I'm sorry so is this guy more a mini Thor or is he something Blackhand could have killed?
Jotnar and Aesir are the same species. Thor is to them as, say, Marvel's Captain America is to a regular human. So I suppose 'mini Thor' isn't *incorrect*, but it's also not entirely accurate as mini Thor in the sagas could lift things that only his father, Thor, could.

Blackhand could've killed him, but it's the same way that, technically, Blackhand can slay just about anything if he got really lucky

Based on the laughtrack, the hunger, the shapeshifting/disguise and the name being a pun on "Heckler" I would bet he's one of Loki's close kin. (Or, I suppose, Loki in disguise, but I think IF would rather expand the mythic cast a bit).

In NorseQuest's world, there are many more Jotnar, Aesir, and Vanir then in real life—probably, anyways.

However, I think I've given enough clues to figure out what he's all about

I mean...even in real-world Norse myths, there are a crapload of Jotun who don't even warrant a name (usually as Thor kills a bunch of them). They're certainly powerful enough to be in the same vague playing field as the Aesir (and thus more than we can deal with), but there being a bunch of them seems pretty well supported mythologically.

And there were likely many myths that didn't survive to the present day. Even among the gods we have there's a lot of confusion as some seem to be the same entity under different names or sometimes different entities.

The hungry depths, isn't it?
Pretty polite though.
...too bad we can't just ue our Odr to give him food from our soul.....

The burison talk was really fishy though.... Like, why was Halla so irritated so quickly?

And, again, we are not alone, the crew is with us. So, @Imperial Fister what are the crews' ideas, if any?

The "touch the sun" competition is nice idea, but he probably has something similar to our "unending time in the sun"....

Flys without wings,
Quicker with joy,
Slower with boredom,
But ever go forward.
What's this?
time

It can be hard and it can be soft,
Either see through or not.
Can come from high or low.
Whatis it?
water

...too bad we can't just ue our Odr to give him food from our soul.....

We can currently produce 52 Food at most if we burned 39 Odr. If he only wanted 50 Food, we'd just give it to him from our stores...50 would be an acceptable loss. So yeah, definitely not on the table.

The burison talk was really fishy though.... Like, why was Halla so irritated so quickly?

That was a little weird. We also weren't actually supposed to say where it was, but if they were never gonna go for the offer, it matters little.

Is describing Odr obliquely in the riddle going to trigger a disclosure? As i understood the jötnar has infusion levels and thus would trigger a large reprisal if he said Odr out loud.
if the jötnar does get reprisals then we could make a riddle which is answered by "Odr". then the jötun couldn't say the answer even if the guessed it correctly.

Saying Odr doesn't trigger disclosure, it just gets censored by the world...the uninitiated can't even hear the word. You need to describe things about the way it works to trigger Disclosure.

I devoured the hand of justice
I am chained by zero links
Silent revenge will be my end
Who am I?
Fenrir ate the Hand of Tyr (then god of justice)
Fenrir is bound ('chained') by Gleipnir a magic thread made by the dwarves (which is not a metal chain -> has no chain links)
Fenrir will be killed by Víðarr 'the silent As' in revenge for killing Odin

I have no end and no beginning
only ever going change
any being can invoke me
yet only few have seen my truest form
(answer:a circle. it has no ending but is ever changing in direction. anyone can draw a circle but drawing it well is very hard. drawing a perfect circle is impossible but that might be beyond Halla's thinking as she didn't study geometry in depth I think)

I am life to some and death to others
and a symbol to all
in one direction I am bound
by strings of fate invoked by toil
(answer- an arrow. an arrow is a tool of hunting, neccessary to survive so life. it is death, as a weapon, obviously. it is a symbol of swiftness or determination. strings of fate are simply the string of a bow, which can take considerable strength and effort to draw(invoked by toil)

I just thought of something, a potential issue with this course of action, how is Heklr going to guess? Like, when you make a guess, it can be answered, when Heklr makes a guess...? I dunno
Assuming that the riddles that make it into the update would be picked by vote, the answer could be included in same post as the original vote as a spoiler. So after Heklr has made his guess, you can check the post where the winning vote was made for the answer to see if Heklr was right or now.

