Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

The problem is that there is no viable alternative to crx.

I hate being fashion Hitlers private Gestapo as much as the next guy but there is simply nothing else.

Gu Tai involves a marriage Ling Qi doesnt want. She didnt even want the interview. Otherwise, exploring ancient ruins for loot and knowledge, part Tomb Raider part Magos Explarator part Monster Hunter sounds awesome. If they had offered to adopt us or even better simply offered a normal vassal pledge, I believe this option would lead.

The Bai option is straight out. If not for our sake than at the very least for the sake of Meizhen.

And the sect/empire hasnt offered anything beyond being a debtslave until our student loan is picked up. No wonder they havent produced anything worthwhile in a while, the greatest Clans seem to have first pick of talented minor / non-nobles disciples, approaching the most talented early when their loyalty is fairely cheap.

Waiting till green or till after getting into the inner sect, meaning till a disciple is proven, is a low risk approach that ensures that the sect wont waste any ressources on a failure, however, as CRXs tactic shows, risks other factions calling dibs. When we turn green and we are offered a position we will be talking to a total rando, who never cared for us before and is now pitted against the offer from a girl for whom we fought and bled ((and stole) a lot) and who invested in us for month, both in ressources and personal time.

Tldr,
We are most likely become Crxs vassel, not because we like the job so much but because we are dont have any other viable alternative.

Conclusion, the empire needs a fucking HR department.

In real world terms:

CRX invests in vocational training, recruitment scholarships, therefore investing in her own future with people like Gan and us.

The sect and empire waits for their unicorn. The extremely dedicated and efficient guy with a masters degree and 8 years of relevant work experience who desires nothing, absolutely nothing, more than to fill an entry level position in your company. (people like fu and medic su)

(crafting su is likely going to go hermit)

Eh considering the fact that we have done precious little active investigation into what options there are and haven't even been a member/cultivator for more than a single year I have serious doubts that our options are as limited as you make them out to be. We have no idea what for example becoming a "core" disciple or personal apprentice to one of the sect elders would include (or how likely that is) or what possible positions there are in the imperial agencies and how to get them (and their benefits/costs) nor have truly explored alternative options than those offered to us by our friends. It might well be possible that instead of a marriage the Gu would be happy to go for a less personal alliance in return for letting us settling in their area (or Han Jian doing something like that) or that CRX is okay with us accepting a "lesser" position in return for more freedom.

We are at the very start of our (and that of our friends) cultivating lives and had so far little chance of proving ourselves to anyone not directly connected to us/our age bracket so I think it is far too early to act like everybody but CRX ignores us... Once again we have been a year in the sect (and even less time as a halfway promising student) so I really don#t get why you expect that we have seen even a fraction of what there is to be had.

(And then there is of course the fact that our closeness with Mei and CRX could easily be interpreted in us already having chosen our "faction"/future...)

I personally think taht at the very least we should wait till after the tournament/being part of the inner sect before making a decision like that.

Also staying in Sect are opportunity to find other options.
Yeah, deciding our future without being a Cultivator for a single year, before we're even fifteen is like a middle-schooler making decisions about the rest of their lives. After all, cultivation doesn't increase intelligence or common sense so the "breakthrough into Green means you're adult" is more of a traditional coming-of-age thing than reality. No fifteen-year-old is trusted to make their own decisions about anything important and for good reason.

Elder Sister Yanmei is quite talented, having reached cyan at the age of twenty two.
If Yanmei is considered talented for reaching cyan at 22, what happens if we do it at 17, only spending 2 years in Green?

It's not 3, it's 5.

There is no real preparations we can do this week for next week breakthrough, but hope that next week will have less minors that we'll be interested by so we can go closed door and do 6 actions instead of 5. However, past incidence have shown we'll never not have at least 2 key minors we won't be willing to let go of.
Well, most of the reason I want to do Alectai's plan is because of Fu Xiang, which I don't want to wait for Green for because it simply feels like dragging my heels from my perspective though that may not be the case for others and because it dips into breakthrough and I want to see what that is like.

Time for the ultimate backstab.

[x] Plan Breakthrough: Start!

