Starfleet Design Bureau

God damnit I wanted the performance or the retrospective so we could see how it did! Arrrrghh!

Names, names. Defiant is what I was leaning towards, but Excalibur wouldn't hurt either given that these were definitely intended as warships first and first responders second.

Going to shill for

[ ] Exigence class

because it is one, and the naming scheme unfolds like a flower.

Alright, looks like I'll rep Excalibur, mainly because the idea of mythic/magical weapons as a ship name will never not be cool as hell. Galatine, Asi, Fragarach... we've got quite a stable.

[] Lightning-class.

I'm a fan of this suggestion.

Otherwise, I don't really have an opinion. All three of the given options seem good.

I would have preferred a spear since it kinda points at things and goes forwards, but excalibur works

Edit: Actually on second thought excalibur seems a very human-centric name and I kinda wanna move away from that.

But the ship is not complete without a name. There are three immediate candidates: first is Constitution, for the name of the project. Names reflecting the history of constitutions and guarantors of civil law are in ready supply. Second is Defiant, representing the Federation's willingness to stand up to acts of aggression. History offers no shortage of names that extol heroism and stubborness in the face of fate. Third is Excalibur, a reference to the sword of a mythical ruler from Earth's past. Weapons steeped in legend and the rightful use of force will find themselves in good company. There are plenty of available names in theme for any of these choices, though perhaps you have thoughts of your own.

[ ] Constitution-class.
[ ] Defiant-class.
[ ] Excalibur-class.
On the basis that one of STOs Constitution variants is called the Excalibur, this is a ship that will be as decisive in war as it will righteous in peace, and the fact I'd rather avoid Constitution for this…

It's gotta be Excalibur!

I actually like the idea. It shows the fact that this is a weapon made to defend the Federation, while still sounding cultured. Plus, hopefully we can get more similar names from our non-human members.

Also, I think someone proposed Independence-class previously for a write-in? Because that makes thematic sense for both an alternate history varient of the Constitution, and for a ship to defend against Klingon aggression.

[ ] Other - Thunderchild-class

If Enterprise can infinitely repeat with new iterations, so can we.
eeeeh, I hesitate to call it after the Thunderchild when it shares neither overall hull configuration nor fighting style. just doesn't really fit, y'know?

I would like people to consider Exigence class, since that gives us likely sister names like UFS Expediency, UFS Neccessity, UFS Practicality, UFS Compromise ....

Gonna put my write-in for Independence-class. It's adjacent enough to Constitution to evoke some of the same feelings and pull from the same list of ship names while being different enough to be ours.

[X] Independence-class

I'll approval vote for Constitution as well though, as I doubt my write-in's gonna get far and we may as well own what we've built.

[X] Constitution-class.

Ah, but that forgets Excalibur was not made by human hands (iirc).

That, and a non-human name would likely (as with actual Star Trek) necessitate a created naming scheme that runs the risk of becoming something of a letter salad that no one really can attach meaning to. A ship's gotta have a name that means something to a lot of people, those looking into the universe as a fiction included. It's a lot harder to accomplish that when you're making a stable of names up (Klingons aside, but they've had perhaps the most development out of any alien species in Star Trek).

See, after having seen this floated a few times over the course of the design, I don't think I like it. There's not glorifying a ship of war, and then there's this, and I can't quite put my finger on the line. Ships should still have a certain 'something' in the name that feels aspirational, if you're going for a concept naming system. I wouldn't be thrilled at crewing a ship called the Compromise, that sounds like Starfleet is ashamed of it - it's bad for morale.

Constitution. It looks like the canon one from most angles, it's in all likelihood going to fulfil the same role as the canon Connie, and it's honestly just a good name. It represents the Federation's ability to withstand hardship, which is pretty much exactly what it's here to do.

The Klingons will love that the most glorious challenge in Federation space is named after a mythical weapon. They're going to record so many tedious battle tales about these ships.
