Predating the Old Ones does not make you beyond the Gods, I mean hell Dragon Ogres predate the Old Ones and and I think one of the Ducklings killed one of those.
The Ambers did. IIRC during the expedition. That said, the faq does claim that the players are not given the Dragon Emperor and Moon Empress as Legendary lords because they are on the same level as gods.

Wasn't referring to age. Quoted straight from totalwar.com:

Fair question. Yes, the Celestial Dragon Emperor still rules over Grand Cathay. He spends his time in the Celestial City above Wei-Jin, contemplating the destiny of the empire with his wife, the equally revered Moon Empress. They are the true 'power couple' of the Warhammer World, older than most of the gods, for they existed when the planet was colder, before even the Old Ones came and pulled it closer to the sun.

As they rarely leave the Celestial Court and their power level is, frankly, on par with most gods, we knew they were not the right candidates to be Cathay's Legendary Lords – in much the same way you're not actually playing and deploying Khorne or Nurgle to the battlefield. Instead, their children provide a much more interesting prospect for the game, they are still extremely powerful characters with compelling family dynamics (spoiler, the siblings don't get on), but with all the responsibilities of ruling and protecting great swathes of Cathay.

So technically it states 'on par with most gods', though gods vary a lot in influence and strength too. I'm guessing they're on par with the more major ones which means they're beyond more numerous minor ones (and ofc far below Chaos), but that is just a guess.

We don't know much about the nature of the gods, but assuming a god's power is proportionate to worship, they would be one of the stronger ones out there purely because Cathay is the largest and most populous nation in Warhammer, and the citizenry worship them as gods. It doesn't matter though, because they seem to be like most gods. Generally apathetic and rarely interventionist. Seems like the type of thing that comes with great age and power.

If anything gods skew weak though, there are a lot more gods of minor and local matters than the big boys like Sigmar and the Lady

I really enjoyed the flying airships.

In regards to lighter than air ship design I don't believe Mathilde has seen one in action.

The dawizhar occasionally have them depending on the work.

The dawi used to but no longer have them.

Does the empire use observation balloons?

Would Mathilde skywalking down from an observation balloon risk a miscast more or less than teloporting down?

If you have a source of magic fire would it be viable to build a large parachute like contrapition for a gyrocopter. Something to provide upperwards lift so you don't crash?

I don't believe so.

Well, used to/might in the future, depending on if Malakai ever makes the Spirit of Grungni.
Might still have depending. 8th edition had the Dwarfs having three, without Malakai's involvment. An unnamed one that was destroyed, one that traveled to Nuln and the Wrath of Thunder. Engineer by the name of Sven Hasselfrapp built it.

I always get a weird vibe from lorebits that are only in the 8th edition core book.

It's like... to use an example.

On the matter of the Norse Dwarfs being dead:
-The 8th edition Warriors of Chaos book says they were all killed off.
-The 8th edition Dwarfs book says nothing about them dying, and gives some small clues that suggest they're alive.
-The 8th edition core book says that, not only are they alive, they sent down a giant converted mining drill garrisoned with organ guns and steam cannons to assist their cousins.

Like, seriously, it's a thing.

In recent years, only one army has made the long journey from the northern hold of Kraka Drak all the way down to Karaz-a-Karak. Seeking to forge a path straight through the mountains, the Engineers of Kraka Drak converted their revolutionary 'tractator engine' from gigantic rock grinder to a mobile garrison, fitting it with multiple Organ Guns and Steam Cannons. The Engineers carved a bloody path through the Orc tribes that infested the mountains, though they ran so short of coal that the motive power was often provided by goblinoid corpses set aflame by potent liquor.

That's our Games Workshop! *laugh track*

Both this and Johann picking up Eltharin quickly only through exposure and interest really boosts my headcanon about him having ADHD. I hate academics when I'm forced to do them, but if it's something I'm actually interested in I can be insanely productive. Johann is really hitting all the same buttons.
This is a great point and I love this take. "Interest-based attention span" really does explain a lot of observed facts about Johann.
I understand that this isn't directly relevant to DL right now, and obviously there already is a thread for Total War, but the trailer for Cathay is out:
I am intensely horny for everything about this aesthetic. Thanks for sharing.
Speaking of dragons: we should find out if Cython is interested in corresponding with the Imperial dragon :V
Imagine Mathilde's expression if one of her Elven acquaintances in Laurelorn walked up to her and went "hey, I actually met another human the other day. do you want to correspond with them? you're both humans!", and then imagine a dragon making that expression.

Honestly if the human wasn't one of the other webmat wizards I'd want to know who they are. A human who has managed to get into Laurelorn publicly is an interesting thing at this time, and one of the more likely option of who it could be: a Middenland diplomat to them, could be a useful ally to be introduced to.

Also, Elspeth's Carmine Dragon might be a better candidate to introduce Cython to, as it is a wind aligned dragon that has established a partnership with a scholarly person.

Cython's backstory clearly demonstrates that if they desire draconic company, they are perfectly capable of conquering an archipelago and destroying passing Druchii fleets from it to attract said company.
