...Yikes.
That's a spooky thought right there, especially since we tell the Elves, I see it as all to likely some dumb wanna-be Teclis is first to poke it and go 'oh' before a scorch-stain rips out of the Ogham all the way to that dumb Asur's face before terminating in a big explosion of OW! Suffice it to say he is not around for the local Albions to yell at for being stupid...
Though...
Hrrm.
Albion is WORRYING, now, because the Fimir are directly squatting on it and totally want to pop that gate open for Chaos. It's probably only Tzenteech deliberately being obtuse that keeps him from just sending a few too many blessings towards the Fimir to prevent that egg from blowing up...Assuming of course, the Druchii don't do it for him.

That's the thing though, they don't want to do that. The Fimir don't want to knock over the Ogham Stones or outright blow them up. They want to use the power as is.

And why shouldn't they?

The mist hides them from the rest of the world, the usurpers of the north, the gods themselves who tossed them aside for fickle reasons. The power is all theirs. And the current circumstances creates an environment that's perfectly fitting their biologies.

Let's not go and think it's our job to save the world now that Torroar has outlined what exactly has been going on for over 7,000 years. The only reason it is suddenly worrying is because one is only aware of it very recently. Despite everything, despite nonintervention for thousands of years, it hasn't imploded and destroyed the world. Certainly there is no reason to not keep helping in a hands off manner and get our pound of flesh in trade, but all evidence suggests that the situation on the island is not going to radically change in a manner with global consequences.

Yeah, and its been stated already how the Fimir had taken over most of the ogham stones several times in Albion's history and world is still alive. I think the fimir are most invested in gaining power and doing something that gets the Chaos Gods to pay attention to them again, and getting power over the ogham stones might help them with that in their mind.

Either way, the best thing we can do is help now and generally support Albionese as we have been doing already.

[X] Plan Manticore and Wolf takes Castle
-[X] The Oghams: There will be only the most elite Fimir Warriors and powerful Dirachs - or Balefiends, to use the Imperial terminology. One can apparently only even approach with a glyph of declared protection scrawled upon their person, as well as the presence of a Druid. Even worse, to get there one must try and creep through a deadly Albionese marsh to get there. Mardudd intends to join in on this effort himself. Twenty five of the best Greatswords will accompany Magnus in this, as too many bodies might ruin the entire point of attempting stealth through the marsh. None of the cavalry could even begin to try and make their way through the marsh. This will be done on foot, or not at all.
-[X] Shifted Tines: Mena and Reinhardt might be better placed elsewhere. (Castle)

[X] Plan: Castle Strike
-[X] The Castle: The bulk of the Fimir Force will be here either within or around, as will the bulk of the assembled Albionese and Imperial forces, ready to receive the Fimir once the 'Fenbeasts' break down the gates and walls and provoke them. The currently finicky magics of the wizards may be of some use here, but Imperial steel will be of certain use. Command will apparently go to Mardudd's eldest daughter, Aberfa, as well as a number of other nobles over those who they recruited from their own holdings. The Imperials will be on the right flank, due to not quite knowing for certain just how fighting in a more integrated manner might go. The Blue Wolves will wait on the flanks along with the rest of the Albionese Cavalry.
-[X] Full Trident: Mena and Reinhardt will fight side by side with Magnus, whatever his choice.

The Fimir might not want to blow the Oghams up. But imagine an island totally controlled by immensely physically powerful Chaos-aligned evil motherfuckers who are smart enough to make and use real armor (unlike most ogres), who are ruled by Chaos sorcerers of whom the lesser variety are a match for a Magister while the greater variety provoke "thank the gods that literally the Supreme Patriarch was there" reactions, and who cannot be counterattacked on their home turf because they're surrounded by hypermagical Chaos mists that they control the keys to, meaning they can raid and attack at will and never fear retaliation at home. That might not have global consequences, but having a place like that right off the coast of the Empire seems like it might have some pretty fucking nasty local consequences. You know, for us, the locals.

