My logic:

Diplomacy... For reasons much discussed in the thread, we need to be pushing on the Honiani before the Harmony can successfully recalibrate their diplomatic strategy. The Muuyozoi are also being courted by the Harmony, and we need to keep more members of the Hishmeri Septs from falling in the Eternal Empress's orbit. I threw the Gorn in as a kind of "why not". They're a fan favorite, and it wouldn't hurt to have friends who are flanking the Klingons.

I'm sold on the Honiani and the Muuyozoi as reinforcing the diplomatic buffer against the HOH.

I think pushing the Hishmeri to try and stop the Eternal Empress from getting her hooks in is going to run into the same issues as the Yrillians, that the Hishmeri as a polity are too fragmented to have the centralised power structure to stop fragments from getting involved with her.

The Gorn are a waste (my opinion) of a push. I believe that pushing the Licori to counter the rising Romulan influence and protect routes to the Ked Paddah, or even pushing the Ked Paddah to pre-empt HOH movement in that area are better uses of a diplomatic push.

On current matters.

He's the current Surgeon-General, passing him over for this position would be an expression of a lack of confidence in his abilities, I can't see Sulu doing that to McCoy. He also 92 so likely to retire relatively quickly.

Dunno about the Hishmeri, but I think the Gorn diplomacy is because we are actively engaging them now in the last set of logs, looking for help against the Empress. It's a more immediate need than the Licori, since Romulan diplomacy is probably still fairly low level stuff what with the war.

That's a better reason than "fan favourite".

Personally I don't think the impact of a diplomatic push would have any benefit to our interactions with the Gorn for event rolls. With our low(ish) current relationship and relative distance both spatial and philosophical I don't expect there to be any significant change in the Gorn-Federation relationship. Even if we ended up with 100+ relationship I doubt anything would really change.

I can't believe so many people are voting against McCoy. Have the other two even appeared before, at all? The exact reason McCoy's mechanical benefit is so small is exactly because of just how massive his narrative weight he has. TOS can be said to have three main protagonists: Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. Kirk is "dead", Spock is busy doing research/diplomacy, and McCoy has only briefly appeared a few times in the story. This is the chance to give one of the greats of Star Trek some good time in this quest's spotlight. And look at how that's worked in the past: People loved having Uhura in the action, and even before Sulu became Admiral he had big and fun narrative impact as well. Having Sulu essentially fire McCoy by passing him over for someone else, (when he damn well knows McCoy is the best doctor in Starfleet,) would be such an ignoble and insulting end. And for what? After a few years, a small handful of ships gaining veterancy one event sooner than they would otherwise? Let me clarify one thing:

That's 44 years, or 660 Starfleet officers saved (minimum) just through passive mechanical benefit. Now, as I've done the calculations for my side of the argument, and the opposing side has neglected to do theirs, by default my argument is currently the correct one. /joke

I'm not opposed to McCoy, but I'd love to see an argument beyond "he's from canon". Frankly, he could save more than 15 Starfleet members a year as a ship's doctor or even a hospital doctor.
