A/N3: This post didn't go through the proper editing process, I just wished to post something before the year deadline passed. There will likely be a number of quality changes to this post once post 20 arrives.
I collected a whole slew of editing issues (something around 60 quotes, I think), and then at the end find this. So should I just skip any C&C post? Or maybe just post all the quotes for your own reference, to fix them, and not worry about marking the errors in each one?

The vast majority are issues with run-on sentences, comma splices, and the like.

Just tell me how you want it, if at all, since I don't want to spend a couple hours typing in corrections if they're not needed.

Heya Kinematics, there's still some editing going on for the gdoc version of the post. If there's some mistakes you want to point out, it'll be easiest to stay up to date on the gdoc version. Post 19

Also, just a general PSA, I've been moving omakes, fanart etc into the threadmarks now that the SV system is in proper play.

Right... I need to go back and re-read the quest. I'll be back in 3-4 weeks due to needing to work by which time comments will be closed again : P

but YAY UPDATE.

... In hindsight, posting side-by-side with Avalanche maybe wasn't the greatest idea of the generation.

That said:
*reads the update of 28k words*

Ooh... Okay, that wasn't that bad.

*Sees the following omake post*

...

I'm going to bed.
Whew.
And that's only half of it.

And then Tayta with the Omake of Doom.

Food ready. Music Ready. Let's get this on!

New record perhaps? I forgot how long your updates before

... wait is this half of an update?

Andd yeahhh, I thought you have learned your lesson back then when you give the questers options what to do what for the whole day instead of splitting in two updates.

I have forgotten this

Man, It has been an hour already and still long way ahead (admitedly I distracted too often).

More than two hours reading (and commenting, and googling on whims) so far. The cake ... well, it hasn't run out yet, but only because its a rather big slice and I eat slowly.
Back to story

Phew. Almost three hours. Good read, good job Avalanche. Also, you are crazy. 28k words and still only half of an update. Crazy awesome, but still. :D

What the hell, There's a doorstopper omake just right after!
Those were some great fights, but now I've finally finished the chap-

*sees the "bigger than the actual chapter"-omake*

...MOTHERFU-

Anna: "No swearing."

Ahem, sorry. *Deep inhale* MOTHERFUDGE!!!
I shamelessly admit that this was the reason I did it at all.

Sorry if I made you guys miss sleep or late for work or anything. Wasn't my intention.

Huh. Would you believe, I was pretty certain this was dead.

Anyways. Lot to process this update, the two that stand out to me particularly being that the mental issues Anna has do actually have a proper diagnosis - though hers is probably much more advanced than most, Koujiro can't use the word "shit" - and holy crap, Antagonists have internal politics and conflicts? We need that on a map!

Oh, and an omake that simultaneously juggles being very dark and quite lighthearted in a way I've not seen in a while. That too.
I'll take that as meaning you liked it. :)

Dr. Strangelove was all about that black comedy, so... I guess I managed to bring that over okay?

What indeed.

Anything I can do to help?

The update was great, i like it.

The omake, less so. If only because i simply didn't like the story.
Fair enough. It's not really a very uplifting tale, is it.

I almost vomited on several occasions. The feeling evoked were akin to combination of reading detailed description of Alien impregnating and festering inside your loved one and your mother turning out to be proud Jews-burning Nazi.
It is a rare work of fiction that engages me so. Great job.
o_O

Well, uh... that was an image to wake up to this morning.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

This did not go the way I was expecting at all. Setting aside Sandra's shift into maximum insanity at the end I kinda agree with her. The Antagonists have waged a war of genocide against humanity for 15 years and the moment humanity's victory looks likely the Antagonists suddenly start communicating and sue for peace.

The Antagonists can produce a Type Zeros per year for every Major Breach they have while the 300 are called the 300 for a reason. Given enough time they'll have too many Type Zeros for the 300 to fight and then defeat will be inevitable. So stalling is very much in their favor.

