[X] One Reaction Thruster, One Forward Cannon, One Aft (11 Industry -> 16 Industry)
It's a cargo ship, it's never going to outmaneuver a combat vessel. Spreading the guns out on it so that it can always shoot at the enemy means a Romulan can't just uncloak behind it and sit perfectly safe in its blind spot while blowing it up
Yeah... sure our interstellar civilization will get by on only 5 decent freighters I guess.
Also we're far too early in the game to have a real idea what is and isn't cheap, the Stingray isn't exactly a galaxy class so saying something 4 cheaper than it isn't cheap seem premature to me.
Listen, we have 4 years until the Stingray finishes production and presumably the NX starts. It's literally impossible for us to make more than 8 freighters before the Stingray is done and we have to reevaluate the entirety of our naval spending.
I don't know about the Earth Romulan war, or canonically whether it's fought with shitty freighters flinging missiles that somehow aren't obsolete like our spatial torpedoes. But I do know that naval buildups is a case of having to plan expenditures as far in advance as possible with the knowledge our plans can be kicked over on a dime. We do not have the industry to mass produce any ship. Especially if we want the industry to eventually make meaningful numbers.
This has been suggested by exactly one poster in this thread to my knowledge, and to be clear; I have never suggested it. This ship will almost certainly see combat, simply because we are not going to have an many ships as we need at the start of the war, and will be facing a larger and technologically superior enemy.
Yes, but there's a difference between necessity forcing a total commitment, and planning around these guys being a cornerstone of any war footing as opposed to a supplementary force.
I'm aware that you were the only one who referred to it as an auxiliary cruiser, but I consider you a persuasive advocate, and it's a compelling argument for a navy on a shoestring budget to try and use its limited hulls as much as possible.
Let me make one thing clear: we aren't making two in parallel anyway. That would eat up the entirety of our industrial capacity, which needs to be busily creating more industrial capacity right now. Literally the argument in favor of the 16 industry option is that spare 3 production making more production.
I'm aware, that was more intended to highlight the impossibility of these freighters being a major part of our naval order of battle.
Even if we only have 7 more years of naval production with no compounding production, that's something like 284 production. There's no realistic chance we're building more than 5 of these things at the moment and that's about third of our budget before growth or events. I think we'll probably settle for 4 over 4 years so the industry invested in both the stingrays and the freighters is freed up for more advanced warp 5 ships at the same time.
Yeah, if we're going with the plan of putting pairs of these ships into colonies of larger freighters, then I think the two forward guns is the best option. If not, then the other layout is certainly cheaper.

If we need to, we could refit these with impulse thrusters in the future. And every unused point of Industry doubles itself every 5 years, so we should have the spare capacity to do so.

While the temptation is there to make the ship more agile and better able to defend itself, the reality is that such a capability is probably better saved for a more heavily armed ship. The Zheng He will have to do with an aft phase cannon, which will hopefully suffice in persuading pirates to seek easier prey. You doubt it will always be successful given the dearth of targets for the marauders in deep space, but even one deterred attack would be a victory.
With that said and done the ship is now largely complete. Now she needs a name and United Earth Starfleet needs a recommended production schedule.
[ ] UES Zheng He, a Merchant-class starship line named after famous mercantile people.
[ ] UES Iowa, for the state where many of its new components were manufactured.
The name aside, the upcoming finalisation of the Warp 5 project is setting tongues wagging. With the final engine dimensions and specifications expected to be available in 2149, you can then start building a ship to take advantage of it. While the Warp 5 complex has its own separate funding to build the first ship of the class for a launch in 2151, anything afterwards will be drawing on your own resources. You should keep that in mind when suggesting an order for the Zheng He, and as a result you have elected to make a four-year order rather than the standard five-year. With the Stingray order ending in 2151 that should give you plenty to play with for the NX class.

On the flipside, using a state name for an up-gunned cargo trawler feels like a bit of a back-handed compliment to Iowa and other states used to name them - "you contributed enough we're naming a ship after your state, but it's only a small cheap cargo hauler".
If Zheng He is too important of a name to use for the lead-ship, perhaps it could be named the UES Adam Smith?
