Somebody on Cardassia's far side, you say?

Because I hear the Ferengi East Rimward Company is willing to do pretty much anything if there's potential profit in it.
I don't think the Ferengi are close enough. Also, aren't they coreward of us? As for a species that could potentially border the Cardassians on that side, maybe the Breen? Pretty sure they were immune to mindreading in canon, so the Konen's main strength would be useless against them.

Alrighty! Now that I'm not buried in starship rosters...

Does everyone remember when Comey decided to drop that email bombshell days out from the election and almost all of us were a bit miffed? The obstacle here is that right now you're in Comey's shoes, but with a much more legitimate reasoning. Right now, the Council wants Starfleet to hold the fort while half of the entire chamber goes up for a vote - this is a crucial time in the democratic process of the Federation, and system shocks like the realisation that a full-blown offensive is being launched is going to land on the news desk like a dead skunk in the Council's punch bowl.

On the other hand, part of your (Sulu's) role as a flag officer of Starfleet is providing political cover for officers beneath them. To paraphrase Homer, it is entirely seemly for the old Admiral's career to lie mangled by the political controversy. Providing Nash with the authorisation and agreeing to take on the political consequences, well, that's just part and parcel of being an old Admiral. Not like your legacy is going to suffer for it. If you think that an offensive is needed, and you don't mind driving the political establishment of the Federation up the wall, then make the call.

Just know that from the point of view of someone buried neck-deep in the lead up to the High Holy Day of the Federation Democracy, the President is going to look at you like a Comey dropping that last October Surprise.

Look, it's questing as Commander, Starfleet, not Ensign Ricky who just has to worry about not standing too close to the Captain on Away Misions ... but not too far away either. I reserve the right to throw a few lesser-of-evil challenges into the mix!

[X][NASH] Authorise an offensive and write-in reinforcements (40% chance President summarily fires you for authorising a major attack on the eve of the elections, 40% lesser consequences, 20% no care)
-[X] Send Salnas and Reason from CBZ, Gale and Zephyr from SBZ, Yukikaze from Apinae

Back to this.

I'm not opposed to authorizing an offensive if it's the most correct course of action, but I'm not satisfied it is.

It feels a little too much like jumping the gun, given how little information we have on what happened. It could be that the Konen are baiting us to attack, or it could be a bit of reverse psychology on their part, hoping we turtle up so they can claim some space themselves. I want more information, so holding off the attack to get more reinforcements and give our intelligence apparatus a chance to get us some info seems the best course of action for me:

[X][NASH] Instruct Nash to hold tight and prepare for an offensive starting at the end of Q2 (Reinforcements from anywhere many be provided, allows both sides an extra turn to prepare)
-[X] Reinforce as follows: Lightning (Centaur-A) from Sol Sector, Husacar (Constitution-B) from Andor Sector, Endurance (Excelsior-A) and Bull (Blooded Centaur-A) from Ferasa Sector, Avandar (Excelsior) from Rigel Sector, Yukikaze (Blooded Centaur-A) from Apinae Sector, Inspire (Oberth) and Calypso (Miranda-A) from RBZ, Thirishar (Blooded Excelsior) and Dynamo (Miranda-A) from KBZ, Spirit (Excelsior-A) and Reason (Renaissance) from CBZ, Zephyr (Blooded Centaur-A) and Gale (Blooded Centaur-A) from SBZ, and Svai (Miranda-A) from LBZ = Total Reinforcements of 2 Excelsior-A, 2 Excelsior (1 Blooded), 1 Constitution-B, 1 Renaissance, 5 Centaur-A (4 Blooded), 3 Miranda-A, and 1 Oberth

Can we call up the president and the Cabinet, explain the situation and recommend retaliation? Give her the choice of owning it or overruling Starfleet Command for political reasons. Couldn't happen to a nicer lady.

I actually prefer this option. No point going on an offensive when they choose it and if we do so, we ought to make it count.

Don't remember if I changed my vote. Just in case.

If Sulu gets fired so be it, we put nash in place because we felt she would be bold when needed, if we aren't going to actually make use of that what is the point.

There's a major difference here. Comey was acting on information that was months old and he could've released it at any time before or after he chose to. His goal was political; he specifically acted to influence the election and that was his sole purpose. We're acting in response to one of our ships getting blown up. You know what would torpedo this upcoming election even harder? Us saying "The Republic just got blown the fuck up, but we're going to wait until the election is over to respond the way we should because we don't want to rock the boat".

It turned out to be more complicated than that and involved Russian intel antics Morton's Forking him.

Something I've read in a fanfic A Month as Naruto Uzumaki:
A Hokage must never give into rage. But, should your anger be too much to contain, you must make sure that your anger is three things:
Your rage must be cold.
Your rage must be reasoned.
And your rage must be legendary.

Wait a bit, gather intel and reinforcements, and then smash them like the fist of God.

Yes, well I said it was a more legitimate reason :p

As I said in my own vote, I'd like to know where they took our POWs first so that we can aim our offensive properly.

I am powerful tempted by the immediate attack option, because the longer you give it the further away our POWs could be. But I think drawing in extra reinforcements makes the one quarter wait a marginally better call.

Some notes on new ships started:
Between Orions and Vulcans Starfleet has 3 Cargo Ships and a freighter starting construction. With those we have 10 cargo, 6 freighters and a super freighter under construction for Starfleet.
In addition to building strafleet ships the Orions are also building Rigel a Cargo ship so they are on their way to being a build yard for all civilian ship needs.

The Caitians have started construction on an Excelsior-A, interesting since they have an Excelsior that has not been refitted yet, they may want a replacement on hand before they do that. The Qloath also started one of their new explorers so 2 new explorers under construction. Riala and Tellar meanwhile are refitting an explorer each.

Apiata has decided not enough swarm ships and have promptly started 4 more, Caitians meanwhile are producing 2 more.

Across the Federation, Andor, Gaeni, Rigel and Seyek have started a cruiser each. At the same time 5 Constellations are going into refit, which are the last of the member Constellations so by years end only Starfleet will still have base Constellation. I expect Amarkia to start 2 Herbinda-A at some point since they like to support their Riala with a pair of cruisers.

Honiani are starting another 2 Monastery class escorts for 4 under construction with 4 active. What this means to me is a possible retirement of the 3 Parish Class escort they have once those 4 are done.

All told-
Escorts: Members 16 under construction, 2 under refit, Affiliates 10 under construction
Cruisers: Starfleet 7 under construction, 2 under refit, Affiliates 5 under construction and 5 under refit
Explorers: Starfleet 6 under construction and 2 under refit, Members 4 under construction and 2 under refit, Affiliates 2 under construction
