That's good to hear. I was getting a little bit fatigued with the sheer amount of combat, to be honest.

We do owe Gabriel a spar which would be combat, just with lower stakes, but I'm perfectly happy to put that off in the interests of avoiding QM fatigue.

Oh right!

We should put 1 Odr into Slipstream so we can move even faster.

This was not confirmed to actually work, though I asked. @Imperial Fister can we do this?

What's on our docket for next turn anyway? More crafting tutoring?

We're making new tools and likely setting up playdates for the kids. I was planning on sparring with Gabriel since we said we would, but if our QM prefers to dial back combat for a bit we can just say that's part of the offscreen 'training sparring' we do regularly, and we'll likely look over Wavedancer instead, as we've been in need of doing that for a bit.

The turn after that once we know how good the tools are, and thus what to invest in crafting, we'll be crafting a bunch of stuff.

A spar with Gabriel is fine, as it's less a fight and more violent character interaction. I'd still prefer a bit of a breather, like a turn perhaps, but after that is fair game.

You can, yes. Sorry for being a bit lax with questions as of late. I'm pretty sure I missed some questions since last update, so I'll have to go hunting.

What are our chances of getting wonderous tools? Also do we want to fully burn our aspects that turn for 3 extra bonus per aspect.

Really hope the plan works.

Looking at his stats..

Frenzy +9
Defense +6

Rolled 124 (Implied 35d6), 129 (37d6), 118 (34d6) on defence, so he used 36d6 +15 defences
Attacked with 130 (37d6), 98 (28d6!?!?), 103(29d6!?!?), which is very unusual for a folded attack because IIRC usually all the dice are the same?

His Sharpened attacks seem to do 8 damage per hit (Tricks strip RS automatically, then (6+5+5)/2 = 8 Implied damage per hit).

Also there's another advantage to developing a Sword/Atgeir Hugareida - You can use Sharpen on them.

Check. We might want to do Steinarr first then, depending. We'll see what happens.

That was the only one from me, I think. Plan edited to add Odr to our Slipstream.

I mean presumably he just rolled either really well on the first attack, or really badly on the second two. Or some of each. 30d6 can easily result in all of those rolls just through die variance.

His Sharpened attacks seem to do 8 damage per hit (Tricks strip RS automatically, then (6+5+5)/2 = 8 Implied damage per hit).

Copying Crowfeeder's runes make that less of a concern, but it's a nice side benefit, yes.

I really want the slice of life when we teach Abjorn Eyespeak and he talks with Blackhand.

Speaking of which, we might want to try practicing the body possession trick with Blackhand, if it does break Frenzy Analysis it would be a good edge to have against future Berserks. It's basically the yugioh Mind Switch but for physical combat.

It's not a bad idea. Probably requires Research to do? We can fit it in turn after the upcoming one if so.

"Hey Blackhand, how can you notice a twist or seisr being used? Odr we know has a visual effect, but the other two?"
'I believe that the cat fylgja is able to perceive such things as that. Seeing Eyes and Seersight have similar capabilities, as well. Certain Twists, like Puncture, create a sort of aura, a shell, around the trick it was used on.'

I wonder if we can get kennings from dwarves. Halla Boozebane feels like a good one to get from this.

Sucking down air like a dying man in the desert, you grit your teeth and scowl. Power erupts in a crimson flash as a crown of iron sprouts from your brow and a cloak of owl feathers unfurls across your body.

Hooknails pauses as the candleflames flicker on in unison. His eyes narrow as his lips thin, a hint of worry playing across his angular face. "A crown of iron spikes..."

"Yeah! What of it?" You call across the warehouse floor, the flow of blood slowing as the influx of orthstirr mends the opened arteries both outside and inside your body.

He holds up two fingers. His bronze fishhooks gleam in the light of your might. "I have met only two men with hair of red, eyes of steel, and crowns of iron spikes and I've sworn myself to one of them. So tell me," a finger falls, leaving his forefinger pointing straight at you, "Halla Skyfire, who is the man you call your father?"

'What is he playing at...?'

"My father is Steinarr Hallsson." Your voice rumbles with pride, as if daring him to challenge your heritage.

He frowns as if dejected. "Damn, and I'd hoped I'd stumbled across my King's long lost offspring. That would've helped my standing within the hird considerably!" He shrugs a sigh, "Oh well, you can't win 'em all."

He doesn't really care, but that's not exactly a massive revelation. However, the more time he talks, the more time you have to plan. He likely knows that as well, but, like many things, he doesn't seem to care all that much.

As much as it rankles, you can't beat him in a stand-up fight. That's just a simple fact. You, alone, stand little chance against a member of a Steelfather's own personal hird.