That's the future Albion is currently sliding towards, and Magnus and co. taking back a couple Oghams to clear things up in the immediate area enough so they can get back on their boats and leave is not a fix, or a turn of the tide. I think that finding out about that is worth more than some hands-off trade, considering the arms and training we've provided so far haven't stemmed the tide. Because this, this right here? This has emphatically not been the state of Albion for 7,000 years. This is a new low, and the tide is still against us.

I mean, ideally, we find out Magnus overperforms to a Freddy-tier degree and he nukes their God-Queen or whatever. But if we don't get that lucky we should be very seriously thinking about taking a more active role on Albion going forward.

Reading about the Albioneese is so sad. They gave up their paradise home to save the world, and nobody noticed. Even more annoyingly the elves took all the credit.

I wonder if they might be trying to ascend someone to daemon princehood? Normally it's something sponsored by a chaos god, because they're the only ones with the power or inclination to do it, but the mechanics of it all are just ripping out your soul and replacing it with a mass of warpstuff shaped like you. Totally doable with the kind of power something comparable to a way stone would have. If they could manage to do it they would be basically unstoppable and a major prize for any prospective gods; the only issue is if they have the control and magical knowledge to devise that kind of ritual.
(All assuming that I AM right about everything I outlined)
Edit: (and this would be a long term goal, at present I think the fimir just want Albion to themselves)

@torroar where did you get this saying? I've been looking hard to find Verenan sayings.

Made it up. Pretty easy. Verena said to glare, sometimes is blind, eye focus. Closed Eyes means more fair, more sedate. Open eyes, judgey, danger, uh oh. Thus: Verena's Open Eyes = curse/oath/expletive.

Myrmidia. Gold. Shields. Eagles. Spears. Etc. Go from there. Thus: By the Claws of the Eagle! I swear by Myrmidia's Unbroken Spear, etc.

Sigmar. Barbarian King. Hairy. Strong. Powerful. Physical features, etc. Thus: Sigmar's Balls, what is wrong with you. By Sigmar's beard, of course. Beneath Sigmar's Gaze. Etc.

Goes on and on for all the Gods and Goddesses: By Shallya's Tears, Dove's Cry, Manann's Breath, Wavelord's crushing grasp. Morr's Falling Scythe. Raven's screech. Etc. etc.

Masterful Dawi runes are not the same as petty umgi enchantment. Dwarf weapons have been successfully used during storms of chaos so Brain wounder should be fine. Mena's blade by contrast is likely to explode so she can't come with. As for Reinhardt his sword is too weak. He only managed to kill the other Firmir by going for their weak point before and that was against the scrub units. The elite forces are liable to be too tough for his sword to deal with.

Well, at least we have a connection to the higher echelons of the Asur wizards that some can come to see it?

I think it is still a very much important thing to at least inform them and provide more help to the Albions. Even in the form of just assassins deployed to murder the Fimir leadership or sow chaos.

I dont, just more ways to help them would be nice. Teclis might appreciate the change of scenery over the mountain of paperwork he is doing instead.

The thing is we probably won't have any IC reasoning for that. Frederick himself barely even knows what the Great Vortex is save that it's a thing and it's important.

The Albionese have forgotten the worldly importance of the Oghams, and if any among them remember they're not inclined to share it beyond "you touch wrong, bad stuff happens, then we kill you"

Magnus and co. are at best concerned with getting off this island and assisting those who fight the general good fight, it is extremely unlikely they'll get information that would prompt them to call on the Elves to intervene in a "poke at this stuff magically" manner...and finally, even if they did I wouldn't want to do call on them for that because it's hella dangerous.

What I am most worried about when the High Elves find out, and they will since assuming wizards survive they will tell colleges and it will then likely reach Asur, that they will show up to help... by taking it over since clearly they are more equipped to handle care for ogham stones. This would naturally cause them to come into conflict with the local Albionese since care for ogham stones is a major part of their culture and as shown with wizards they can't trust outsiders to them.

Most elves naturally think most humans are super underdeveloped and only a bar handful around worth working with, and even then they are only around for a short time.

From what I'm getting at, is that just by surviving this encounter Elves will eventually know. And if that's the case, do we have any incentive to tell anybody about this knowing out of character and in character that the Albions see this as possible Colonizer bs?

