Blood, Sweat, and Tears (WH40k Design Bureau)

Strife to the second, Courante to the first, and ancient to the fourth.

If the ancient ship needs a name, I've been thinking "Sacred Legacy".

Long Arm Heavy Frigate
I put together another model, this time of the Long Arm. I'm not really happy with the detail work (or more precisely the paucity of it), but here it is:

A closeup of the top Farstrike lances (by far the most detailed part of the model). Realistically, they should be concealed in armored domes, but then they wouldn't be recognizable as Farstrikes, and that's no fun.

I see you basically took a Turbulent-class and Calavanized it. I was thinking about doing some drawings of the Warhawk hull ships myself and instead decided to do an "evolution" on the Corvette that Warer did a while back.

I was thinking about massively expanding the behind of that Corvette and elongated the front portion while at the same time slimming and broadening it so that it tapered into the prow. But hey, nothing says we and Calixis couldn't have arrived at the same silhouette for a Heavy frigate.

I'm not really seeing it? I mean, they're both Imperal-ish warships with blocky profiles that don't narrow down in the middle like most canon escorts seem to, but I copied those features from the Resolute design, not the Turbulent. I definitely did look at the Turbulent (specifically the single image on Lexicanum), but honestly the deciding factor in the profile was the need for all the weapon turrets on the top to properly superfire. I don't know what the Turbulent's top profile looks like, but my model tapers down more (in steps) along the side profile. It also tapers down when seen from above:

Turn Eight Construction Results, Strategy Phase Begins
It was a time of firsts. Heady days of progress and payoff as long running or important projects were released for duty by their builders.

First among them was the Strife. Built from the ruins of one of the first clashes of the Crusade it brought new life to the bones of that old ship. No longer a cargo ship it instead proudly bore over a thousand combat parasites into combat. From the teardrop of the Savior Multirole to the gun studded brick that was the Harbinger her complement would be enough to dictate the progression if not pace of any battle she was sent into be it a naval clash or a planetary campaign.

For more than a decade the industrial power of Calavar had slaved away to expand the commercial dockyard that had formed the core of the naval production of the world, and had provided the opportunity for such a move in the first place. Vessels had been regularly launched from the relatively new installation for the entirety of the Crusade despite it's original purpose as machinery was turned to the business of war. Now little remained of that original structure: broken up, rearranged, and replaced with equipment to remove bottlenecks in the production of the proper warships that the Crusade now relied on.

But most of all, above the Light Cruiser scaled escort carrier, above the combat carrier, and above even that of the finally rebuilt industrial node, there was the christening of the Ancient ship. Pried from a wandering tomb and touched up as best was possible by the most experienced and venerable Cult Mechanicus members available, the Sacred Legacy once more flew through the void under her own power at the direction of a Human crew. Despite the inability of the most learned of the Omnissiah's followers to grasp "how" the vessel's systems worked it was much easier to determine how to move enough power to the black boxed components in order to get them to function.
Living quarters were crammed wherever they could be fit, tearing out the servitor bays that had previously served to repair and run the equipment under the direction of the fantastically small command crew. Only proven and commended individuals were chosen to serve on this most precious relic for it's first voyage. Taken from all over the fleet the Sacred Legacy was already possessed of one of the most experienced crews in the fleet. It would be less of a question of training than familiarizing themselves with their systems and new crew. Further, the red cloaks of the Martian Brotherhood featured prominently among the crew. Not only were there comparatively vast numbers of learned members of the Adeptus Mechanicus but many of the crew were inculcated into their ranks on a provisional level. The better to tend to the Machine they served to prevent the further loss of Knowledge that was contained in it's structure and processors.

In order to safeguard such a find the Magi of Lexicalum sent forth a pair of their carriers to safeguard the vessel. It was only their holy duty and not even the recent shift in ideology could work so comprehensively as to erode the necessity of such an act.

From the questionably loyal members of the Dark Star Alignment comes a small flood of combat equipment, ranging from Lemans and Chimeras to Orkified Lances and Engines to an Army of various types of heavy infantry armor.

[Gain:
2x IG Armored Core/Mechanized Infantry, Heavy Artillery, Anti-air
2x Looted Lances (Battery 3, Medium Range. 3M)
1x Looted Engines (Accel 3, Maneuver 2. 4M)
1x Elite Infantry Core/Mechanized Infantry, Armor, Air Support]

Lord Admiral: It's good to see that you could make it. With all the self celebration going on with the civilian leadership I wasn't sure that you would make it to set our strategy going forward.

