Candidate Observation – ESP – Captain Sasaki seems pleased enough that the candidates she sent last month are helping. But a problem many scientists have is that they tend to study the principles of their field in a vacuum. This is an ideal time to attach Defense Force observers along with the research staff to see how you can incorporate ESP control into a tangible benefit.

"Alright, alright, settle down, I'll tell 'em," Sam grumbles as he turns back to the microphone. Flipping the 'transmit' switch to SEND, he says, "Sam here. Just so you know, the boss wants me to make something clear. For the folks who 'get it,' congratulations! You're successfully progressing mankind's inexorable march to man-machine interfaces!"

"Now, with that said, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you might've noticed that some of you are getting some headaches. That part you don't need to worry about; apparently the use of psychic powers just does that. But do not, under any circumstance, operate your helmets for longer than two hours. Maximum. That's when you approach 'splitting migraine' territory, and the medical folks think you might break something. Like Jack."

"...huh. Book of Genesis. Okay, I seriously need to get him back to normal. *ahem* - With that announcement, do record when you get to that point. Everybody's grey matter works a little differently than everyone else's, so you might get there sooner or later than the schmuck next to you. And this is operating simple stuff, like block puzzles. It's probably going to be a whole new ballgame when we get to actually testing the man-machine interfaces for stuff like cars."

"Sam Carlson, we're done here."

Still active, but concludes by end next turn.

It appears that there is actually a large benefit for operating in what is mostly a rural area: the locals all are quite keenly aware of who actually belongs, and who doesn't.

So it's a good thing you had your officers network with the local leaders and law enforcement. Because security reported their first suspicious activity.

They did not come anywhere close to breaching the official perimeter, but a small group of people were noted to be setting up campsites decently out of reach of the official Institute grounds and along the treelines that are so common to this part of the continent. That by itself is not unusual, nor illegal; Morrison University was situated in a very nice and pleasant area if you liked outdoor activities. That said, sometimes your patrols would see the campers from time to time, but these individuals almost always moved to a more remote area.

But always within distance of the campus.

Your liaising officers compared notes with the local leaders, and those individuals did not seem to match anyone under their responsibility. Nor did the local sheriffs receive any notification that campers would be out in the area (though that in itself wasn't unusual; tourists did strange and silly things all the time, you see). But these campers' activities did not seem consistent with just an out of town tourist or even some of the more isolationist townsfolk.

Thankfully, the fact that the critical parts of campus are walled and have regular patrols have kept them well away. But now you wonder if there is actually a Westphalian cell operating in the area. More importantly, you want to know what the hell they're doing here, what they know already, and what they intend to do in the future.

You are now very glad that you invested early in Captain Sasaki's projects.

Variable Configuration - Which Button Makes This Thing Go? - Wilde's control scheme for the original CRX was...a steering wheel, pedal, brake and clutch. This is not exactly ideal for having other pilots learn how to pilot a giant robot. The cockpit also was rather awkwardly placed. Wilde agrees, and has a few ideas for establishing a template for the cockpit. Compared to the other projects, it's a relatively simple idea.

Excerpts from Variable Configuration video log

Log #1, 1943, 6 April, A.D. 2070

"Well, here we are!" Wilde said as he sat in the driver's seat of the CRX. "It works, but I was kind of controlling it with just the steering wheel, the clutch, the pedals and these-" he gestures to side levers he'd jury-rigged into the dashboard, "-thingies here." He made moving motions with them, all while humming fake 'mechanical' noises, and the stubs of where the shoulder joints would have had arms moved accordingly.

"Of course, this isn't exactly intuitive for people not us. And I know there's some in the engineers who think this just can't be done. So I say this to you unbelievers:

"We reject your reality, and create our own!"

The image cut out, and was replaced with an overlay of the original CRX.

Henry's voice chimes in as his portrait appears in the upper left corner. "So we discovered that standard shop parts can do the job, but they wear out really quickly and break on you. Not conducive for making a vehicle configure when you expect it to several times a day back and forth." The overlay then showed the mechanical insides that is the mess that the original was. "So we're going to replace all of this-" The innards abruptly change to their proposed new parts, "-to this."

Wilde's portrait joined him in the upper right of the screen. "Now, there's one problem with this approach: cars and other vehicles obviously were never designed to configure like this. We had to make noodles out of the CRX-01A to make it work, and it kinda collapsed on us after we were done." A video showing the arms falling off in front of Peters was shown to the side. "So we thought: what if we, y'know, just took out the driver's seat - " the overlay removes the driver's compartment from the rest of the frame, " - and rebuilt it from the ground up to work with a robot frame?"

Henry added, "We think that if we start with the cockpit and make that modular first, then we are going to have a much easier time modifying vehicles for variable configuration. The goal is not to take away anything from the vehicle, just add to it without saddling it with too many extra parts. We'll let you know in the next log what we find."

Log #2, 1138, 8 April, A.D. 2070

"Our first attempt didn't go very well."

A video of a standard EUDF patrol truck was shown as they attempted to have it configure to robotic form. It stood up well enough, but upon the arms attempting to unfold, a horrible screeching noise was heard as the frame literally ripped itself apart.

Wilde continued his analysis, sounding a little embarrassed. "We kinda forgot that we custom built the CRX to do what it did, and we used a lot of cars to do it. We did modify in the parts that we needed to make configuration a thing for your bog standard Coyote patrol truck, but…"

"It didn't handle the stress very well," Henry continued. "But on the bright side, the cockpit actually worked very well." In the scrap heap that was the CRX-02A, the only thing that was not horribly crushed was the driver's compartment and the test dummy inside. "Our little friend inside there got scuffled around a bit, but all things considered, he's in pretty good shape."

"So! Our next test: completely disassemble a Coyote for configuration in mind." An overlay of the standard Coyote was shown in an overlay. "Factory standard, even if you stuff in the fabricated parts we put in? Doesn't really like it. But the good thing about Coyotes is that they're pretty modular." The Coyote's blueprints then split up into several different sections. "So we're gonna take 'em apart, rebuild them, then slap 'em together again like lego blocks."

"In theory this should work," Henry agreed. "But that's why we do these tests now before someone gets hurt operating it."

Log #3, 1427, 15 April, A.D. 2070

"Confirmed! This does in fact work!"

The overlay of the Coyote was displayed again, only this time with all the modular pieces separated and with the new fabricated parts inside of them.

"This is not cheap," Henry said, "And we burnt through some parts getting it right. Then we discovered that even if you got it to stand properly, the parts of the truck it does stand on wasn't meant to be putting pressure on it to begin with. So we took some extra armor plates and welded them on. It even fits right in regular truck mode."

"So! This time, we introduce, the CRX-02B."

A video overlay was shown as the modified Coyote sat in the motor pool. To the casual eye, it looked like a Coyote with the extra armor kit, but nothing unusual. If you snuck this into a convoy somewhere in the world, it would not look out of place.

Logistician: However, to the trained eye, certain parts of it looked...off. A vent here or there that wasn't in its usual place, edges that stuck out where the standard model didn't, and so forth. But otherwise, it would blend in just fine. In fact, it actually managed to stay within conventional maximum dimensions, even if it weighed heavier than the standard model. It could still be airlifted with a Stork-class really easily.

"Now, the second model is made with the Coyote as is, just with our modifications," Henry said. "But we discovered that as long as you can reinforce and modify the cockpit, the core of the configuration, it can handle just about any amount of stress you throw at it. You just have to make sure the rest of it is tough enough to go through with it too. And that's what we did."

"Case in point: look at the first one," Wilde said. Once again, the video of the arms falling off played, only this time pausing at the moment of fracture. "If you see here? We only reinforced what was breaking, not the stuff that you'd want a robot to use on a regular basis. Shoulder joints, fingers, knees; all still using kitbash. So it could configure really quickly, but it'd just fall apart after that." Wilde then giggled slightly in glee. "We fixed that."

The modified Coyote then abruptly burst into motion. The arms immediately unfolded as the torso immediately began shifting to become the 'chest' unit, the arms landed onto the ground as if it were doing a push-up, then immediately pushed itself into a standing upright position. It even had proper (skeletal) hands instead of the crane-game claws from before. The legs then unfolded and went with the momentum, landing with its left foot behind it while using the right as a pivot point. Finally, a drone camera unit sprang up from the top of the new torso, forming the 'eyes and head' of the unit.

The whole process took only four seconds.

"Bad news? We're still seeing stuff break a bit inside," Wilde warned. "It's more consistent than the CRX-01A, but about 40% of the time, something critical breaks when it configures back and forth. For this test, we also took the 'path of least resistance' to configuring it just to see if this works or not, so the inner parts are not all completely armored."

"The good news," Henry finished, "is that at this point we're just troubleshooting this. Now we know what went wrong, we can just work on fixing it."

"Now, I hear you asking: I thought we just asked you to rework the control layout!" Wilde said with a grin on his face. "And we hear you, dear viewers! A: we kinda went overboard, we admit that. This is a breakthrough, so you just kinda roll with the inspiration. But B? We made the first model while still thinking it was a car with legs. That just doesn't work with a full robot. So we had to make sure everything worked with that in mind first!"

An image of the cockpit was shown to the side. "While it's still a Coyote, it works exactly as you'd expect," Henry explained. "You still have a steering wheel, brake, pedal, and so on. If you know how to operate the regular one, this won't be too different." Two levers on the side that were not in the standard model were then highlighted. "But when you flip this?"

The same transformation sequence was then shown again from the inside perspective. The whole sequence was as quick as before, only this time with vertigo-inducing speed from within. It would have been easy then to notice that the dashboard withdrew to be replaced with what looked to be a twin-control stick scheme as the seats shifted ninety degrees upwards to account for the engine block shifting downwards to form a torso that didn't expose the engine block. "We took some inspiration from simulators and video games for ease of access. It's not perfect yet, and it won't be until we get the test pilots to give it a whirl."

"Tune in next month, Sir!" Wilde said cheerfully.