Don't like not getting the personal talk with CRX one bit, but the fear that only putting in two actions in now will make us put off the rest is kinda getting to me.

Why would that happen? It makes no sense, and runs counter to most quester logic that I know of, and the general "Let's fucking breakthrough already!" sentiment going around.

E: I'm also still leery of Start! because it doesn't specify which breakthrough its going to attempt or how it wants to do the various recoveries. Is it all in on Green? All in on Bronze? Like... massive question marks.

It also doesn't do Zhengui, which leaves me cold in the soul and it doesn't have a solid chance to cultivate AE.

...yes. Massive question marks.

Haven't I gone over this already? With you, personally?

Because the simple fact that the breakthrough was losing means that sentiment isn't actually that strong and, in case only a single of the actions or even none at all actually succeeds, the dent made into the full Breakthrough is miniscule enough that it doesn't really do much to counteract how much of an action hog a full breakthrough is.
Especially since tempting minors never ever really stop being a thing.

Breakthrough:Start gives me three of the six minor actions I really want to see done this turn, including the two I don't think can be put off at all, while also putting us a large step towards getting the breakthrough done and thereby making the rest much less likely to screw with our minor action economy as hard again.
That's in all honesty enough, now that I have stewed on it for a while.

6 minors I want, 5 minor actions. Typical. :(

Breakthrough: Start! would be better if it had the Zhengui(or Cai) action instead of Li Suyin but attaching to training at the vent would be silly so I can understand why it doesn't. Last stop before Breakthrough Week 2.0 doesn't have the puzzle box but does have the five others I want... Hum, I am happy either way so I guess I will only vote if another plan seems like it may have any chance.

I wonder what's the tally at now

Just like how we never that got Attack Art?

[x] Plan Breakthrough: Start!

There are always gonna be minor actions to worry about. Simple as that.
Except not all minors are created equal? That plan ignores our last chance to befriend Cai more before we have to answer her on whether or not we'll swear to become her Vassal.

Just checking, but I assume it's impossible or unwise to invite Cai to the vent?

Oh for heaven's sake, I go to sleep and can't defend my plan any more and it goes from a comfortable lead to getting its arse kicked.

Especially by a plan that arguably wastes our medicine by using it on only four Breakthrough attempts.

Look, I've explained my position exhaustively, but I'll reiterate it again. I do not feel that passing up the Zeqing option is a good idea--we've already had the schedule disrupted (She was 'Busy' last week after all), and if what she wanted to talk to us with wasn't important, she could have just talked to us at our next scheduled meeting. Right there, that rules out doing a six Major week.

Why do I dislike the idea of doing four Breakthrough attempts? Because our medicine is precious, and I don't feel like "Get some kind of breakthrough right now" is necessary. We're in the veritable position of power here right now--for once, we don't have a sword of damocles hanging over our head. Arguments have come up about "Oh but there'll always be more Minor actions so we shouldn't bother cleaning up" is ridiculous, because it completely ignores context. We had a high tension mission that kind of backfired due to enemy action, so hanging out with Meizhen rather than letting her brood on it for two weeks seems practical. Zhengui just broke through after a month of vision questing, and putting him aside for two weeks seems a bit nasty.

I can understand people not liking Renxiang--though I don't feel the same way, because I don't see it as "Double CRX" like some of the detractors are calling it, and more "Main Story Progression + Cai Renxiang".

Finally, the only other controversial point that I noted after waking up, people complaining that AE is potentially double cultivated.

I defend it by pointing out that it all but guarantees we get a level in it as a special bonus if we luck out and get two successful Breakthrough rolls. Especially combined with the EPC bonus from doing the Fu Xiang favor (Which we've put off long enough--we have two rerolls on Larceny now for heaven's sake and some decent tools now. Waiting two more weeks to get one more auto success is ridiculous).

In the event we fail both breakthroughs? It ensures that we're Peak again in both fields before next turn's all in attempt. (Regardless of detractors glossing this over to attack the point). In the event we fail one? We recover and get progress in an Art. If we succeed both? We get another level in an Art that we've seen is capable of fighting against Meizhen's water control nonsense just now.

