I say go Longshanks and then Ice Witches or the other way around, neither faction would have any reason to dislike the other and between them we should get a picture of both sides of the borders.

Wait, we can't just appear out of nowhere in the dead of night in the Elector Count's chambers to talk to him unofficially? What are we, a Bright Magister?!

[ ] Longshanks
Gratitude expires quickly, so you might as well make use their good graces while you have them. In Ostermark they're primarily guardians of shrines and pilgrims rather than Witch Hunters, but they'd still have a good idea of what's going on deep in the forests.
This is my favourite choice, they seem the most likely to know what is going on in the deep places of the wood.

[ ] Morrite Witch Hunters
While the citizens of every province of the Empire respect Morr, Ostermarkers revere him more than most, which means that Morrite organizations like the Order of the Shroud, the Dreamwalkers, and the Andanti fill the role of Witch Hunters in Ostermark where normally the Templars of Sigmar would hold sway. Get in touch with them and see what they might know.
This would be my second choice, it would be interesting seeing Mathilde interact with Morrites given all the supposed to be secret lore of theirs she has.
[ ] The Ostermark Hedgewise
The Hedgewise of Ostermark are a matriarchal mystery cult with ties to the Hag Witches of Kislev, and many of them are part of Kurtis Krammovitch's extended family. They have eyes and ears in the odd nooks and crannies of Ostermark, and are likely to know more of what's going on here than anyone with official authority. But they are unsanctioned magic-users, and dealing with them might be problematic.
This is interesting but seems too problematic. There's a big difference between working with them on a project outside the empires borders and working on one within the borders where we are technically required to take them in to the colleges. I would absolutely go for this if we had the coin on the Father though just to find out if it works.

I'm thinking Longshanks on this side of the river and ice witches on the other if possible. Poking the rulers doesn't seem necessary. Not sure how well received she'll be with the ice witches, but I guess we do have some recognition with them.

I take it we can only choose one option? If so I'd want to go with the Longshanks to strike while the iron is hot with that favour we got in Talabheim. Though there might well be some tension between them and the Ice Witches @DragonParadox since Talabecland once controlled a lot of what is now Kislev and has fought wars with the Ungols, Khan Queens and Tzars over it. Meanwhile the Cult of Taal and Talabecland are basically inseprable since the Otillian emperors so there could still be issues there. Or maybe not.

Eh, that's what we're a Lady Magister for. We can take the heat, and having Hedgewise help would be legitimately helpful here because the Hedgewise are deeply embedded in the rural isolated communities where the problems are likely happening. They'll likely have a lot of actionable intelligence.
And of course, we want to get closer to the Hedgewise anyway, so that will help.

You've grown far beyond my expectations, and you've developed skills equal to your ambitions.

I don't know, we're nowhere near Nagash level just yet.

[ ] Morrite Witch Hunters

Sounds interesting, and we can probably use our Morr Secrets from the Libre Mortis to get a foot in the door.

[ ] The Ostermark Hedgewise

This will help us pull them in for the waystone project. I'm not sure how useful they'll be, but pulling them in under the Grey Order's authority is step one to integrating them into the empire officially, and whilst I don't want to jump up and down on their traditions, I do want to bring them under the protection of the articles. Also might bring in Kurtis as well, if he's not busy with something else (he's an LM, they are always busy).

Again, good for the waystone project and highly respected on their side of the border.

Hmm.. fair point, I don't think individual Longshanks out here in the boonies would care that much about that sort of big picture historical trends, but that kind can filter down.

Mathilde: so what's going on in your corner of the woods. I'm here to kill it.
Hedgewise: (infodump)
... Problem solved.
Mathilde: ok, so... Anyone want to join the grey college?
Hedgewise: no.
Mathilde: kthxbai 🤗

Gotta respect those articles

so for me (in no order)

Longsharks for this side of the border

Ice witches for the other side of the border

Hedgewise for our own goals and ambitions, plus a little bit for every side of the border.

I am leaning towards Ice witches: getting them will give full legitimacy of action* Lady wizard Mathy has the legal right of 'sticking her nose in it' on one side and the Ice Witches on the other.

will make any future actions much easier (legally).

though they will probably not like Johann.

If we want to have a quiet unofficial conversation with Wolfram Hertwig, we could absolutely do that; the problem is that he probably doesn't know too much offhand, and won't be as able or willing to help in that sort of surprise meeting. If we actually want his assistance, we want to talk to the Elector Count of Ostermark, which means talking to him in an official capacity that will allow him room to draw on the resources of his office.

Maybe just a 'hey Dammerlichter is here to deal with this' courtesy call? Hm.

We could do that. He might not be very helpful if we do that though. Tends to make people resentful.
Ok so if we're ruling out "Too low-key" how do you feel about either of these options?
[ ] Too magically. Announced by an invisible orchestra as you appear from thin air before her in court.
...
[ ] Too Dwarfily. Borrow a Throng from Zhufbar.
Personally I lean toward too magically, everyone already knows we are a dwarf-friend. Lets play up the magic angle a bit more.

If we have to choose between the Longshanks and the Ice Witches then I would go with the Ice Witches, because that carries with it the authority to investigate on both sides of the river without causing a international incident.

again, from a opic perspective, Ice Witches and Boris make the most sense

the biggest probelm has been that what every it is has been able to pop over the border every time one side gets too close.

so take it from both sides!

[ ] Elector Count Wolfram Hertwig
I'm down to be a background event roll in the Ostermark CK2 Game, that the negaverse there suddenly has to deal with.

Just amused at the image of the Ostermark ruler setting their intrigue advisor to the problem, and said advisor just being the Anton of spies. "So I went to look into it and I found a Wizard Lord, or rather she found me? Anyways! Problem Solved. :V" Yearly report just comes in and the thread has to stare at like a +80 bonus to the roll haha.

[ ] Ice Witches
[ ] Tsarevich Boris Bokha
But yeah also I'm down to interact with some ice witches again generally, but I'd rather not deal with the headache of running mental circles around the Big Rules about unsanctioned magic users atm, so striking the related hedgewise off the list for me.

Boris is an interesting enough character that I'd be happy interacting with again out that way.

[ ] Morrite Witch Hunters
We know morr about their religion then pretty much anyone could be expected to outside of the clergy, it'd be fun to flex those muscles a bit.

[ ] Longshanks
Pretty much spelled out in the option, keep the dice rolling on a good thing before they settle. They might not be the most Powerful option of the bunch but I wanna see more of them. :p

[ ] Elector Count Wolfram Hertwig
Chancellor Wolfram Hertwig has a reputation for being sensible, and if anyone would know what's going on in Ostermark, it would be him. But approaching him openly would make your presence here very official, which might get in the way
So, we approach himnsecretly and just appear in his bedroom one morning. What's the worst that could happen.