Its kind of why I was thinking of using the connection we have of Aurelion and getting it to Teclis ASAP.

Out of all the elves, he is prob the few that knows the implication of it. Since this discovery will be reported eventually, it is best we get the super expert and most diplomatic one instead of someone else.

so our magisters saw oghams, saw very clearly that they aren't waystones, saw effects on the winds that are clearly very strange, and a whole human-mage tradition that is succeeding without Teclis' guidance

which is. I mean.

If it's not the elves, and it's not the dwarves, then who was flickering the lights?!

lizards. It was lizards

A runefang is precisely what the doctor ordered against Fimir elites, they're designed to take into account storm of chaos level environments, so at worst its still a really sharp, nigh indestructible sword wielded by a master asskicker

[CANON] A Role Reversal - CuriousStranger
A Role Reversal

2342 IC

The grass is green. The sky is blue. Soldiers never stopped whining. Universal truths even in this godsforsaken land.

Unforunate, Greatsword Ingert Aach thought to himself. His fellow Greatswords had reluctantly stripped down to half plate, some more mournful than others as the great chunks of plate were wrapped tightly into oilskin blankets and away from their sight. The damnable rain continued to pour down on them and a great many of the soldiers, nursing killer hangovers and fighting in some strange land, were muttering to each other in low voices, their talk muffled by the sound of endless gurgling streams and water crashing down onto them. Nothing too damaging to morale, and nothing that went against the wishes of their respective lords. Still. Still.

It was godsdamned annoying.

One of his fellows, Kraft, continued to curl his fingers around his mustache, all the heavy seawater and freshwater they were surrounded in having made its way through the moustache wax he normally used to keep himself presentable. Eyes bloodshot and his hair a mess, the man looked a far cry from the dandy he often looked like. And the talkative man would not shut up. He was amusing to many of the others, but this time his tone and words had gotten quite queer. Strange, and yet… familiar.

"Bastards," Kraft muttered. "Savages. The Empire hands them finest plate and arms and what do they do with it? Cast it off for it to rust while they wear the barest bits. Ostland craftsmanship. Wasted. And these hovels. No need for stonework no sir, who would ever need stone when you have mud in an eternal storm? Like casting pearls before swine."

Ingbert recognized it now. It was the tone often heard from a newly arrived Dwarf to Ostland, one who'd look at the finest works and man and call it rubbish craftsmanship, the tone of a craftsman seeing the works of a child with some sense of condescension.

Another Greatsword nudged Kraft, distracting him from the rant. "Eyes up man, the lords and wizards going on talking to the headsmen, and these Albionese are getting mighty excited. What do you think they're saying?"

Kraft raised a hand to his eyes, squinting as he did. He saw the furious gestures between what looked like primitive shamans and the finely dressed wizards of the Empire and diverted to a new rant, this one a phantomime. "Oh great and mighty lords of the Empire, though your land is vast, your armies mighty, your women beautiful, and your men in possession of tackle of great girth, us dirteating mucks have been eating worms since my great-grandfather's time. We say to you that not only must you throw aside your arms that have been your livelihood for all your lives, but that you are mere children here while we stone bashing primitives know best. You wizards stay away, for our hedge shamans possess might that you can't imagine despite all your schooling."

Ingbert recognized the shift. This was a bloody Elf talking now. A paternalistic one who thought that humans were a bunch of overgrown wretches who enjoyed burning each other with flame while they'd long mastered fire. "Thought you didn't much care for the wizards man," Ingbert said, unable to stop himself.

"Better Imperial Wizards than these boyos I tell you. Strange and dangerous lot they may be, but gods take me if I take the side of some savage that fornicates with foliage by the looks of it, rather than a proper wizard from the Empire."

"You do realize what you sound like right?" Ingbert asked.

"I sound like the soldier I am! Always ready to fight and twice as ready to complain. Get a hold of yourself man. Have to empty the tank of complaints before a fight don't you know? Judging by the shaking and moving, we're about to give some bastards the taste of cold steel."

Ingbert sighed. Forget it.