Restoration - Server Bank - That this happens to coincide with an ongoing request from Dr. Ignatov is a happy accident. Before he can even begin to access the data in the server, he requires a rather extensive set of equipment. A combination of older technology that can interface with the data safely, along with more modern equipment to begin establishing a base-wide supercomputer network. Ignatov is a firm believe that you can knock out two vital tasks with a single set of means if you're creative enough.

Dr. Ignatov clearly was struck with whatever brainwave the Terrible Duo had caught.

You were able to get him the list of what he requested easily enough, all supplemented with more modern equipment that he's been asking for since the very beginning of the project. Once it all arrived, he'd drafted his entire team from Novgorod Computing Solutions from whatever maintenance they were originally tasked on in order to start assembling the older equipment. Captain Sasaki was slightly annoyed, but she understood the importance of discovering what was going on underneath.

The technical jargon that Ignatov and his team constantly spout at you whenever you ask for updates goes completely above your head, you admit. You can only conclude that this has become something of a passion project for them, and nothing short of a meteor falling on their heads is going to distract them. All you can really tell without seeing something tangible is that the servers they discovered are not even close to standard factory models, and held some kind of secret to miniaturizing...something. You honestly weren't sure.

That being said, one tangible benefit to all this? The beginnings of a supercomputer network using modern parts has definitely started underground, a step towards Ignatov's original vision when you recruited him. His team is already starting to slowly draw connection lines from where the hub will be throughout all of campus. Nothing is online now, but Ignatov makes it clear to you that all the key components of the Super Robot development team is going to benefit greatly from this when the complex is complete.

On a slightly unrelated note, the air conditioning was also restored underground.

Science – Biology Lab – Sam is focused on developing the basics on ESP Theory, but that doesn't mean the kaiju sample should remain neglected. Investing in the restoration of the biology labs on campus will finally allow you to put the sample in a safer area and begin unlocking its secrets. Biology Lab Grounds

"Heheh. Kaiju Biotech in the ol' Biology Department," Sam chuckles as he stands next to you. "Appropriate."

"Mm." You remain noncommittal about it. "I'm just happy we're starting something on it. It's been nearly a year since I captured the damn thing."

"Oh, right, that was you at Pusan, wasn't it?" he asks. "Anyway." Behind you both are the familiar sounds of growling machinery and earthmoving equipment. For whatever reason, the kaiju had been very thorough when he rampaged through campus.

Which meant that half of the Biology Department's building was wrecked, the other relatively intact, if dusty.

The refrigeration unit, somehow, has been performing admirably well. You wouldn't be surprised if the thing caught a little bit of freezer-burn, but you aren't planning on eating it.

And you were making sure that no one in Sam's crazy staff would even try.

"You said you found something on this?" you ask.

"Oh, yeah," Sam says. He actually winces slightly. "So, check this out." The refrigeration unit in question is still connected by large, bulky cables to the power station and is covered in tarp and camouflage netting. "I've had some of my boys and girls keep tabs on the sample while we were poking away with ESP. Just to see if freezing really does just completely render it inert."

"And?" you ask.

"...not completely."

That was...not the answer you were expecting. "It's still active?" you demand.

"Thankfully, not yet it's not," Sam says with some relief. "But it's definitely adjusting to the cold. Almost like it's just trying to make itself more cozy while it's in there, not 'regenerate into a brand new kaiju and eat the university for breakfast' activity."

You inwardly sigh a breath of relief. "But how can you tell?" you ask.

"Easy. Every so often, we open up the unit and take a sample from the scales," he explains. The holoprojector he's so fond of displays the sample from later December, a few weeks before you both met. "This was right around when we just got the sample," he explains. A small video of a microscope sample is shown. "That was when it was still frozen." The cells, which look utterly alien to you, are practically stationary and barely moving. "Still kind of active, but not really doing much. Now this is when we heated up that tiny sample." The organisms inside are now moving quite agitatedly. "So at the time we concluded that it was an adaptable thing, but we didn't have the resources to pay too close attention to it. That, and it didn't exactly have anything to disintegrate like most kaiju bits do."

The next sets of videos then show on a week by week basis up to today. Progressively, the cells are moving more quickly, more fluidly, and more naturally. "You can tell that the cells are trying to do what they would normally do and decompose the scale and flesh beneath it since it lacks a proper body to draw support from. But it can't do that, so it's just trying to adjust to the cold so it's ready to do its thing for whenever it thaws out. So it's going to stay nice and frozen until we damn well feel like warming it up. Which I don't." You nod in agreement; no sense in losing your only kaiju sample. "So my initial thoughts on this before the facility is properly built is this. I don't see us making a one-to-one perfect copy of Sheol's monsters. What I do see happening is augmenting whatever the Engineers cook up with organs and muscle we can grow from this thing."

"...you think you can do that with just the scales?" you ask incredulously.

"Not just the scales, the skin and the blood still inside," Sam corrects you. "And the microscope tests we've seen show that this stuff can adjust to just about anything you want it to be. Sheol just wanted it to be giant monsters that kills lots of people for no damn good reason." He shakes his head. "Damn nonsense is what it is. Creating a giant monster is good science. Having said monster rampage around the world just because some old professor probably gave him an F on his paper? And wanting to rule the world? That's just murder."

"...and the chance to punch those monsters in the face is good science?" you ask.

"Nope. Using his own creations to create even better machines than his is good science. Using those machines to punch his kaiju in the face? That's just karma."

ESP - Where in the World? - Now that the testing of all possible candidates is underway, Sam reckons to run an additional study alongside the broadcast tests. If he can find consistent data (the best kind of data!) in his current test subjects, finding future pilots is going to become much simpler. "Good news first, test subjects: we have a good idea of what gives psychic powers!" Sam cheerfully notes over the intercom as you walk into the lab. "Works like a muscle; some people are born with better ones than others, but the longer you work at it, the better potential it's going to be. The bad news: it's highly unlikely anyone is going to set things on fire or read anyone's minds."

You hear an audible groan of disappointment from all the test subjects.

"I know, I know, sad news. But buck up! You've just contributed a head start in this great field of Science!"

"SCIENCE!" the usual crowd roars.

"So now that we've established that, we're going to cook up ways to make use of the psychic potential you do have, and you're gonna test it! This is Sam, we're done here."

It's not long before you are admitted into his office. "Like a muscle?" you ask with some curiosity.

"Just so!" A diagram of the mutations are displayed to you. "Turns out that some people had that mutation like that because they tend to think in specific and intense ways. Uses literally a lot of brainpower that leaves you drained, kind of like a crap day at work. But like I said, it's very unlikely that we're going to see comic book manifestations of psychic powers for at least a few generations. We're too early in as a species for that."

"So what does this mean for the Super Robot?" you ask.

Broadcasting Live - Ongoing Report

"How about those main tests?" you ask.

"Getting there," he says. "Going in line with what we discovered about increasing psychic potential, it helps explain how our test candidates are improving."

A variety of videos display showing test subjects operating all kinds of machinery. "The simplest is just operating a servo arm, kind of like what you saw last month," he explains. "It's the easiest to start people on, since it just requires them to move an arm with their minds. The only hazard is smacking someone in the face."

At that moment, another researcher in one of the videos is done in with just that mistake.

"Next," he continues on, not paying it closer attention, "are more complicated things. Such as RC cars, flying drones, and computer interfaces." Additional videos of the candidates operating those machines, all with greatly varying degrees of success, are shown. "Turns out, the biggest obstacle is that a lot of candidates keep saying that split perspective is a bit of a problem. But they're making some headway on it. Some have said that it's easier to think of the machine as just an extra body part you move with a limb you never knew you had. Others say they just imagine that's how the machine would work, and the machine rolls with it if it can. We're still nailing down what the best perspective is, or if there even is one."

One specific video shows one candidate, and what look to be model RC tanks.

Entire army groups of them, on opposing sides.

All moving independently and 'firing' at each other.

"...is that-?"

"The Battle of Kursk from World War II, yeah." Sam also is slightly puzzled. "He's from the second group I just talked about; he's apparently a big history guy, so he's narrating how the fight actually went down, if you just abstract it to tanks. He can't do this for any more than ten minutes, but that's the biggest success we've had all month. I'm suspecting he's operating on a more macro-level system of control that he justifies as a history narration, but I don't know enough just yet."

"...keep me informed," you say quietly. "We don't just ignore talent like this."

Well, you've all set lots of things into motion. Next update will be either tomorrow or Tuesday, depending.

So as a quick note, this is what I'm seeing: You have a very rudimentary robotic frame that can transform, so long as you custom build the insides to make it work. Wilde and Henry just wanted to rework the controls, but they discovered that the controls can't exactly work until the rest of the frame does, so...

Going to stay quiet on the server bank, but that critical roll is an even bigger boon than you quite realize. Given a few more turns, you'll understand why.

As for Science, well...there's really only one thing I CAN say.

Hope you're all enjoying this. I just lost a good chunk of the day typing this, and I have no regrets about it!

...Screw it, OMAKE TIME!
"So Lucy Renais, that is your name correct?"
"Correct."
"You uh, having a bit of trouble with that servo arm?"
"No."
"You sure? You're not moving it nearly as...energetically as some of the other canidates do."
"I'm trying to be certain I understand what precisely I'm doing. It's...Strange."
"Can you elaborate."
"Yes."
"Errm..."
"The first time I attempted to control this machine, I assumed it had two motorized servos in it's construction-the obvious elbow and rotary joint where it's 'shoulder' would be. However, roughly 13 minutes into my third session I discovered the claw to have a wrist and-That right there. I keep calling it Elbow and shoulder and wrist joints, instead of thinking of it in terms of what the machine's construction actually is. A task made considerably more difficult by your incessant questions!"
"Apologies, just making sure you're not running into any problems or having difficulties at this early stage. Some people just aren't good at this."
"Shut. Up."
"Hunh? Oh! Sorry about that! I didn't mean to imply-"
"I SAID SHUT UP!"
*CLONK*
As Lucy rounded on the researcher, the arm swung around and clocked him right in the face, dropping him to the floor.
"Jeffery talking too much again?"
"Yes...I'll be moving on to the RC cars now I think. Given that last exertion felt less like I was controlling that servo arm and more like it was my arm."