Did I miss anything? Any concerns or whatnot? Do note that the second Cultivation action is something that I'm willing to adjust--especially since many of the people who nagged me to add it aren't even voting for it.

Just checking, but I assume it's impossible or unwise to invite Cai to the vent?
It's not JUST that we shouldn't invite Cai to the vent without checking with SuSu, but ALSO the major that mentions the vent says that we're training there with Su Ling and Yrsillar has said that we aren't close enough to Cai to train with her; so it isn't attaching the minor to something it's related to.

Honestly, I really wonder if Last Stop Before Breakthrough is legal with how it attaches minors. We've never attached a minor to a Cultivate on our Own major as far as I'm aware. I guess I can kinda see the Zhengui minor being attached to one, but I really don't see the Zeqing minor being attached to one being legal at all.

Rise of the Sage: Chapter 1
Rise of the Sage

Chapter 1

From She Who Was were the bones of firmament were forged

From which came stability of form.

From the breath of He Who Was, came motion and time

From which came disparity and growth.

All the world forged for the sake of their children.

The final gift and responsibility.

It is said that the years of the first age were beyond counting. From the days that the Last Children awoke in wooded hollow and mountain glen, they were hunted, and none recorded their suffering.

Yet from our Father, we were granted cunning, and from our Mother, steadfastness. In that darkness, the secret of cultivation was discovered. That by consuming the bones of our Mother and the breath of our Father, strength to stand against our hunters could be gained.

Let nothing further be said of that time.

The second age was born with the dilution of blood. Humans made pacts with beasts, and our bloodlines were mingled with dragons. Kingdoms rose and fell, and man warred with man, for the first time unshackled by fear.

The Eight Serpent Queens of One Thousand Lakes who warred with the Sunflower Demons of the West

The Merry Kings of Canyon and River, forever raiding the Golden Fields of the Sun

The Secret Lords of Hill and Tree, tall and horned, disdainful of those who shared not their bloodlines.

The Captain Kings of the northern shores, living more on water than land.

These tribes and more stood astride the world, declaring their greatness to the skies, but we shall not speak of them, not yet.

Instead, let our attention come to the Celestial Peaks. Pillars of the World, and Mount Tai, the greatest of mountains, higher than the clouds, scraping the heavens. Land of Dragons.

Here the domain of beasts had never ended. Mighty demons ruled over their mountains and terrible spirits haunted the vales, and the proud and untouchable Dragons of Heaven ruled uncaring over all. Here there were no kings, only petty chieftains paying tribute to inhuman lords.

In one tribe, whose name is long since lost, there a child was one day born to the first wife of the tribes chieftain. On that day, great chaos came, the moon came to cover the sun, transforming day into darkness. The demons of the mountain raged and reveled, shaking the firmament. The people, seeing this as sign of ill omen, came to the chief, and demanded that the child be cast out, lest his ill fortune infect the tribe.

The chieftain did not resist this as he might have. In the chaos of the inverted day, his beloved wife had died, and in his heart he blamed the child who had weakened her so. The child was taken to the priests to be anointed with oils and paint, while prayers were said over him, dedicating his life to the spirits. The child was then placed in a basket of woven twigs. Taken far from the tribes village by their fastest climber, he was placed among the highest branches of the tallest tree, which stood closest to the peak, an offering to the gods of the mountains.

It happened, that at this time, a conflict had occurred in the court of the Dragon Patriarch. His second son had offered him great offense, though the particulars of the matter remain unknown. The young dragon was struck down for his temerity and his mother, Tianjing had raged at the punishment, injuring several others among the court. The Patriarch was merciful however and, still bearing some affection for Tianjing, merely exiled her for eight and hundred years.

Thus was it that Tianjing, whose white scales shone like the finest jade, whose claws were as spears and whose breath was the storm, descended upon the base earth from the palaces of the dragons among the highest clouds.

Still furious, she settled on the mountain peaks, lightning striking all about in response to her rage. Demons and spirits fled her presence, and trees were reduced to splinters. There was only one presence who did not flee her.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was the child, wailing as the wind rose around him and thunder rumbled in the sky. Tianjing heard his cries, for a dragons senses are far greater than a mans, but in her heart, there was no pity. Lightning struck the child to silence his wails.

