Starfleet Design Bureau

To be honest I feel like the best designation for this ship is Destroyer, but starfleet has never really used that one.
It's literally half the size of our previous light cruiser.

That and destroyers were generally torpedo boats.

Yeah that checks out. Still pretty far from a fighter.

It'd also make sense to keep the cruiser designation for more multipurpose ships.

I would agree, this isn't a cruiser in any sense. Frigate and corvette both sound more Starfleet like, and I would even say corvette given the size, crew complement, and lack of range, frigates should be able to go places.

Eh, I feel like corvette would be smaller still, its still hard the size of a cruiser, and Frigates feel more like a generalist work horse.

Destroyers were created to hunt down and destroy torpedo boats.

But yeah I guess those names are a little more Star Fleet.

I mean, we're looking at a ship so small there's no shuttlepods or internal turbolifts, things even the Defiant had, so I think corvette is fully appropriate. Frigate for something that can go a little farther and do some research or diplomacy. I think a destroyer would be a little larger, this is the torpedo boat to a destroyer. Maybe we'll get to build a Saladin, that got called a destroyer.

Yeah a ship built to destroy smaller ships that strike at our capital ships would be a destroyed and that describes our warbird problem I think.

The size right above this is going to be a light cruiser again.

The Vulcan, Andorian, Tellarite and even Denobulan SDB consultants watching the humans get into a fight over which outdated surface vessel class this resembles more.

This in the middle of another argument over which small harmless animal to name it after.

An Andorian jokes. "What next, they start arguing over basic geometric shapes?"

This results in traumatic flashbacks for the Vulcans who witnessed exactly that.

The Tellarites just think it's a good time and look into applying to join the SDB.

I give you rhe RN FLower class corvette and vote for the name of the lead ship of that class
[x] Gladiolus

Gives us 294 names right of the bat ....

Or we just give them numbers: S-1, S-2, S-3 ....

To be honest I think an aggressive name for the class would be best for morale purposes. But fish names are pretty traditional for submarines and there's some overlap (especially in living conditions) with this small torpedo ship and the example could be the kind of aggression desired in crews. A raptor like Hawk or Falcon or etc would also have been apropos given the broader context of them hunting "Warbirds."

Hummingbird is kind of a funny meme choice. Going with the Nahuatl huitzil at least would have brought the Mesoamerican associations with ferocity, potency, and warriors closer to the fore and been kind of progressive to use a non-English name for the class, though. That suggestion didn't really get much traction though, and I didn't really favor it over something like Shark or Hawk.

I'm mixed the Nahuatl origin is cool but at the same time... an alien civilization wondering what the name means and looking into the culture it comes from... is not the first impression I want humanity to have.

To me the Aztecs were pretty much the one time in my mind in history where a European nation helps destroy a civilization and I end up thinking it was a okay outcome.

I get than modern Nahua speakers don't do anything like that, but the imagery is from that era tied to warriors and things so...
