Starfleet Design Bureau

right now humans are going to have a rep for building utterly absurd behemoth battleships who can anchor entire fleets. I suspect as time goes on that will evolve into a reputation for building utterly absurd behemoth battleships and insisting that they are for peaceful exploration.
I will look a Vulcan dead in the eye and tell them that this isn't a battleship. It's a cruiser.

As long as the ship proves itself (which I think it will in spades), I think we'll get to that point.
Hopefully we manage to get to at least 12, I figure that'd provide a solid case for why there were originally only 12 Connie's. Proportionally just as/slightly more expensive, and intended to be a direct replacement.

Going by what we see on screen, I think Starfleet operates on a 2:1 ratio anyways, given the Ultimate Computer's Connie battle group.

"We *do* intend this hull for exploration. However, our early experiences with some other spacefaring civilizations have led us to adopt the policy of 'if you take a swing at us, we will swing back and you won't enjoy the experience'."

5 Ships! We must have done great even with the expense. Those torpedo and Yoyodyne rolls turned out well.

[X] UFS Everest
This was once at the frontier of exploration, soon it could be so again. The retrospective post could have some cool names as well.

Future project ideas
Stealthy Scout / Courier
System Defense / Patrol & Customs Craft
Mobile Construction Ship (Makes stations/ industry)
Freighter/ Transport/ Colony Ship
Refits for older designs

Edit: adding in the other name for the mountain

Aside from cost, everything was significantly above expected par. You're god damn right that Starfleet wants as many of these as they can afford to put into the void.

[X] UFS Copernicus, named for astronomers and astrophysicists.
[X] UFS Beagle, named after ships of exploration.

Looks like we found our first synergy, with Astrometrics+Advanced Computing giving an additional point of Science. I wonder what other synergies there might be next time?

Yeah, all told, we built a ship that just has to show up to make everyone involved stop and reconsider what they're doing. The degree of "Don't make me come over there." is just... Perfect. There's a reason the UFP has never lost a war.

I'm now imagining that in the future, there's a entire quarter of Starfleet's overall budget earmarked and labeled "for building explorers".

As a side note the workers of Utopia Planitia have begun to have nightmares about when Starfleet places a order for an explorer ship.

Accordingly the Copernicus is awarded maximum points in the standard combat metric despite a reduced armament, and ten out of eleven points in the fleet combat metric for a result of A and A- in these sectors.
So, the -2 Engineering phasers dropped us by one point in fleet combat but nothing in standard combat? Makes sense, and it was probably worthwhile to save the extra cost there. We might've actually hit 0 points on the cost grade if we did go all out.

It's very painfully expensive, but damn if it isn't an extremely capable ship. There can be no doubt that it's an explorer, though, with that level of science equipment/space, quarantine rooms, medical facilities, computer cores, operational range, and cruise speed.

The fact that she's actually undergunned for her size/cost/tech level is also something of a statement.

I get the feeling that replacements for our defense-oriented warships will be interesting to design. Without having to worry nearly as much about operational range, science, cruise speed, auxiliary systems, or high-end medical facilities, we can afford to make much smaller, cheaper ships that are really well armed and finally shielded.

Not Skate-class levels of brutal utilitarian efficiency, but with our greatly improved technology and not needing to pump them out in numbers ASAP, we don't have to resort to that. More like a Stingray that's a technological peer and more efficient in its design.

This feels like an ambitious achievement and goal all in one. Not just an explorer of the unknown, but one that represents peer-level cutting edge technology and exploring the unknown for even our allies, rising to the challenge. The fact that it's also a beast of a ship helps.

Aaahhhh... glorious. Behold, the first ship to earn the Thunderchild citation of ass kicking ability. May she be the first of many.

Judging from how we handled things in the war era, now that we have a mainline cruiser and a DN/Exploration Vessel hybrid, we would normally make a light ship, yes? The Skate is obsolete now that Photons and Phasers are both available, let alone shielding, and don't get me started on the Stingray - all of our light fleet elements are in the "this will die if an enemy sneezes forcefully at it" range now, and I don't like it. Hopefully, the Pacifist block won't complain too hard if we make a dedicated combat ship - we have the example of the Skate and the threat of Suddenly Klingon to point at, at least. Maybe give it some form of utility just in case?

The Stingray was already replaced by the Cygnus though?
