Well now. This certainly makes the Waystone project all the more viable. Though what I fear now is this Grey Lord making the sheer loss of runic knowledge the dwarfs suffered all the starker. Kragg might have made this less of a worry, but at least with whatever success we get on the dwarf rune side will be spread back to the runesmith guild.

The way the queen and the grey Lord casually chat about the centuries really shows what a time abyss the older elves really are. I was half expecting a tree spirit of some kind but thankfully at least these people have motivations we can (mostly) understand.

He's arrogant, but also seems a decent fellow who is trying to not be an ass and thinks isolationists are stupid. That's a pretty good deal, honestly. Kragg was worse initially, if anything, and we made it work.

Tch, you look away for a few centuries and the whole world changes on you.
"Yes, its extremely inconsiderate when it does that."
"Greetings to you, daughter of Freya. It's been some time since I walked your realm, but I always found the Asoborns to be a cheerful and sensible lot. Much better than the Styrigen. I am the Grey Lord Hatalath."
:o we finally learn Mathildes mothers name. But how did he know :thonk::thonk::thonk: :V
I bet one like that it'll be Alric, come to complain that we poached his gofer.

Edit: Weber'd. Take one like!
Unfortunate timing. Or very fortunate.

Huh. Lots of arrogance and condescension, but that's pretty much an expected hazard of the job when working with ancient elves - frankly I expected worse, and I do get the impression that he's at least trying to get along.
Seems like he thinks humans shouldn't be trying to do magic, but at the very least he seems to have met humans and decided that he does approve of some so his opinions are not formed from stereotypes and pure arrogance.

mmm...

If I were to guess he thinks Sigmar did a good job so he likes it when humans try to play Sigmar rather than wizard.

I mean, we apparently doged a major bullet there, with that mention of an Uncle.

And this
And I had just wrapped up my latest project, and I've actually walked the world since the time when humans were terrified primitives hiding in the woods and mimicking our Waystones, so I was the natural choice. Besides, the other option was your Uncle."
is likely a tad overexagerated, but it still is something that understandably greatly colors their views. Really, no amount of relayed news will grant them the cultural context that even the isolationist elves have aquired over the many years. The fact that us being a magic capable human being a surprise alone really highlights that blindspot on "recent" news.

I think that statement is him just side eyeing Mathilde while saying "isn't it illegal for humans to know magic in the empire/s?'"

I got the impression that his objection wasn't that Mathilde was a human doing magic, it was that she was doing magic in a way that gave her chiselfingers. We'll probably find out for certain once we interact with him more.

I've only known your people for a few months, but I relish the opportunity to know more."
"My people are but twelve, and I doubt you've met any but I
Hmm.

This is in "archaic but fluent Reikspiel," so I can't be entirely certain, but this use of "people" seems to me to imply the Grey Lords aren't terribly nationalistic.

There's probably more than a few stresses between them and the other "two thirds of Laurelorn," though I suppose that shouldn't be surprising.

I will admit, I don't quite see the arrogance coming from this guy?

He is old and not up to date with the rest of the world, yes, but that's being hyperfocused, not arrogant.

Assuming his views on magic are not too dissimilar to the Archmages of Hoeth, to him Mathilde is basically the equivalent of a baker covered in burn scars from the multiple times they stuck their arms into an oven trying to pull the bread out.

"Dabbled in things she shouldn't have" is a pretty easy conclusion to make when you count transforming part of your soul to Ulgu as a negative.

I wonder if the couple that was mentioned are the "good vampires" that others of the thread have been looking for. Maybe these are like those who drank dragons blood or similar and joined the Grey Lords club to hang out with their fellow immortals.

Well, that seemed... amiable.

But I wonder what exactly he is? One of the Grey Lords is apparently considered, or actually literally, the Queen's uncle so... is this some kind of transformed or transcended Elf? Half elf, half spirit, as a result of whatever transformation happens? (The fact that they apparently are helped kept alive by the Eonir, via magic, does seem to imply some kind of supernatural existence. But then we were already suspecting or expecting that to begin with.) Or was the uncle comment a bit metaphorical rather than literal familial descent?
"And her?" he asks, looking over to you. "A go-between from the human realms, I take it? One who has been dabbling quite a bit in things she shouldn't, by the look of her. Which Emperor does this one belong to?"
Was that referring to the Arcane Marks Mathilde bears? The Dwarf gear? Touches from Ranald? Or something else? Dabbling in politics of Laurelorn? Or just "humans doing magic at all"?

I don't think it's that last one, which is why I figured it was the Arcane Marks that got that reaction.

I think it was this bit.

Terrified primitives, and mimicking Waystones.

I'm not certain if it's intended or not but I'm curious to how the Grey reacted to the common name of Karak Eight Peaks. I suppose that's a simplification since they were speaking Eltharin but I was frankly expecting them to use the Dawi name of Vala Azril Ungol, or "Queen of the Silver Depths".

Huh? There was no couple mentioned that could be vampires, and why would there be any vampires among the Grey Lords?
