Oh, I forgot!
Dead man, do we retrieve the witch corpse to cremate it? Sure, her greed got the better of her, but we should give her a proper send off.... If for no other reason, to make sure she won't return as a daurgr.

Incidentally, if we plan on joining the Varangian Guard as Sigurdr, should we learn Greek from Steinarr?

I wonder if we can somehow get polar bear bones just for the added specialness pf them being the strongest bears. Probably difficult but it should be at least possible?

Polar bears are bigger and stronger, but that's not what we need from armor. We need resilience, and in terms of attitude polar bears are much more likely to back down than at least grizzly bears, to the point that when the two come into conflict for food, it is the larger polar bears who generally lose. Brown bears may be more retiring, but I don't get that impression. If we want armor that bestows resilience or ferocity, we want brown bear bone, I think.

Polar bear might be better for a weapon, as they're much more predatory and, as you say, stronger...but those aren't the most important things for armor.

Oh, I forgot!

Oh, that's definitely on the agenda, but that would definitely be part of the actual visit, not something we can just put in the plan and have happen.

Incidentally, if we plan on joining the Varangian Guard as Sigurdr, should we learn Greek from Steinarr?

It's not a bad idea. We should see if it's an option.

@Imperial Fister could we invest research dice in learning Greek from Steinarr? Would we need to have a specific action discussing that first or could we just start doing that?

I suppose the northern parts of Scandinavia would be close to the Arctic, which should have beats by definition.

It might offer enough cold resistance to let Abjorn work a lot more during the winter months outside of combat at least. That might be pretty nice and help with action economy, especially since chainmail is like the casual wear of armor.

Mail is really not casual wear. We don't wear ours around casually and Abjorn almost certainly won't be either...it's literally the heaviest armor the Norse have available (well, until we invent plate or something).

Ah dang. I might be mixing up my armor types then.

I do think the cold and water resistance perks might pair very well with Terror Bear's Loyalty if only because then they'd be able to reliably tank the elements that Halla's Fire is weak to. And maybe make him be able to swim without sinking during boating for lifeguard duty.

But mechanically grizzly would probably provide better defensive staying stats as you've said so I don't have any objections for that either.

Anyway, Fister, if we do 1 on 1 playdates for Asgeirr, will he get better rolls? 1d6 base roll with negative 3d6 is kind of, uh, oof.

Like should we be selecting personality traits that align with him for a better result? What kind of personality traits would get on with a wolf anyway..?

First guess: Personality traits that don't start shit. Like avoid rude. And avoid bold/rowdy making rude worse. Avoid the combo of those like the plague.
Second guess: Friendly, Charming, both helping to counteract Asgeirr tantrums, and something for shared interests with Asgeirr.

@Imperial Fister
Can we ask Gabriel to teach us his peoples runes (latin alphabet)?
Was thinking about making him a silverarmring with an engraving honoring him being a good friend/dreng to Halla.

Ah, my apologies. I misremembered. It wasn't birthrate, it was the infant mortality rate.

Regardless, Jenny Jochens' Women in Old Norse Society is pretty good if you haven't read it already. My copy is sitting on my bookshelf and I keep staring at it as I'm rather scared that I've gotten some key aspect fundamentally wrong that would only be revealed upon reread.

Oh, cheers!

I've been meaning to read Children of Ash and Elm after hearing good reviews, so I'll ad this one to the pile!

You're right. I'll see if I can tighten up the portrayal in future updates. I'll also see about adding in more player agency when it comes to this, though I'm not sure how to go about doing that.

Thanks for being so understanding, and apologies if this kinda came out of nowhere.

There definitely is also the aspect of, as you say, 'What is this saying?' but I think there's been enough subtext of Norse society being deeply messed up that her being comfortable with this arrangement falls into the same category as a lot of her other societal views not quite lining up with those of the reader. Like, Norse society or Halla being okay with something has not been presented as making that thing inherently good, and in particular there've definitely been references showing that she, quite reasonably in context, fundamentally does not understand mortals and what their lives are without the casual super powers all of the Norse possess. Halla operates from a position of profound privilege in a lot of ways, and that does come up in the narrative.

That's a fair point, yeah.

I mean, the straightforward thing to do is not have options locked when we're pregnant just noted as high risk. We probably won't take them barring great need, but we'll at least be able to if we really feel it's worth it. In terms of getting pregnant in the first place, an option to use seidr to prevent pregnancy (without worrying about the mechanics of the specific spell) if we feel like it is easy enough to institute, I'd think, though that would be a little weirder to come out of nowhere. Though, on the other hand, we did just learn seidr (something most women dabble in), so maybe that would make sense.

Yeah that would make sense to me. It may well me something that most norse women get as part of "the talk", and Halla just skipped because she's a complete cryptid and was too busy thinking about swords. Honestly I find that idea quite fitting for Halla lol

As something of a small bit of levity from the somewhat heavy topic, what is everyone's favorite fight so far and also your favorite kill? Doesn't have to be Halla's kill, just a kill that's happened.

There's a lot of great ones, and it's not the most spectacular, but there's something about our first fight with the Draugr which really sticks out in mymemory.

Probably because it was our first "big fight" in a way, reading it I remember having a real feeling of "holy shit, we're dealing with some Capital-D Danger now, I'm not sure we're going to make it out of this one", and then the resolution felt so satisfying, like we'd taken our first step into a wider world.

