Just because it's common throughout dwarf culture doesn't mean Thorek's attitude towards the Middenheimers is good.

It's not common, it is universal, thus rendering any sort of value judgement is kind of moot other than in how one would do so upon the whole of dwarf-kind. It's like me arguing that slayers are stupid and evil as an idea, they are but there is no point dwelling on it.

I didn't dwell on it, it was a brief mention of an exception to the main thing I was saying. The one most driving the thinking and discussion on this topic is not me.

I'm currently thinking of using our EIC actions to set up transportation contracts for trade between the Empire/Karaz Ankor/Laurelorn. Thorek seems interested in trade, Mardil and Miriel seem interested in Azul's products, and Ellemakil want stronger connections with Middenland and trade can do that. It's great that Wilhelmina set up shop in southern Middenland, probably in anticipation of this very move. Very canny of her.

My current thought is to use a Max action to get him a workshop with House Miriel's assistance, and start trade negotations with any of the three aforementioned houses using our EIC action if we can do so.
Time for the EIC to monopolise being the middlemen between the Karaz Ankor and Laurelorn!

...Saying it like that makes it sound ominous.

You know what? I'm glad Eike is in the Grey College right now. Handing someone a corporation with such absurd power is very liable to cause corruption. It's genuinely funny how the EIC might be the most outwardly visible Grey Wizard controlled organisation in the Empire outside the College itself.

Didn't we almost date a dragon of Hysh? We should send Alric over there. They can be great friends.

Sure it could back fire, but I really want to see OP scenarios. Alric+Dragon=fits.
Also perhaps he could become loremaster of K8P. He'd definitely love the prestige.

If not, then we did have a list of things we could have done instead of the waystone project. Maybe he'll end up doing one of those!

Okay, but if we are sending any Hysh Wizard to pair up with our not-spouse, it has to be the canonical dragonrider!

Yes, I know what kind of dragon he rode and under which the circumstances he got access to it; no, that's not enough to stop me.

<Pelt of Horros>
The Pelt of Horros was taken from a fearsome wolf that terrorised villages around Middenheim. Nicknamed Horros, after a savage wolf of folklore, it was eventually slain by a knight.
I think that myth is what the spell The Savage Beast of Horros was named after, which means that spell was invented by humans rather than elves.

so you want to send Eigrim to K8P instead? But I suppose that Alric does look like a hairless elf. He can stay in Laurelorn where we can keep an eye on him!

I kind of want Egrimm to be evil so Alric and him can have a dragon fight now.

Maybe the knight was an elf back in the days when humans were still cowering in caves, or maybe the name came from some hedge mage's spell that kind of did the same thing and was applied to an elf spell after Teclis taught it to the empire. After all we do not know that it is called that in Ulthuan.

Superb update, as always. And veeeery Interesting~

On the dwarven front, I'm glad we went with Thorek on this. He seems more willing to bend and adjust than even the average Dwarf, let alone the average Runelord, and that's likely to be crucial in this project. Plus, the simple admission about the war of vengeance being avoidable earns him a lot of points- being willing to say that rather than simply toeing the party line without thinking takes immense self-awareness and willingness to self-examine (especially for a dwarf).

So yeah, very happy with Thorek. Even the knowledge that he's going to politic doesn't change that, as I easily trust him enough not to cause a major incident that gets everyone chucked out or anything, and so long as he keeps his word on helping with the project (and he will) anything beyond that is none of our business.

As for the light order, meanwhile... well, I think we can definitely say 'bullet dodged' when it comes to Egrimm. If he's outright crowing victoriously over Alric's string of misfortune, I suspect he must have been close to the breaking point. Alric's behaviour, on the other hand... is he just naturally stubborn and/or addicted to power, or does he have an arcane mark messing with his head? Because sure, people will go to more extreme lengths to gain/regain power in real life than he's taking, but his behaviour as described by seems more desperate than I'd expect from someone of his age and experience. And desperation + powerful magic user is never a good combination.

We should bring him into the waystone project. He's lost a bunch but not everything just yet. We can recruit him. Besides he'll be a pain if he turns to chaos. Elves can keep him from being influenced.

