Bling (Hamingja: 6x3, 5x2, 4x2, 3x2, 2x3, 1x4) 7 Successes
You frown as you wander the marketplace, not finding much in the way of value. It seems that there's just not a lot on hand at the moment. There's some amber from the Baltic, some tortoise shell, and some sea shells collected off the shore, but not much more than that, unfortunately.

(Amber (15oz of bling) = 4oz Silver )
(Tortoise Shell (10oz of bling) = 3oz Silver)
(Sea Shell (5oz of bling) = 1oz Silver)
Would you like to buy some bling?

Horse (Hamingja: 6x3, 5x7, 4x1, 3x4, 1x1) 24 Successes
While the valuables on sale weren't anything spectacular, the horses are a different story! As soon as you walk to that section, you're immediately awed by the selection of horseflesh on display. It's been a good year for the stallions!

But amongst the many myriad horses, three catch your eye.

The first is Morningsilver, a mare of the most beautiful silver. Whoever buys her will have quite the boost to their prestige!

The second is Sundancer, a stallion as nimble as the day as long. When the owner took him out to show him off, he was able to out-dance his competition!

The third is Swiftarrow, a stallion that's said to be faster then the swiftest arrow. His owner backed his claim up by racing the horse against an arrow—needless to say, the horse won.

None of them are cheap, but the higher quality the horse, the stronger the nisse it will attract so you don't even consider settling for less. There will be no sub-par things about your farm, not if you have anything to say about it!

Each horse costs 130oz Silver, would you like to buy one?

Food (Hamingja: 4x4, 3x3, 2x5, 1x4) 1 Failure. Um, uh oh.
Despite the grandeur of the horses, you can't help but notice that there's a disturbing lack of food on display. Wealthy farmers liked to show off that they didn't need every bit of food, so they flaunted it as a display of wealth. To see none, not even a little, well, that's not exactly a good sign.

Speaking of little food, there's been a noticeable lack of animals in the Hading as of late... Probably a result of the wolves moving in, but still.

...This winter is going to be a hard one, isn't it?

(For the rest of the summer, your land will only provide half as much food. It will produce no food during the winter)

AN: Well, looks like it's time to see what you're made of. In times of plenty, anyone can flourish, but in times of strife, that is the truest test of a person's character.

Visiting limits have been lifted for the duration of this event.

No moratorium, I'm shooting for a second update

True, i suppose... still, its a good time to be a good farmer, no matter how you look at it.
...gods, we are lucky the horra stuff is sorted out already...

one time. nothing of use grows in there without odr. 1 cost to make them sprout, 1 to make them grow and a third to make them be harvest able... and, as far as i know, Rye and other grains need to be replanted every year....

Edit: The quotes:
Oh right, it was Rye.
Then we need to get our hands on some perennials to secure our food supply without having to re-spend Odr.

Looks like Sea Shells are the best cost-to-value, but it doesn't feel very resonant with what we're trying to do.

We need 125 oz of Bling in total, so let's go work this out.

5 purchases of Amber for 20 oz of Silver produces 75 oz of Bling, then I think we'll get 50 oz of Tortoise Shell for the 'Pauldrons', costing us 15 oz of Silver.

That leaves us with exactly 125 oz of Bling, which meets our goals, and all of the materials involved are renowned for their toughness and goes well with the overall aesthetic we're aiming for.

So

[X] Yes, you will buy some Bling
-[X] 75 Amber (25 Silver), 50 oz Tortoise Shell (15 Silver)

Are the differences between the horses chiefly cosmetic @Imperial Fister? Or is it "Morningsilver gives more Prestige, Sundancer is more nimble, Swiftarrow is the fastest at a gallop?"

[X] Yes, you will buy some bling
-[X] But all three (30 oz. bling, costs 8 oz. silver)

All of these are thematically on-point for armor.

[X] Yes, you will buy a horse
-[X] Morningsilver

The prestige is better than the other options since we don't, uh, actually ride.