Asveig gave Halla The Talk in one of the earlier updates.

Judging by Halla's later activities I don't think she bothered to apply any contraceptive methods..

I am now kind of in love with the idea of Norse warriors occasionally using Latin words/characters in the same random way as like, dudebros today getting tattoos in Japanese or Chinese script.

Rando Norse Dude: "This runic script from the mystical Christian South, it talks about the changing of the seasons and enhances my Virthing-"

Gabriel with a Tired Expression: "It says 'Annoying Foreigner Has Too Much Silver'."

That would be a very good moment with grandpa
I've been meaning to read Children of Ash and Elm after hearing good reviews, so I'll ad this one to the pile!
My favorite book on Norse shenanigans is William R Short's Men of Terror. Focuses primarily on mentality and how that was intrinsically linked to how the Norse battles. Also covers weapons and tactics both in small scale and big picture.

And it's not an especially difficult read either… as far as I remember, I could be wrong!
Anyway, Fister, if we do 1 on 1 playdates for Asgeirr, will he get better rolls? 1d6 base roll with negative 3d6 is kind of, uh, oof.
You will, yes, as you'll be able to pay proper attention to Asgeirr to stop him from doing Asgeirr things

No problem

Or how you'll have machine translated vaguely relevant accessory English text on things in Japan and other parts of Asia. A breadbox with the words 'delicious grain product' on the side, for example

I've got a bit of an odd day ahead of me. I'll be busy at 3pm my time, which is right smack dab in the middle of when I write. What this means is uncertain.

Some research ideas for our Aspects:

1) Keep our Aspects stoked and revealed while practicing our tricks.
Reason: It's possible Halla learns or controls her Orthsirr better with her Saemd/Virthing stoked.
2) Injure ourselves, then stoke our Aspects, examine how our Orthsirr 'instinctively' heals our injuries. Compare against Time Heals all Wounds - See if we can optimize our Aspect Healing process (extra Endurance when we stoke aspects would be nice).
You will, yes, as you'll be able to pay proper attention to Asgeirr to stop him from doing Asgeirr things
We're gonna have some AP hell for playdates..

...I've got some questions here.

It would be neat to experiment with what happens if we put more than one Aspect into Flame-Tending Blade, assuming that's even possible to begin with. Or maybe it's a "level of mastery" type of thing? If it is then we'd probably want to like, point it at the ocean or something.

Also if there are multiple super-techniques which need Aspects to power them, it makes me wonder if the grammar of high-end Norse fights is kind of similar to Shonen fights in general, where characters deliberately start the fight at only 50% power or whatever, so they can feel out their opponent's move-set and abilities, then unleash their various super techniques. With fights falling into a rhythm of intense action, then lulls as people refresh their Aspects, and maybe even use their Aspects for healing as we saw Halla do without meaning to in the her Hooknails fight.

We should experiment with trying that again deliberately, actually.

Hey Halla,

1) Do you know what the social and legal implications for you would be if you finished your tutelage under Solrun and were considered properly a Seeress?
2) Are the Einheri considered part of The Highest's Hird?
3) Is it Nid to set traps on your own land?
4) Do you know how do raids (on other Norsemen) not completely demolish everything in a farm, village or town, seeing as buildings are kind of fragile compared to the attacks Norsemen dish out? Is there like a, 'raiders will patiently wait for the defenders to exit their houses before starting the fight' kind of thing?
---
1. heightened suspicion and people just aren't super sure how to treat you as the use of Seeresses often toes the line between honor and shame
2. Some Einherjar are
3. Yes, if they're for people
4. Raids are for wealth, not blood. Raiders will absolutely wait for enemies to come out if it means that the wealth won't be damaged. However, if it takes too long then they'll go in.
---
Hey Blackhand,

1) Could I store my Frenzy in my Fylgja's Capacity, the same way I can store tricks in it?
2) Is the amount of Frenzy any Norseman can hold limited by their Hugr?
3) If I put multiple runes on an item, would it work if some parts were filled with paint and other parts with blood?
---
'No. Perhaps, I was never as much of a Berserk as others. I never tested, but I assume so.'

Asveig gave Halla The Talk in one of the earlier updates.

Judging by Halla's later activities I don't think she bothered to apply any contraceptive methods..

She gave her The Talk, but she never actually taught her any of the household seidr that's apparently common. If birth control fell into that category, Halla knowing about it but not having actually learned the spell for it until picking up actual seidr from Solrun would make some sense. Like, given her demonstrated enthusiasm for kids and her still being only 16 when her mother died, her having put off learning that does work, I think.

Hmm. In the Dominions videogame series (made by the same people as Conquest of Elysium) the elite warriors of Helheim are known as Helhirding. Mentioning it because you mentioned using the term Einherjar for different groups and Helhirding seems like a reasonable alternative if you want to differentiate them.

In NorseQuest, the term 'Einherjar' (Einheri being the singular) simply refers to the honored dead who are in service of one of the Gods. However, it's definitely a good idea to have some terms to differentiate between different groups of Einherjar. So, you could absolutely call one of Hel's Einherjar a 'Helhirding' if you so desired, but Einherjar is also acceptable as that is what they are as an entity.

Good find, have a Reward Dice