Lativa is less under siege than it is being heavily raided. Our ships can keep most of them away from the planet in games of maneuver in the outer system but the enemy forces are seemingly self sufficient on a diet of metals and flesh for their mobile manufactorums. And the concentration of force required to eliminate them is difficult to achieve as they are inhabiting many of the same regions feral Orks do, riling them up and forcing our armies to protect the nearby population centers. In similar terms, the need to keep our ships over Lativa is leading to bolder Ork movements around the neighboring systems that will need to be repressed if possible. Before they finish organizing.
Metalrenda has been subjugated by Legcutta. This provides the Kommando Boss with not only greater numbers but a Mek with which to pull the foolish stunts Greenskins are known for. We expect that his gaze will next turn against the other Jawbreaka remnant: Gutrippa. After that, the biggest target would be either us or Gehault. Neither are particularly assuring.

Surveys of Oprechna show that the infrstructure is heavily damaged and with a pervasive if light Warp presence. There are suggestions of colonizing the ruins with Bailafax colonists to pave the way for making use of what heavy industry is left. We'll see if anything comes of it.

Then there is the matter of our neighbors. Both Gehault and the Loyalists at Yttreum and Bagalog have exhausted themselves in the fighting. Mostly by the destruction of the repair and fueling docks that once handled commerce in the region that has left most of their ships in dock for lack of strategic endurance. If we sent a delegation we might be able to company store the defectors, replacing their losses with our loyal crews and their damage with our material. At that point they wouldn't have much choice but to "take into account" our "wishes". Alternatively, we could simply send in the Sisters we have fielded alongside our armies and make it a point to remind them of their duty to Mankind and the consequences of their dereliction.

Finally we have received a three ship squadron of "ex"-pirates from Yttreum. Officially they were encouraged to come here but it is plainly obvious that they are using it as an excuse to wheedle access to our shipyard for overhauls and upgrades. The contracts are already in place with us purchasing any hulls they take from our foes while in the process of discharging their responsibilities. It is important to note that these are not truly warships. Even using them as harassers in a fleet battle might stretch their discipline and even capability as they all mount a volley of shoddy Torpedoes and some sort of secondary weapon.

Central: The immediate vicinity of Calavar.
-Calavar: Homeworld and critical production center. If this is lost, you lose. Even successful defenses can result in a loss of production and morale. Current Defenses are estimated as "Light". [Owned by Calavar]
-Surrounding Calavar: Similarly cast adrift but not as well blessed by their leadership these worlds needed an affirmation of order and hope so that we could profit from their manufacturing capacity. [Owned by Calavar, provides 60M] [Currently Assigned: 1st Patrol Squadron, 4th Calavar Infantry Army]

-Space Hulks: Present throughout the Subsector by now these masses represent threats and mild opportunity. [Requires the Void Army to be assigned here, as it represents going out of your way to hunt down the agglomerates in order to take their Stuff. Provides Loot rolls in proportion to the allocation of assets in order to determine gains. Armies other than the Void can be assigned though it is slightly riskier.]

