It is still early in the morning, so you begin what was rather quickly becoming your morning routine. After leaving your clothes in the laundry chute, you order the bath to set up a standard water bath like before , but this time you select a holovideo named 'Alpine Dawn'.
The walls glow, depicting the faint yellow and orange smears of predawn. There is a faint hiss and you sniff slightly in surprise as the air inside the bathroom changes, the faint scent of pine wafting through the air as it chills. Around you, the colour of the ceramic bath morphs, changing from blue-white into the slick dark-grey of igneous rocks. The projected horizon slowly brightens around you as you relax into the water, the peaks of various mountains lighting up like beacons from the sunlight refracting off white snow.
Wow… this is nice. You settle back to soak, languidly enjoying the ambience.
XxXxXxXxXx
An hour later, you meander down to the cafeteria.
For a moment, you have to review the available list of foods, as Sandra had ordered for you yesterday. After a brief recollection of the various types of foods you have consumed, you are satisfied that you have resynchronised your list. As of now, you are up to the tail end of 'D' and encroaching upon 'E'.
A glance around the cafeteria shows that no one else from your Flight has arrived yet, so you sit down at a random table. Checking on the network, you see that Sandra is listed as active, but no one else is. A check of the various channels available between Flight members shows that while everyone is awake, everyone except Sandra has their status set as busy. They are probably still engaging in pre-breakfast activities.
For a moment, you hesitate, wondering if you should wait for the Flight to arrive in the cafeteria to deliver your… uh, apology in person, or simply send it off as a message.
…
Feeling slightly sheepish, you decide to send a message off to Sandra first. Somehow, the thought of apologising for your abrupt departure last night face to face with the other girl fills you with a creeping sense of mortification.
… You are terrible at apologies; why did you think this was a good idea? Also, haven't you been spending a bit too much time apologising to various people recently?
…
>>"I am sorry for leaving Flight practice so abruptly last night."
>>TO: Cadet Aleksandra M. Cambridge
… Um. Should you include anything else? You're not sure…
No, that should be sufficient.
You send off the message and begin eating, but you've barely lifted a mouthful of cereal from your bowl when Sandra returns a message.
>>"It is of no particular negative consequence, Anna. Please do not worry overly much.
After your departure, we ran through three more exercises, largely focused upon cross training of Flight roles. Setsuna and I can both serve adequately as Keeper, although our own sensor and data processing abilities are not nearly on par with yours. We likely will double up in the event that you are unavailable. Setsuna can also act with relative competence in the Vanguard position, an achievement I don't quite yet share. Shuri is, of course, cross trained to serve in any of the roles, though her specialisation remains in close-range combat. Koujirou is unfortunately still restricted largely to the role of Vanguard, as he lacks the flexibility in his weapon systems to serve as either Sweeper or Keeper. Koujirou's older sister Yukari, as an Elite, is also already cross trained, and is well qualified in all Flight and Squadron level positions, though her specialist role would be Edge Sweeper.
On the topic of Rokusabe Yukari, are you aware that there will be a Mentorship program where cadets from the higher years supervise Flights from First Years? Yukari has expressed interest in acting as the third year mentor for our Flight. The rest of the Flight and I have welcomed this arrangement, and so in lieu of any objections, I wish to also receive your blessing for this pact."
>>FROM: Cadet Aleksandra M. Cambridge
You digest the message, feeling another jolt of discontent at the news that your departure had left a hole in the Flight, then review the attached recordings Sandra had attached to the message, research this 'mentorship program' and quickly compose a response.
>>"Understood. I have no objections to Yukari serving as our Flight mentor."
>>TO: Cadet Aleksandra M. Cambridge
Another response quickly arrives
>>"Excellent! I will convey the news shortly. Will you be at our lessons, Anna? I have been worrying for your condition following your departure last night."
>>FROM: Cadet Aleksandra M. Cambridge
Condition?
