Movie Pitch: Basil of Baker Street: The Lost Colony
overmind
Ruler of the Swarm
You know, when Basil of Baker Street was all done, it struck me as a bit of a waste that it would just end like that. I mean, we had the entire works of Eve Titus to work with, and unlike OTL version with Disney, this one was an unabashed success, showing the true versatility of animation, as well as an amazing tale that could be in dark tone but without being outright horror or mature for grown-ups. I thought that it would be an excellent idea if we could try and make a TV Show about Basil's further adventures.
Yeah, that idea lasted all of an hour.
Don't get me wrong, there is the material to be used, just...not enough if we want a TV Show. In the end we would have to either create new original adventures or "borrow" from Sherlock Holmes' adventures in order to find new storylines for the entire series. And hopefully you can forgive me but I wanted to be a bit more original than that. However, seeing the works of Ms. Titus, I figured that we had enough of a material to try and make more movies, more sequels to the story, thereby creating our first animation film franchise.
Big problem has been that I can't find the books to read, there is hardly any information about what the follow up books are about save a couple of lines describing the entire adventure, and an audio book I found only had the first chapter that had mostly Basil and Dawson just speaking about chasing Ratigan.
Yeah, apparently Ratigan is still alive in the books.
Anyways, I figure that I can try and form some sort of story from what little I've been able to find in the sequel books. it's what Disney (and us) did with the first book after all.
Thus, I give you:
Set Up: Based on the children's book Basil and the Lost Colony from the series Basil of Baker Street by Eve Titus, the main characters are all mice and rats living in Victorian London. After Ratigan's death, Basil and Dawson now will have to deal with the involvement of the government stopping him from getting involved in a series of thefts, all which point to a single culprit; Captain Doran, Ratigan's former subordinate. In order to see justice done, Basil will have to travel outside London, chasing after Captain Doran to a location unseen before, known only as "The Lost Colony".
Director: Brad Bird
Composer: Ennio Morricone
A.N.: I think that this movie should be done sooner rather than later in order to strike while character is still fresh in the minds of everyone who saw the movie. Then again, we could also try and wait for a bit and then surprise everyone with the release. Our advantage relies in that we still have the material, but Disney might get wise to our techniques soon. I selected Brad Bird since I want to see what he can do when he tries to make a sequel rather than trying an original film. If we make a later sequel i'm thinking on letting Don give it a shot, that way we could keep the franchise fresh by having different takes that still follow the characters' stories.

