should remember that sniping at another user is not the best way to conduct yourselves. Please act with more thoughtfulness in the future. You will also be getting three days off from the thread
I think you put either the wrong name here or screwed something up when entering stuff into the system. Because otherwise I shouldn't be able to do this.

An avenue about as wide as three men standing shoulder to shoulder, with greenskin buildings to either side.
Pretty narrow. If we could get troops to it fast and clear the buildings above, a shield wall and overwatch would probably strangle most attempts. Are the buildings anything special, or is it just a bigger collection of Greenskin shacks?

Any chance for a map of things? Even a basic one would probably be a big help in planning.

I'll admit I was wondering something along those lines lines too.

Looking back I did screw up after all, so I was wondering if something was going on or if it being preliminary meant it just hadn't sent in yet.

[Cleric Gunnars: 100.]
Hurk, *clutches chest*, young dwarf, I have no idea who you are but your roll was quite possibly clutch as heck. The earlier rolls were making me sweat, so seeing something just totally hit it out of the ballpark like that was quite the goddamn relief.

... Also, dagnabbit, that "Now look, just take a look at her shadow. It's the same." thing made me chuckle. Just... It's such a small thing but, it just works somehow. It's just such a... well, such a totally straightforward thing.

I think we should consider paying dwarf favour for lessons from Cleric Gunnar. Or paying money, if we can instead.

And we should probably look into whether his order has contacts with runesmiths who make greatswords. Mathilde should have a reputation as an undead slayer, and the Grey Order mission can be sold as similar, particularly as the sword is a symbol of both.

Yeah, we should be able to hold that if we can get to it.

But I think the first and most important thing to do is scouting. We need to know what the state of the Garrison is and (if possible) what is going on in the Caldera.

It's only the next morning as your sluggish brain follows through on the plans your ale-fuelled self had made that you realize that tithing this is going to raise quite a few eyebrows at the Bursary.
...generous donations by overly thankful soldiers who owe us their lives many times over? They'd probably buy that. Or at least file it under the 'acceptable corruption' heading.

They apparently have confirmed it as severely weakened.

The preliminary scouting Ulthar's rangers performed before they joined the celebrations was successful beyond all expectation, and they had pinpointed the locations where the greenskins had piled bows and arrows and javelins and rocks to help fight off any attacker. A single carefully-aimed volley of cannonfire will remove the capacity for those inside to defend at range, and from there it was simply a matter of assaulting and expelling the severely weakened garrison.

Oh yeah, we've got Scorpions. A good set of spots in the Citadel that we can set those up with a view of the approach, and we'll riddle any early attempt, and that will buy time to get to the actual approach.

Aside from that, Rangers with more poison and perhaps Mathilde herself raising hell on the nearest warbands should help delay any organized attempt to reach the Citadel.

@BoneyM Do the Rangers (and us) have a good way to get down to the Caldera before the battle starts to cause a ruckus? And do we have any more of the poison available?

Ah, thank you. In that case, I think the best move might be a targeted assassination or two in the Caldera when the assault starts to keep the greenskins down there too confused to head for the Citadel.

The huts will give them some cover, though, so it won't be as effective as it might be. Still a good idea, though.

Would positioning artillery on the top of the caldera to bombard the approach bellow be viable?

Edit:not just scorpions but also gunpowder artillery.

Basically flatten the whole place.

How about this for an ambitious plan?

The sun rises in the east, and the Caldera is west of the Citadel. That means that at dawn and for some times into the morning the Citadel will cast a long shadow over the Caldera. We also know that Burning Shadows can be cast on the shadows of structures, and the Citadel is a structure the dwarves built above ground, not a natural terrain feature.

My proposal is this

[X] Mathilde infiltrates into position to be down sun of the Citadel and arranges for the dwarves to attack at the local dawn, when the sun becomes visible above the eastern peaks. She then times the conclusion of a ritual casting of Burning Shadows to complete moments after the sun is visible and the Citadel's shadow is cast.

This should neatly solve the problem of reinforcements from the Caldera, as any greenskins that try to run up the path will be melted before they reach the top.

Does any one see any critical flaws with this? Apart from the risk of ritual casting the spell, which is probably a nice to have rather than essential.

The dwarves having an expert on the situation is not entirely surprising (little surprising they had one to hand), but I'm glad they did.
