[X] Captain Maryam Ajam

Look. I didn't get the Omake I wanted done in time because I keep getting called into work (Oh God I have so many half finished drafts from the last week sitting around. Help me) But here'so what you need to know to know that Ajam is best waifu out best choice.

1) She has a lot of experience. She was Enterprise's XO. She commanded Courageous. She has a broad range of skills and can command a ship in both peace and war. The one failure that hovers over her career and life was the result of bad luck.

2) Her reasons are right. She'said not volunteering to check off a box on her resume or to redeeme herself for something. She wants to go for the pure love of exploration and discovery.

3) Steel: one of the requirements for this mission is to have the moral core to stand up to any pain, any humiliation, and any hardship and survive intact and in fact show the best qualities of Starfleet and Humanity. Maryam Ajam, when scraped down to her very core and all alone did not bend, did not break, and did not waver.

4) She undoubtedly has the name recognition, trust and authority that it would take to command independantly. Everyone will know that she clearly deserves her command. How can you not respect someone who went to hell and not only came back intact, but helped to save the Federation as she did so?

O'Hara wouldn't be a bad choice at all. He didn't have the temperament for war, but that same trait made him desirable in peacetime.

Personally, I just like the idea that he is doing this for redemption. Heading off into the unknown not because he is in it for the glory, but to atone for past mistakes. Anyone in his position would probably have just kept their head down after that court martial and try not to get any attention on them, the fact that he worked his way back up the ladder to get into this position says a lot about his drive. Plus he does have experience, and seemed to have the respect of his men, from what I remember, and morale will no doubt be an important factor in such a long journey.

[X] Captain Maryam Ajam
Captain, USS Docana (NCC-1810)
Has been agitating for the role since the mission was announced, looking to follow her dreams to distant stars.

She's the only one without some ulterior motive besides the journey itself. She wants to be there and, on an expedition like the one we're sending, that is more important than anything else. This is a mission of exploration far and above what most in the explorer corps do. It needs someone with that explorer mentality. Heck, the last few lines of the update flat out told us this.

She's also got the biggest kahones this side of anywhere. I mean, seriously, personally organizing the Grey October? What a badass.

The Vulcan is out immediately. It's a career opportunity for her. There and back again and nought else. That alone disqualifies her in my opinion.

O'Hara is in it for redemption. While a powerful motivator, we don't need someone who is either going to take risks with the justification of his redemption or avoid risks for the same reasons.

Well, when it comes to personal truth, Michael O'Hara, the captain who kept trying to beam survivors off a Biophage-infected freighter rather than blow it up, certainly knows his personal truths.

And we know Maryam Ajam is eminently suited for a mission like this- although there is the question of her husband and child.

Anyone who's been running the Cheron for the past several years must be one hell of an explorer captain, too.

I'd say ideally T'Mina would be the best physiologically due to her lifespan. However, a part of me wants O'Hara to do it. He's one of the few people in Starfleet whose managed to get the crap kicked out of him and managed to climb out of the crater sized hole he dug for himself. From what I can see, the guy's a survivor and that's what we need to get the Stargazer to hell and back.
We can't crew the whole ship with Vulcans, so the physiological issue is kind of moot. A lot of people are coming back from this mission on the gray side.

O'Hara, well. The flip side is, he's a survivor in terms of his career, but remember the reason he wound up in a hole in the first place. From a prestigious start like "Captain of Excelsior, possibly the first one after Sulu." He made an honorable decision, but a decision that ultimately could have cost a lot more lives than it saved. I'd like to think that it WASN'T the freighter he permitted to escape that was responsible for the infection of the Kadeshi homeworld in the first place. But we... don't know that for sure, I fear.

I have to question Seruk's decision to keep a Commodore off this mission. We are sending three Starfleet ships, not just one. A fleet of that size will have three Captains. Why not send a Commodore, or a Commodore and a Captain? e: Hell, we have Commodores commanding sectors with fewer ships.

We will also loose her as a captain. She is already not the youngest and the hardships you mentioned could make her retire even earlier than most humans.
I don't want to loose a good captain with a realistic chance for a regular Explorer-command .

Artemis, would you prefer to send away a bad captain, one who reduces the Stargazer's likelihood of survival? Anyone we send is going to be a good captain, or Seruk wouldn't have considered them worthy of our attention.

[X] Captain Maryam Ajam.

This is, literally, her dream- I remember the omake featuring how she experienced the time the Enterprise fell asleep at Hophos III.

I'm sympathetic to the Vulcan unlike most, but Maryam is a better choice.

O'Hara is not the man to maintain discipline on this mission, and that will be a challenge in view of its length. His own history weakens his leadership and authority.

T'Mina is a damn good choice and we'd be lucky to have her.

Ajam's so good that she boosts the ship's science and presence just by showing up.

[X] Captain Maryam Ajam.

I was leaning towards T'mina, but have been convinced that it would break Ajam's heart to pass her over for this.