World Report: Highlights
News Update

Kausen Raids Lowered. Internal Conflict?

A recent trend has puzzled EUDF analysts. Ever since January, the number of Kausen raids launching attacks on merchant convoys and energy production centers has lowered by approximately 30%. The raids still take place, and the EUDF is yet to engage them in open combat as they vacate the attack sites with their ill-gotten gains. But the fact remains: attacks have lessened in number.

Some reports even that attack sites, primarily focused in the North American District, do not result in any theft of refined energy at all. Though relatively rare, battlefield forensics note scorch marks and destroyed structures that are consistent with infantry tactics on a squad level, albeit on the large scale and size more fitting to a smaller kaiju. As neither the Yukimura Institute nor Mander Security Solutions operate in North America, this could potentially be an unidentified Super Robot. Other analysts, however, suggest that the Kausen are facing internal divisions that have spilled into open conflict.

There is simply not enough evidence to conclude one way or another, but authorities are paying especially close attention to Kausen raid sites.

Mercury V Stands Defiant

In a spectacular clash of titans, George Sheol's latest menace was repulsed after a lengthy duel by Mercury V. The large, black-armored giant has become more and more of a recent sight as additional kaiju arise to menace the wider Pacific. This latest set-piece battle was fought at the outer edges of Shanghai, and the People's Assembly have bestowed the title of "Black Guardian of the North" to Mercury V in thanks.

Interestingly for observers, Mercury V was seen projecting enormous blasts of frost from its chest in an effort to immobilize the kaiju. Ultimately Mercury V was unable to completely destroy the kaiju, but it was severely wounded and was projected to not be a significant threat for some time. Dr. Yukimura was unavailable for comment.

The citizens of Shanghai, certainly, are grateful for the presence of Mercury V.

Westphalian Giant Slain by Valiant

It is perhaps a sign of things to come that the Westphalian terrorists have resorted to greater weapons of war and destruction. A brutish mechanical giant, large as the average European District's apartment building, began rampaging through the city of Vienna. This was preceded by a series of bombings taking place along key roads, hampering first responders from reacting in time.

Mander Security Solutions, on station to safeguard a local politician's speech rally from such an event, cooperated with local law enforcement and deployed the Valiant. In a show of dazzling light and electric power, all components of the Valiant were launched into the air and reassembled itself before coming to land in front of the mechanical monster. Bystanders have likened it to the legendary duel between David and Goliath, with David (Valiant) still emerging victorious.

Brigadier General Louis Peters' Modernization Program

"It is no secret that the EUDF is behind in weapons technology," she has stated on record, "But now is not the time to cast about blame. As Commanding General of Research and Development, I have enacted steps to make sure our forces in uniform have what they need to face the latest threats to the Union."

Of particular interest to this publication and many political observers of the Defense Force, is the creation of the so-called "Defense Force Research Institute (DFRI)." When asked to comment on the DFRI, BG Peters replied, "It is one of many focus groups I have established, and I am proud of each of them for their diligence and hard work. But whereas the other groups are to upgrade the conventional and the known, the DFRI is pushing technology towards its frontier. They are doing so as we speak with the greatest and brightest minds in their fields. I fully expect to be able to unveil new breakthroughs in a few months' time."

When asked for a comment about the Super Robots, she was quoted as saying, "I thank the Almighty for what they do each and every day. Though they cannot be everywhere at once, I daresay that their like will be a critical factor in fighting the threats against us."

Commandant's Office

"You requested to see me, Sir?" Captain Sasaki asks as she enters the office.

You idly gesture for her to have a seat, much in a similar way Peters had done to both of you back in January. "Yes, I did," you agree. "Just wanted to get your opinion on how things are going."

"They are going...much better than I expected," Sasaki admits. "I did not put much faith in the idea of creating our own Super Robot, even with all of the experts in place."

You nod; it's about what you expected her reaction to be. But this conversation serves another purpose. "Has that changed?" you ask gently.
"Not entirely," she says. "Most of our 'experts' are certifiably insane."

You don't argue against this.

"Their staffs are similarly afflicted with the same madness."

Also entirely true.

"And we still have so much left to go," she says. Staring directly at you, she says, "Very few people outside of our command structure have any faith at all in this project. You must already be aware that I continue to pass on reports to General Armistead."

"That was the price Brigadier Peters paid for his support," you say. You don't ask if this is true, you simply state it. You know a bit of how this game is played.

"Yes."

"If you're at liberty to answer," you say, "What do you say about us recently, and what does he think?"

"Unexpected breakthroughs, inspiration from madness, and intrigued confusion, respectively," comes the response.

You nod in satisfaction. "Look," you say bluntly. "I understand it's a political game. And I know we're getting really close to a breakthrough of some kind. Maybe not the kind that produces a Super Robot immediately, but Wilde and Henry are ready to hand over some of the CRXs to your pilots for testing." You manage a wry smile. "If they actually work out? I'll clear it with BG Peters, but we'll make sure he gets first crack at them." You tilt your head as you think on that. "I'm not sure what an Aerial Command wants with ground vehicles, but…"

"You trust too readily," Sasaki manages to say. She looks almost indignant. Almost. "As a commander, you must be more wary of outside agents."

"I wouldn't count on you staying that way for too long," you shrug. "After all, I'm still going to need a tactical officer in charge of when the Super Robot's finally ready for battle." You sigh. "I give you your earned credibility for good, reliable work. It's...not exactly trust, but I know where you stand. Lots of people here, though, trust you. Don't do anything to lose that trust."

You then wince as you hear an ungodly clattering of spare parts falling with great force. It is immediately overtaken by boisterous laughing from a certain Engineer Lieutenant.

"...that, and you're one of the best people I've got to herd this group of cats," you sigh.

"I could have done without the reminder, Sir," Sasaki says with a similar sigh.

You both get to work riding herd on said group of cats.

Captain Sasaki seems to be in a somewhat bemused state. Though not openly dismissive of the Super Robot project except behind closed doors, she seems to realize the sheer energy and enthusiasm that is gripping all the personnel on campus. But she's also made it clear to you that there are more threats out there. If you give her the resources, she will work to ensure that they remain irrelevant to your progress. And in the meantime, there's always infrastructure to improve if you think the resources can be spared.

LOCKED - Candidate Observation – ESP – Captain Sasaki seems pleased enough that the candidates she sent last month are helping. But a problem many scientists have is that they tend to study the principles of their field in a vacuum. This is an ideal time to attach Defense Force observers along with the research staff to see how you can incorporate ESP control into a tangible benefit.

[] Field Testing - CRX-02C - Good to their word, Wilde and Henry have prepared a test prototype for Captain Sasaki's pilots. This comes at a good time, as they are practically going stir-crazy. She fully plans on letting the pilots 'test the absolute limit of the Engineers' creations.' Durability, strength, reliability, agility - everything an operator could possibly want from a configured vehicle. The Engineers, for their part, are more than happy to provide.

The creation of dedicated landing facilities for vertical landing vehicles is something to consider, especially considering that the Gagarin makes a lot of trips between here and Unity Station. Creating a dedicated landing pad would perhaps enable more resources to come in.

Though not particularly inspired this time, everyone in the Engineers seem to recognize that they're on the cusp of something big. Variable Configuration has been proven valid, Ignatov is getting closer to unlocking the secrets of the pre-Unification servers...the world's looking up for Engineering! Time to keep it going!

LOCKED - Restoration - Server Bank - That this happens to coincide with an ongoing request from Dr. Ignatov is a happy accident. Before he can even begin to access the data in the server, he requires a rather extensive set of equipment. A combination of older technology that can interface with the data safely, along with more modern equipment to begin establishing a base-wide supercomputer network. Sam's department are excited. They have every right to be; by the end of the month, Sam is predicting that the possibilities are going to open up like a floodgate. Which will then usher in the dual horrors of unexplored psychic energy and unknown science into a strange dystopic revolutionary government, and-oh, sorry, he was still gushing about the movie he was watching. Thrilling stuff.

Anyway.

He doesn't have a whole lot of options, simply because so much of his staff is already working on ESP. But he's pretty confident that by next month, he and the Engineers can team up to start on exploring man-machine interfaces.

LOCKED - ESP - Where in the World? - Now that the testing of all possible candidates is underway, Sam reckons to run an additional study alongside the broadcast tests. "...no, Sam," Sasaki said patiently as she sat at her desk, signing off on another memorandum. "They are not there to 'meddle' with your experiments." She paused as she shifted the document aside, listening at length to another tirade from the irascible man. "Not at all, Sam. The efforts of you and your team are admirable. And you know Major Devin is appreciative of your work. But we need to establish guidelines."

Another lengthy tirade erupted from the phone. Sasaki rolled her eyes as an aide passed her several different reports. "Sam, no. I understand that you would be able to push theoretical limits. But we need to remain task-focused. My officers are 'poking their noses in' as you keep saying so often for a reason." Another quick tirade. Sasaki was becoming quite efficient at catching the pertinent details while filtering out almost everything else. She idly noticed that the aide had made himself scarce during all this.

"They are only doing what they are so we may establish guidelines. 'Do not operate psychic-enhancing equipment for lengthy periods of time,' 'do not operate psychic-enhancing machinery while drunk or distracted.' If we do not establish this now, we will see much more grief when it comes to creating the man-machine interface."

Another period of speech passed. "Very well then. I look forward to seeing the results at the end of the month. Good night." She finally hung up the phone, and then took the chance to massage her temples. "That man is so irritating," she grumbled as she finally turned her full attention to the reports she was giving.

Turning her attention to the several page report, she glimpsed over it quickly. Pausing only to sip from the cooling cup of green tea on her desk. It was from one of Lieutenant Wilde's compatriots from the combat engineers. Within was the plan to reinforce the current system of walls they had established a few months prior.

