(Omake) From the Reaper's Journal (Canon)
From the Journal of Riphath Althean:
The Force has been called something that flows from life...but it cannot strictly be measured within life. The midichlorian hypothesis was suggested but given the high degree of midichlorians in small life forms near nexuses of the Force they seem to congregate near high concentrations of Force energy, rather than the Force arising from them. Objects placed in areas near nexuses of the Force eventually acquire attributes they did not previously possess without any other cause for these attributes. Given that it cannot be measured, is subjectively perceived differently from person to person within the same tradition and from tradition to tradition, and its use is associated with events observed from multiple viewpoints which are contrary to known natural laws, I have a new hypothesis:

The Force is a supernatural energy field which supersedes chemistry, biology, and physics to a degree limited only by the will of the one wielding the Force.

Since learning of it and learning to use it, I have been trying to understand it in context of the sciences I am familiar with. I have also witnessed a Force-user using his arms after application of a lightsaber to the glenohumeral joint. This should not be possible, but my life was endangered by the fact that it was happening.

The answer, then, is remarkably simple: for the sufficiently strong in the Force, the galaxy functions on belief. Become strong enough in the Force and do anything you want.

There's one problem with that answer though: I am not strong in the Force. I am skilled in the Force, certainly. I am creative with the Force. I am inventive and resourceful with the Force. But strong? Ha. There are better ways to make me laugh. My raw potential doesn't even nudge practice dummies around. I can overawe approximately nobody.

So I need to learn. I need to learn every possible Force skill, Force talent, Force ability, lightsaber form, so that I can find an answer through knowledge and guile. Most folks in my weight class, talent level, pay grade? They're younger than me. They've spent less time in school than I have.

I've learned almost all I can from the Matukai, and now I'm starting to learn from the Blackguard. Masha told me that the Blackguard teach their agents, "Wilders" as they are called, the following skills: lightsaber combat, combat with the Force, battle meditation, military tactics and strategy, and mind tricks.

In my time with Grievous' squad, I learned squad tactics and strategy. Much as I might call my plan in the warehouse a failure, it was tactically sound. I found a way to minimize danger and maximize effectiveness of available personnel. Threat assessment...yeah, that was a problem. If I'd gotten the chance to fully chop off the guy's arm, that would have helped me.

I cannot rely on Skywalker's tactics or Grievous's. They rely on the presence of an overwhelmingly powerful juggernaut--themselves. I tried it in the warehouse and learned the hard way: I am not presently an overwhelmingly powerful juggernaut.

I was a combat medic for a year and I've only been doing the combat part to any significant degree for the last few months. I shouldn't expect to be better at it than people who've been doing it for years. The only thing I should expect myself to be better at is the mind.

Does that mean I'm not going to try to get stronger? Of course not. Being strong makes a lot of battles easy. My biggest strength, the biggest disparity in strength between me and the other folks in my weight class? It's my smarts, my ability to learn. So I'm going to kill them with my brain.

Related to the unrelated note: you can sit on the Council and not be a Master if your name is Ki-Adi-Mundi, who was granted a seat on the Council when he was still just a knight. At least, that was the case before the EU got nuked.

Hands on Deck

"How do you do it? I know you guys in the military division have an even bigger workload than us R&D nerds, so how do you find time for it all?" To say Cheriss asked Thrawn would be an undeserved compliment to her composure. Begging would likely be a more apt term.

"Might I ask what's spurred this on? You and Var Zheen have been handling things well enough last I checked." asked Thrawn, slightly caught off guard by his co-worker's distraught initiation of their conversation, though doing his level best to remain stoic and calm in the hopes some might rub off on the Shard.

"I mean, we're getting a lot done, but there's just so much. This quarter alone, we've had to revolutionize blaster combat for Force sensitive beings and decode the genetic make-up of the most fragile tree in the galaxy to keep magic lizards alive." Cheriss sunk deeper into her chair.

"Ah yes, the Ysalamiri. I've seen pictures of them in the reports." said Thrawn. "They're quite adorable. I wouldn't mind getting one for myself, if your Olbio tree substitutes reach that level of refinement."