[X] Talk to Audrikr and play a game of tafl while you're at it

We actually already have a listed agenda for this. Let's use it.

(For the rest of the summer, your land will only provide half as much food. It will produce no food during the winter)

Our animals and Pot still provide food, right? Nothing about this should effect them. Is that right @Imperial Fister?

[X] Yes, you will buy some Bling
-[X] 75 Amber (25 Silver), 50 oz Tortoise Shell (15 oz)

I don't think there are multiple instances of any of the items for sale in terms of bling. 8 oz. of silver buys it all.

This is correct

Correct, though the pot doesn't magically generate food. It just allows you to cook more efficiently. If there's no food, then the pot doesn't do anything.

I could go with or without this one to be honest

We're gonna have to use more Odr for to help feed people aren't we.

Check. Okay, so, that means we'll gain 19 Food next turn rather than the usual 26 (for a total of a 2 Food surplus on top of our current 23, total 25), and only 12 during the winter months, for a net loss of 10 each month, and we'll need 5 more Food than we've got to make it through (ie: a food stockpile of 30 Food when Winter starts is enough to get us through...we will have 25 from our farm).

That all assumes we keep our deal with the dwarves, but it's well worth 15 Odr to not violate a deal with dwarves. Hell, starving is probably better than violating a deal with dwarves.

But we're also going wolf hunting, and wolves are made of meat. I suggest we take some of our spoils of battle in wolf meat and secure our supplies without even the need to spend Odr.

Well then.

Let's work out the math.

We currently require 17 Food per turn to meet our obligations and upkeep, we generate 26 Food per turn. This means by default, we tuck away 9 every turn in Summer, and 4 every turn in Winter. Our current state is... Adequate, at least on the forefront.

The problem now, is that this value is now halved, down to 13. Now, our Pot still lets us make excellent efficiency with our food, so that still adds +8, so we're at 21 per turn, which means we're now tucking away 4 every turn from here on out. That's... Still tolerable--but then we get to winter, and our Food income drops to Zero while still requiring 22 Food per turn to feed everyone. Does the Pot still work as long as we have Food to begin with @Imperial Fister? It just doesn't create Food from nothing? Because our Food income drops to zero at that point, and whether we need to scrounge up 22 Food per turn or 14 is a big deal.

EDIT: Deadman's math is better, look at his

This is wrong. The 26 includes the +8 (actual breakdown is that we get 14 from our land, 8 from the Pot, and 4 from our Livestock). See my analysis above for what we have and need.

@Imperial Fister
if we want to plant fruits and other perennials in our Soulscape and then water them with Odr, is that a researh dice thing or a whole AP?

edit:
To have at least one source on fruits n berries used in the viking age (though in denmark, which is further south than Hallas home):

Fruit and berries

The Vikings had access to abundant nuts and berries. They knew that apples were healthy to eat as they kept the gods young.

Anyway, I think we'll be okay, as long as this doesn't last more than a year. If it's still going on next year, we're going to have to get our Raiding Boots on.

We were already planning on going trading in Vestfold. I bet we can make that a food run. It wouldn't be as profitable, but it should be viable as a plan.

But yeah, we'd need an external addition to our food supply if this lasted into next year. Like, we'd still be running at a slight surplus during Summer, but it wouldn't be enough to get us through next Winter.

I think I missed something; why do we need bling?

Realizing Abjorn's Armor that we're making this turn.

Probably wouldn't be the worst idea to go raiding anyways. Famine means there will be plenty of people willing and able to raid to feed their families. If we keep it focused on getting food, we shouldn't face too much opposition as well.

Alternatively, and I'm just spitballing ideas here, we delay the Vestfold trip a bit and go trading in Christian lands instead. Our goods will be more exotic "aka higher priced" and their food surplus should be better than Vestfold's.

We can already fly faster than an arrow, so there's no real reason to get a horse for anything other than prestige

Raiding is a possibility, but I do think trading is probably preferable if we can manage to get what we want out of it.

This is a solid possibility, though. We do have an in with Wessex, after all, and have always intended to take a trip there.