She pauses as she thinks back to the earliest days of the Institute. Despite working well enough together, she expected to be sidelined at any given opportunity, especially from decisions concerning the Super Robot development plan. Yet Devin had not only disregarded her known affiliations to General Armistead - a known and vocal critic of the Super Robot idea - but had fully embraced her ideas of incredibly early security measures. A gesture that was already paying for itself with possible spies outside of the campus grounds.

She honestly was unsure of what to make of that. Only that Major Devin was a fair man, and incredibly tolerant and patient. Traits which were in high demand, given the eccentricities of the staff.

Turning her attention back to the plans, she noted with approval that the primary focus was first to fully reinforce the existing walls around the critical infrastructure. It left plenty of space for fixed defenses, road blocks and more. While that was completing, stakes would be placed to mark outer perimeter barricades. This itself would not be anything fancy; concrete walls with barbed wire laced through them to discourage any intruders from coming in, with guard posts placed every few sections.

She signed off on the order, along with authorizations to set aside the requested materials, and set it to the side before moving on to the next set of reports.

Will conclude in two turns.

Speaking of spies…

The patrols had already begun to narrow down what looked to be the favored vantage spots of these 'campers.' It was quickly determined that these individuals were somewhat jittery, as any time something with the EUDF logo - anyone belonging to the campus' forces - came near enough, they would immediately pick up and move within tens of minutes. To Haruko, that was suggesting that these were not the product of a dedicated operation. She had stationed plenty of communications monitoring around the areas the observers favored, and no transmissions were going in or leaving. So that meant they were dispatched to take notes.

The fact that they kept coming as close as they could to the campus even when evading the patrols meant that they had more than just casual curiosity. Any excuse for tourists gawking at a military facility was right out.

Haruko decided she'd have the patrols keep watch for one more month. Perhaps they would become frightened into making a foolish mistake.

When they did, she would be waiting.

The last report she had on hand was regarding the agents she dispatched to the wider world.

Major Devin had been somewhat askance of this approach. But he allowed himself to be persuaded when Haruko pointed out that they were effectively operating within an isolated bubble. A storm was raging all around them, while they remained relatively safe and ignoration.

Major Devin agreed this would not do, and authorized her to send her brightest on a fact-finding mission. Though he did raise an eyebrow at how she had given her agents rather fanciful callsigns.

She refused to budge on the names.

'Wallflower' had decided to journey towards the most obvious area - the site of a kaiju attack. Shanghai had been recently attacked, but the arrival of Mercury V had prevented it from actually breaching the city limits. As widely broadcasted as that was, however, the Defense Naval and Air Forces, along with the People's Liberation Army's Navy, very likely had much more interesting footage. Wallflower was convinced that he could persuade the authorities to lend them a copy of the footage while he also took a ship to scan the battle site.

'Rotterdam' paid a visit to Vienna. For similar reasons to Wallflower's, Rotterdam was after the authorities' footage of Valiant's duel against the metal giant. More than Valiant itself, however, Rotterdam was intrigued by the giant metal monstrosity the Westphalians had deployed, along with all the terror attacks that preceded its arrival. On a forensics mission, Rotterdam was not only after data from the mechanical assets the Westphalians deployed, but the timing and methods of their on-foot attackers.

'Rockefeller' had the most difficult assignment. Though the Kausen in North America continued to attack energy producers, successful attacks were actually on the decline. Ground Defense Force authorities were also reporting sites around potential raid targets with scorch marks and the signs of pitched battle, if the participants were giant-sized. Rockefeller was undaunted in her reports, however; if the Kausen left anything behind, she was determined to find it.

Haruko nodded, stifling a yawn as she noticed she had already spent an hour perusing the reports. They would find a way.

Haruko yawned one more time, before simply glimpsing over the request Dr. Ignatov had submitted to her. Unlike Major Devin, Dr. Ignatov was being somewhat cagey over what he actually expected to find inside of that complex. Much like the Commandant, Haruko was somewhat alarmed to find that there was a pre-Unification complex beneath their feet this whole time.

This was something she neglected to inform General Armistead on. She could appreciate the sensitive nature of what could be inside, and acted accordingly.

She had already approved it before. She'd rather know sooner than later what was actually in there.

NOW she could call it a night. Unless there were Separatists marching onto the Institute, she was determined not to wake up until at least noon.

"So, it turns out," Wilde said with a frown on his face, "They forgot some things down here." The camera was showing him with a hardhat affixed to his head. Held in thick rubber gloves was what looked to be unmarked cases of chemicals. "Just for the record, I refuse to open any of this until we get Sam's guys to come check it out."

"It looks like they sometimes conducted chemical mixture tests on lab animals in here," Henry added, a look of mild disgust on his face. "Judging from how many chemicals we're finding down here, and how many glass cases with dead animals are here as well."

The camera looked to pan behind their shoulders, but Wilde shook his head and held up a hand. "Don't. There's some not so great stuff back there." The cameraman conceded the point and settled back onto them.

"But with that said, we are making good progress on cleaning the lab up," Henry said. "Dr. Carlson should have plenty of space to set up a Biotech lab here. This month we're just cleaning up the worst of the mess left behind by the faculty before we wire in power and the usual services."

"I don't see anything worthwhile that they did down here," Wilde grumbles. "Hey, doc? If you're watching this, I hope you make better use of this place than the guys who were here before you. There's no good science down here as far as I can tell."

"Good news or bad news first?"

Sam certainly wasn't beating around the bush today. "I have a feeling the good news starts first this time?" you ask wryly.

"Eh," Sam says as he makes a waving motion with his hand. "Close enough. Good news then! I've got enough data to start picking out pilots consistently!"

You raise an eyebrow. "How can you tell?"

"Simple: how much damned effort it takes to grow psychic potential!" The wall behind his desk illuminates with charts from the past few months. The chart arrows' progression paths are all over the place. "Simply put: you're going to get schmucks who are going to take months or years to grow any significant potential. They can do it, sure, but you're probably better off finding someone who's got a natural head start over 'em."

"So how can you tell either way?" you ask.

He gestures to a mockup of the psychic enhancement helmets. "By now we've got a fair shake on what we're looking for. We use this to send signals that provoke a response from the psychic emitters in their brains. Just a blanket signal, nothing specific. Depending on how much potential they have, they reactively send a ping back to the helmet. We measure that signal strength, and then we do it again a few more times and average out the responses." He shrugs. "It's honestly pretty consistent, though you get your usual outliers."

You nod. At least you have a predictable way to find the candidates you're looking for.

In theory.

You gesture towards the arrows on the higher spectrum. "Lay it out for me. What about those who already have a lot of potential? Do they plateau, or keep going?"

"Mostly plateau. They're still going to get better, but at that point you're looking at diminishing returns. And I'm assuming you're going to want the best pilots."

"Nothing but," you agree. "Which is why I'm curious about those who don't have much potential to start with. Wouldn't they plateau at a higher level?"

"We think so?" He scratches his head. "But more often than not, you're looking at people who struggle to get the basics down. After they do, they get excited over the new control they have, and then they go and punch my researchers in the face with servo arms. Funny the first few times, but not always great for research."

"But you think if given time you could train them up?" you probe.

"We could," Sam admits, "But at this point, I've figured out how the process works. If you want someone to train them to get those kinds of results, I'm thinking Captain Sasaki could find people who could do that a hell of a lot better than we could. Especially for what you're trying to get out of them." He shrugs again. "Other good news: we have enough data to start looking into a man-machine interface." Before you can interject, he holds up a hand. "Now the bad news: I don't have it just yet. This is going to be a tricky process, so I am not going to try and rush this. But I've got enough of a handle on it that I'm feeling pretty good about trying. Just don't rush me, is all I'm asking"

You shrug. "More than fair," you say. "I don't want to see machines or brains exploding either." You pause as you think about something you saw last month. "On another note," you ask, "I recall there was a particularly impressive candidate from earlier."

"Oh, the tank guy." A video of the young man manipulating all the tanks just from his helmet displays on the wall. "So I took another look at this test candidate. First Lieutenant Richard Callaghan. When I asked him about how he was doing all that, he didn't have a good answer. I mentioned to you that he just sorta abstracts the tiny details and just rolls with it. Which got me thinking."

Another video replaces it, only now with Callaghan seated in front of numerous electronic systems. "So I tried another tack with 'im. I didn't explain a damn about what the consoles did specifically. Just told him that they had something to do with assembling a rover. Normally this is a test I give to a group of test subjects." You see Callaghan's face scrunch up in a face of concentration as he apparently taps into the machines through his helmet.

And before your eyes, all the consoles are immediately operating by themselves with no haptic input from Callaghan. All the manipulator arms are at least trying to assemble the rover, though some are clearly getting in each other's way. He is able to maintain this process for another twenty minutes, with half of the rover built, before Sam puts a cut to the video.

"Proved a point I had. He just needs to know the outline of how something works, and the brain waves abstract the details. They won't do a great job of it, but it lets him handle the wider picture." Another picture of his direction of the tank battles appears again. "He doesn't know how the RC tanks works, but he knows how tanks work, and how the battle went. So he sent out that signal, and the brain waves abstracted the rest." Another picture of him appears in front of the consoles. "And after I explained to him what the general idea was, the second runthrough went a lot better."

Sam looks at you. "Honestly, you probably have a good pilot candidate right there."

"Now all he needs is a man-machine interface," you muse as you study the pictures again.