Its Thorek, not Thorgrim.

Alric should go and clear out a Dwarfhold. We have shown it to be a tried and proven strategy.

Maybe we could do him some good and point him towards Karaz-a-Karak after Mathilde hears about the recently planned campaign.

Thorek being reasonably diplomatic is going to be a big boon to the project. He's not going to blunder into something because he reflexively disapproves of elves.

He was used to be the Supreme Patriarch - the head honcho over all the Colleges. Even being the head of the Light College is sort of a demotion; being a 'mere' Lord Magister is bound to hurt, particularly since it means that the other LMs have picked Mira over him.

Alric is still an extremely powerful wizard - what he seems to be missing is the respect and admiration of his peers.

This might be an example of someone achieving a Mastery that improved an elven spell, and then successfully codifying it for other wizards to use.

Honestly, if loyal! Van Horstmann gets to be friends with Cython to the point where he is allowed to ride it, his canonical fate would only make our success better.

My current provisional plan for next turn, subject to change:

1. WEB-MAT: Get Max to make a workshop for himself with House Miriel. Not only does it give him a workspace to continue his studies, it allows him to ingratiate and introduce himself to House Miriel and if he's lucky enough and they're interested enough in his Dwarf taught skills, maybe he can join a Smith Kithband.

2. WEB-MAT: Get Horstmann to get the Light Order involved, set Coin to this action. Maybe if we rope in the Light Order into the project, offering Mira the ability to provide support, she can leverage it into a notable act that proves that she's a better leader than Alric who's so focused on his own personal prowess over attempting to solve the Empire's diplomatic troubles.

3. WEB-MAT: We have a free action here, probably Johann. Not sure what we'd get him to do.

4. Explore the Ward of Frost: We should get on with our exploration here since this is where Cadaeth, our initial contact is. They were one of the people most invested in the alliance, so we should get to know them and get them on our side.

5. Furnish Research Space: Self explanatory, we need to get started.

6. AV: I want to get started on AV. One might ask why I changed my mind from getting the Light and Jade Orders on the same turn. Well, someone suggested we might want to use the coin on every recruitment, so since we're restricted to one coin per action, I'm separating it. Also the action economy is too cramped and it was the easiest thing to cut off without removing AV.

EIC Action: Start trade negotiations with House Mardil. They're the traders so they would be the most inclined to form contracts with the EIC to transport materials. This is essential for continued trade relations. If we can prove to them that we're worth it, they will fight for us. It also might give us EIC influence on the area that we can leverage to have a network of informants in Laurelorn and Middenland.

We should talk to houses Marduk and Miriel before trying to jump into bed with them.

Let's please use the get to know someone action before trying to cut a deal with them!

Am i the only one thinking Alric might be the bad guy?
Hmmm, bit of a controversial opinion around these parts but I'll give it hesitant support.

Personally I'm hoping there will be Grey Lord actions next turn now we've met them and if so I think we should prioritise that over interacting with the houses/wards. Also if we have a free WEBMAT action I'd say either put it toward attending a powerstone creation class with one of the other members (IIRC Boney said we can attend classes with another member as a WEBMAT action) or try and recruit Hugo Bann as I still think he will be very helpful for windherding/waystones if we can get him.

It goes both ways. Translating from a punless language to one where speaking clearly and directly is quite possibly a grudge-worthy action, you have to alter the words and meaning.
And I guess that Mathilde isn't yet good enough to find a way to phrase it in which "past" sounds like a synonym for Caledor (the region?) and "hope" is described as eternal, but with Saroir mangled into Shanaar or whatever.

My current provisional plan for next turn, subject to change:
1. Quick reminder that Max has abysmal Diplomacy. His interaction would be the first official attempt to establish a working relationship between a WEB-MAT member and a local House. I don't know if I like that. In any case it might even be worth using the Coin here instead.

2. It kind of does need to happen, but doing it through Egrimm would be a clear and visible escalation of Mathilde's involvement in that conflict. That doesn't mean I'm necessarily against it, but it does bear mentioning IMO.

3. I want to contact one of the magic worshipping Houses sooner rather than later.