Honestly I thought this whole thing was a set up by the Antagonists. With Armstrong Base vs. G-Com the UN has it's best Valkyries killing each other and destroying the defenses protecting G-Com. Then "Caitlin" lies, because the Antgaonist's Static Wave counter felt like an obvious Diabolus ex Machina, about the Earth being destroyed if G-Com fires. This causes the UN to give permission for Abraxas to get close to G-Com; at which point he destroys the defenses, kills all the G-Com Valkyries, lets the remaining Armstrong Base Valkyries enter G-Com, and then destroys G-Com and kills all the survivors.

Now the UN has no super weapon, is down basically it's entire core of elite pilots, and odds are a good chunk of the 300 cores are either lost forever or destroyed. That leaves the Antagonists free to steamroll the rest of humanity.

Instead the Antagonists seem to seriously want peace, or rather they want Coke-Zero, and their Diabolus ex Machina is real so Anna ends up wiping out humanity.
Well, uh... I'm glad I managed to surprise you?

Part of the Strangelove parallels was giving people at least somewhat reasonable arguments and good intentions for what they were doing, so if Nega-Sandra was convincing in that regard, I must've done okay (though I'm willing to admit that I may have been slightly biased in her favour xD ). The fact that she just so happened to be wrong in this case, I feel, shouldn't detract from her having a point.

Plus, if it had turned out to all be a ploy by the AGs, I think that would've been even more depressing, but not in a good way. As it is, the AGs being actually genuine in wanting peace just makes it all the more tragic.

And to be honest, I found the idea of the AGs suing for peace because Caitlin really wanted to bang Koujirou far too hilarious to pass up.

The update was pretty good, though I prefer Anna as the viewpoint character. The omake was technically solid, but too depressing for me to like.
Thanks for writing!
You're welcome! Thanks for commenting.

I fucking hated the ending of the Omake.

Sandra destroyed humanity and got victory bullshit on the top of it? What nonsense with the Higgs Particles Wall.
What's worse she used poor Anna as a sacrificial bomb-terrorist. Who "won" against Antagonists. By blowing up everything.

I think that Plot Armour of Sandra was too thick. Setsu and Koiji should have serious shot at killing her, when they were in Frames, and she was not in Frame. Primary because while Sandra is good, she is not Anna. Also Shuri being useless doormat? I mean, what?!
I expected Shuri to not be shocked silly, but simply put Particle Cannon the biggest traitor of humanity ever.

Unlike kids, and unlike Sandra, she is a veteran like Anna ... if much less traumatized.
It's a fair cop.

I'll freely admit that the characterization in the story is the result of some rather significant interpretation on my part. When it came to figuring out how this hypothetical world would be, I drew heavily from these posts in particular:
Um, if you swapped and the setting tone remains at - 1? Well The Ace doesn't change all that much, there's really only one true real difference between the Golden Ace and the Broken Ace, one single character defining moment that sets her path in stone where before she could go either way.

The Broken Ace has never been shot down by Antagonists. The Golden Ace has never been shot down.

Sandra... wouldn't exist. The Design Child is a left over, or rather, scion from a den of mad science, where ethics are banned, where only results matter. The ends justify all means. The products of the lab would be fed back into the production cycle, put to work to iterate and improve their successors. The design child displayed results in the most spectacular manner possible by bringing the whole venture down and destroying the ones who set it up and all involved to the 3rd degree. The entire UN was staggered, this would have been as significant as the annexation of Pakistan in Shuri's backstory, possibly even more momentous.

In this case the Ace and the Ojou would still know each other, because the Ace helped the Design child break down the facility, but their current relationships would be hollow and parasitic. The Design Child cares for the now only in the relationships of what can be achieved in the future.

I'd honestly be rather afraid for Anna in such a setting. Someone so powerful yet...

