Lights... Camera... ACTION!!: A Hollywood Quest

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi Magoose here one of the guys helping Duke.

So we have some bad news.

The quest has been canceled as duke does not want to write it anymore.

I'm going to ask if I can take over for it, because I like this quest, and it would be a shame to kill it
TBF, Mags, you have been doing a lot of the heavylifting for the quest, so this will be in good hands. :)

To be clear to everyone, this is just me burning out on imagination of the quest, since my muse has been hitting me over the head a lot with so many different ideas that I just can't find myself too interested in this.

I'll still hang out here, though, since this still does have a sepcial place in my heart.

I'd like to thank you all for making this a wonderful experience while it lasted.

I'd also like to thank @Magoose, @Fluffy_serpent, and @Martin Noctis for doing so much to help prepare and write this quest. I couldn't have done it without you all. :D

I'll see you all around.

With so many regards, Duke William Of.

I would wait for next turn so we can see first what George has done with his digital camera and see if it would be better to build an in-house company like THX and Skywalker Sound or use George's camera as incentive for the camera companies later to accept a purcahse and get super profitable.
Yes but then we would lose our auto-complete and that opens the door for further disaster like with Kodak. Buy Canon due to their advanced lens technology or something, not using this auto turn freebee is a waste.

@Magoose Would purchasing a company this turn use an autopass? Cause I remember with one of our previous autopasses with the Bruce Lee Memorial Gym that we still had to roll for Linda Lee's approval and that was not subject to the autopass.

Also I really want to purchase Polaroid for the branding and to give them a redemption arc. If George makes a camera that has a superior lens to Canon then buying Canon is superfluous.

On that we can agree on.

There's also a bit of a potential misplay where if the George action has him wanting to create a new subsidiary focused on commercial camera production then buying any existing camera company would be money lost. George did after all create THX and Skywalker Sound which absolutely dominate the sound industry.

Another option I'm considering to replace the media prep is doing some charity work with the Mariel Boatlift.

But polaroid is a popular world renown brand. If we buy them we can paste their logo on Lucas' camera and have instant market recognition instead of the more risky route of starting our own brand. Also Polaroid still made good money from film untill the '90 and has large production capabilities for manufacturing. So even George would see that this a better choice.

Okay if Magoose says yes on the camera purcahse being autopassed then I'll switch it in.

[X] Plan Lucasfilms Strikes Back

Man, I remember when I was a kid and the Oscars and award season actually meant something. Then the Marvelization happened.

Even if we break the oscars over our knee, I hope we can replace it with something just as meaningful as the Academy Awards once were.

@Kaiser Chris TBH, if this is possible I would aim higher and go for Apple here, since its IPO was OTL $102 million we could just pay $400-500 million and take it all for ourselves... So we don´t have to trust Magoose dice in December

Here is the thing... Camera lenses are very complex, very expensive, and require a lot of know-how to build them... I am pretty sure that George has focused on the Digital Aspect, so getting the best camera lenses producers is still a solid investment...
Also I really want to purchase Polaroid for the branding and to give them a redemption arc. If George makes a camera that has a superior lens to Canon then buying Canon is superfluous.
TBH, there is nothing that prevents us from acquiring both Canon and Polaroid... One for its lens technology, and another for its brand recognition (which is very relevant when you consider the immediate nature of digital cameras) and access to a profitable market niche until the 90s...

I don´t think this is a good idea... Basically, Magoose told us that if we wanted to get the Lucasfilm PR Department going we needed to become better at dealing with the Press, and since we are going to get very soon an "Upgrade Lucasfilm" action, getting the Being Better action done saves us an AP in the future...

Neat. Looks like it's time for Evil Dead.

I kinda want to do Gophering. Get Bruce involved in the scut work of a movie production so he has at least a basic understanding of every job on set. I sort of expected us to take much this earlier. Like when we were solidifying our image as a man of the people.

They went public in december. How are we going to buy shares that have not entered the market. Like I'm all for it but lets have a bit of patience.

I'm all for it but lets wait and see what George has before we go on a tech shopping spree. Like we know that he needs good brand recognition but maybe his lenses are that good where we don't need Canon (propably not ,but hey wierder things have happend in this quest). So lets wait untill next turn.

Well, if George has invented the Digital Camera this turn, we don't need a camera company, really. The parts (other than lenses) are very different. And name brand, while nice, isn't really an issue if we are introducing a whole new technology- and the company is known for its amazing film visuals. What we need is a data storage or computer chip company for storage of the files or more processing power to allow for higher resolutions.

So, Western Digital (which is worth $112 million in 1993) or Intel (Which is worth approx $433 mil at the end of the year).

As to Apple- we could go for that. They are very innovative, though they don't have chip plants or a chip R&D section. Not sure why we would try and pay 400-500 million when they are worth 102 at IPO. IPOs generally are a high point of value for a while- not a low point. Trying to buy a company for 4-5 times what the underwriters think its worth before it makes IPO doesn't really make sense.

We're buying Polaroid for their brand recognition not only for their cameras, also these cameras continued to be profitable untill the '90 so don't undersell them. Everone is talking about film as if it's about to die next week, like yes digital is the future but we're just in '80 and we still have a decade ahead of us

But why are we interested in buying companies in the first place? Is it merely to make money in the camera industry?

That would be nice, but the reason we are interested in buying a company is to further George's passion in developing new techniques and technologies to further movie magic. And to help Lucasfilm push the boundaries of moviemaking. We need their R&D capabilities and their manufacturing abilities- not the brand name.

So, would paying hundreds of millions for the name "Polaroid" and its dwindling (but still profitable) cameras further that? Maybe a bit if we stretch- but not nearly as much as a tech company that would help with the development of CGI and digital cameras. The barrier to those technologies are electronic hardware related. It also would help us with bringing something to the table with Apple and with our own idea for a computer gaming division.

So, for a multitude of reasons- buying Intel or Western Digital would be a better choice.

Edit: @Magoose Would Intel be able to be bought for $450 million? And how much would Western Digital cost if it could be purchased?

-[X]Being Better: You are going to be better at the whole Media thing. DC: 60

Substantially similar to Kaiser Chris's plan, but replaced having fun with purchasing Intel. Did not want to replace the Media improvement because Bruce really needs it and an autopass helps avoid the nightmare scenario of a critical fail.

Went with purchasing a company this turn rather than the having fun option because of the auto-pass. Chose Intel for its technology and manufacturing- it can really help in camera, CGI, computers, etc. All things we are interested in and may help with Lucasfilm. Also, Intel is very profitable so that helps, too.