Zaealix: Lucy Renais, ESP Logs #2
"Jeffery! Just the man I wanted to see!"
"Really? I thought I annoyed you."
"That was because I was still performing my personal research. Today however, I am prepared to present a discovery of mine! If you would proceed to the Remote Control Cars, I will demonstrate for you!"
She then leads Jeffery over to the RC area, where a simple obstacle course is prepared.
"Now then, you should remember what I was talking about last time with my Paradigm shifting away from an understanding based upon observations of the servos to...I would describe it as an instinctual control based upon my control of my own natural arms?"
"Correct."
"THIS TIME However I've actually managed to maintain my original Paradigm, based upon my own experience as an automobile driver, the 'tiny driver', the naming for which you'll understand in a moment!"
Lucy put a hand on top of her head, and then intently lowered it until it was a bit over the RC car's top, before flipping her hand over and tilting it and waiting a few moments.
"And now that the eccentric ritual component of the tiny driver is seen to, now to complete it, this chair, so I can simulate the experience of being the driver."
"That's quite a bit of work you're putting into this thing, isn't it?"
"Yes, it's essential really, as you know, my prior attempt to form a paradigm was overwhelmed by the more intuitive paradigm of seeing the servo arm I was manipulating as simple some disembodied third arm. But if I had something to 'anchor' my perspective, I can maintain it. Now for the driving!"
She then sits down in the chair, and true to her words, holds her arms out, clearly holding an imaginary wheel, and lifting her right foot as if resting them on the pedals of a car. Lucy 'taps' the wheel three times, then drops an arm and grabs an imaginary lever and pulling it back.
"And now that it's in drive, here we go!"
The car starts and goes forward. Lucy for her part moves as if she's inside the car, driving it herself, the only real break in her acting being her eyes being trained on the car's position in the course, instead of looking forward. Otherwise she rotates the wheel and presses down on the pedals as a real driver would.
Notably, due to Lucy's acting, the RC's car's reactions seem perhaps somewhat slowed, but it does move through the course with clear deliberation in every move, weaving around the obstacles in the first part, moving through the tunnel with no problems, and managing speed properly over the hills.
Once she's completed a lap, Lucy adjusts what Jeffery has now figured out to be the gearshift, the car rolls to a stop, and then Lucy stands up, walks over to the car, and puts her hand right above the top of the RC, before raising it up to the top of her head and then doing a spin into a curtsy.
"And that's the 'tiny driver' paradigm. Now for the second paradigm. 'Possession.' If the Tiny driver operates based upon the experience of being a driver within the car, Possession draws it's roots from my experiences with the servo arms-of imagining the control of the car as manipulating my own body. This one understandably breaks down somewhat when dealing with a vehicle but it does have it's advantages compared to the 'tiny driver'."
Lucy then re-connects to the car, this time with no real preparation.
"Possession is simple. No need for ritual preparations to make it work. But this is where I start to truly begin to shine."
The car starts gently rolling forward...considerably slower then before.
"...Wait those cars just have three settings. Go, not go, and stop. We didn't bother setting you guys up with granular controls!"
"Exactly! Now let's rock!"
And then it zips off straight ahead. while it does widely arc around the first two obstacles, when it comes to the tunnel the car slams right into the wall, breaking apart on impact.
"...The trade off of possession is I don't always drive with needed precision to get around obstacles due to having to mind and manually control the engine output myself."
"I see...Well, that's an interesting difference but I think I like the 'tiny driver' better, given our ultimate goal, Miss Renais."
"Right...A psychic pilot for a Super Robot, capable of fighting the Kaiju...I know I'm not going to be able to float like Jake does. I can't control a tank army like Lieutenant Callaghan. I'm...Not going to get to be extra-special psychic Lucy outside of this testing facility. I'm too early for that. But what I can do, is do my part so that the next generation has that foundation to improve upon. And maybe, if I am particularly fortuitous... I'll get to watch my grandchildren play with the psychic powers all us volunteers came here hoping to find."

Yeah, I'll probably put a third entry in of Lucy working with some of the other toys. I have a fun little capstone to finish off her story, though admittedly I kind of screwed up-I imagined Lucy moving freely with a non-plugged in helmet here, thinking the design allowed for that, rather then some sort of techno-throne with a helmet-connection to the rest of the thing.

Engineering Report: I have no idea how to log this what-?
1527, 26 May, A.D. 2070
'The Lair', Engineering Bay

You were honestly joking when you quipped about this place feeling more like a supervillain's lair than an institute of higher learning. But the more you find, the more you think it's not entirely out of place. Whoever owned this university before clearly was up to something he wanted hidden.

So the questions remain: who the hell was this fellow, and what was his end goal? You're still mulling over that question even as you arrive at the underground 'lair.'

You also take a valuable and critical moment of your time to slap a palm against your face as you see a cheerful sign plastered above the entrance.

"LAIR OF THE GREAT AND POWERFUL IGNATOV"
"Staff and Children admitted for free"

For God's sake, Wilde. Some nearby Soldiers, seeing your reaction, quietly have the sign taken down as you walk into the room.

The impression of a supervillain lair only increases when you see the remodeled server banks. A few steps below you, rows of refurbished servers line the walls and some of the walkways, all blinking and buzzing with that strange electronic nothingness that surrounds this sort of machinery. Sparks of electricity from cables not fully refurbished fly and hiss in the ceiling every so often, adding a strange otherworldliness to the otherwise solidly-lit area. Technicians in red work suits walk up and down, conferring with each other over this readout or that command line that appears on screens mounted to workstations, and generally getting in each others' way while somehow remaining productive.

And standing above them all is Ignatov, typing away furiously at the rather massive workstation on the dais above the servers. As you walk up to him, you muse that this almost reminds you of the bridge of a science fiction ship of the line. You think about making a purpose-built version of it when the Super Robot is finally ready, something to help Captain Sasaki monitor the flow of battle.

Not just because you think the idea is cool. Of course not. You would not appropriate taxpayer money for such a frivolous thing.

Coughing at your own thoughts, you also attract the good doctor's attention. "Major," his voice rumbles as he turns his attention back to the station. "You are just in time."

Not everyone could make it to this event. Wilde and Henry are still deep in the Biology labs digging out whatever else the previous tenants had left behind. Sasaki was conducting analyses of the potential spies out there, and often worked best alone and focused.

The only other staff member here, surprisingly, was Sam. You just accepted that he was here and moved on. Sam would do what he always did.

"I'll admit I don't get computers all that much," Sam says as he looks over the rows of machines stuffed into the room, "Just enough to get them working, just enough to fit them into the science. But I usually get experts for that sort of thing."

"Then it is good that I am a co-worker, yes?" Ignatov grunts as he jabs at the Enter key with a sense of finality. "There." The normally placid screen of the OS - as it would have appeared forty years ago or so - immediately went berserk with pop-ups and command prompts, but Ignatov didn't seem alarmed. "I have reactivated the server, and am slowly integrating it into a localized supercomputer network. Its reach only extends to this floor and the refurbished servers you acquired for me. If it is a malicious sort of code, all we lose are older pieces of equipment."

"You really think we could lose everything that quickly?" Sam asks, eyebrow raised. "I thought viruses got self-contained these days."

You shake your head. "Ignatov asked me to get these specifically," you note. "Not the first time comms has asked me to find this sort of thing." Jabbing a thumb towards the servers, you say, "Something to do with older operating systems being really finicky?"

"Close," Ignatov says. "Modern operating systems are leagues beyond the early twenty-first century's. And we still complain about them, so clearly we haven't done everything right. The ones from the earliest days were apparently like an ecosystem than an information network. They clearly messed up much more than we ever did."

"So why set all this up then?" Sam asks. "If you think it's going to break free of the main computer and all."

"As a test of sorts. I want to see how it functions in a controlled environment."

You nod. "How soon until we-?"

You never get to finish asking your question, as the screen immediately goes utterly still. Then in an instant, all the windows and command prompts disappear, followed very shortly by the operating system also practically disintegrating from view. You hear cries of alarm and shock from the workers below you as the sequence is repeated all along the server lines.

"...older operating systems, huh?" Sam says quietly. He actually looks impressed.

You turn quickly to Ignatov. "You ripped out all broadcasting?" you ask.

"Cable only," he assures you, though his gaze remains locked onto the screen. "Whatever is enabling this course of events is not leaving without my say-so." He attempts to insert a few command prompts, including key combinations that appear utterly meaningless to you, before peering over the dais. Rapidfire Russian is echoed back and forth between Ignatov and the workers.

Whatever they were attempting to communicate, he manages to miss the first new change. You see a series of flashing words flow across the screen at blinding speed. "Doctor," you say even as the words seem to be even changing languages on the fly.

Ignatov turns back towards the screen. To his credit, he does not gape or stand still in shock like you and Sam. He immediately begins re-entering command prompts, all the while issuing orders rapidly to his team through a radio. Sam looks like he's tempted to ask what's going on, but you hold up a hand and forestall that. You'd rather not have Ignatov be distracted by...whatever this was.

"This is similar to an older malicious code language from the Unification Wars," Ignatov says abruptly. Still not tearing his attention away from the screen, he adds, "But it's all wrong. It's not attempting to seize control of the system at all. It's...trying to interface with it, but it's as if it has no idea what to do."

"I've had those kinds of mornings," Sam says. "You wake up, you have no idea what's going on, and you just kind of flail around until you smack someone in the face."

"I'd hate to have your mornings," you say dryly. Before you can say anything else, however, the shifting language all disappears.

Only to be replaced with one word:

Hello?
There is a pause, before the word disappears, and is replaced with:

Who are you? Where is this?

You, Ignatov and Sam can do nothing but stare. "What," you demand.

"I...am unsure of what to say," Ignatov admits.

"How about saying hello back?" Sam asks mildly. You both stare at him. "What?"

For lack of another option, you simply shrug and nod at Ignatov. He begins typing.

Hello. We are the Earth Union. Who are you?

Hello Earthunion. File name is AutoCopy(24)instigationprot.

"...ask some questions," you say quietly. Ignatov looks at you inquiringly. "You're the expert. You know what and how to ask."

Please specify run time parameters.

No specific run time command exists-ERROREDITORPATHNOL0NGERval1D-

Cancel query.

ERRORN0l-Canceled query. Thank you.

"...fascinating," Ignatov manages to say. Looking at additional prompts along the other monitors below, he raises an eyebrow. "Whatever this is, it is already integrating into the wider system." He pauses to listen to the radio as it crackles. "...and attempting to create a run time command script from nothing..."