"That's Var Zheen's project, but I'll pass it on." said Cheriss. "But he and I only have so much time in the day. We still need to look into shield tech, investigate anomalies in the Unknown regions, study ancient artifacts, and find ways to integrate half a dozen unique materials from across the galaxy into efficiency improving resources for the Abyss Watchers."

"He and you have a limited amount of time, but have you considered that a third person on your level would increase productivity by thirty-three percent?" asked Thrawn.

"Ugh, I have to work with a Givin all day, every day. Don't you start with the numbers now too." groaned Cheriss.

"Statistics aside, I manage so well because there are a number of colleagues to share missions with. Between myself, Grievous, HK-47, Xruk, The Silencer, Ventress, Jango Fett, and even Silas if we're truly pressed." said Thrawn. "Another person would hardly be amiss in our research division."

"I guess we got Fry, but he's new, paranoid, and specialized in intelligence and business more than research. Don't get me wrong, the man's a genius, but he never really has time to sit down and just work like me and Var Zheen do." grumbled Cheriss.

"If you want my advice, take some time off to find dedicated help. Someone who can just sit down and work, as you put it." suggested Thrawn.

"Oh yeah, let me just head on down to the local unemployed genius tree and pluck off a polymath." snarked Cheriss. "People of our caliber aren't exactly common, and the ones who do exist are all working for other organizations on long term projects. It would take more time to find someone than we'd save by getting them on board."

"Perhaps you might try Galen Erso." said Thrawn. "Apparently he was rather publicly accused of being a Seperatist spy not too long ago. Nothing's come of the charges last I checked, but between that and his imprisonment by the CIS, he's no longer attached to Zerpen Industries."

"Are… are you serious? They let Galen Erso go? Are they crazy?" Cheriss was shocked, and unlike Thrawn, she let it show. "He's a Talesan Fry kind of genius. Only not completely insane. And they fired him?"

"Apparently so. Associating with a genius wasn't worth that genius potentially being a CIS operative." said Thrawn.

"How do you even know about this?" asked Cheriss. "You seem like you have more important things to do than stalk the scientific community."

"The Grand Army of the Republic publishes a newsletter. It would be foolish not to take whatever free information your enemies give you, if just to see what they left out." said Thrawn, gesturing to the tablet he had been reading when Cheriss approached him. "It doesn't mention where he lives, only that he was accused of subterfuge and subsequently had his employment terminated. Best of luck scouring the planet to find him."

Cheriss grinned. "It won't even be an issue. I have my ways."

XXX

It had taken days, but Galvin Thorn had finally tracked down his quarry. He would admit, he had expected a request from Cheriss to be a fancy dinner or some such, not a manhunt, but he was all too willing to oblige. It always felt good to get some legitimate mercenary work instead of just glorified errands for his grandfather and cousin.

He decided to wait outside to get visual confirmation of his target, leaning against the wall to appear inconspicuous. Or at least as inconspicuous as someone wearing a green fur lined jacket and yellow trousers could look. Finally, Galvin perked up as the door opened.

"All I'm saying is think about it Galen." A man in a boring white military uniform exited the apartment, standing for a moment in the doorway. "That severance package might have been generous, but it won't keep you and Lyra well forever. Helical HyperCom might not be amazing, but it's a job at least. Best I can do with your refusal to work for the military."

"I'll think about it. And thank you again. For everything." Another voice answered, presumably Galen Erso, though Galvin couldn't see from his position.

"Think nothing of it." With that, the man departed, sparing a quick glance at Galvin's amazing outfit before averting his eyes just as quickly. Not surprising. The Zeltron fashion sense often left people jealous and speechless.

Alone once more, Galvin paused. His job was technically over. He had tracked down Galen Erso, and even confirmed the rumors that had led him here. It was entirely possible he'd take the other man's job offer and leave the planet before the Abyss Watchers could follow through on his work though. Galvin was briefly tempted to approach Galen Erso and make contact, before dismissing it out of hand. He had found Cheriss' genius scientist; his job was done as soon as he forwarded the address to Cheriss.