However, thinking you alone is nothing less than a mistake. Even disregarding Blackhand, you've still got fifteen slightly-less drunk dwarves trying their best to assemble into something resembling a formation. In their current state, they're dead weight in a fight.

But that's only in their current state. You don't have anything specialized in dealing with inebriation, but Asveig always said that alcohol is a poison. A grin threatens to spill out across your face as you consider the Campfire in your soul.

Yeah... yeah that could work!

With his level of Frenzy, there's no way he doesn't know what you're about to try. A spark of amused curiosity flashes in his eyes as your limbs tense. But even if he knows, will he stop it?

There's only one way to find out.

His eyes sharpen and you move.

Three things happen in the span of a single heartbeat.

The ground cracks as you leap up, straight towards the ceiling. The air sizzles as you fly, wings of fire fully extended as your jaw clenches so tightly you fear your teeth might crack. Though Sagaseeker has been your companion for many years, you need your hand free more than you need your weapon, so you stow it behind your back.

Hooknails leans forward, inky orthstirr snapping across his body as a spear breaks the sound barrier. It hurtles across the warehouse with all the force of the unstoppable avalanche, the air screaming as it carves its passage.

You spin into a backflip as the spear reaches out to touch you. As if in slow motion, your foot touches against the rock wall as the spear bristles with overcharged might, preparing to unleash its deadly charge against whatever poor thing happens to be in its way.
(Halla's Hamr: 32+5(Skyfire)+6(Reward Dice)=43 vs Hooknails' Hamr: 23+9=32, Halla Wins!)
Pushing off the surface, you twist as your free hand comes up. Crimson orthstirr flows along your body and ignites in your palm as the spear sails a mere fraction of an inch away from your skin. The handful of rapidly condensing sparks travels down as the swirling palm of stopping force swings up.

A Sparkbomb impacts the wall at the exact same moment as the spear makes contact. While a single Sparkbomb alone probably doesn't have the explosive force to do what you want from it, a Sparkbomb combined with this explosive spear, on the other hand, is another thing entirely.

You don't know if this will work, in fact, it probably won't! It's a plan hinging on a half-dozen different 'maybes', for crying out loud! No rational mind would dare entertain the idea of such a foolhardy plan!

But, when all rational options are exhausted, there remains only the irrational. Let it never be said that Halla Skyfire feared a little bit of danger! Let your name pass the All-Father's lips in awe!

Your upper hand draws a small circle in the air and that's all it takes for Standstill to swirl into a Halting Vortex. Your mastery of Standstill isn't all that incredible. In fact, some might call it pitiful. But maybe, just maybe, it's enough for this.

A pair of explosions ring out as you hold Standstill back as best you can. It's a near thing, but you manage to keep it from solidifying yet stop it from dissipating. While useless for protection, that's not its purpose!

The wave of force produced by two explosions catches on the half-formed Halting Vortex with all the power of the unerring river. Its hard to keep hold of the trick, but keep hold you do as you sail across the warehouse.

Hooknails' eyes snap wide as his jaw opens a crack. His awe lasts only a moment before the cold rapids of duty dashes it aside. He growls and steps forward as his orthstirr surges. Hands clench into fists as ghostly spear after ghostly spear bursts out on intercept courses.

He's aiming to knock you from the sky! Your eyes narrow, the speed-born grin widening on your face. Time trickles down once again, though the elation in your heart stays as fiery as ever.
(Halla's Hamr: 22+3(Skyfire)+5(Reward Dice)=30 vs Hooknails' Hamr: 20+9=29, Halla Wins!)
You laugh as explosions ring out around you, each spear alone enough to kill you as dead as the stone you fly under! But yet, not a single one touches you as you whistle with glee.

The invisible field of Standstill fills your hand as you twist forward into a spin. Your arm trails behind you and drags the cloak of power along. With a single flick of the wrist, you let your Standstill fly.

That all happened in the breadth of a heartbeat. There's barely enough time for you to see Standstill fly, let alone for Hooknails to react in any meaningful way.

"S-Standstill?!" His eyes snap wide as the wind whips his hat off his head, revealing the youthfulness of his face. He's in his twenties, but not all that far into it. If you had to make a guess, you'd put him at twenty-four or twenty-five. Five or six years older than you, around the same age as Sten and Eric.

The folds of the Inertia-Arresting Throw wrap around his body, stopping him from speaking any further words. A shame, you'd have liked to know who he was about to compare you to. But no matter.

You hit the ground with a slide, your cloak spreading out about your body like a cowl of feathers. Rising to your feet, you find yourself standing with your back to the dwarves of Team Shale. They stumble away from the impact site, some even falling in the process.