Unable to detect operating system. Attempting to establish system efficiencies. WARNING: systems limited to Hub1A, Hub1B...pending...through Hub 9Z. Efficiencies will be limited to these servers. May I do this, please?
You look at Ignatov with a shocked look on your face. Shocked, because Ignatov himself looks almost hopeful as he also looks at you. "...Major," he says, "I understand your apprehension, but I wish to see where this is going."

"Gonna have to back him up on that, Chief," Sam says. "This is a whole other brand of science we're looking at. If it tries something, you can just pull the plug, right?"

"Or level the whole goddamn building from the stratosphere," you mutter, but you grudgingly admit he has a point. So far it was not a threat, but a questionable asset. "Study whatever is going on here, Doctor Ignatov. I'd damn well better hear something from you at the top of the month."

As you turn away, there is only two words that cross your mind, quoted from a fictional author you're quite fond of:

"Well, shit."

Dormant Artificial Intelligence Discovered
AI Supercomputer Actions Unlocked

I'm not too sure how well this came across, but I hope you enjoyed.

So congratulations. You have pseudo-sentient artificial intelligence. You will have new options to look at for this upcoming turn (which will probably come Saturday), but how exactly this can help you for your purposes? I'll let you all figure that one out. But it CAN help the Super Robot development if you develop it right.

I actually did make a roll chart for this when you all first attempted to excavate the complex out. Lower rolls would have gotten you a literal fragment of what you have, which would not have been as powerful, but still something Ignatov could develop with time and patience. As for who developed this and why? That's still information you don't quite have yet. But it does say a bit about the previous owners without actually saying anything.

Alright, time to get ready for tomorrow (which is going to be somewhat crazy for me). Drop a line if you have any questions!

Turn Six: Potential Possibilities
0850, 2 June, A.D. 2070
Commandant's Office

"I am impressed," Sasaki flatly says as you all gather around the conference table.

"Hm?" You look up.

Sasaki has an admittedly wry look to her face. "Lieutenant Wilde and Sergeant Henry have created a prototype that may well revolutionize vehicle technology as we know it."

"Charmed, Ma'am!" Wilde says with a goofy grin on his face. Henry just shrugs, nonchalant about the world around him as usual.

"Sam has discovered and established the rules on Extra Sensory Perception, long dismissed as a myth or hoax, and will soon begin analyzing the kaiju."

"Just some good ol' fashioned science and Union know-how," Sam says with a satisfied look to his face.

"Doctor Ignatov has discovered what is possibly a new sentient being, all in the former possessions of someone performing questionable experiments prior to Unification."

"It is something of a handful," Ignatov admits, nursing a cup of tea. He does not look like he's slept much. "But mark my words, this has incredible potential."

Though you're fairly certain he's talking about the AI you discovered...he could just as well be talking about the rejuvenative powers of caffeine.

Sasaki then looks at you. "Our achievements seem somewhat mundane in comparison."

"Says you," you snort as you pull out your notes. You are also indulging in the rejuvenative power of caffeine. "We have to manage them all."

RP INCOME: 8 RP

From: Peters, Louis, BG
To: Devin, Johnathan, MAJ
Subject: Demonstration Prototype

Major,

It pleases me to see that the Institute remains a hotbed of activity at all times. I of course have other teams working to upgrade the EUDF's arsenal, but they are iterations of what already exists. Their work is important, but their work also does not have the sheer presence that our own Super Robot would have.

I was highly impressed with your prototype, the CRX. Though I am aware it requires work, and I am also aware you are likely to incorporate some part of its design into the Super Robot, the CRX actually presents something of an opportunity.

You understand that the likes of General Armistead of the EUADF are highly vocal and critical of our work. I will teach you to learn this about the grand game; they will bend their rhetoric if we can offer them something. Not to the Air Defense Force specifically, mind you, but something to show that is tangible to the rest of the EUDF. Such as a transforming Coyote, one of the most used pieces of hardware in the entire Earth Union.

Your task is this: I require a working prototype that can be retrofitted to some of the existing EUDF hardware within four months. It can be of any vehicle that is workable or simpler for you, but I need one. It must reliably function, and it must have some form of armaments or utility that provides an advantage over its current default state.

I know this is not necessarily your position's description, but if I am to keep political pressure away from your job, I need this to be done. I have already fended off no less than five attempts to shut down the Institute on the justification that it was fraud and abuse of government resources. I told them they could be the first to feed the next kaiju without a Super Robot, but you understand my point.

You have four months, Major. Do this for me, and I can leverage this to ensure more resources come your way.

I expect great things.

Quite Respectfully,

LOUIS PETERS [BG]
IN COMMAND

BONUS OBJECTIVE: BG Peters wants a refined prototype from VARIABLE CONFIGURATION. Time limit of 4 Turns.
COMPLETION REWARD: +1 RP per turn

Defense Force Actions
1LT Richard Callaghan
Moderate ESP Potential
Former Occupation: Radar Technician
Piloting Skills: Inexperienced Pilot, ???

[LOCKED] Information Gathering – Threats – The Research Institute is in a good spot right now. Rather than focus on internal security, which is as good as it will get for the moment, Sasaki wants to send out agents to observe the threats available. While you are far from being combat effective, Sasaki points out it's better to at least be in the know.
Duration: 1 Turn
Gain information on Significant Threats

[LOCKED] Local Area Investigation - Spies? - It appears you have unwanted visitors snooping about. Thankfully Sasaki's proposals from early on in the project were designed for just this in mind. There's no sense in simply going in and trying to nab them. You and Sasaki agree - you want to observe them and see what exactly they're hoping to get out of spying on you from just beyond visual range.
Duration: 1 Turn
Progress to Security Net
Discover Information on Spies

[] Field Testing - CRX-02C - Good to their word, Wilde and Henry have prepared a test prototype for Captain Sasaki's pilots. This comes at a good time, as they are practically going stir-crazy. She fully plans on letting the pilots 'test the absolute limit of the Engineers' creations.' Durability, strength, reliability, agility - everything an operator could possibly want from a configured vehicle. The Engineers, for their part, are more than happy to provide.
Cost: 2 RP
Duration: 1-2 Turns
Test Roll (2d6, Threshold of 5-6), Success Guarantees Completion This Turn
Progress to Security Net, Progress to Variable Configuration
Unlocks CR-01 Jackal
Unlocks Actions

[] Piloting Stress Tests - You now have a piloting candidate, 1LT Callaghan. Only problem: he wasn't a pilot to begin with. In line with Sam's requests for candidates of all types, a humble radar technical officer turned out to have enough psychic potential to tap into the eventual man-machine interfaces in the works by the Engineers. He can abstract piloting if given the MMI, but he's hopeless as it stands.

Sasaki is not pleased with this. If you are a pilot, you are gaining some basic fighting and technical skills.

"There is no negotiating this, Lieutenant. You will learn like everyone else."
Cost: 1 RP (1 RP Locked Next Turn)
Duration: 3 Turns
Test Roll Each Turn at Disadvantage (1d6, Threshold of 5-6; Inexperienced Pilot)
Reveals Pilot Candidate Traits

[] Expansion - Motor Pool - Sasaki is very happy with your current capabilities. But she is not one to rest content on her laurels. As unorthodox as the Duo's designs are, the Coyote prototype plans she sees is enough to convince her of the merits of Variable Configuration.

She wants to kill two birds with one stone. She wants to requisition from Unity Station armored personnel carriers. This is both to gain even greater protection and firepower for the regular patrols, and to give Wilde and Henry something else to try configuring.

That, and she really wants to see a configuring armored personnel carrier. Is that too much to ask?
Cost: 3 RP (One Time Investment)
Duration: 2 Turns
Progress to Security Net, Progress to Variable Configuration
Unlocks new Actions

[] Landing Pad - Sasaki sees this as more of a long term idea than something for immediate consideration, but presents it to you regardless. The creation of dedicated landing facilities for vertical landing vehicles is something to consider, especially considering that the Gagarin makes a lot of trips between here and Unity Station. Creating a dedicated landing pad would perhaps enable more resources to come in.
Cost: 4 RP (One Time Investment)

Engineering Actions

Because I forgot to give you a Variable Configuration bonus awhile ago, I am offering one free bonus to a Variable Configuration Test this turn.

CONFIGURE! - One Free Re-Roll for each Variable Configuration Test this turn.

[LOCKED] Science – Biology Lab – Sam is focused on developing the basics on ESP Theory, but that doesn't mean the kaiju sample should remain neglected. Investing in the restoration of the biology labs on campus will finally allow you to put the sample in a safer area and begin unlocking its secrets. That said, this is a section of science that is yet unexplored, leaving Sam a little wary of plunging in headfirst. He claims he wants at least 'diving protective gear' before he does.
Duration: 1 Turns
Unlocks Kaiju Biotech Actions

[] Variable Configuration - Refinement - Now with a very strong idea of what works, Wilde and Henry want to try a variable configuration test on something...bigger. Now that they have the basics down, it's time to upscale, and it's time to do it with fabricated parts that they hope to standardize. The Hound-class cargo truck seems like the next logical step.
Cost: 3 RP (One Time Investment)
Duration: 2 Turns
Chance for Breakthrough, Test Roll (2d6, Threshold of 5-6, Bonus applies)
Progress to Variable Configuration, Unlocks Variable Configuration Actions, Progress to Super Robot Chassis

[] A Helping Hand - Robo-Jocks - Captain Sasaki really should have seen this coming. Or maybe she did and was goading the Engineers. But when they heard that she fully plans on letting the test pilots go nuts on the CRX-02C test model? There was absolutely no way they were sitting this one out. They were literally going to make history by holding a giant robot cage match and destructo-derby, and nothing you said was going to stop it from happening.