Yet his cries were not silenced. Though the basket was reduced to ash, though the tree was splintered. The child lived, lightning playing over his milk white skin and burned in his eyes.

This in truth, drew the dragons attention, for her bolts were powerful, and even one of her kind would be injured by her wrath. She moved to examine the child, turning him over in her claws.

Though frail of body, the child was mighty in spirit. To Tianjing, whose eyes could see beyond base material, she could see something of great interest. The child had not resisted her lightning, for his flesh was as soft as any humans. Rather, he had refined it. Despite his youth the child's core and channels were open and clear, pure beyond any she had seen.

The child seemed to hold no fear either, held in the vast claws of a dragon, he reached up, grasping at the silver beard which grew from her chin, gurgling happily as a child well fed is want to do.

If you wish to discover what occurred when the Dragon Matriarch turned her attention to the child, please continue to the next installment.

Many people just don't want to delay by taking two AE actions and the favor. It's a disagreement in principle.

Did you even read it? Or are you just attacking me on principle? I just pointed out that "It only becomes a double AE if we succeed both times, and in exchange for doing a slightly suboptimal choice, we get a bonus art level?"

And if we succeed both times, we're ahead enough that we have a virtually guaranteed chance to double breakthrough next week when we go all in with my schedule.

Otherwise? Those two AE checks are bad luck protection. We only train AE if we don't need to cultivate Spiritual or Physical back up to Peak.

I'm starting to develop a (irrational) dislike of Breakthrough Start because I'd really like to breakthrough green and bronze in the same week and breakthrough start will almost certainly prevent that, wheras 2.0 has a good chance of getting us a 2/3 of the way to one and getting a double breakthrough next week.

You know what I'm going to vote for it. If Cai had waited a damn week and not stole our action we'd have been fine with going six action breakthrough this week and doing Zequing with our 1 minor and given the push I'm going to say we'd be fine doing the full 6 action breakthrough with all the meds next week.

@Alectai I'd prefer to switch one minor (Zhengui?) to the puzzlebox and I'm not that sold on the double cultivation but I'll vote for it.

[X] Plan: Last stop before Breakthrough Week 2.0

Especially by a plan that arguably wastes our medicine by using it on only four Breakthrough attempts.
I think you have a misunderstanding somewhere about the medicines. My plan uses both medicines with near-peak efficiency. Milk of Mother Earth is used with 100% efficiency as long as it gets to affect a failure, and we are highly likely to get at least one failure with 4 attempts - 87% likely, to be more precise. Can we squeeze a bit more efficacy out by doing 5 or 6 breakthrough actions? Sure, but the difference amounts to a fraction of an action; it isn't worth burning the minors that it would cost. As for Blood of Father Sky, it scales linearly with the number of breakthrough rolls we make, and another 1 or 2 breakthrough actions would probably give us an average of 1 extra breakthrough roll. That comes to an extra 5% chance of turning a failure into a success, which is worth something like 10-15% of an action. Again, it isn't nothing, but it isn't much either.

Point being, the plan uses our pills with 80-90% efficiency, and trying for that last bit is generally not going to be worth the problems that arranging it would cause.

Hell, your own plan has a 36% chance of double cultivating AE, which would waste half an action; that is an expected 18% of an action wasted. Training AE right now also wastes the spiritual successes that we would get from the black pool, which comes out to a roughly 20% waste per AE action that we end up taking. All in all, the waste there is of the same scale as what we would waste by using the breakthrough pills at less-than-100%-power.

On that day, great chaos came, the moon came to cover the sun, transforming darkness into day.

Wow, I love it! Can't wait for more installments!

It's not "bad luck protection", it's outright crazy. We're at 41/100 on AE (after Yrsillar adds the 5 other bonus successes from last week). In your plan, by doing the favor we're pretty much certain to get another 30 bonus success from stealth/larceny checks, so now we're at an effective 71/100 before we roll. One roll should be enough to get that; if we don't, we'll be amazingly close. So the second AE roll (and there's a roughly 30% chance there WILL be a second AE roll) will not only be at HALF dice, but almost all (if not all) of the successes will go towards Qi. It's just incredibly inefficient.