Aberrations in frame function include right forearm being minutely weaker than left forearm, reconstruction almost complete. No impairment to combat effectiveness. Frame components, no change. One hundred and eighteen hours for Omnium batteries to complete energy compression, two hundred and thirty hours for energy dynamos to stabilise and format into a functional alignment. Moderate negative effect on combat effectiveness. Reactivation of redundant organ systems completed, new systems currently on standby.
No outstanding errors.
>>"I am functional."
>>TO: Cadet Aleksandra M. Cambridge
There is a lengthy pause and you begin to think that Sandra had signed off from the conversation at your reassurance, when another message comes in.
>>"That is good news, Anna. I will see you in class then."
>>FROM: Cadet Aleksandra M. Cambridge
Hmm. In class? Sandra isn't going to be present during breakfast? You wonder what she is occupied with this morning for a moment, track her location- then drop the line of thought, deciding that what Sandra felt needed doing near the medical bay was her own business.
Soon, Koujirou, Setsuna and Yukari entered the cafeteria. A casual search for Shuri reveals her absent from the cafeteria like Sandra.
Koujirou ambles over to the food tables, giving you a distracted wave and looking somewhat chagrined as he argues with Setsuna. Setsuna, on the other hand, held her nose in the air, a wide grin splitting her face as she interjected with short rebuttals, leaving Koujirou more flustered with every retort. Keeping pace behind them, Yukari walks and smiles, a slight bounce to her steps that had not been there previously. The three of them moved around each other with a familiarity that seemed almost choreographed as they select their breakfast.
Family.
… You swallow a lump in your throat.
Koujirou is apparently driven beyond words and drops a soft boiled egg out of his plate and over his shoulder. Setsuna neatly dodges. The egg continues past her and with a faint splat, the mushy item slaps into Yukari's face and slowly slides down, leaving a yellow trail. The two first years stare at Yukari in shock, frozen.
Uh-
Thwock! Bonk!
Yukari's response is prompt as she synchronises her Valkyrie, looking incensed. You start in alarm- then freeze in confusion as Yukari grabs a baguette, walloping both first years over the head with it. Setsuna and Koujirou flee with yelps, escaping in separate directions.
The two reconverge and duck behind you a moment before Yukari skids to a stop in front of your table, a tail of egg fragments still trailing behind her, brandishing her somewhat bent baguette like a sword. Yukari stares down at you as you blink back up at her, wondering what exactly you are supposed to do in this situation. Lacking an appropriate response, you decide to pretend nothing unusual is going on.
"… Good morning Yukari. You are our Flight mentor now, correct?"
Yukari raises one slightly soggy eyebrow, then nods stiffly. There is a faint flash of white, and her Frame, Nue, manifests for a brief moment before fading away, leaving Yukari in a clean uniform with unblemished skin and hair. You do notice that her makeup had also been erased, having disappeared sometime between the expression and retraction of her Frame.
"No morning food fights in the cafeteria please."
The call sounds out from a neighbouring table held by a Flight of third years, the tired looking cadets not even looking up at the commotion. Yukari waves her hand in a horizontal wiping motion, pressing her index finger and thumb together, and receives a slight grunt of acknowledgement. The interjection seemed to have calmed her and she sits down, a brief flash of light from her hands materialising her platter of food from storage.
"Yes, I was thinking about it. Last night after the group practice, Sandra suggested I take that program. It sounded like a good idea, so I volunteered for the position of Flight mentor," Yukari replies, her tone then turning wry as she continues, "In my case, I'll probably be doing more learning than teaching, but if you would have me…"
There, she trails off questioningly, and you nod in response, "Of course."
Yukari smiles widely at that, her whole posture brightening, shoulders lifting and back straightening. You blink at her reaction in partial bemusement and partial relief. If the position is that heartening to Yukari, you are glad that you answered in affirmative without a second thought.
Koujirou slinks out from behind you and Yukari's expression rapidly cools. The boy had somehow managed to keep ahold of his own tray through the whole chase, and now, he gives Yukari a guilty smile as he sits down, rubbing the back of his head ruefully, "Sorry about that egg sis, but yeah, welcome to the Flight."