So uh yeah. Things.
I think I've talked about this before, but you'd be absolutely miserable in a +3. Not because worse things happen to you in +3, but because less bad things happened so you're more human. The townspeople also wouldn't have turned on each other, they would have died when the fire nat Sekhmet attacked the town and erased it whilst you were at Saskatoon. Sekhmet would then show up as a recurring villain for you specifically. Most strikingly, the mantra would be actually one you use in positive settings rather than one used by the Agitators in negative settings. This also leads to shifts in character quirks such as you not being on hair trigger against human violence etc. Basically, people bully Anna, probably unintentionally, the show.

NegaSandra would love it. All these naive, optimistic, and powerful Valkyrie to take advantage of in her quest to have her revenge and rule the world, (for the best interest of the world of course, this is a positive tone setting after all). Then every time she tries something about taking over the world she gets interrupted by the Golden Ace who sits her down and gives her a half hour lecture on the inalienable rights of freedom, democracy and liberty etc. Of course, there's the whole 'god's mill grinds slow but sure' vs 'only blood will pay for this' views towards revenge between her and the Golden Ace.

Broken Ace in a +3 world would silently hate everything whilst maintaining the PR exterior. She'd also come in later in the series in +3 and probably be a study in contrast against Shy Girl Warrior. This is all due to various spoilers.

Yukari in a +3 world would be a mess really. She'd hover around the Flight more than she is now worrying about everything due to various spoilers.

VeterenKoujirou in +3? Snark machine. We are talking about Guile and Dark as Silver in one room levels of snark. What is this eroge game setting and why am I here? Unfortunately I don't have a real talent for snark so I'm glad I don't have to write him.

XxXxXxXxXx

Re; Flight merger. Yeah that something I wasn't and still am somewhat frustrated about. I thought about halting the update with Koujirou messaging you with a y/n and a vote, but I was rather sure it would end on a positive vote, resulting in a wasted vote, and it would also result in the shortest ever update (from lunch to just before afternoon class) so I decided to skip it. I then wrote a scene from Koujirou's PoV about the merger but threw it away. The resulting scene reads helter and skelter and rushed because it was. I really wanted to get past the scene to move on with the rest of the update. Were I to rewrite that sequence of events, it would be different.
My interpretation of this was that Shuri, while still not living the happiest life in this -1 world, would still have a fundamentally different character due to the difference in her backstory. Yes, she still watched as her country was destroyed in all but name; but destroyed by AGs, not by Muv Luv-level human pettiness and politics. As such, she still retains that core of idealism that, in a +3 world, would have been used to scold Nega-Sandra for trying to take over the world.

The fact that she didn't particle beam Sandra as soon as she confronted her is due to two things. She still believes firmly in the rule of law, and shooting people without due process goes against that. And Sandra, despite all the weirdness between them, is still supposed to be her friend.

When it comes to the plot armour, maybe. But I believe Avalanche has said previously that Higgs is basically synonymous with handwave in this setting, so as far as I'm concerned, that makes it fair game. :V

That and... suppose they do kill her then and there. What changes? Earth is still gone, Abraxas is still going to die, most of the remaining Valkyries and UN Armed Forces have been killed... the only difference is that the UN is in charge of the wreckage. Which, I'll grant, is still probably the preferable option.

As for Anna "winning" by blowing up all the Antagonists forever... considering some of the discussion that's happened in this thread, I don't feel that's too off the charts.

Ugh, the omake right after mindfucked me. I was running late this morning before work so I only took a quick skim and missed the post change. I thought that Sandra had revealed herself as a hidden baddie and Anna suddenly got deployed to Europe...

Sorry about that?

It's a parody of Dr. Strange Love.
And what that parody lacked was 2nd flight doing a survival kit content check.
What, you mean Second Flights breakfast didn't count?
Oh, you.

I wanted to, but I couldn't figure out a decent way to get it in there without causing things to bloat too much (and given how much the word count exploded...). I had a pretty tight plan when it came to each scene. Didn't manage to fit in a joke about an ark ship gap, either.