Hooknails' eyes meet yours as your grin lengthens, mirroring the smirk that had plagued you at the start of the fight. Power surges across your body as you fling your arms out and fire leaps from your fingertips. A wave of power washes over the first four dwarves, curing them them of their drunken stupor.

A spear juts up from the ground, but snaps against the odr-enhanced shell of power. Another wave of crimson fire frees four more dwarves from their self-inflicted pain. Another spear, another wave. A final spear finally frees him from his entrapment, but he leaps from his trap into the waiting arms of fifteen very angry dwarves.

Fifteen dwarves and one Halla Skyfire.

Hooknails scowls as he weighs his options. A dwarf blows into a horn and the sound of approaching thunder cinches the deal. He growls and spits out some pithy set of words, "Fine, fine! You've won this round, Halla Skyfire! But we will meet again!"

You grin and crack your neck. "I wouldn't have it any other way."

Mist explodes from his body as his presence vanishes. As the reinforcements burst into the room and the mist disappears, all that's left is a punched-through burl.

You collapse onto your hands and knees as the stress finally gets to you. A dwarf pats you on the back as you throw up. The patting is a little awkward, but you appreciate the heartfelt gesture nonetheless.

The next day, you're standing before a somber Toki as a pair of dwarves fill a sack with treasure. Though Oinn had died in the battle, the oldest son of Thun managed to take Gort with him. Gort's cleaned skull sits in Toki's workstation, the intent to make a fine goblet from the dead dwarf.

"If you hadn't been there..." Toki had been silent, searching for the words, "then this entire takeover would have been for nothing. All those dead brothers..." He sighs, the weight of the foreman's duty already wrinkling his brow. "Though you didn't ask for it, service requires payment." A dwarf hands the filled sack to Toki, who then hands it to you. "Here, payment for a job well done."

The sack, though small, is surprisingly hefty as you nearly drop it. Opening it, the light of gold washing over your face as your body stiffens in shock and surprise.

"A hundred-and-fifty ounces of gold, ten for each of the worker-brothers you saved."

"T-thank you," you're not sure what to say, other than that.

He waves it off with a laugh and a smile. "No, thank you."

AN: Apologies for taking the reins there, but inspiration struck and all I could do was hold on tight.

25-minute moratorium.

I appreciate the fact she reused a Standstill trick for rapid movement, Odin must toast for the irony alone.

Also 12 training dice? that is honestly insane.

Edit: also what is up with his Steelfather being steeleyed red haired and with a iron crown, distant descended of Odin too?

Wow... we really clutched that. That guy seemed super talented, too - Ironbrother in his early twenties? A member of a Steelfather's personal hird?! Can't wait to fight the guy again, he was actually pretty cool. Well, don't want to fight him any time soon, but a rematch when we're stronger one day would be cool.

Also goes to show that a higher-tier Ironbrother shits all over us. Not looking forward to fighting another one, although I imagine Hooknails was a cut above the rest, given all the knowledge he had and all his hugareida.

[] Training Dice: The next time you encounter Hooknails, you will have to fight him. However, you'll gain an extra 12 training dice until that time comes.

@Imperial Fister, what does it mean by 'reusability and mobility'? Can't we already move with Halting Vortex active? Not to mention Halting Vortex is really cheap, so by reusability, what exactly do you mean?

We probably should learn draw poison while we have the time, if only for the byproduct of allowing us to douse people in alcohol at a distance before setting them on fire.

I think this was brought up, but I also remember it being said that alcohol in this time period wouldn't be flammable...?

Is it possible to make a combo hugareida trick with another person? I think Standstill and Leverage could do some fun things together. I also think it'd be cute to have some battle couple combos.

I saw "Final" in the threadmark title and I was half-sure we died lmao. Kudo's to the planmakers!

Also this guy knows about Standstill too?! This was definitely an Enemy-influenced plot to gank us.

This was a great chapter!

and he is missing.... interesting.
too bad there is no more rounds, wanted to ask how his king is called....

The feat is nice, but i am unsure its better than a modified HV.... although, in this case, we can eat our cake and have it too, we just need to train it manually.

Oh!!! Right!!! We need to ask both steinar and the headsman about hooknails! both for uncle and to know what it means he was here....

We know the name of his king. He's Geirmund Heljarskinn. Who I'm like, 99% sure we're not related to. Blackhand has never brought him up, and it doesn't line up with Geirmund's supposed origin either - he was apparently the son of a petty Norse king, although his origin may not necessarily be the same in this universe depending on Imperial.