Yukari sniffs and turns her head, but another smile tugs at her lips at that, and she turns back to face him and gives a shallow bow to Koujirou. He returns the bow then digs into his food, missing the dark look thrown his way by Setsuna as the girl also emerges from hiding, her breakfast tray having apparently not survived the pursuit.
… You think that this is as good a time as any and breath in, bracing yourself.
"Everyone, I am sorry for leaving so abruptly last night. It was the first time we had a full Flight exercise-"
"Ah don't fuss it Anna. We all know you'd have done great. We needed practice with other roles anyway, so don't worry," Koujirou immediately replies, waving his spoon around casually for emphasis.
"Some of us at least," Setsuna chimes in from the side, looking smug, before throwing you a speculative look. You blink innocently in question at the look, which causes Setsuna to snort quietly and shake her head.
"Yeah, don't worry Anna. We were fine. Some of us at least," Setsuna repeats.
Koujirou pouts at that and he retreats into his food, grumbling quietly, "Well yeah, but I katanna'd the hell out of that Dragonfly earlier, c'mon now, cut me some slack… "
Yukari pokes Koujirou gently on the side, "Don't speak with your mouth full. Anna, things do come up. I understand; don't worry about it."
… You feel a faint smile take over your own face at that and you return to your food.

"Welcome, Cadets, to Friday Morning. You have touched on the basics. Your enemies. Your allies. Us and Them. You have learned about your frames and your equipment. Today will be about you specifically."
Leonhart glares over the room, eyes sharp.
"As said in the opening ceremony, for those of you who listened, you will learn the basics of combat throughout your entire first year. Every Valkyrie must learn at the very least of how to survive on the battlefield. More than anywhere else, you are needed on the frontlines. For more than anything else, you are needed to hold back the tide. However, there is more to a Valkyrie than just combat."
Meyer then takes over.
"As you all know, at the heart every Arcology is a Valkyrie Core. Some Arcologies, such as Perth, are singular Valkyrie frames, the largest and most massive Valkyrie systems in existence. The large scale Builders, that you have probably seen at some time through your lives, are Valkyrie frames also. There can be more to your future than just combat. For those of you who may wish more to build towards the future of humanity rather than fight towards it, a mixed focus stream will be offered for you at the beginning of your second year."
At this, Leonhart resumes talking and sweeps her arm in a broad gestures across the room.
"For those of you who will fight, you are not drones and it would be a grave misuse of your abilities to treat you as directed weapon systems. For all its strengths, our Strategic and Tactical Combat Command Networks rely on our inputs and opinions to function optimally. Despite our best attempts, it cannot always reach every corner of the battlefield with perfect clarity or sometimes even reach those corners at all. There will be those amongst you who will need to make calls without the assurance of STRATNET approval at your back. Calls that might lead to brilliant victory or catastrophic defeat. Calls that can save lives or condemn them. Hundreds, thousands, maybe even millions of lives will rest on you."
Both Instructors pause at that, glaring over the room slowly, making eye contact with every cadet individually. Next to you, Shuri meets their gaze flatly, her posture completely still. Sandra holds her head high, her chin jutting out defiantly. Koujirou shuffles in his chair and clenches his fists, looking troubled, but does not avert his gaze. Setsuna bites her lips but also manages to maintain eye contact. Many others do not.
The excruciating two dozen seconds of silence finally ends as both Instructors finish their sweep, relaxing minutely as Leonhart resumes talking.
"We recognise that not all of you will be capable or willing to make such calls, but for those of you who are willing, starting second year there will be an Officer stream. We will go into further details later in today's lesson, but first, in regards to this year, there is a mentoring program currently being offered. Flights may request a Third Year cadet to mentor them for a period of time. I urge you to take advantage of this program, as both the numbers of Instructors within the Academy are limited and so is our time. As the year progresses, you may find it difficult to find time to consult us when you need the help. Having a dedicated mentor who knows you and your Flight and who you can ask for help will aid you immensely then."
