I actually assume the warp core on the Akira returns to the horizontal core style a la the NX class, probably just above that bulge @SynchronizedWritersBlock pointed out. If you accept the semi-canon that it has a through-saucer flight deck, the TNG-era up-down configuration doesn't make much sense, lest your fighter bay ALSO have the warp core running through it. Although I suppose it could be Defiant-style and fairly compact, but the Akira seems too big for that.
"George, George, George of the Flight Deck, Watch out for that warp core!"

@OneirosTheWriter what does need to happen for the shield regeneration project to have any effect? Because it didn't seem to relate to any version of the design sheet we were assuming it would offer a global bonus right away, but it looks like that's not happening?
It should have kicked it - I might have made a mistake on the code that gets that to apply. I'll make sure it is functioning well when Ainsworth goes after the Sydraxians.

The monstrous Rebel Alliance has in typical cowardly fashion ambushed and destroyed the harmless Imperial Mining Station, home of the Planetary Mining Superlaser that would have ushered in a new wave of prosperity and order to a galaxy riven by the turmoils of the power hungry Mon Mothma.
Huh? Is that meant to be a parody on what you think is something that most of us are easily capable of saying? I can't see a single grain of truth in said statement untainted by lies. They could have merely reported the destruction of the station and a list of personal lost and been more effective than what they published. I mean, that's Baghdad Bob levels of bad.

You ever like, live or work in a place where there was this huge pillar that was in everyone's way? Like in your house it was chopping the kitchen counter in half or at work it made it impossible to see who was coming in through the door, like Pete's office in Mad Men?

Imagine the inconvenience of that but the pillar is also filled with dynamite and people keep throwing paper airplanes filled with smaller sticks of dynamite around it, and it's your job never to let the two meet. Also, a bunch of people who's job is to keep an eye on the dynamite pillar keep getting in your way.

So I went through the tech document and I think I pulled out all the combat bonuses
To Boldly Go Combat Bonuses

So right now we benefit from improved shield regen, +3% combat in fleet battles, +5% combat when outnumbered, +1 L to all our ships if we start outnumbered by 2:1 or more, +1% to our combat vs Cardassians and Romulans, -1% to Cardassian and Romulan combat, 2% dodge vs Romulan and Cardassians.

A tech we may want to grab as soon as we can is 2320's Torpedo Tracking as that will reduce the evasion of opposing ships. Also the phaser burn through , getting all 4 would give us 11% burn through chance at which point our explorers could do enough damage to start dropping combat of the ship they hit. There is another 4% to combat from continuing the fleet comm techs.

Offensive doctrine is not included as we do not have the finalized versions up in the tech doc but there are likely several combat boosts in those trees.

So when it comes to Warp Cores and Akiras, the site I use as bible for internal structures is lcarsgfx, because I mean come on, these are awesome.

Neeto. I've been going of this,

I've seen that one before and totally disagree with the warp core placement. I know the OG designer of the Akira intended that the flight desk was through the length of the saucer, so this design either has the warp core either running through the flight deck, or if you drop the diea of a continuous flight deck it's serving as the backstop to two separate flight decks. Both of those seem like a Bad Idea. I always thought for a guy who made such high quality graphics it was a bit of an oversight.

So I think it's either got to be flipped, or more defiant-sized and fitted on the bottom five decks.

Check for Goatees, that is the clearest indicator.

I hate Carrier!Akira more than regular Akira.

You want a carrier?

BOOM!

Gotta love the Newton and it's BSG Pods!

So Akira has the bridge a couple of decks away from the hull, that seems like a good design. The Ambassador however puts it right on top....

And here we see the large number of shuttles an Akira class ship can carry, nifty.

The other possibility is that there is a separate ingress/egress flight deck - both on the same level, on port and starboard side, through the full length. Then there is a service area where they mingle. This removes the warp core from being on the flight path, so to speak. Being offset from the centre line is also why we don't see them on the MSD.

Pay extra attention to the bottom left of the Ambassador-1.png. Here Be Moonshine indeed!

Whether a starship like the Akira looks nice or not is really a matter of personal preference.

I think it looks all right.
This is the internet, you're not allowed to have a resonable opinion!!!one!!!!1

tho in all seriousness, I've always been fond of catamaran designs in general. I went sailing a lot when i was younger and watching a catamaran glide through the water always looked cool as hell to me.

And you dare call the Akira ugly?! that looks like a constie rammed itself balls deep into a broken in half serving spoon

Edit: that's not fair, it's more of an edging spade than spoon

speaking of carriers, would this as well as runabout/shuttle design be something we could pursue in the near future?

Sure, but even still that's like... (assuming I have your layout correct):
... I dunno, just seems kinda inelegant compared to flipping the warp core 90 degrees.

However it's not like it matters.

UNTIL I WRITE OMAKES ABOUT IT MATTERING IN ROUGHLY... 3 YEARS IRL

I'LL BE WAITING

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the idea of some sort of runabout tender or shuttle skirmisher. We do use runabouts for recon; you could have a ship based around using such teams.

However, something like a Galaxy or Ambassador would work well enough for this so...

Even the Akira has a big shuttlebay, yes, but it's also got mountings for like, 15 launchers. In First Contact and Message in a Bottle it's clear where the tactical focus is -- on the phasers and torps.

A carrier-esque variant of starship relying on lots of shuttlecraft?

Could that be USS Voyager? :V