[X] Challenge him to a game or contest of your choosing
-[X] Specifically, challenge him to a contest of riddles

Yeah, if Imperial Fister agrees not to use even Reward Die granted peaking on the actual votes it's pretty straightforward. We probably number that something like this:

[] Riddle #1
-[] Insert Riddle Text Here

Insert answer here

Can we theme something around the parts of Halla that are gatekept from this guy? No idea how a contest in Little Sister-ing would look, but our protagonists gender is like the one massive advantage we have here compared to the average ship.
Shame this Quest isn't raunchier, though, having a husband right there would be such a great contest fodder:V Especially since our opponent wouldn't know that, unlike the gender which can be seen at a glance.

Its a Jotnar and a shapeshifter, if they have older siblings they may take a female form and then partecipate to the contest.

I am not sure how much primordial creatures of chaos like the Jotnar care abaout arbitrary human gender roles, those type of things seem more for the Aesir. Afterall Loki for sure didn't seem to care much.

An idea i had
Riddle along the lines of
Spawned by Bear and Owl was I
Before me came [riddle-y description of Kid 1s Fylgja]
After me came [riddle-y description of Kid 3s Fylgja]
What am I?
Acceptable answers being Kid 2s name or Fylgja.

I would reiterate a reminder that we need the Jotnar Helkr to agree that it lost 'fair and square'. If it isn't happy with how we won, fair chance it's going to throw a tantrum or something and we all die. So any riddle we give to Helkr should be (theoratically) solvable with what they know. Remember that the spirit of a fair contest will only protect us if we actually abide by the spirit of the contest.

I am busy today and have a little trouble understanding what's going on but it seems complicated and important, so @Imperial Fister I wish to put 2 Reward Dice towards a good outcome here.

I want to express some skepticism about him being a shapeshifter as opposed to merely "unstable" because he's associated with Primordial Chaos. IIRC, Norse mythology has almost no shapeshifters in the casual English sense of the word of someone who can change at their own will. What gets called "shapeshifters" are usually Hamr-shifters who put on something like a magic fursuit which turns any wearer (the suits can be borrowed from one person to another) into that specific animal. Lesser versions of this same magic give you some of an animal's power by wearing its pelt.

The answer to that would actually also be Hallbjorn. But it's also a 'What have I got in my pockets?' question...it's not really a riddle, it's a cheat, and will provoke him to flip the table.

Good to have access to. We probably won't actually use them since IF gets hints on our riddle if we get hints on his, but very good to have them available if needed.

In this world it seems like the magic fursuits aren't strictly needed, not from what we've heard anyway. Just high enough Hamr and you can turn into an animal...which this guy definitely has.

Dunno when you last read story, so very quick summary from the beginning:
Drought in the valley, causing famine.
Halla got a bunch of volunteers and went on a trade trip, got some stuff from an adventure and traded for food where its cheap.
Now returning home, the dice decided that we are attacked in calm waters by a severity 1d100=96 creature in calm waters.
Jotun Heklr is hungry and wants our cargo.
Blackhand advises: No chance fighting, we can give up our cargo to survive or we could challenge him to a competition (according to Blackhand Jotun can't resist accepting challenges to competitions)
Thread seems to converge on riddle competition, riddles are posted in spoilers to avoid IF accidentally reading them prematurely.
Reward dice don't get us hints unless IF gets to look into equal amounts of spoilers.

"Also"?
Did I overlook a similar riddle?
Anyway: Yeah, why I posted it in discussion instead of making it a real riddle. Could be good to have one proper "what do i have in my Pocket" riddle on hand, just in case.

We have 4 kids. Hallbjorn is the 4th. So if you only eliminate the first two, the third and 4th are both viable answers.

And I dunno if we even want to be trying for those kinds of things.
