@Sayle
Hey, sorry to keep bothering you.
To be clear, this is absolutely not a complaint, but a question so I can take it into account for future builds.
What led to us not having the option for extending range? Was it simply not having discussions about it, or was it the size of the ship/lack of aux/spare space?

I've made assumptions that you filter out options that don't seem to have interest to prevent a vote having a dozen choices, or things that the engineers wouldn't waste time with, but I'm curious.

...can we totally spend a small amount of extra credits to increase our current antimatter tank by 30% or something? :p

Since it's a ship designed to be going from place to place and there was a large space to use there I figured it just wasn't especially relevant. Simply put, the workshop and cargo bay seemed a more pressing selection to make. There was initially an option for antimatter pods, but I'm allergic to multiple choices for one thing and not for the others, and they seemed the easiest to drop.

Cygnet is such a bizarre naming choice to me. Like, actual professionals will have to crew this thing, naming it over an in-joke that it looks kind of like a swan/duck seems odd. (Honestly the ship does not look especially swan-like to me to begin with.) Federation Starships are all about being capable, powerful, able to render aid in any emergency - they're the exact thematic opposite of "vulnerable baby animal".

I never actually took it as a joke name. Cygnus is the name of the genus, it has a swan-like neck, and there are plenty of other bird-themed names to pick for the others. Peregrine, Eagle, Hawk. Swans aren't joke animals in the same way that calling it 'duck' or 'mallard' would be, at least not to my mind. Same with the Skate and Stingray - both ships had distinct aquatic features that had resemblance to the animals they were named after.

the reduced range is a selling point if you think about it. The fact it can't be hauled off for an offensive war means many worlds will see them as a solid security investment and lobby for more to be built as an internal security and support fleet.

If it was the Cygnus or Cyngi class, then I'd agree, but Cygnet specifically means a baby or juvenile swan in common English usage today.

Personally I don't mind the general concept of naming the ship after a swan at all. Swans are fine birds, and given their long migrations, courage, and loyalty to mates who they choose for life, what could be better for our workhorse cruiser? It's the specific naming choice which does not work for me and changes the connotation. Kind of like how calling something the USS Foal comes off rather differently to the USS Mustang.

[X] 0: Federation Starship (FSS)

I prefer FSS because it's simple and accurate. I think "United" is extraneous, but I'm fine with any of these options.

[X] 1: Cygnet

I like bird-themed starship names.

...I am also now imagining some pirates getting absolutely steamrollered by the SS Duckling.

Switched up my Cygnet vote to Cygnus and added Stalwart.
I definitely agree we are doing a bit too many animal names.
Also, I want some really awesome names for some of these workhorses.

On another note I want as to establish a hull number system that isn't just a NCC number.
That way at a glance a unit commander can tell what a ships capabilities will roughly be and . Doesn't especially matter the system just that one exists.
NCC can still exist mind you but not used in combat

If people honestly think the young bird theming is too silly, then we can name the class of ships after waterfowl and seabirds, which seems to be closer to what @Sayle intended.

From the list by @KarmaA, that's at least Petrel, Osprey, Kingfisher, and Jacana, to which I'd add Heron, Ibis, and Cormorant. All of those sound like perfectly respectable ship names to me.

It also strikes me that Albatross is a good name for an explorer.

[X] 1: Other - Stalwart

I appreciate that the numbering for votes starts at zero.

Starfleet ships all having the USS designation just feels weird and kinda tacked on, when they specifically say stuff like, "this is the Federation starship So and So..."
USS (or whatever other designation we use - UFS is currently in the lead) only seems to refer to the integrated fleet - Vulcan for example operates independent ships into the post-Dominion War era, and while they could say "this is the Federation starship [name]" it wouldn't have the USS/UFS designation.

Separating the pennant numbers by class could do that. So a commander could see an 'NCC-8XX' and know it's a Cygnet, or 'NCC-9XX' and know it's the Explorer class we'll be making.

To build of off this post, the name 'Swan' should be reserved for a fully combat-focused ship design.
Swans are fuckin' scary.

Probably a bit too hard to scale up as the fleet grows and for that matter properly unifies and gets a lot more diversified but it's a good enough for now solution. Probably do need a equivalent to what the USN does though in due time. But that's a problem for future Starfleet when there's literally Triple to 5 digit numbers of ships running around

The name dosen't really bother me.

Turns out, most of their reputation on that front is an utter myth (getting pecked is still no fun, of course).
Huh. Would you mind linking to good source that [without going over 3 2k words] goes into: ''Swans going at people when they are incubating eggs and/or are raising chicks'' then?

Guys, we're space Canada. One part goofy friend to all living things, one part horrifying engine of destruction. A ship named after a baby bird fits right into the first half of that identity.
