I'm not eliminating first and second, I'm saying between first and third.

Crap, you're right. I misread. My bad...I still don't think this is a good type of question to be contemplating. I have an idea for a gorcha riddle that would technically be fair but take advantage of wording and cultural blind spots, but I need to think how to phrase it to make it more distracting from the trick...

some people posted Gollum and Bilbo's riddles, which are great but obviously not good to try here- they are well known as are the answers. but reading that whole sequence, as well s the riddles, is an excellent source of inspiration for how to use cutural blindspots without actual cheating- both Bilbo and Gollum do it a lot, though unwittingly, and its mentioned a lot in the chapter

I agree with you, to answer you with more details.

The problem is we don't know enough abaout Jotnar to know what will be a cultural blindspot and what not. If we make riddles on the Bible will he know the answer? If we make riddles abaout common objects will he know abaout them?

This is a limitation to our ability to predict what riddles would be easy to solve and what impossible.

I think if we can play into the sexism, that would work. That seems at least as engrained in them as the Aesir...which is maybe not quite as much as the mortal Norse, but still significant.

Do remember that jotunns will always cheat, so look out for any of that.

That's probably not entirely true. The Jotun aren't super likely to cheat in mythology as far as I remember...some do, some don't.

while thats true, we know enough, or can reasonably assume enough, to be able to use that. he is unlikely for example to have intimate knowledge of human toils from lacking cultivation- because he is from a culture of god like beings. does that mean he won't know about stuff like, say, famine? he likely does. but he is also less likely to think about that- because its not something he usually does

This one is done in Skaldic Poetry.

Death.

Probably a little too obvious though

Jotnar shenanigans aside, this is a real problem afflicting millions of people and I'm glad you have the courage to talk about it your writing Fister.
Sometimes, you have to take a stand for what's right. Not only do Danes have trouble replacing broken bikes with their language issues, but I propose that it is responsible for another issue of theirs!

(NSFW. Nothing explicit, it's just a fuckin' weird tv ad. Also, the comments are cringe.)

I want to make this longer to pull attention from the trick, but the inspiration isn't coming, so he's the basic 'gotcha' riddle:

"Three warriors all say Sven is their brother, but Sven says he has no brothers. None are lying or confused. How is this possible?"

The answer of course is that the three warriors are Sven's sisters.

it travels in the blackest dark
beginning every march with dusk
a face unblinking, ever watching
the travel ends come the morning

this one might be a tad easy. the moon

The Norse, and probably more importantly IF don't have 'women can't be warriors' as a blindspot. Particularly when Halla's right there.

They kinda do. People are definitely surprised by Halla. But more importantly, that riddle works on modern people decently often if you replace 'warriors' with 'doctors'. It works more by the way it's presented and unconscious biases than by active prejudice. IF spotting it is significantly more likely than most people in-setting doing so, though. Which is why I wanted to expand it and add extraneous information to make people more likely to miss the trick, but inspiration failed me.

I honestly prefer my previous riddle, but thought it was worth tossing out as an example of 'gotcha' that was nonetheless fair play.

So can someone catch us up?

Are we doing riddles, or a rap battle?

Honestly I think rap battling a Jotun would be hilarious, but if we've gone for a battle of riddles, then I can try and work something up.

Technically the vote is still going on, but the guy has a laugh track and his name if Heklr (ie: 'heckler')...flyting seems like a losing strategy. So riddles are currently well in the lead.

actually lets backtrack and do a math contest instead! :p

maybe add a few lines describing each brother deeds/feats of power? and give them names that can be read as males. actually, fashion it into a story, along the lines of

"Oh Sven, strong hand, the bravest lad
was cursed to be forgotten
for all the deeds he ever did
he brother to three mighty warriors

the powerful (warrior 1)
who tore a dragon asunder
who wrestled giants, trolls and men
who made great heroes

the nimble, quick (warrior 2)
whose grace was like no other
who leapt so high, above the moon
who outrun the thunder

the cleverest, (warrior 3)
who outsmarted Loki
whose tongue and wits
have won some feats
no warrior ever gotten.\

so in their shadow Sven the brave
has ever dwelled, unspoken
so when the warriors were away Sven rose and told them
I have no brother, swear by Odin. those are tales of fiction.
and he was right, he did not lie.
how could that be, I wonder

how is it?
I think we can improve some descriptions, especially for the third warrior, maybe add something between each warrior description. what do you think

I have no idea how we'd do that. We couldn't do it OOC like riddles (we all have computers) and I don't think any of the stats really govern mathematical proficiency. And yes, I know it's a joke, but still.

What about Tafl?

We could play Fister as a team, or select a champion!

As Shard suggests, I also worry that actual game stats come into play there...this guy could have easily double our dice pool and triple or quadruple our Frenzy and auto-win.
