Starfleet Design Bureau

I've been watching the Merlin TV show recently so...

[ ] Excalibur
[ ] Fae
[ ] Green Knight
[ ] Merlin

A bat'leth is not a sword.
This sounds like someone who isn't in bat'leth range, are you really going to try to play definition games with the Klingons? That strikes me as something that would need hazard pay... and a good life insurance policy.

I also don't support Constellation class -Though that is a very good name to keep in our back pocket for an explorer class somewhere before the Galaxy (Alt-Ambassidor, perhaps?) to start the theme (since we know that the Ent-J from the end of that particular mess in Enterprise is a "Universe class starship" ha)

Anyway, stats comparison of our Connie to the other cruisers we've got in Starfleet going into the war.

The Average Damage, Ratings and Coverage stats are all somewhat approximate and based on looking at other designs.

The highlights here I think other than 66% greater sustained damage and significantly greater durability, is that the Alpha Strike is almost as much as a Kea and a Saga put together LMAO.

But honestly the raw numbers may slightly oversell the difference. I think that Very High Manoeuvrability is likely to make quite a big qualitative difference in the way the ship fights, and her ability to use her alpha strike and generally lay guns on target.

Perhaps something like

[] Declaration-class

as a name that's related but not the same as the constitution the same way this ship is to the OTL Connie?

The document's got that bit about people having unalienable rights, but it's still also a generic enough class name that we should be able to pull similar and related texts and names from multiple species and cultures for the individual ships without much difficulty.

I mean Sayle can make up some mythical alien weapons to go with "Excalibur". It's not going to be all human names.

Excalibur has my pick! Love the history and connotation behind the name. This is definitely the Sword and Shield of the Federation.

I honestly don't mind Excalibur too much. I might approval for that.
Constitution is an "Absolutely not" for me though. She's not a stately gunboat, elegantly picking apart foes with her guns as she makes graceful curves and swoops, she's a hot-rod missile cruiser that drives by at "Holy, did you see that-" speed spitting fire, before saloming around in a bootlegger turn to do it again and again until you explode.

Thunderchild and Lightning both sound good.
I like warspite but there are rather high odds of the intent behind the name being misunderstood.

I like the Idea behind "reasons not to poke the pacifists"/"you just had to make us come over there..." naming, but I'm not sure how to make that work.

[EX] Chesapeake-class

Started out as a joke but it works.

[EX] Trafalgar-class

A warship named after naval battles works.

[EX] Kursk-class

So does a warship themed after battles. And this time it's not America-centric!

hmm.

Dragon class.

has some appeal. now that I think on it
edit: Especially since you can build them in pairs; UFS Fafnir and UFS Siegfried, UFS Ancalagon and UFS Eärendil...

But a warship named after a naval disaster brought on by state collapse and only partial recovery, neglected maintenance, and propagandistic desire for macho military spectacle would be just awful.

In a similar vein, Independence could work.

with that description what about...

ah damn it you did it first!

I'm in favor of continuing to avoid canon names like we have for most ships, just to prevent any confusion. Defiant or something like Independence would work pretty well as universal themes, although I'm fond of Excalibur too.