Also, if I wrote that, I'd totally get banned for sure! :p

Anyway, I already gave most of my reactions when I was beta-reading it, but that was a goddamn outstanding update, Avalanche. Great descriptions, great characterization, great combat, great detail.

I forgot this existed, then just spent an entire day working through somewhere around sixty thousand words.

That escalated quickly. :V

Poor Anna, and all these dumb people stepping on her buttons.

Read both in ~1.5-2 hours while getting back home from work. Git gud :V

Well, uh... that was an image to wake up to this morning.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

Well, as preamble, I did not watch Dr. Strangelove, so I did not get the reference.

I was disturbed this much by basically this weird inversion where seemingly sane people were against people and going all humanity fuck yeah.
Comparison with Alien inside your loved ones was birthed by, um: seeing my favourite character (I like Sandra, so sue me) act like this xenocidal thing was kind of creepy and disgusting because of it. I probably would have reacted in vaguely same-ish way if Avalanche has written an omake about -1 setting with Golden Ace + Design Child, I suppose.

Seeing a lot of humanity's brightest go full human supremacy those ants aren't even humans they deserve to be purged...it was revolting, honestly. Especially since internal logic could not shut up that IRL nazis too were someone's quirky friends and brothers in arms, so I could not even make reading easier for myself by interpreting it as "ow the edge" because, well, even the shittiest humans do feel like they are heroes taking on traitors or whatnot. It was only amplified by the contrast with the image of cute girls doing cute things to each other with which you opened and oh so effectively established a, hm, link to characters?

So, again, you did a wonderful job, thanks. It just pushed a lot of my "fuck the xenophobes" and "fuck hard men making hard decisions" buttons, that's all.

Despite the Great Battle, the conflict between the two Breaches appeared to intensify. Sources indicate that STRATNET estimates put the total damage caused by this conflict to be at nearly 3% of total North American production capacity in the closing year of the Great Battle. This civil war also constrained Antagonist expansion across Canada and Alaska, greatly weakening their defensive strength, especially that of the Fairbanks Breach, which had to set aside much of its defensive projects in order to replenish lost units and production facilities. Declassified intelligence images shows swaths of destroyed Antagonist structures between the two Breaches, with such extensive losses suffered that the minor breaches are estimated to have spent nearly a fifth of their combined production output of 57 Post Impact on their strange little civil war.

All this combined to lock in the Alaskan Offensive as the counteraction of the United Nations against the offensive of the Antagonists. Yet, even as the Armed Forces visibly massed throughout Siberia and around the Pacific, the two minor breaches appeared only more desperate to end the conflict, one way or the other. Detected conflict reached an all time high with Higgs emissions, other exotics and gamma bursts detected. The two breaches were now committing Types and High Yield Weaponry against one another. All good news for the UN, who would sweep in and destroy both minor breaches in the coming months, finally ending this queer little domestic dispute.

They don't. Or, at least, the entire "civil war" that the UN released to the civilians was actually just Anna fighting the antagonists by herself. She singlehandedly tied up 3% of the Antagonists North American resources.

3% of North American forces, which isn't quite as awesome in the original sense, but yes.

In excess of 20%.

3% was when it became noticeable to the UN Forces. Remember, the Great Battle was the grand offensive where the AGs deployed type zeros for the first time. The Great Battle ended over a year ago from the Alaskan Offensive, perhaps even more. Anna grew and grew in effectiveness until she ate an entire country's firepower and the results of her actions were noticable from orbit. Could she have peaked? Maybe, but she shows no signs of stopping even now. I suspect that if Anna had to keep fighting she would have eaten Sekmet's special stuff including the Higgs Reactor, upgraded herself again, and started hunting breaches and type zeros. At what point would she have been stoppable? When the AG command brings together several class-A type zeros to kill her? Hmmmmm.

Incorrect, only 20% of the two MINOR BREACHES production was fully dedicated to fighting Anna. Its even there in the quote you cited. There were 2 MAJOR Breaches and 6 Minor Breaches in North America prior to the end of the Great Battle. Of those 8 breaches, only 2 of the minor ones were dedicating 20% of their resources to combating Anna.

