Personally I'm not a big fan of "Selflessly make the world better" votes for spending boons. In my view those are things that should be spent primarily or at least significantly for Mathilde's benefit. As that helps reverse against the generic voter inclination pull of transforming Mathilde into a positive utility robot (Thankfully Boney is able to mitigate a lot of this as well, but I do feel its an issue). The canal at least there's the EIC that could maybe get in on the ground floor and benefit so I don't dislike it that much. I'm definitely against the idea of pumping a bunch of other boons in though. It's a blood price from Kislev, Kislev can foot the bill.

That is a good point: do we even need to spend a boon here? We dont even need to convince a runesmith here. We are not even asking the dwarves to build the channel for Kislev. We just ask for some expertise to make the project easier
I dunno why are people even talking about needing dwarves, its not as if human engineers aren´t perfectly capable of making the locks themselves.

Looking at some maps of Kislev, it looks like both the upper and lower branches of the River Lynsk originate very close to the entrance to High Pass. A canal might be plausible there, and if we put it under the Redbeards leadership (so the Vlag dwarves don't have to go outside), then a port and market on the western end of High Pass seems very possible, and could easily grow to rival Uzkulak as a Silk Road trade centre.
Might want to add "and also canal between Vlag and Lynsk" if that's the case.
@Boney would vlag be amenable to a project like this? If so would this overstrain kislev to do another canal project at the same time?

The Dukhlys Forest is one of those parts of Kislev that does not answer to Kislevites. Building and maintaining a stronghold in the depths of it might not be impossible, but it's not the sort of thing you just throw in as an afterthought.

We might be able to just ask for that.
This is scope creep, but what if we spend the boon to get the city's harbour facilities improved [at the cutting edge of Empire/Kislev tech, whichever is better, but to dwarven standards], in return for those ship basing rights for the Empire that some people suggested upthread?

I dunno about the geography, but that might help get the Empire to fund/assist with the canal building, causing the project to be a lesser drain on Kislev's resources.

I'm not thinking about long term basing rights, that's for future generations, I'm just thinking it might be nice to have Empire ships closer to the north for when the Default Drunkard's banner is raised.

And better ship facilities for Kislev.

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting that the forests are evil and eat people in the Warhammer world.
yah okay def gonna shelve that idea for now since asking them to do both would prob lead to both being worst off and way to much of a commitment so "southern" canal it is

Have we come to anything near a consensus on what to do re: Elf boon? I was leaning marienburg prior to canal.

I think collaboration is the best option, as we directly get Ulthuan's help with the waystones. Payday might be useful for Kislev, who could extract a price or promise from the high elves that will strengthen them, and the dwarves and the Eonir might get something neat out of it too. We could also try to negotiate for the waystone passwords as the Empire's price, but that's not guaranteed like collaboration would be, and it would be all we get from them. Marienburg isn't really necessary now that we have the canal idea, but we could double down on screwing them if we really wanted to.

So basically just pick what you want, they are all good options.

I'm very much in favor of canals for the blood price, but I have to admit it's a very unexpected and funny option.

Just imagine: Boris paces in his new chambers, waiting. He knows he did what he had to do for the future of Kislev, but that doesn't stop the guilt. Now, his father's killer, the woman to whom he owes everything, arrives. He wonders for what she will ask: Wealth? An army at her call? Secrets? Support for the Empire in the great game of nations? Books?

Mathilde leans in close, and whispers two words:

"A canal."

Just to let those who haven't been engaged know, current plans are more up yours Marienberg canal spam, gimmie da spire and getting elf bat man to smack Spahery until they give up way stone secrets?

...You know, it occurs to me that giving Kislev's trade a shot in the arm would also be an indirect way of honoring Haletha in her Kalita guise.