North: The core of what was once and what may again be Lativa. Overrun by a myriad of small Ork forces in the wake of the final defeat after centuries of encroachment.
-Homna String Defense League (20LY): A defensive pact once stood among these worlds. Now it is somewhat pure once more as liberated slaves attempt to rebuild their lives in the shape of what is too often only stories to them. Orks press inward once again with the military reduction from the area to fuel other campaigns. [Forces Present: 3rd Calavar Infantry Army ]
-Dark Star Alignment (20LY): Followers of a heretical version of the Imperial Cult based around the former Imperial Guard depot on the Feudal World of Calsum. Their ground forces and marines are well equipped, but they lack a true shipyard for the Adeptus Mechanicus in their territory refuse to aid them. Their military is recovering from the devastating war in defense of the Homnan worlds, building proper ships from the hulks taken en masse from the Orks. [Nominally Traitor]
-WAAAGH!! Gutrippa (40LY): A splinter of the destroyed WAAAGH!! Jawbreaka. Made up of the brutal enforcers left at "home" by the late Warboss. Under attack by Legcutta. [Ork]
-WAAAGH!! Metalrenda (40LY): A splinter of the destroyed WAAAGH!! Jawbreaka. Lead and kept in line by the most promising Mekboy, now Mek Boss, of the horde. Locroft elements have taken a world from the heavy assets of the crazed Big Mek and are being pressed by reinforcements from the kunnin'ly brutal Kommando Boss now that the Mek has noticed the attack and capitulated so he could get back to banging together ever more outlandish and powerful war machines. [Legcutta]
-The Husk (40LY): A Hive World that had fallen to starvation and, subsequently, a Warp entity outside of the Four Powers. Now it has been consumed in turn by a race of psychically active predators, bodies and Warp taint alike. Refined raw materials are now pulled from it's surface as the Hives are dismantled, fueling the construction of new warships in spindly orbital construction slips. Defensive installations are taking shape alongside them as fleets trade volleys in high orbit and beyond. [Locroft]
-WAAAGH!! Legcutta (40LY): An Ork force that is said to use such "unOrky" tactics as ambushes, bombs, and regular Kommando forces and has been claiming poorly defended worlds among the southern portion of the core worlds from rivals and Humans alike. [Legcutta] [Under pressure by Minor Xenos]
-Minor Xenos (40LY): Heavily built ships with severe appearances have clawed out a few systems for their own purposes. [Locroft]
-Shrine World Lativa (60LY): Remembered as the first world colonized by Imperial citizens in the region this is the center of worship for the southern half of the Subsector. It's Adeptus Sororitas have held back any Ork forces that made landfall but all worlds nearby have been overrun by leaderless Ork hordes. Locroft assets have gone to ground in hinterlands formed by the Ork raids and have led to a resurgence of the green menace here and on neighboring worlds as attention is diverted from culling. [Crusade][Forces Present: 1st Auxiliary Squadron + 1st & 2nd Crusade Assault Armies + 7th & 8th Crusade Guard Infantry Armies + 1st Aerial Combat Army][Ongoing Campaign: Regional Pacification] [Under pressure from the Locroft]
-Hive World Octan (60LY): Notable for the manufacturing platforms in orbit, now turned to haphazardly producing guns for an endless stream of Orks. If even one could be taken and brought back to Calavar... A task complicated by the growing factionalization of the tribes under a dwindling number of leaders. [Ork]
-Forge World Laskin (80LY): The home Forge of Lexicalum and one of two "proper" Forge Worlds in the Subsector. The orbitals are lost to the Orks but the forge-cities still stand under cover of voids and arms. [Mechanicus]
-Forge World Grudan (80LY): The older of Lativa's Forge's, Grudan traces it's history back to the Long Night that sundered the galaxy before the Great Crusade reunited Humanity. The System Defense Force yet holds on, welcoming the sight of Calavan scouts as the rabble that surrounds them attempts to break their holy works. [Mechanicus]
-Hive World Narran (80LY): Once the capital of the Subsector. Now a cautionary tale. With the Defense Forces run ragged those with the most to lose paid all that they were in dark bargains and now pay the price in the flesh of their inferiors to hold back the occasional green tide. [Traitor]
-Core Worlds (80LY): A catch all term for those prosperous worlds that once were the pillars of Lativa and now are mostly ground under a green heel. Scrapships of the Orks are sometimes seen being destroyed by white, black, or yellow ships as some sort of campaign is being waged.