"A list of Third Year volunteers has been made available for your perusal. Treat this decision with the weight it deserves, as if you do choose to ask for a mentor, they will be every bit as impactful as the other members of your Flight. Make sure to get to know any of the volunteers before asking for their mentorship. There is, after all, no reason to be afraid of talking with your seniors."
From there on, the lesson moves on to alternative paths for Valkyrie Cadets, as constructors and as officers.
You tune it out.
You have personally walked down both paths, and you have seen how they end.
XxXxXxXxXx
The clock strikes twelve.
"Anna, we're off to the simulators again after lunch, you coming?"
Your stride pauses. That's right, the Flight planned to practice together every single lunch and evening until the Vanguard tournament. You had already skipped out on last night, but…
There's a faint sense of agitation in the depths of your stomach. Hearing about what Valkyries could do other than fight… what could you do?
You had built much and watched it all torn down.
You had led people and watched them rip themselves apart.
You had killed a Type Zero and destroyed a Breach.
-Humanity will greatly benefit-
That is the one thing you are needed for. Then, the power that you tapped into that made it all possible, the Wave Force, shouldn't you spend all your time strengthening it? You had felt the theoretical lattice of more refined forms of Wave Force Manipulation take shape in your mind when you had read the UN data on their Ginnungagap program. The center of that project, in which lay that enormous equation for their method of tapping into and shaping the Wave Force, caused something to click in your mind. You could make Wave Force more powerful, you're certain. If your time spent with your Flightmates suffered for a while, then so be it.
"Sorry I- There is something I want to do today," you reply.
"Well, uh, then- see you in afternoon class then?"
You think the question over. It was yesterday afternoon that you were told that if you wished to physically practice your Wave Force Manipulation, it would be best to do so outside of the Arcology. There is only so much theoretical work that could be done without physical confirmation of the models used, and Wave Force was clearly beyond the simulation limits of the large scale simulators.
"Maybe," you respond, still undecided.
You leave before any more questions are asked.
XxXxXxXxXx
It's only after you exit the Arcology, your boots crunching on the red dust, that it occurs to you that it would probably be a good idea to tell the Arcology and by extension your Instructors about your plans. It is probable that they already know from your departure, but none the less…
You inform the Arcology of your plans and quickly receive a response. A flight path is cleared for you, a high altitude arc that brushes against the Mesosphere before descending again, and a schedule for the Ordinance Testing Ground is passed onto you. Apparently, the UN have no further plans for that patch of land for the foreseeable future, so as far as they are concerned, it's for your exclusive use. Several options appear for the construction of targets, from large complexes to individual units, but you decline them all. You are only here to test the preparatory stages of your Wave Force, and nothing the UN can construct short of an Arcology or a Valkyrie Battleship could serve as an appropriate target for a coherent Wave anyway.
It is 400 kilometers from Perth to the Ordinance Testing Ground, around three to four minutes of flight at cruising speed, but… you never did properly test out your straight line flight speed, even though you now have a fusion reactor.
You first check and then double check that the airspace surrounding your route is clear. Groups of Valkyries fly along the outer perimeters of Perth on return routes, mostly Third year cadets from their signals, transport jets take off and land at the various airfields nearby and patrolling combat fighters are circling the Arcology, but nothing is in close enough proximity to be damaged by the likely side effects of your experiment. You take off, straining your thrusters, and accelerate to your conventional top speed of twenty kilometres per second in a little under nineteen seconds. The air around you explodes into plasma upon contact with your Impeller, first orange, then yellow, brightening further up to blue-white on your bow shock as you continue accelerating. Having left both the Troposphere and friendly units behind, you decide to see exactly how far you can push it.
