[X] Fabrication Workshops (+12 Engineering) [Fabrication]

, after thinking about it a bit more, something else stood out to me. The only difference between this timeline and the original is that Warp 8 spacecraft were introduced later here. Which means the Klingon willingness to start war with the Federation is substantially linked to how many fast Federation starship they can see. Possibly because higher speeds from their opponents limit their potential to strike at will. As such, if one wants any chance of delaying the war, or at least making it a shorter war, one probably needs as many Warp 8 spacecraft as soon as possible. Because that seems to be the only real change that seems to matter here, armor/hull and speed wise the current Federation is probably superior to itself in the original time line after all, and weapon and shield wise probably on par.
Classic Connie would fill the space lanes with strong cruisers, instead of focusing on a handful of battleships/explorers. A good thing to keep in mind if we go with numbers to fight the Klingon war...

I vote against triage because the Haley is to slow. It knows that faster ships are coming and that it should stick to its planned mission.

from what i can tell when the haylee is done we will have about 15 ish years before the Klingon war or about 2 ships worth of time. whatever the next one i don't mind but i'd want to make a warp 8 combat friggate like the Salachii. we are likely to need a dedicated combat vessel and the skate/salachii method is one i really enjoy

yeah, part of the reason why I want to do an Explorer first is to start in on the "recycle the saucer/other bits of the hull" thing as just a Thing That Starfleet Does™, because parts commonality good.

I would really like to do an Explorer, then a light-ish cruiser on the same saucer, then a science vessel that's the Explorer Engineering Hull with a different saucer on it. Edit: And then possibly a second lighter ship with said saucer, too. just get things to the point where we produce like 1-3 saucer and engineering hulls and then mix, match and modify them to make like a dozen different ship designs, because LOGISTICS!
Let me preface this by saying I totally get where you're coming from, and reusing hulls makes a huge amount of sense from a production and maintenance logistics standpoint.

None of this is tickling my brain because I like the 'design' part. Reusing the same parts over and over feels... dull and stifling.

Well, whatever we build it's going to be able to move. Between the 20% impulse boost from the warp 8 and the fact we just did prototype impulse, it's going to be like jumping two tech levels on one ship.

It would feel like a waste to not plug them into a big frame and make it dance like a fighter.

So, how exactly is the tie-breaking going to be handled on this one, are we going to have some sort of Runoff poll? :V

As I understand it, the extra Fabrication, if this is mass produced and those cargo pods being used everywhere, will mean more development and infrastructure Federation wide. That means more shipyards, phaser turrets, shields, sensors, outposts, farming facilities, and even medical facilities all over.

The Klingons will have to fight through every inch of space simply due to us having the ability to have defenses deployed EVERYWHERE.

I'm pretty sure we have a lot better economy and infrastructure than the original time line, but that's part of the problem.

Because of our economy based Star bases, we have more civilians traffic and trade. This is great in the long run, but at this exact moment we are running slower ships than we would have had because we went for the better, faster more compact warp core that is incompatible with all our current ships. We also chose significantly weaker weapons than we would have had for easier coverage to let us use less weapons and thrusters - another economical decision but it still means demonstratively weaker ships.

So we probably have greater lootable wealth to go with those weaker and slower (at warp) ships and star bases that are massive trade and fuel refineries. In hindsight, it's really not a surprise they are attacking us.

Remember, according to the time report they basically rolled over us right up until they hit the core worlds. Or rather, that's what's going to happen unless we can change it in our next two designs.

Basically we need to hope we can switch that giant economy and infrastructure system up to a war production mode before we get owned completely. But I think so long as we can hold out long enough to do that, mass production warp 8 ships will save the day and leave us better off than we otherwise would have been.

No. The report only stated that a fleet was able to penetrate that deeply. That doesnt mean that the Klingons ran roughshod over everything from Andoria to the border, it means the Klingons were able to fly AROUND our defenses and intercept attempts. Space is too big for walls.

This ain't star wars where the most common form of FTL can be legitimately blockaded due to the way hyperdrive work, space is 3D and very empty.

Really isn't much we can do to stop it without more ships, faster ships, or better defenses.

Honestly, a thing that should probably be the focus next are dreadnaughts or fast response escorts (its been mentioned before but should be reemphasized), as the D6 is beyond anything the feds currently have (and the last dreadnaught was decommisioned following its last antipiracy run) and the raider vessels are to slippery for out current fleet to consistently take out (due to the late warp engines).

As with the better engines and battleships the can get round the space defences (until they hit a core world which they MUST take) and then crack it given their Battleships are superior atm.

The Thunderchild did exactly what we built it to do, and served with distinction. Hell, Warspite managed to play a role in the Kzin throwdown despite being literally two generations out of date because she had precisely the right build for the moment.

But yeah, I'm thinking we're due for a proper Explorer as our first Warp 8 design.
I like the idea of making a new thunderchild. But not as some preemptive thing.

That's not what starfleet is about. Those sort of dreadnoughts should be a response to a threat that needs them, not something we have at the ready.

I like the idea of a pattern of enemies thinking "Oh look at this soft bunch of pacifists" attacking and then within a year or two they realize their mistake when a brand new state of the art battleship designed to deal with their exact doctrine appears.

Now that I think about it... didn't the feds vs romulans end with a treaty that didn't say fed get no cloaks? As I just realised I don't think we ever got an option for that tech at any point (not relevant atm but...)

The treaty banning cloaks hasn't happened yet and possibly never will, what we got from the Romulans at the end of the war was the technology needed to sense cloaked ships at long ranges.

Thing is, battleships take TIME. It took a few in quest years just to design the Thunderchilds back when we had far less advanced technology to include in our designs. Then building them took more time still, and that was us rushing to get them into the field.

Better to have them ready to go before things get bad.

There's a reason the canon Federation uses explorers as their line battleships most of the time.