And any job well done deserved a celebration down at some local clubs, as per tradition. And Galvin hated to break tradition.

AN: So I watched Rogue One again recently, and Fun Fact: Galen Erso is currently unemployed, an issue I want to remedy. Originally Galvin did approach Galen and there was a whole conversation. Unfortunately, that conversation gave me writer's block for the better part of two weeks, so I scrapped it entirely.

Well I know what one of the write in actions we will be proposing for the coming turn will be... but really? Genius level scientist and unemployed? Anyway all of my support on recruiting him to our R&D teams, plus he should feel a lot better about working for us then other potential factions.

I too was surprised to see him unemployed during this exact year. Still though, Galen comes with three strings.

1. He's a staunch pacifist. Unless we want Darra 2: Electric Boogaloo, we probably shouldn't assign him to make us cool new blasters or otherwise weaponize his research.

2. Krennic really wants his help to build the Death Star. Right now it's subtle manipulations, but Rogue One opens with Krennic shooting Galen's wife and kidnapping him to complete the project at gunpoint. Worse, right now Galen doesn't suspect his old college buddy of anything and would trust Krennic with his life.

3. Lyra Erso is a pro and a con. On one hand, she's a lot more skeptical than her husband, and was the one to figure out Krennic's real plan. On the other, Galen was willing to actually defect to the CIS if she wanted him to. Getting her to like us is probably more important to recruiting Galen than getting him to like us.

Without Galen Erso on the death star project it wouldn't have it's weakness to be exploited in the first place I think so if we get him there might not be a weakness.

Without Galen Erso on the Death Star project, it never gets built. His research on kyber crystals as an energy source is why the thing works int he first place.

1. We have plenty of tech projects that aren't weapons. Of the ones pertaining to Erso's engineering specialty...personal shields are defensive, materials research tends towards defensive. The other half of our tech projects are biologically-based. I don't know any canon characters who would be unemployed biology-angled geniuses, but given Riphath's background in medical science...he might know a guy.

2+3. We tell Lyra Erso we're keeping an eye on Krennic and we have no intentions of weaponizing anything Galen works on. Some of it might end up as defensive equipment, but that's all still along the line of preserving life. A brief scan of her Wookieepedia page suggests that we might angle her towards investigating anomalies in the Unknown Regions, as she tends to be the "explorer" type.

Don't the general blue prints/concept work for the Death Star already exist?

The blueprints existed, which is why the architect/engineer Krennic is in charge. But the actual laser tech doesn't exist until Krennic tricks Galen into studying kyber crystals as an energy source. It's why he's such an important figure in the construction of the Death Star despite being so staunchly opposed to it.

I never said they were insurmountable things. He'd probably be one of the lowest maintenance Hero units we have. Just things to keep in mind.

Plaps has got em ATM...

mmm wonder if we could loot them?

Still clarification, did the power source needed to make the thing practical at all not exist or was it just the laser that didn't have a good power source?

Cause if the latter then I say why bother with the planet killer gun its a battleship the size of a moon.

The problem with Galen, is if we start taking Rouge 1 material, we've gotta dump Kyle Katarn and the original story of the Death Star plans. Now Kyle himself I don't give a crap, but the valley of the Jedi, and all the other stuff in the Jedi Academy games? Significantly more interesting then Galen Erso.

Hell, it even screws up other series. There was a specific mission in Battlefront 2 all about stealing the laser technology from the CIS, though that whole game is pretty incompatible with Clone Wars tbf.

Edit: Actually, it also even messes with the story behind the Maw facility, and the RnD that built both Death Stars and the Star Killer. Not the dude, but the ship. That i'd much rather keep. Quantum-Locked armor is awesome. And, y'know, it actually fits with the whole super-plot of the Ones and The Mother, which is already well established in this quest.

Man, it seems people just could not get enough of explaining the Death Star huh? Disney only has the most recent and shortest entry.

*SEETHING HATE INTENSIFIES* NOBODY GETS TO TALK SHIT ABOUT KYLE KATARN!