You open the reactor taps on your backpack unit to full and eject multi-million degree hydrogen and helium, still in the process of fusion. Freed from the tremendous pressure of the fusion reactor, the fuel literally detonates as it rushes out behind you and your acceleration jumps up well past anything you have experienced before. It only takes you a little less than half a minute in total to cross the four hundred or so kilometers from central Perth Arcology to Ordinance Testing Group Five Zero Seven. You spread your Impeller wide, reverse your thrusters, adjust your inertia and haul yourself out of your descent to a dead stop in the space of a little over a kilometer. Another fireball expands around you from the violence of your deceleration, blindingly bright even to you as your wake of nuclear fuel overtakes you and washes over your Impeller.
Flying clear from the conflagration, you ascend and survey your trail. A wide wake of vapour marks your route, blooming dramatically into a horizontally continuous fireball where you had opened your reactor taps, drawing an orange flaming arch through the blue sky. Below you, your arrival has sparked yet another fireball and burning dust rises from the ground as the shockwave from the explosion rebounds off the ground, sending rocks bouncing and setting alight the few scraggly bushes close to the hypocenter.
Ha.
Ahahaha. Wow!
The fusion reactor was amazing, flying such distances at such speed used to be all theory work for you before, especially if you wanted to fight within the same time period. You'd forgotten how much you enjoy flying. It used to be hard for you to even reach half of your maximum conventional speed on a reasonable energy budget, although…
The strain on your Impeller is actually worse than what would have occurred if you had just chosen to shift all the way here. The effort of shunting through so much air, protecting yourself from your fusion fuel and then decelerating from such speeds ended up savagely depleting your Impeller. The reactor tap had also, as expected, drained your energy production. You spread your solar dynamos and wait for your reactor power levels to rise back into the positives.
Before that happens though, another complication reveals itself in the form of an irate Automatic Flight Controller, who pointedly reminds you of the local speed limit of Mach Ten. In the distance, air patrols shift. Apparently the continuous explosion your speedrun had left behind it ended up blinding many of the local ground-based sensor arrays.
Whoops… well… to be fair, your flight plan didn't list a local speed limit. Maybe… did they mean the liftoff and landing times to be absolute rather than suggestions?
A comm channel opens up, the familiar sharp and business like voice of the Academy Director ringing through, "Lieutenant Sanchez, this is Director De Vries. I understand that you intend to experiment with your Wave Force today, correct?"
Feeling sheepish after your gaff about the speed, you hesitantly reply, "Yes. Preparatory stage only, I won't be going as far as forming a coherent wave."
"Excellent," breathes the Director quietly, apparently unconcerned with your recent speeding ticket, "Can I ask you to delay for a few minutes? We have sufficient sensor coverage in range to observe, but some of the Valkyrie Instructors have expressed interest in watching in person."
You consider the request for a moment, glancing around for the sensors that the Director mentioned. The entire preparatory stage is safe for observation. No collateral effects, and you would be able to stop the process without difficulty. As for the sensors, they are easy to spot, arranged in a series of circles around the ordnance testing ground at various distances, completely uncamouflaged unlike the more permanent installations around. It had been just as well that your flightpath here has a high altitude arc, otherwise you might have scorched some of the sensors.
"Yes. I will wait."
"ETA three minutes. Stay safe. De Vries out."
As the Director signs out, you see half a dozen or so Valkyries emerge over the horizon in level flight, approaching at a rather more sedate pace compared to your dash. You watch on in interest as their IFF signals are decoded.
Leonhart isn't there, but you recognise Meyer's frame. Instructors Sadar and Vivas are also present, but the other three, Washington, Ng and Paulo from their IFFs, you haven't previously met.
They send a friendly ping as they pull up a kilometer away, and Meyer also waves casually. You send out a greeting ping of your own, then broadcast on an open channel, "Ready?"
"When you are." "Anytime." "Go ahead." "Aye aye." Vivas and Washington choose to simply use affirmative pings in place of their voice.
You raise your arm, and compress your Impeller. You tear more and more energy from the static of the universe as you pick at the agitated blips of ephemeral potential. Feeding what you collect back into the cycle, you harvest them again as they grow larger, the blips forced into a smaller and smaller volume. Again, again, and again for forty iterations.
Now, this is stage zero, step one.
