Hmmmmmm.

Hybor knows about Nash's reputation for aggression. He probably knows about the political situation in the Federation. This really feels like bait.

On the other hand, whatever ambush he has prepared might not be able to stand up to a sufficiently overwhelming force. If we counterattack hard enough, his plan could end up working too well.

I really don't know about this. I do know, however, that we need to either go on total attack or total defense. Any half-measures are going to fail.

I also am very much curious about how that Obsidian Order team got onto one of our cruisers. That's actually much more worrying than just losing a ship in battle would have been.

EDIT: also, this is the end of any benefit of the doubt that I would have ever been willing to give N'Gir. This woman is now not just an embarrassment to our democracy, but an actual menace to the entire Federation.

Note: I am assuming that as reinforcements move in, our Q2 ETC ships will arrive at their posts. That's 1 Excelsior, 1 Rennie, and 3 Centaur-A (2 of them blooded)... perfectly good reinforcements.

That leaves:
CBZ - Spirit and T'Mir covering
SBZ - Cheron and LOCF Berth 1 Rennie covering
Apinae - Valiant covering

I don't want to leave any sectors without ships, so Slightly In it is. Now how to write up that vote....

edit: Also the Cardassian fleet totals are stale by 2 years. They could have more or some refitted ships by now.

This notably excludes the Dylaarians, under the assumption that they're happily colonizing away unperturbed in the Dayan and Opal subsectors, and Nash would oblige by not disturbing them. Also assumes the Sydraxians aren't going to backstab us.

On the other hand, N'Gir's major complaint seems to be doing it in an election year, which means that if things go wrong, she doesn't get reelected. N'Gir really doesn't endear herself to Starfleet with her priorities.
That's probably because she would say no to the offensive until the election is over, which is kinda fair because Council priority could change by then.

20% chance even if we don't strip any ships.
That's for going over her head.

For me it comes down to this. If it weren't for the political stuff, and Nash came back with this response, would I back her?

I would. We didn't appoint her to this post to look scary and growl at the Cardassians. We appointed her because she'll take bold and daring actions. If she wants to hit back and hit back hard, then I've got to support her.

So that leaves the political stuff. What if Sulu gets fired? Well hell, whatever. Getting fired doing what he thinks is right and damn the consequences is probably how Sulu always thought he'd end his career. We can put the Augment in charge Patricia Chen, Kahurangi's legacy! Or maybe Uhura. Whatever. The point is, I ain't scared of Sulu getting fired.

EDIT: In fact, consider that the Cardassians are quite politically sophisticated and understand us well by now. They might have authorized the Konen to do this on the eve of an election precisely because it would make things difficult.

I think firing Sulu on the eve of the election would be just as damaging to N'Gir's re-election chances as anything.

No fear, we can always appoint Linderley.

"Commander, how do you plan on dealing with the Cardassians?"
"Sorry, but that's Class 1-AAA Secret Information."
"But I'm the President!"
"But are you? Are you really?"
"What are you doing?"
"Please hold still while my Chief of Staff takes a blood sample to run a few quick tests on."

This is almost definitely a trap....but it also sounds to me like one of those "Heads I win, Tails you loose" situation. If we don't act, I'm sure we're liable to see similar attacks all over the place...assuming this isn't a prelude to an actual invasion. Go in, but go in on our terms

[x] Briefvoice No longer actual

To paraphrase my friend, at the end of the day, fancy Lelouch Lamperouge bullshit doesn't stop phasers. Run them off the field.

Does nobody give a damn about Trump!Cat firing Sulu!? We know from previous experience that she'll do it.

TLDR? If we approve an attack, there's a 40% chance President Cat will fire Sulu on the spot. If we order Nash to dig in, there's a 15% chance she'll attack without orders.

Never let political expediency dictate what you do as commander of Starfleet. If we are asked to resign, then so be it. We will be able to do it with a clear conscience.

Briefvoice really put it best...even if this happened under a different president, I'd still endorse this course of action. This was never about making the easy choice.

I am really torn on this one, on one hand, this feels like a trap, on the other not answering to the provocation can send the wrong message.

But... ok, Republic got bushwhacked, either by booby traps or from within, the latter means we have a leak in our intel apparatus and the Obsidian Order has exploited it. and they probably have POWs to interrogate and, given their nature, they will get some data, how much is difficult given we don't know their interrogation methods.
I rally, really want to go for the attack, but given the gap in our intel... no. I can't in good conscience go for it, since it is both something the Caddies will expect and, given they had access to our ships... they probably have some humint assets within our Gabriel logistical tail.
We NEED to find that first, we need to know how badly compromised we are or we risk our forces finding nothing, while the cardies do a general assault or a large scale raid on our Gabriel assets while our fleet is pointing their assets... and given the nature of the Federation, even if we win, we'd loose the public opinion and that would lead to the resignation of the president (with potential instability within the Federation as an added bonus) and probably the resignation of not only us, but Nash and a few other of our best and brightest.

Quite frankly, we simply have too much to loose. once we have the tachyon net, the defenses and what not? AND we have a rough idea how the charges got into Republic? then we hammer the spoon heads till they become the Spork heads.

But not before.

So...

The higher ranks of Starfleet are there to defend their captains from political nonsense so they can do their jobs. If Sulu won't do so for Nash, He's not the Commander I think he is.

Besides which, if this was deliberate they'll just repeat the tactic and then we'll be facing this choice again the next time elections roll around.

That's probably because she would say no to the offensive until the election is over, which is kinda fair because Council priority could change by then.

Except that for N'Gir's entire presidency her interactions with Starfleet has been about imposing the interests of internal political factions on Starfleet. Not the Federation's values as filtered through the lens of the political party in charge, the way it has been with previous presidents. As far as Starfleet can determine, the question has never been 'will this be good for the Federation' over 'does this make me more likely to get reelected.'

And that is a problem. It divides the political scene, encourages partisanship and polarizes the public. We may not always like Stesk, to highlight one of our most outspoken critics, but Stesk's criticism comes from wanting Starfleet to be the best Starfleet can be, and an example all of the Federation can point towards and say 'that? That is who we are and what we do.'

Besides, you forget a major thing; if Starfleet does nothing to upset the political scene now, she's more likely to get reelected. So the Council's priority is not likely to change.

N'Gir is full of hot air plus shit. we all know this. If we do nothing the Cardassians win. If we attack we can at least discourage the Konan's tactics by wiping out the infrastructure of an entire sector with the reinforcements we are bringing in. And by Wiping out I mean completely eradicating every Cardassian ship, outpost, and what ever else is in that sector. And hopefully we will both destroy some Konan ships to teach them a lesson and find out where they have taken our people so that we can attempt a rescue if it is at all possible. Getting back to N'Gir There comes a point where we have to say fuck it and ignore her in favor of protecting federation interests over politics. And that time is now. The GBZ is a free for all for a reason and now its time to throw down the gauntlet and teach the Cardassians and Konan a lesson. If Sulu is forced to resign than fine. He would probably leave with his head held high for doing the right thing even if it was politically inconvenient to N'Gir. And then lambast her on the news for putting politics before the federation which will of course tank her career since that is pretty much what she just did by firing Sulu. Personally I am sick and tired of her and I want her out of office.
