it would be 200 pages of the flight school meme.
No it wouldn't. This is from the last update:
You nod. "Don't want to miss the Barazdeg itself."

"What's up with that? From how it was explained it seems like some sort of wife auction?"

"Well, the thing about that is..."

As the two of you head back to the Grimbrow Clan Hall, you explain the finer points of Dwarven culture and the unspoken understandings and behind-the-scenes negotiations that underpin the ancient rituals.
This is from her character sheet:
Karaz Ankor, Advanced: You're more at home in the Karaz Ankor than the Empire you theoretically owe allegiance to. +2 Diplomacy
And though I don't have the quote for it, Boney said somewhere that Mathilde is the best expert on dwarves the Colleges have.

So no, it's not just 200 pages of flight school.

I'm actually not feeling a lot of the top vote-getting choices, because they're people we generally have the opportunity to chose social actions for. I'd rather meet some genuinely new perspectives.
I feel the same, honestly. There's a lot of opportunity to talk to people here that we'd otherwise have to spend AP or something on to really get in a conversation with, and while talking to Gunnars or finding stuff out about how Stirland is doing in the war or who Okri is is... interesting enough, I'm really much more interested in talking to all those normally harder-to-access people that we may want to deal with in the future. The ones we don't really have any contacts with yet.

Basically I want to take this opportunity to make new friends that are hard to make otherwise, and prod people for how they feel about Library/Waystone Project deals.

I wanna do some POLITICKING.

Yeah. Me too. Stirland, Okri, and the Ulrican-Eonir thing are nice and all, but we could use next turn's socials on them instead of having them take up space that could've been allocated to more time sensitive things that'll cost proper AP or be completely unavailable next turn.

Shame about the giant pile of votes we'll have to surpass for that.

Let's talk and find out things we would not usually do.

I feel like the main difficulty here is that the social hangout and the pragmatic votes are competing for opportunity space, when ordinarily they're separated.

The only thing is: those kinds of politics and diplomacy books are only written after you retire.

because they would get in the way of you actually doing your job.

Mathys views on dwarfs are that she likes them, but they are very very tragic, and its very very much their own fault in as many ways as its not: and that's not really something the dwarfs will like to read or hear.

so the book would likely be very much classified until she dies, and maybe for a while after, so that it doesn't get in the way for her going her thing.

Could we write the book on diplomacy with the Karaz Ankor? Now, most of Mathilde's reputation with the dwarves has to do with her deeds, but she does have a great grasp on dwarven culture and politics, the leading expert in the Colleges of Magic in fact.

Depends on what you mean exactly
Write a book explaining the bits of Dwarven culture and politics that are public knowledge?
Sure Mathilde can do that, but that's ground that's most likely been thoroughly covered by tons of academics and diplomats already

Write a book on the bits of Dwarven culture and politics that aren't public knowledge? Like the various tensions that exists within the Karaz Ankor between Karaks?
Well Mathilde could technically do that, but for a lot of it the reason it isn't public knowledge is because the Dwarves would rather those bits not be known

Write an actual guide to Dwarven diplomacy?

I should say that those were not her initial base stats. Her Base stats used to exist back on Orokos but that's gone now. Roswita's traits since she met Mathilde, like the one where she has a knack for Wizards, boosted her Diplo, and the Marine trait boosted her Martial.

Dice Roller • Orokos.com

Orokos is a tool site for role-playing games, such as Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition, allowing players to upload characters from Wizards of the Coast's Character Builder program and providing a dice roller and attribute calculator.

Praise be the wayback machine, for preserving the lore of the ancients! Sadly it doesn't go beyond 2018, so no rolls of more recent events.

The Empire has Extensive and Esoteric books on the Karaz Ankor, so overall, the subject has indeed been extensively covered by various academics and diplomats. However, newness and perspective matter a lot. Mathilde's lived among dwarves for over a decade, something very few humans can say they've done. More significantly, Karaz Ankor itself has shifted significantly compared to how it used to be decades and centuries prior. Three karaks are back, resulting in new trade, connections, alliances, and even outlook; dwarven willingness to take on human aid is much greater than prior authors reported, and the repayment of debts is now more emphasised than it was before, with Karak Eight Peaks inventing having a big ceremony emphasising the Dalaz Kron. The specific cultures of those three new karaks would also be worth reporting on, even if of course Mathilde's most familiar with Eight Peaks.

There's a lot to be written about even without stepping into what the Karaz Ankor would prefer remaining private, and Mathilde's the single best person in the Empire to write about it.

Another thing worth considering is that in writing our book, we'll be drawing from Dwarven Esoteric books on the subject and potentially Eonir books too. There'll be public-acceptable information in that literature that previous Empire authors wouldn't have had access to; the DF for the rarer dwarf books is very hard for academics and diplomats to gain on account of Flight School reasons, while the Eonir are a brand new source of information entirely.

I don't think the point of a book on diplomacy is to share your private personal thoughts on what you think of a society on a normative level. If somebody from, I dunno, Bretonnia were to write a book on diplomacy with the Empire and filled it with a bunch of stuff about how they think the Elector system is incredibly dumb then that would be a book on the opposite of diplomacy, as illustrated by object lesson. "How to Talk Good to Dwarves" isn't going to focus on "here's things I think about Dwarves that they don't want to hear." That's directly antithetical to the premise.

In general, I'm baffled that people are suggesting that Mathilde doesn't have anything valuable to say about diplomacy with Dwarves outside of "kill stuff for them lol." Literally, the number one diplomat in the whole ass Empire sought Mathilde out for her insights into Dwarven diplomacy, and her advice to him was not just "have you tried stabbing orcs and/or rats?"

She might need to dial back the frankness of some of her assessments and massage the framing a little for a general audience, but Mathilde is a damn Grey Wizard and at this point probably a prospective Ranaldite Saint. I think she can just possibly make her peace with that concept.

Ultimately Mathilde is still somebody so deeply immersed in Dwarven culture that she is literally considered to legally be a Dwarf now as per the conclave of Karaz-a-Karak. Yes, there are presumably other works written for humans about how to do diplomacy with Dwarves, but how many of them do you think were written by somebody who is, somehow, simultaneously both a Dwarf and a human? And has spent literal decades actually living in the Karaz Ankor? Most diplomats who have had dealings with the Karaz Ankor wouldn't have done that, ever.

I've been convinced by the argument that we really wouldn't have another chance to talke to House Fooger, and I am interested in what they might have to say. Perhaps House Fooger sees which way the wind is blowing and is trying to position itself in order to benefit from the canals, even though it might prefer for them not to exist at all.
