Though the Grand Principality of Ostland is better known for its role in the profitable troll hunting business there are many other monstrosities hunted for profit in the province. Amongst them is the squig, that ubiquitous monster of the underground. Squig hunting is a rather recent development in the province as for the vast majority of its history the region where one has the greatest odds of encountering squigs, the Middle Mountains, was almost wholly without human inhabitants due to the great danger posed by the beastmen and greenskins of the mountain range. Ever since WAAAGH!!! Gorbash slew the majority of the Middle Mountain's beastmen and left the region with nearly every orc and goblin that lived in it in tow, the province of Ostland has made a major effort to finally pacify and settle the region, and ever since the settlers have had to deal with the WAAAGH!!'s leavings.
Squigs are hunted on either an ad hoc basis or by professional squig hunters. The former usually consists of farmers and other rural folk seeking to either kill or drive off the beasts before they devour the villages herds or inhabitants. Oftentimes the villagers bring the butchered carcasses of the creatures to the nearest market town though sometimes they will simply burn the dead beasts due to ignorance of their value. The latter group consists of retired soldiers, adventurers and hunters who have decided to specialize in one form of prey.
Even the common cave squig is a dangerous beast in spite of its immense stupidity and their bodies consist mostly of tooth filled maw and stomach. More than able to kill a man, squigs will attack nearly any creature it encounters without any provocation. Hunters must be cautious when approaching, taking care to avoid alerting the squig to their presence, and be alert for other beasts surprising them, for cave squigs travel in packs. Once a squig herd has been located, the most common tactic used by hunters is to lure it into an ambush at a prepared defensive position. There are several ways to do this, from using fire to force the herd to travel to the ambush site, to using a trail of bait. However the most successful tactic is for one of the hunters to gain the attention of the herd and heading to the ambush site at full speed, preferably when mounted. The actual killing of the squigs ideally involves attacking from range with bows and handguns. Failing that boar spears are recommended, preferably more than one per hunter for when a squigs snapping jaw inevitably snaps a shaft of one of the spears.
The dangers of squig hunting are great, but many will say that the profits are worth it. The red hides of cave squigs fetch good prices on market. are used to make a tough leather that is used to make durable scabbards, clothing, saddles and straps for armor, as well as tough armor in its own right after it has been boiled. Their flesh usually commands much lower prices as it is tough and mildly poisonous to humans, causing painful stomach cramps unless properly treated, and as such it is most frequently fed either to the poor, for whom it is likely to be the largest cuts of meat that they will ever eat or to ogres, who can digest squig meat without issue. However, the cult of Esmeralda has developed a process to render cave squig meat digestible and in the settlements blessed with a Great Kitchen of Esmeralda squig stew is a popular dish. Their walnut sized brains are used by wizards and enchanters to make potions that cause the imbiber to briefly enter a state of rabid frenzy and attack their foes with immense ferocity.
The rarer breeds of squigs bring their own challenges and profits to the table. Gas squigs, for example, spew noxious miasma clouds at those they attack, and so one must either attack it from beyond the reach of its miasma or use protection for the mouth, nose, and eyes to prevent oneself from emptying his stomach as the gas squig rips open his belly. If one succeeds in taking the beast down its gas sack will fetch a fine price from doctors and priests of Shallya who use it as an ingredient in antidotes for several poisons.