Currently there are 2 Major Breaches and 3 Minor ones still active on the continent.

Edit: Line for reference, bolding is mine: ", with such extensive losses suffered that the minor breaches are estimated to have spent nearly a fifth of their combined production output of 57 Post Impact on their strange little civil war."

Hearing how long it took people to read the updates/etc really hammers home how fast I can read. Sometimes I forget it's weird.

(For reference, time between the post before and after was 40 mins, give or take. While at work, and doing other stuff as well. o_O )

Eh, it's like playing Minecraft, and then leaving your character in your house to go eat lunch, and then coming back and being confused about all your wheat suddenly being grown. Technically, you took that long, but you really weren't actually spending that time trying to do it.

And by you I mean me.

My usual post-updoot post, a bit late and with five pages currently left unread. And now I'm going to need to start work on some sort of omake. Probabbly something light and fluffy because that big omake was even more depressing than stuff from the -5 world.
Um, sorry, but uh, it's impossible to hurt someone else.
And cue the simulation breaking down and somebody dying for real in three... two...
Hell was built through good intentions.
Has Durga learned snark?
Setsuna didn't appear to notice, agitatedly browsing through the briefing, "The he- the house are these scenarios? Arcology, Hive interior? What. The. Fruits."
Anna: "Git gud, scrubs"
However, the two contestants of the match had only eyes for each other.
Also part of VDS, shipping everyone.
Koujirou unsheathed Murakumo and swung once, the thrusters on the rear of the blade pushing him back into an ascending course, correcting his spin and cutting a path through the ridgeline in a single motion.
Isn't Masamune the one that traditionally slices mountains in half? :V
[Hey, when you're like this, surely- can you hear me?]
Kandakara: "You cannot possibly be this- oh, who am I kidding, you can be this dense, you're a shonen harem protagonist. If you were any denser you'd exceed the Chandrasekhar limit"
She pouted up at him, having retracted her frame, hugging his hand to her side, "I liked it more when you were green and cuddly, but you being so dominant is pretty hot too."
And cue the Tsundere going a little bit yan right about-
"Sandra! Set up a loser's bracket! I am going to throw my match and kick her ass!"
Now. And given her match, Setsuna may have some anger issues that need working out.

WE ARE NOT FINE
NONE OF THIS IS FINE
"All is well," Caitlin seemed to murmur in a low, distracted tone, staring at the wall past the President. "Events remain within pre-determined tolerances. Koujirou will become ours."
Antagonist objectives prior to destruction of Earth:
1 Peaceful coexistence
2 Maple syrup
3 Tapping dat ass
3b Peaceful coexistence with Setsuna
4 Moose?
4b A Moose bit my sister once

I'll take that as meaning you liked it. :)

Dr. Strangelove was all about that black comedy, so... I guess I managed to bring that over okay?

Oh yes, it was pretty good. Not my usual cup of tea, as it were, I tend to prefer stories with somewhat more positive endings - but in the same breath, I have had niggling intentions to watch Dr. Strangelove even though I long since spoiled myself as to how it goes, so.

@Tayta Malikai , but Nega-Sandra from the Omake killed off not only Antagonists. But also humanity. Without Earth, as source of materials to maintain the base and feed many thousands of people in Lunar base? It collapses within minutes of running out of air/food/water. Following rule of law? Shuri is a teenager with a lot of Dakka one thought away. SoD breaking!:V

They feed themselves with hydroponics, and they're staffed with Valks. They're basically self-sufficient already.

Leonhart raised Emily's arm into the air and the cadet jumped, pumping a fist in celebration.

Millia slumped forwards, expression downcast, but before she could turn away and trudge to the exit point, Emily jumped over and pulled her fellow cadet into a hug. For a moment, the shorter girl struggled, pulled off her feet by the taller one, before she reached up and pinched Emily's cheeks until she let go. The two stood facing each other, a mirror of their poses before the match, but this time, the air was light. Millia was grinning widely, if rather exasperatedly, and Emily pouted, rubbing at her cheeks.