Basil and Dawson are working on a new case when they are interrupted in the midst of finding the culprit by the intervention of new forces led by Basil's older brother; Macrinus. Both brothers bicker, showing the animosity between them, with Macrinus telling Basil to stay out of the case, as this was now an official government investigation. Basil does not list and draws Dawson in order to find just what it is that they're trying to find.
They infiltrate the government building in Downing Street, where Basil uses a myriad of disguises to get inside, while Dawson makes sure to distract the authorities as long as possible. Basil manages to enter the archives and find what he's looking for; the current case which involves an individual known as Captain Doran...Rattigan's former Lieutenant. Basil is shocked, and then startled as Macrinus speaks behind him, knowing he would try to come. Both sides argue, with Basil complaining of Macrinus once more trying to control his life, while Macrinus insists that this is not something Basil should be involved with. Guards arrive, leading to a chase where both Basil and Dawson have to use all their wits to escape.
Once out, the team look at Doran's file, finding information on him, what he's been doing, and his current expedition to find some sort of "Lost Colony" in the arctic. Basil decides to search for him, part stubbornness to complete their last case, and part spitefulness towards Macrinus. The travel is arduous, eventually arriving at a port in the frontier from where they learn of more details on Doran and his expedition further north. There they meet Aput, a native who can guide them on the way, though he warns them of the dangers of the trail.
During the travel there are many dangers and hijinks, among them small tribes of "Blizzard Cats" as Aput calls them, but they manage to get to the location the native knew of; the community of Nunangat, that does not look like much at first, but Dawson soon points to an incongruity that Basil researches; there should not be that many people in a place that has little to no chances to feed that many. Though Aput tries to waylay them, they eventually find a secret path to a hidden location; a grander community...one that as soon as they enter they find themselves captured, Aput included.
After a while from being imprisoned, they are taken to the Chief's home, where they meet Aklaq, the new Chief...and Aput's brother. Alongside him is Captain Doran, his new adviser. After seeing the brothers bicker among themselves, Basil tries to convince Aklaq about captain Doran, but the brother does not listen, and they are brought once more to their cells. Once on the cells Aput tries to explain the situation in the hidden community, though Basil had already deduced that this was the "Lost Colony", one that vanished after joining with the hidden community of Nunangat.
They work out a plan to escape, and confront Aklaq in his rooms after knocking out his guards. The confrontation between brothers is fierce, but both Basil and Dawson intervene, helping them speak to each other, revealing Doran had actually had taken over the community after killing the previous Chief, their uncle, and keeping Aklaq as a puppet. His plan is simply to exploit them and their secret gold mine to become rich and return once he had all the riches. Aklaq did not say anything to protect his brother once Doran left.
After the sibling reconcile, Basil mentions how Doran leaving does not fit his profile, with Dawson recalling some stories about Doran when he was in Afghanistan, rumors about him making his fortune by killing communities outright. The group run to Doran's home to find it abandoned, but with hints as to his plans to destroy Nunangat. Basil follows the tracks as he chases him, while Dawson helps the siblings in finding the explosives, leading to both a chase scene and a race against the clock where they are both stopped at the nick of time.
In the final scene, both Basil and Dawson see Captain Doran being taken back to London by the Royal Guards, as Macrinus once more approaches Basil, both sides arguing a bit, before Basil thanks him for his help in bringing Doran to London. Macrinus is surprised, but accepts it in somewhat bashfully, while he thanks Basil for catching Doran...and saying in a low tone how he's happy he's unharmed. This moment is broken as both siblings soon find something new to bicker about, with Dawson just chuckling at them.

Detective Basil of Baker Street: He is a take-off of the classic Sherlock Holmes character, modeling his career after the famous detective's. Basil is a brilliant, plucky and tenacious mouse who refuses to back down no matter what stands against him once he decides to it. He comes off as a jack-of-all-trades, showing skill in areas such as science, history, and disguise, not to mention being physically capable. However he can also be prickly and self-centered as well as very emotional and operatic, becoming very moody if things do not go his way or if the situation looks dire.
Played By: Barrie Ingham
Doctor David Q. Dawson: Dr. Dawson is a bumbler who has a good heart and has joined Basil on his adventures and investigations as his partner. He previously served as the Queen's sixty-sixth Regiment in Afghanistan, before finally retiring to a more "normal" life. Dawson helps in both giving support and holding back his friend when he goes a bit too far into his investigation. During the adventure, he manages to help Basil in healing the brothers' disagreements.
Played By: Val Bettin
Captain Doran: He is Rattigan's former Lieutenant, who took over his syndicate once his boss died at Basil's hands. A former Captain in the Bangalore Pioneers, he's a deft hand at managing politics and presenting a respectable front, making him a more difficult opponent o sus out due to his connection with the upper class. He's managed to finance an expedition on search of a "Lost Colony" for supposedly archeological reasons, yet both Basil and Macrinus suspect him of more.
Played By: Colin Baker
Alternate: Christopher Lee
Fidget the Bat: A peg legged bat and Professor Ratigan's right-hand man. Fidget is a cowardly, greedy minion in the employ of Professor Ratigan. He is somewhat forgetful, as he left his hat and Ratigan's list (which allows Basil to track him down and find his hideout, respectively) when he ran away the first and second time, respectively. Despite this, he is also cunning; he tends to use stealth to carry out the tasks given to him by Ratigan. And in spite of his physical hardships, he's still quite scrappy. He isn't a very good speaker either.

Macrinus of Downing Street: He is Basil's older brother, a man of great influence and intellect in the government. Though he and Basil tend to clash whenever they meet, in the end, Macrinus loves his younger brother and wants him to be safe.