Sasaki is...bemused, but the pilots certainly are enthused by the idea!
Cost: 2 RP (One Time Investment)

Lowers Field Testing CRX-02C Rolls to 4-6 Threshold
Progress to Variable Configuration

[] A Helping Hand - Spies, You Say? - "So, the Captain's got her guys out hunting spies."
"Right."
"The Major also wants us to get a refined prototype for the big wigs."
"Uh huh."
"We have a transforming Coyote prototype that we're pretty sure works."
"...where are you going with this?"
"Wanna go cross country with the patrols in a giant robot?"
"Sure."

Cost: 1 RP (One Time Investment)
Duration: 1 Turn
Test for Variable Configuration Breakthrough (2d6, Threshold of 5-6, Bonus Applies)
Add Test Roll at Disadvantage to Local Area Investigation - Spies? (1d6, Threshold of 5-6); Chance to capture or drive off spies/equipment

[] ESP Theory - Punch It, It's All In The Mind - Sam's done it. He's got the ideas for a man-machine interface ready to go. But the devil is in the details, he always is. It's one thing to have the math that you think will be good for the Engineers, but it's another if the Engineers realize your math leads to something horrible, like something exploding, or old television reruns.

Wilde, Henry and Ignatov are ready to try tackling this, with Sam in an advisory role. But none of them want to rush this. This will be months in the making.
Cost: 2 RP (1 RP Locked Next Turn)
Duration: 3 Turns
Test Roll at Disadvantage (1d6, Threshold of 5-6); Chance to Reduce Duration
Enables Man Machine Interface, readies for Field Test Actions

[] Dreaming of Robotic Sheep - The fact you discovered a sentient AI descended from a failed virus attempt from some shadowy figure possibly attempting world domination…

...okay, you have to stop there. Thinking about it just makes your head hurt.

You have a sentient AI from the Unification Wars who seems all too willing to just help. It's almost childlike in its eagerness to help. Ignatov and all of Novgorod Computing Solutions want to help it learn, but they also want to monitor its thought processes. Their ultimate end goal is to slowly transplant it to a more modern system, but this is obviously something they'd need to take their time on.

Naturally they're going to want more resources to make this work, but you can't help but be a little excited at the opportunities this might present.
Cost: 1 RP (1 RP Locked Next Turn)
Duration: 4 Turns
Progress to AI Supercomputer, ???

[] Where do you want the node today? - In unlocking the AI from its prison, Ignatov's work in creating a more conventional supercomputer is already mostly done. He could very easily expand it into a proper supercomputer system, and then link the entire campus grounds to it. Doing so will greatly benefit the whole project, and would unlock additional options that only a proper supercomputer can provide. We have the power to support it, why not?
Cost: 2 RP (One Time Investment)
Duration: 1 Turn
Progress to Supercomputer, Unlocks New Actions

Science Actions

[] Biotech - Is It Supposed To Do That? – Sam's discovered that the kaiju sample is adaptive. In the wider scheme of things, that's bad news for the EUDF. What's good is that you are discovering this in a controlled environment. Sam wants to conduct a longer case study on the tissue samples now knowing this is happening. The lab is almost finished, but you may as well get started, right?
Cost: 1 RP (1 RP Investment locked next turn)
Duration: 3 Turns
Biotech Theory
Chance for Breakthrough: Test Roll at Disadvantage (1d6, Unfamiliar Territory)
Progress to Biotech Theory, Unlocks Actions

[] ESP - Pushing Limts - Your discoveries with ESP has mostly been to do with interfacing with machines via unique psychic signals. You now have the basics of this fairly well established. Now it's time to push it further. What kind of stress tolerances can varying skill levels take? How quickly can individuals operate at higher skill ceilings? And for how long?

All answers Sam looks to answer over the course of a few months. The answers will likely make the ability of minor psychic abilities much more widespread among your staff.
Cost: 2 RP (1 RP Locked Next Turn)
Duration: 4 Turns
Progress to Advanced ESP Theory, Unlocks Actions

[] ESP - Harder, Better, Faster, Smarter - "Sam here. Here's another question me and the boys have been thinking about. Psychic powers are pretty cool. Just by themselves, they let us do things no one else has been able to, and probably won't be able to naturally for a few more centuries at least.

But does psychic powers do anything else for you? Could someone theoretically become tougher or stronger or stronger-tougher (or tougher-stronger, depending on your preferences)? No clue. But we'd like to find out."
Cost: 2 RP (1 RP Locked Next Turn)
Duration: 4 Turns
Progress to Advanced ESP Theory, Unlocks Actions

[] A Helping Hand - Man Machine Interface - While Sam cautions against rushing anything, he is also aware that you don't have all of time to wait for results. He's willing to devote more time and energy just to make sure the Man Machine Interface development with the Engineers goes well. Setting aside a team dedicated to troubleshooting any issues along with Sam would help to smooth things over.
Cost: 1 RP (One Time Cost)
Duration: 1 Turn
Reduces Threshold of ESP Theory - It's All In The Mind to 4-6

This week at work sucked. Just want to put that out there. Hence, tired GM.

If I made any errors or something doesn't make any sense, point it out and I'll get to it in the morning.

For now, I'm going to invest some RP into gathering a very rare material: Sleep.

Enjoy!

Zaealix: Enter Ashley
Alright now that I'm no longer the last guy to have posted time for my usual omake!

Ashley stared up at the building with a big grin. So okay, getting transferred to what her then-superior had called a job under a pair of crazies and an old wash-up wasn't the most encouraging thing. Or the idea that she was going to be stuck in some lame backwater somewhere in the boonies where nothing of interest would happen? Yeah, it'd have been a poor day for proving engineering wasn't just a boys-only club.
Except...It turns out that 'lame backwater' was actually her hometown! And these so-called crazies were working on nothing less THEN BUILDING A SUPER ROBOT!!!

Okay maybe they were still crazy, the whole constantly chewing up vehicles certainly was something she raised an eyebrow at...As was the fact that the base was apparently in the old flattened Morrison University...But then again, SUPER ROBOT!!!

And best of all? Would totally be getting to show up outta the blue and impress Lucy with with her sweet new job! Last they talked Lucy was just going to become a librarian and waste her mind sorting dusty old books like the neeeerd she was.

*ding*
"Aaand that's that! You now have clearance to the Research Insitute formerly known as Morrison University! Engineer Ashley Lankenson, a pleasure to have you working with us!"
"Thanks, and I'm going to have a great time if it's true this is the place to be to work on SUPER ROBOTS!!!"
"...Yep! Though if I didn't know better I'd say you were one of Sam's, yelling like that!"
"Well come-on, I'm not about to let the boys have all the fun of building one of the defenders of humanity! Which way to the work- OMIGAWD!"
THAT CAR JUST TURNED INTO A ROBOT! THIS IS THE PLACE THIS IS THE PLACE THIS IS AWESOME!!!! GOTTA GET A CLOSER LOOK AT-
The thing shuddered, and then it's leg unexpectedly gave out as it fell over to the side with a massive crash.
...Okay so still work to do! That's fiiiine, it'll be fine.

*later in the evening*

Okay sooo turns out the CRX is a wild beast to work on. Makes sense coming from the mind of a dude who certainly likes to live up to his name! But then again, she did arrive late to the party so it stands to reason there wasn't much room for a woman's touch on the thing. But those man-machine interfaces that were supposedly coming...Those would definitely need it, if for no other-
Wait that brown hair-LUCY!?!
"LUCY!?!"
The woman in question spun around and...Oh, that's not Lucy. Not unless she aged an extra 20 years.
"Ashley! I hadn't contemplated the possiblity of your arrival!"
WAH! WHEN'D SHE GET HERE!?!
"LUCY!?! What-how!?"
"As entertaining as it might be to watch you try to reconcile your memories to the superior reality before you, yes, I'm here, and not just as a visitor, in some respects we're here for the same goal. To aid in progressing humanity's evolution to a glorious future beyond even the wildest dreams of today!"
"Whoa...You actually got out of your books and started putting your brain to use! About time girl!"
"Indeed, in more ways then you might think, even."
"...What's that supposed to-oh I know that look. You're not gonna tell me. Not even if...I call in THAT!?"
"Uhh, I er, was thinking that you'd forget about that...So, the Truth and Dare is?"
"The Truth, is what precisely are you talking about with that more ways then you might think. The Dare...Heh. I'll give you a month to work up to it. 2 Miles!"
"I'm taking the miles."
"Oooh now I REALLY wanna know! What's your secret!"
"That is information that's staying right in my crainium and out of your audio receptors!"
"I'll figure it out eventually neeeerd!"

...Sooo that's Ashley! And hopefully the way the two play off each other makes sense/they don't mix and sound similar. Any critique in how they're characterized? In general?

Well, that just happened
So I meant to just have a snippet in here.

This kind of snowballed. As you can clearly see.

Here you go. I'll post the turn results tomorrow. Time to get some "They Are Billions" time in before bed.

And as one note: I'm not too sure how well the action sequences came across in this. I'm always looking for feedback on how to improve on writing, so do let me know!

Commandant's Office

"Explain."

You and Sasaki are seated at your desk. You are leaning forward with both hands clasped in front of your face, obscuring a confused look about your face.

Sasaki is not faring much better than you. In fact, her face is as close to 'confused' as it ever gets (Which is never). "Over the last month, as you approved, I set Lieutenant Callaghan on a training regimen. As his previous occupation is that of a radar technical officer, I felt it would be prudent to conduct familiarization training on different types of vehicles."

You nod slowly. "Right. I remember signing off on that order." There is an awkward pause for a few moments, which stubbornly stretches out as you both consider how to even continue this conversation. "...so how did that-?"

"-I am getting to that, Sir," Sasaki sighs. "For the most part, I limited him to vehicle simulators. This was due to the lack of the actual equipment on hand, and because it would be quicker to bring him up to speed. I placed a particular emphasis on the Coyote patrol truck, given that is where we have seen the most success."

"That's all well and good, but-"

"-Sir, please. There is more."

The way she speaks just makes you press your head against your fists in frustration. "This has something to do with Wilde, doesn't it?"