The two clasped hands and hugged, this time Emily bending down to accommodate Milia. The two exchanged a few words smiling and nodding, and marched to the exit point together.
If there was one thing I'd wish for, it would be Anna's reaction to this. Sadly, things skipped straight to Koujirou's fight.

You read both of them in little over an hour?! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU!!! :o

Diabolical. I like it.
*slow clap*

... it isn't hard to read them that fast.

I read just the update in <10~ minutes.

Also I wonder if Valk's can bring back Dinosaurs? I mean... I kinda want to see a Valk Run Jurassic Park. Oh man, wait what if they improve them. Could we have them using laser eyed, super-steel toed flying raptors of doom? Laser Sharks! I mean, why not some biological warfare, what could possibly go wrong?

Some new kid Valk is totally thinking about this.

...Monsters, all of you.

It's simple to learn how to read this fast.

Read 100k~ words, turn 100 pages, check 100 books, every single day for three years. :V
(Well more accurately 100k words <8~ hours every day for three years).

Actually this difference in reading speed is kind of interesting when you compare it to the speeds between Valks + Normal people huh.
Or an even better comparison, Korean SC2 Pros vs Random Non-Korean Casual. The difference is huge, like 'I have an army, you have... a barracks just now' huge. :V

Not sure how many of these are still in effect since I've been reading this off and on for about 10 hours now but here we go....

Not to say that Claire would be a main love interest, but a popular side character/darkhorse candidate. For sure.
Dude, she gets more screentime in the tournament arc than Anna.
Hell, more than Setsuna.

Then again, everyone (but Anna) got more screen time during the first half of the tournament arc than Setsuna.

I, er, honestly kind of assumed most people here had seen the movie. I mean, it's got nukes, SV likes nukes, that's a perfectly reasonable conclusion to make, right? Right?

Well, as preamble, I did not watch Dr. Strangelove, so I did not get the reference.

I was disturbed this much by basically this weird inversion where seemingly sane people were against people and going all humanity fuck yeah.
Comparison with Alien inside your loved ones was birthed by, um: seeing my favourite character (I like Sandra, so sue me) act like this xenocidal thing was kind of creepy and disgusting because of it. Hey, I like Sandra too :V From the impression I'm getting, people wouldn't mind Empress Sandra all that much, it's just Evil Empress Sandra they don't like. Which, considering what she did to get there, is only fair.

As for how people were behaving in the story, I'm guessing you mean the Valkyries? Well, I think you saw what I was trying to do there, so I won't say too much on that. But yeah, like you say, people rationalize things all the time, so I can't imagine this would be any different.

Thanks for all the feedback again, it's much appreciated.

Antagonist objectives prior to destruction of Earth:
1 Peaceful coexistence
2 Maple syrup
3 Tapping dat ass

4 Moose?
4b A Moose bit my sister once
Seems legit.

Clearly, the reason why Anna was such a thorn in their side for so long was that she was powered by the power of moose.

Oh yes, it was pretty good. Not my usual cup of tea, as it were, I tend to prefer stories with somewhat more positive endings - but in the same breath, I have had niggling intentions to watch Dr. Strangelove even though I long since spoiled myself as to how it goes, so.
Thanks! I do usually prefer happier endings as well, but it just wouldn't have been Dr. Strangelove that way.

That said, now you can go watch the movie, come back, and tell me exactly how much I ripped it off! :V

Basically. Considering the level of technology humanity has in this setting, mining the moon for resources should be a trivial task.

As for Shuri being a teenager with a lot of dakka respecting the rule of law... uh, uh, it's an anime setting! I don't have to justify myself! :p

Diabolical. I like it.

Sadly, I can't take credit for the idea: that was all @Kaizuki. Praise be to the catgirl. \o/