West: A string of fallen worlds shows the interest of the Ruinous Powers in the Subsector, surrounded by worlds they plunder for slaves and material as their corruption deepens.
-Civilized World Oprechna (20LY): Once a backwater off the shipping lanes and now an uninhabited and partly ruined world after the scouring by the Crusade at heavy cost. [Traitor]
-Kalvan (20LY): Once lost to the fools who placed their faith in blasphemous beings these worlds have been seized by Orks spilling off the sides of WAAAGH!! Legcutta. [Ork]
-Bailafax (20LY): Once conquered and once besieged, Bailafax resolutely stands in defiance of the tide of frothing madmen. With the addition of Calavan granted weapons and fortresses, may she never falter in her vigil. [Owned by Calavar, provides 20M] [Forces Present: The Ashen Legion]
-Uniary (40LY): Sprinkled with dead ships and with active Traitor leftovers rutting in the wastes between the Hives, Uniary turns to the task of reactivating the industry secreted into the bottoms of it's arcologies with the aid of the hardened survivors and new labor shipped in from elsewhere in the Crusade. [Forces Present: 2nd Calavar Infantry+ 1st & 2nd Crusade Siege Armies + 2nd Crusade Defense Army ]
-Tzeentchian Cult (40LY): A rare example of the people in the Subsector who were most vulnerable to the temptations of Tzeentch. Defenses are judged to be "Moderate", mostly through the use of sorcery. It is believed to have been the first target of the remaining Khornate forces and likely subjugated by them. [Traitor]
-Nurglish Cult (60LY): Previously a Civilized World, this group has at least one Squadron of Imperial Navy classes in good repair and use them to aggressively patrol their territory, regularly clashing with their red neighbors. Defenses are judged to be "Light", but with quality mobile forces. [Traitor]
-Forge World Incleon (60LY): To call this a true Forge World does the Mechanicus a disservice, but it was one of their distribution and lesser production nodes in the Southwestern portion of the Subsector. Now it sees regular visits from the lesser cults in the vicinity in order to buy bulk produced small transports and bears defenses in excess of what it previously did under Imperial authority, estimated at at least "Moderate". Semi-living hulls have been seen fighting back Orkish raids, infecting attackers with the same nonliving contagion that has overtaken them and protecting the comparatively pristine defense stations and minefields that cloak the approaches to the planet and it's shipyards specifically. [Traitor]
-Fleet Bastion Kandahar (60LY): Once supporting the actions of Navy vessels rooting out piracy this minor fortress has been overtaken by Nurglish cultists. Defenses and mobile forces are not well understood, though the former should be at least "Medium" from repurposing existing defenses. It is expected that the Leviathan previously fought at Uniary is returning here, or being summoned again. [Traitor]

South: This is the shortest route to Imperial territory from Calavar, in terms of objective distance.
-Bagalog (20LY): An opportunistic warlord has risen to power over the Civilized World of Bagalog. Nearby worlds have been yoked or willingly come to the banner of it's leader, the new leader of a middling merchant cartel by the name of Loree Mulyran. The central location and continued pleas for assistance have attracted an Explorator to the region, providing technology and manufacturing to the upcoming merchant lord for oaths of power and riches. Defenses are judged to be "Light" with a small number of newly built hulls coming from a recently operational construction dock in orbit. [Independent]
-Outpost Station Lexicalum (20LY): An Adeptus Mechanicus outpost that is supplying and organizing a small stretch of Loyalist worlds against attack. Orkish raiders and Traitors threaten their shipping in hopes of acquiring war material for their own designs. [Allied with Calavar] [Currently Assigned: 2nd Patrol Squadron]
-Feral World Jurgenz (40LY): Taken by WAAAGH!! Gunbreaka this is now a fortress world. At least by Orkish standards. Current Defenses are judged to be "Moderate" (a double handful of small defense platforms anchoring a minefield and what are probably monitors of some description and overlooked by a pair of Light Cruiser scale defense platforms in low orbit). [Held by WAAAGH!! Gunbreaka] [Sits on the Warp Current leading towards Imperial space and deeper into Gunbreaka territory]
-Minor Xenos (40LY): Smooth and flowing ships have emerged, wresting a handful of frontier worlds from Human and Ork alike. [Hashim]
-Civilized World Ungaunt (40LY): Once a lone beacon of civilization amidst a string of Feudal and Feral Worlds, Ungaunt is under siege as alien warships fly with impunity over the worlds of Humanity. The Hashim have clamped down on the region, fending off random Ork raiders and possessing control over at least a large portion of Ungaunt's surface. The fate of the Human inhabitants are as of now unknown. [Hashim]
-Civilized World Allient (40LY): Fallen to the perfidious greenskins Allient now provides for the raiding fleets sent out by it's barbarous overlords despite the outright destruction of it's maintenance platform at the hands of the Hashim. Defenses are judged to be "Light" and increasing slowly, but with mobile elements returning from attacks at unpredictable intervals. [Held by WAAAGH!! Gunbreaka]
-Agri World Blackim (60LY): Once feeding the Human residents of the Subsector this world now provides fodder for the biological monsters of the Orkish horde. [Held by WAAAGH!! Gunbreaka]

