I wonder if we can let Gabriel help with taking care of Morningsilver to see if he has any Squirey advice that would unlock something neato.
Why not buy the Morningsilver and one of the stallions, meaning we get some adorable baby foals in a few months, and eventually, free mounts for our friends?
(We could give Gabriel a horse when he eventually goes back home, for example, that'd be a nice parting gift.)
Throwing that kind of cash around also probably isn't a great idea when we're about to hit a famine.
Our family is also responsible for enslaving Gabriel and killing the knight he was squiring for. He might have forgiven us, but I wouldn't bet money on his family (or his fiancée) having done the same. Dealing with Wessex will likely be complicated. This is a solid possibility, though. We do have an in with Wessex, after all, and have always intended to take a trip there.

I'm not saying going on an expedition to Wessex is a bad idea, far from it. Dealing with those complications will doubtless be entertaining. It's just what I'm proposing is, in essence, a long distance grocery run. Let's not complicate things unnecessarily. Save the headaches for when we go for the holy coal.
Also, I would like to talk with Gabriel about the matter before we even consider going on a trip to Wessex. He probably should have a say on whether or not we return him after all. I'd also prefer to give him time to consider his options, so it's probably best we go elsewhere given the time constraints. I'm leaning towards Lotharingia. It's more fertile than Denmark, and closer than Wessex to boot.

Hmmm. I was under the impression we could only buy one, but buying two isn't impossible if it's permitted, though that's starting to get real expensive. I worry a little that the horses will consume Food during the Winter, but they probably just get lumped in with the other livestock in that regard, to be honest.
10 silver for 1 gold, iirc.Although it's hard for me to gauge exactly how expensive it is for us because I can't remember how much silver one ounce of gold is worth, can you recall off hand?
Assuming it's possible, yeah it is expensive, but it does mean we could potentially recoup several times our investment if we eventually start a horse business. (Probably crossbreeding with Hasvir's herd for genetic diversity.) Although it's hard for me to gauge exactly how expensive it is for us because I can't remember how much silver one ounce of gold is worth, can you recall off hand?
8 oz of silver to 1 oz. gold. So we have just shy of the equivalent of 1800 silver (1798, to be specific). And we make a profit of about 80 or so a year, after taxes but including the value of the Goods we get.
This turn we're spending just over 100 of that on bling, plus whatever we do for horses. If we bought two we'd be effectively spending 1/5 of our current money, and almost 5 years of income...on the other hand, even one plus the bling is well over 10% of our money and almost three years of income.
I think if we see it as an investment, we can expect to see a profit from horse trading in the long run, and also giving someone a fine horse as a gift is an incredible way to make friends and influence people. It's not like we're hugely wanting for ways to make money if we need to; we've got the trading mission coming up. Let's build that generational wealth!
TBH, I don't want another mouth to feed when we're heading into a famine. One horse is already enough.
Eh, sure. I'll support Morningsilver and Sundancer.I think if we see it as an investment, we can expect to see a profit from horse trading in the long run, and also giving someone a fine horse as a gift is an incredible way to make friends and influence people. [X] Plan: Bonnie and Clydesdale
-[X] Yes, you will buy some bling
--[X] But all three (30 oz. bling, costs 8 oz. silver)
-[X] Yes, you will buy a horse. You will buy TWO HORSES
--[X] Morningsilver
--[X] Swiftarrow
-[X] Talk to Audrikr and play a game of tafl while you're at it
Horse and Sword. Ship and Sail. These are the traditional rewards for quests, the prices paid to hire a Hero.
I'm not entirely against this, depending, though I will note that I did edit in a concern after you quoted my post: We can afford to buy one horse with our silver alone. If we're buying two we're paying in gold, which might draw some attention we don't want. That's not necessarily a reason not to do it, but should be kept in mind.
Eh, sure. I'll support Morningsilver and Sundancer.
And its not just "an incredible way to make friends and influence people".
It is one half of "horse and sword" (the other half we can make via smithing).
Its currently 8 for only Morningsilver, 1 for only Sundancer, 1 (me) for Morningsilver and Sundancer, and you.I can swap for Sundancer if there's a lot more support for that.
Frisian was mutually intelligible to English during this time period, so you do sort of speak the language. If you were to deal with any of the higher nobility, then you'll probably have to learn some French
I'm thinking that, as they're not livestock and have a role to play in proper society—though you certainly could eat them if so desired—a horse will need 1 Food a turn. You can buy two of them if so desired.@Imperial Fister how do the horses interact with Food? And can we buy two of them if we want?