0859, 10 June, A.D. 2070
Training Simulators, EUDF Barracks

Richard slumped against the seat in frustration again. The bright red letters proclaiming "YOU CRASHED" flash again across the screen. "Oh, come on," he complained. "Respectfully, Ma'am, this course is ridiculous!"

"I will not disagree with you," Captain Sasaki replied coolly. "But if you are expecting real world conditions to be as agreeable as a standard practice track, you are poorly naive."

"Ma'am, that was freaking two kaijus stomping through San Fran in the middle of rush hour and an earthquake!"

"All three of which are facts of life in that part of the world. What is your point?"

Richard just stared at her. Captain Sasaki stared back calmly.

"The Commandant has high hopes for you, Lieutenant," she said as she turned to walk away. "So it falls to us to make sure you do not disappoint him. Report back in two days after you have practiced, and we will try again."

Richard just smacked his face against the steering wheel mockup inside the training pod. "Oh for Pete's sake," he grumbled as he rested his forehead against the wheel. "This is impossible."

"Having some problems?" a voice asked from outside of the pod.

Looking out to his left, he saw the grinning face of Lieutenant Wilde. For some inexplicable reason, he was wearing what looked like a fedora, and the beginnings of a dusty-yellow beard was all but blaring defiance against grooming regulations the EUDF held dear.

"Oh, hey man," Richard said glumly. "I'm never going to get the damned hang of this thing."

"Ah, man, don't be like that!" Wilde said. The grin never left his face, and Richard was starting to think he overheard the majority of the exchange. "Y'know, I've got something pretty similar to this. But it's a heck of a lot more useful than the regular Coyote."

"...wait. That thing's actually ready?" Richard just blinked as he fully sat up in the seat and looked at him.

"Been ready for a little bit," he said with a shrug. "And we have a few test models that we gave over to the other pilots. They're putting them through their paces right now."

"Well, okay," Callaghan said slowly, "But what's that got to do with me?"

"One: we still have one left over, and we figured we'd go and help out the patrols find those spies. Two: you're frustrated as all hell, and we figured you could use a break." The grin somehow seemed to widen. "Wanna try it?"

Richard thought it over for the grand total of five seconds. "When?"

"...were you aware that Wilde and Henry were going out with the patrols?" you ask reasonably.

"I was aware, yes," Sasaki admits. "But as it was in the interest of field testing the CRX model, I felt it would be acceptable to allow it."

"But not that Callaghan was out there with them," you press.

"No, I was unaware of that," she scowls.

"Alright." You set that aside for now. You're not here to grill Sasaki. Not with how strangely well things turned out. It was much like piecing together the chain of events that caused a train wreck to happen right in front of you, only for the train to spit out entire crates of stamped gold bullion. You didn't question your luck in that it happened, you were just morbidly curious at that point.

"So...then go over the part where the patrol encountered the spies."

Sasaki nods briskly, now on more comfortable ground. "The patrol was able to time their routes to overlap and surround the spies. I instructed them to make sure that this time they had no simple means of simply evading questioning."

"But as I understand it," you say as you look over the after action report, "they were entrenched and reportedly hostile?"

"Our Soldiers encountered them near the 'campsite,'" Sasaki says calmly. She speaks of the battle no more urgently than discussing inventory reports. "There were a total of five personnel on foot, all equipped with varying models of small arms and with a case of disposable rocket launchers. I identified the equipment as black market gear, which very likely originates from Westphalian dealers."

"And their 'truck'?" you ask mildly.

Richard couldn't stop the massive grin that was probably on his face. Whatever Wilde and Henry had done with this Coyote was just so incredibly responsive.

"Toldja," Wilde said next to him in the passenger's seat. He sounded (admittedly deservedly) smug.

Henry was much more to the point. "Just keep a steady hand on the lever, Sir," he said. "Just remember to think of it as settings for different ground. You start feeling it shake too badly or you see rough ground ahead-"

"-pull it to the right setting, got it," Richard said confidently. Gently shifting the steering wheel with one hand, the other slowly adjusted the lever as instructed as he weaved the modded Coyote through sparse woodland. "How come Captain Sasaki didn't have me training on this? This is fantastic!"

"Probably because no one made a simulator of it yet," Wilde shrugged. "Also, Major Devin specifically asked us for an easier UI for this one. Our first one was just the steering wheel and other bits."

Richard winced. "That sounds horribly complicated."

"No worse than the flight stick version he tried," Henry muttered.

"Hey! I added a second one after that one, okay?"

Before Richard could ask about that one, he noticed at the corner of his eye one of the radio frequencies crackling. "Hey, Adam, check the radio for me," he said.

Frowning, Wilde switched the frequency until it came out much more clearly.

"-are responding with small arms fire," a voice said in quick but tense words. "I say again, suspicious personnel confirmed as hostile, and-"

"Rockets incoming!" another voice cut in. Any additional words were cut out from a loud explosion blaring through the speakers. Thankfully, the frequency itself did not cut out, indicating that someone there was still alive.

"...looks like they found them," Henry commented calmly. He and Wilde shared a look between them. "Think we should run him through configuring?"

"No time like the present!" Wilde said with a grin. Manipulating the map interface on the passenger's dashboard, he pulled up a new set of coordinates. "Turn left here and keep going."

"Wait, what?" Even as he turned left, Richard was bemused. "We're headed over there!?"

"Can you think of a better way to show the Captain you've got the chops?"

"...yes?"

"Too bad! We're doing it this way!"

"...so they redirected towards the firefight."

"I see." You really don't. What they did was utterly reckless, suicidal...and highly successful.

You really have no idea how you're supposed to feel about this.

"Do you have any idea why any of them did this?" you ask gently.

Captain Sasaki frowns in thought, before sighing. She'd come to some kind of conclusion. "Wilde and Henry are not difficult to consider: they were supremely confident that their prototype was up to the challenge. Their confidence was not misplaced, but the fact remains. As for Callaghan...I fear I was too harsh on him too early." She sighs. "I felt he needed to acclimate to operating new equipment early, but perhaps all I did was frustrate him. In turn, he likely felt a need to prove himself."

You grunt in vague agreement as you look over the report again, even if you already know what it says. "Well, I wouldn't count out your methods just yet. It clearly worked to some extent."

Sasaki just shakes her head in disbelief. "I think in English they refer to this as a…'perfect storm,' or something along those lines?" she questions.

"They also refer to it as a cluster," you remark dryly. "Thankfully it all landed on them and not us."

Excerpt from Debrief
Encounter with suspected spy cell
949th Truck Company

"...upon contact with the suspects, 3rd Platoon attempted to initiate questioning. The suspects reacted violently, and before an approach could be made, the platoon was struck with small arms fire. Going to ground, 3rd Platoon requested for support and were immediately bombarded with disposable rocket fire. Some of the Coyotes were knocked out with rocket fire."

...

"We suspected that the truck was some kind of guntruck at that point, since it had some kind of tarp covering it all. But what looked like a <expletive> robot tank torso popped out of the tarp and started firing at us with cannons. We only had small arms, so yeah, we called for backup."

"What did you see after that?"

"I saw one of our Coyotes turn into a robot. Everything else after that, I was just, 'okay, why not?'"

'Campsite'

"Careful with the sticks!" Wilde shouted as Richard struggled with the perspective and control change.

"Brake and pedals are the feet, the sticks are the arms!" Henry shouted as well.

"Would've been nice to know two minutes ago!!" Richard said through gritted teeth as the CRX stumbled and tripped around the wreckage. Yet the hasty instructions Henry shouted were already processing through Richard's brain as his brain just shut out all unnecessary input.

Okay. Okay, I can do this. Gently nudging the sticks, Richard forced the CRX into a ducking motion. Later he would wonder how the hell he made it work at a time when he should have been panicking, but his brain just trusted that the combination of moves he was making would be a facsimile of ducking. It helped that the motion evaded an incoming salvo from the guntruck, all the while ignoring the small arms pattering against it like rain.

If the sticks are the arms, these buttons are...the hands? Nudging the sticks again, the CRX's arms grabbed hold of one of the sundered trucks' roof and ripped it off of the frame, unwittingly freeing several Soldiers trapped inside. Richard ignored them as he held the impromptu shield in front of the CRX, immediately deflecting a glancing blow from the truck...tank...thing's cannon.

...okay, here we go. "Chaaaaaarge!"

For the first time he could he remember, a part of Richard's brain took in the delicious sight of a horribly confused Wilde. "What?"

You say nothing as you watch the video log from one of the surviving Coyotes. You see the CRX stumble somewhat, likely due to Callaghan's unfamiliarity with the mode. What piques your interest, however, is just how quickly Callaghan adjusted. Sam had mentioned something about the man being able to abstract things and just run with it, but that applied mainly to psychic machinery. Apparently it was not so limited.

Callaghan surprises you again as he literally charges the gun truck using a Coyote's roof as a shield, and literally shield-bashing into the thing before deciding to punch the gun-torso. The movements are clumsy, they are unrefined. They are also decidedly effective, particularly when the CRX rips off one of the cannon arms and flings it aside.

The driver of the truck had guts, you admit. He attempted to force the CRX away by driving forward into the CRX...only for the CRX's free punching arm to simply smash into the engine block, ripping out essential parts on its way out.

The fight ended remarkably quickly after that, particularly as the CRX then resorted to using its 'shield' to continuously smash in the head of the turret.

"...was anything recovered?" you ask calmly.

"The CRX itself was damaged, and will require a refit," Sasaki says, just as calmly as you. "We were able to recover documents and laptops from the spies."

"And the spies themselves?"

Sasaki again looks uncomfortable. "All expired." You raise an eyebrow. "The medical personnel on station found traces of cyanide in their bloodstream. Whoever dispatched them clearly gave them means of killing themselves to evade capture."

You frown. "Fanatics...Westphalians?"

"Of the more militant ones, more likely," she says. "I should have something by the end of the month."

"Please do." You look at the freeze frame image of the CRX's fist smashing into the 'torso' of the gun truck's robotic turret body. "And offer my commendations to the three of them." You pause. "After I throw them out of a window."