*cough* Errrr... anyway. My first exposure to Star Wars was Dark Forces (the original one with DOOM gameplay where in the VERY FIRST level you steal the plans of the Death Star). So... yeah. Kyle Katarn is my second most favorite Star Wars character.

He's okay I guess. Fairly interesting in the first Jedi Academy game, but the second with him as the protag? Real let-down. Not too much his fault, though I will admit being slightly annoyed by how easily he gets led around by the nose, but the game itself just didn't stand up to it's predecessor. Not too enthused about him now because there's no way he's going to be an asset in the quest. Too young, and too many of his Bad Ass points are from being trained for Imperial Spec Ops, which hopefully won't exist...

Ah, him. Credit, where credit due: Mister Galen Erso is a top notch scientist and when properly motivated a dangerous force.
Yeah, Luke needed the Force to get those torpedos in the hatch, but it was GALEN, not the Force that made this hatch so important (mugglers for the win).

I wouldn't mind him as our additional Science Hero, and besides, Abyss Watchers are much more morally clean than up-and-coming Palps empire. Not to mention that most of AWs RnD is later simplified and distributed to the masses/civilians/non-combatands in almost pro-pacifist style considering our affiliation with Council of Neutral Systems

I mean, no reason it can't still exist alongside Galen Erso. This whole quest is basically an unholy mishmash of Canon and Old EU stuff.

*Crawls out of basement/ritual chamber where he does his sacrifices to the RNG... still wearing his cultist robes* Unholy? Nothing unholy here! Nope! NO, SIR! Its all good and fine Star Wars here. NOT TOTAL INSANITY AND MISHMASH BASED ON THE RULE OF COOL AND RULE OF FUNNY! NO, SIR!

Rip's Scientist Candidates (Canon Info)
From the Journal of Riphath Althean:

Potential Candidates for the Biological and Exploratory Research Scientist Posting

Heard the Watchers were interested in bringing on some more research scientists, especially in biology and exploration. Look, the last time I did bench research was during my fellowship and that was more related to trauma surgery than anything else. All the same, I do my reading and keep up on the latest medical journals so I thought I'd scribble together a list of potential people we might send Recruiting at to see if we get any bites.

Auric and Rhyssa Graf: Auric's a cartographer. We know the Wookiee navigation guild. They might chat.
Elliam Baniora: Embryologist. Understands how things develop better than just about anybody.
Leo and Tepha Leonis: Agricultural scientists who got screwed over by the Trade Federation and who haven't been picked up by another organization.
Tuzin Gast: Xenobiologist. Pro: capable of thinking outside the box. Con: Thinks so far outside the box he might make a Talz who could make the calculations for a hyperspace jump in his head...or a Gamorrean who could do it.
Hali Ke: Genetics. Kaminoan. One of the big names in genetics.
Professor Mankuskett: Explorer-biologist. Would work with the Grafs, probably.
Pippa Rosheed: Infectious Disease / Pharmacology. Works with Lexi Fernandin's scouting crew. Okay, okay, I should admit to myself that the idea of running out to be an exploration doc with a company going through Wild Space or the Unknown Regions would be nice. Maybe I'm just a little rattled after that fight yesterday.
Spero, or really, one of a lot of different Ho'Din: An entire race of botanist / healers.
Rachott, Mal Ree Ohr, or really, one of a bunch of different folks working with Republic Mobile Surgical Units: Were I interested in being on the front lines of the war proper and getting paid a lot less to interact primarily with clones, I'd be one of them. I'm glad I'm one of me.
Ull Haber: Look, I wouldn't have listed him because he's a CIS propagandist slandering the clones, but it's all my friends from Byblos Medical Academy are talking about.
Klorr Vilia: He works with Ithorians. They say he's helped them develop the best euphoriant since Slick, with effects similar to Algarine Torve Weed.
Huff Zinga: Gungan Zoologist. Grievous told us about Binks. Every list needs its joke, right? Ask any pilot about Lieutenant Kettch and they'll chuckle.

I've saved my favorite for last: Halka Four-Den. Leader of an eight person research team. Went to Dagobah shortly before the Clone Wars. Hasn't been heard back from in a while. If she survived, she's probably a bona-fide badass by now.