East: The least affected portion of the Subsector due to distance from the main threats.
-Civilized World Yttreum (20LY): Having taken the lead over several Agri and Mining Worlds Yttreum eyes the Imperial deserters at Gehault with increasing hostility and began a crash industrialization program on their allied worlds. Currently taking stock. [Independent]
-Stream Trade Triangle (20LY): A collection of worlds bound by trade ties and pacts into a rough oligarchy. Under increasing pressure from their militarized neighbors they have acquiesced to the demands, allowing the Navy deserters of Gehault access to their fueling and repair network and tactical command of what few combat ships they have. Both have taken damage from Bagalog and Yttreum raiders seeking to curtail the movement of their foes. [Gehault]
-Fleet Bastion Gehault (40LY): Several squadrons of the Imperial Navy continue their protection of their homeworlds where the Sector battlefleets do not out of the logistical base at Gehault. Several vicious punishments against rebellious worlds have been reported by local shipping, including at least one life eater bombardment, but they commonly range outside of their nominal territory in order to destroy Traitor raiders and collaborators. They have been stirred to action by the actions of their neighbors, seeing themselves as just in reestablishing the Pax Imperialis. Currently taking stock. [Gehault]
-Silent Stars (40LY): Rare is the Human ship, Loyalist, Secessionist, or Traitor, that returns from this region. Entry is unthinkable during these times.

I'm thinking we should smash up Metalrenda this turn, while Legcutta's dealing with Gutrippa. We've got breathing room from the heretics, time to curb(stomp) greenskin advancement again. It would also be beneficial to go make sure a new WAAAGH!! doesn't spring up from Octan.

I'm afraid the whole Lativa situation and Kalvan appearing inside our "territory", such as it is, have to take priority as the two main things we commit to this turn. Good news is that hitting Kalvan is still stomping on greenskins!
So why haven't we gone for liberating a forge world
Incleon is too heavily fortified by the enemy, the northern Forge Worlds are a bit too far and holding fine by themselves for now.

Obviously we need to crush the Lorcroft assault on Lativa. Commit at least the 2nd and 4th squadrons to repulsing their fleet and send in army groups to clear the bastards off of the planet.

I strongly want to raid Hive World Octan this turn, because it's looking like if we wait much longer it'll become much harder to successfully seize any of the industrial platforms and relocate them to our territory. I don't think we should try to reconquer the world just yet, but a raid to increase our industrial production would definitely be useful now that we're looking to start producing Light Cruisers in the near future.

Hmm. Well, first of all we definitely need to send a delegation to Gehault this turn. If the Locroft aren't pressing Lativa hard, then we'd probably be okay with the fourth squadron, the first support squadron, and a bunch of additional ground forces. That would let us go after Octan with the second, both void armies, and both torpedo squadrons. That wouldn't leave much for hitting local targets, though. We'd need to send the first or third to Gehault, and neither is really strong enough for offensive actions on their own. Still, hitting Octan now sounds like a really good idea if we can make it work; hopefully it'll slow down the orkish buildup significantly.

I do not want to send in the 4th squadron with insufficient support. Send the 1st squadron with the 4th and 1st support squadron.

Gehault is to negotiate a peace between the non-Chaos factions. Not getting into a fight with them.

Yes, but at the same time I'm concerned that sending an overly-weak squadron would send the wrong message and make negotiatons harder. @DaLintyGuy, is that something we need to worry about, or can we just send the understrength third squadron and call it good enough?

The appearance of strength in negotiations is important. Even if you are more looking to buy them out rather than simply putting your foot down. Although even then having proof that you can deliver on your promises is useful...

Though you are correct int hat you "can" send a part strength formation to deliver your delegation.

Hrmmm....ya know what the Yttreeum privateers would be good for? Anti-pirate patrols. We can trust em to be raiders, but would be iffy for convoy escorts. So send em out to pirate the pirates. Maybe with a lance frigate as a "commissar".

And I'd say we should make contacting and aiding Forge Grudan a priority. They're a major forge world, and we probably wouldnt have to invest in a garrison if we can take pressure off their system defenses for a little bit. The only real risk i can see is that we might be judged a little too Radical for their tastes, but we could use the trade/manufacturing boost that would come from having reliable contact with a true forge.

I'm working on history writeups for the Yttreum, er, privateer ships.

By the way, @DaLintyGuy, I see you threadmarked my Long Arm design as "kind of" a Long Arm, which I assume means that means it's not canon. Are there particular design features you feel make it unsuitable?

I think I'll be changing that to be honest. The biggest thing I have is the nitpick about the internal workings of the turrets not being on display but that could be explained away as a stylistic choice to differentiate things for a viewer.

As for a bonus, I have nothing specific in mind.
